2 There is no better time to retreat as a family NICK SHARPLES nicksharples.com Dear Princetonian, Since the first overwhelmingly successful safari was offered by Princeton Journeys in 2005, scores of Princetonians have ventured together to Africa for an introduction to the timeless beauty and drama of the continent s natural landscapes. Gather once again over the winter holiday period December 19 29, 2018 and learn with your loved ones in three classic Tanzanian wildlife areas. The adventure begins with a short, scenic flight to a private nature refuge and model for community-based tourism located just east of Serengeti National Park. This will make for the perfect launching point, offering not only your first taste of wildlife viewing by Land Rover and on foot, but also several opportunities to interact with members of the local Maasai community. The highlight of any Tanzanian safari is the 6,000-square mile Serengeti National Park and you ll spend three days immersed in its spectacular wilderness. Best known for its big predators including cheetah, leopard, large prides of lion and clans of hyena the Serengeti is also home to thousands of birds and millions of other animals. Accommodations will be in private nyumbas, (Swahili for home ) tented camps that feature soft linens on the beds, en-suite bathrooms with pump-flush toilets and gravity-fed hot showers, and other surprising amenities. Next move southeast to the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera formed millions of years ago. Ngorongoro houses a self-contained ecosystem that is home to the highest concentration of wildlife on the planet and will give you yet another extraordinary game-viewing opportunity. Having lived in a tent on the floor of the crater for two years after leaving Princeton, Mace Hack 86 S86 P16 P20 will have many stories to share as Princeton Study Leader for this journey. From the unexpected comfort of the walk-in tents to the exhilarating proximity to African wildlife, this is not your average camping trip! Experience the magic of a different world, far from the crowds and away from the distractions of our busy modern lives and create unforgettable memories in Tanzania s breathtaking wilderness. Space is limited so we encourage you to reserve your place today by contacting the Princeton Journeys team at (609) or journeys@princeton.edu. With kind regards, Margaret M. Miller 80 Deputy Vice President for Alumni Affairs Bridget St. Clair Executive Manager, Princeton Journeys Your STUDY LEADER Having lived in a tent on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater for two years after leaving Princeton, Mace Hack 86 S86 P16 P20 will have many stories to tell as Princeton Study Leader for this Journey. Currently, he serves as Nebraska State Director at The Nature Conservancy, ensuring the state s rich natural heritage remains healthy for future generations. However he has worked on wildlife conservation projects elsewhere in the U.S. and internationally, including extensive work on grasslands in East Africa. Dr. Hack, who holds a doctorate in ecology, evolutionary biology and animal behavior from the University of California, San Diego, and an undergraduate degree in those fields from Princeton, is also an adjunct associate professor in the University of Nebraska Lincoln s School of Natural Resources. 5 ANDY BIGGS WHY TANZANIA? Visiting Tanzania will feel like stepping into your wildest dream. You ll stalk with lions, roam with elephants, strut with flamingos, feel dwarfed by a 2,000-foot-deep crater, and sleep under the stars. You ll discover unbridled beauty at World Heritage Sites, practice tracking skills in remote wild lands, and experience peacefulness and connection to the Earth like never before. You ll feel safe and comfortable every step of your journey. Tanzania is one of the most peaceful and stable countries on the African continent, predominantly free from the political upheaval that has plagued so many other African countries; it s often referred to as Africa s Switzerland. With a rich cultural tapestry comprising more than 120 distinct ethnic groups, Tanzania learned long ago that there is greater strength in tolerance and unity than in divisiveness. Having set aside one-third of its land for the purpose of conservation, it is no wonder Tanzania boasts the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world. Protected since 1921, the Serengeti is almost as large as the US state of Connecticut, and features landscapes ranging from grassland plains and savanna to riverine forests and woodlands as well as the largest migration of mammals on earth, including 1.5 million wildebeest. But the Serengeti is only one of Tanzania s wonders. Snow-crowned Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa s highest peak, looms over the northern border. The Ngorongoro Crater, an intact volcanic caldera formed millions of years ago, houses a self-contained ecosystem that is home to the highest concentration of wildlife on the planet. You can also visit Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakeys unearthed archeological discoveries that changed our understanding of human evolution. Warmth, generosity, and wonder are truly the heart and soul of this remarkable corner of the world. WHAT TO EXPECT There is virtually no bad time to visit Tanzania. Rains in November and April motivate the perpetual movement of animals in search of water (also known as The Great Migration). The climate is typically dry, sunny, and warm. In northern Tanzania, expect temperatures with daytime highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s in the evenings and early mornings. Temperatures will be cooler at higher elevations. ACTIVITY LEVEL This program involves exposure to the outdoors, full days of touring, and some walking, often along uneven terrain. This is not an overly active safari, but you should be in good physical condition in order to enjoy it to the fullest. Early mornings offer the best opportunities for wildlife viewing, and drives may last up to five hours. Roads can be bumpy, dusty, and occasionally muddy. Since your comfort is a priority, these drives are minimized with wildlife viewing and/or cultural stops along the way. SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL Recently named to Travel + Leisure s 2017 World s Best List in the category of Top Safari Outfitters, Thomson Safaris was selected as the tour operator for this program because of their extensive expertise in northern Tanzania and award-winning reputation in the adventure travel business. Working exclusively in Tanzania for more than 36 years, they are leaders in ethical, sustainable, and responsible tourism. Below are some of the many ways Thomson Safaris continues to give back. The Tanzania operations which are also owned by Rick Thomson and Judi Wineland, providing a seamless experience for travelers hire locally and provide excellent benefits, job security, and training. Environmental conscientiousness is a priority: mobile camps utilize solar lighting and water-conserving technologies, Thomson s U.S. headquarters has 110 solar panels, providing 1/3 of its power, and the Tanzania office maintains an organic garden. To minimize the impact on Tanzanian landscapes and wildlife, Thomson Safaris insists on adherence to Leave No Trace ethics at all its camps and on its Mt. Kilimanjaro treks. Owners Rick Thomson and Judi Wineland have helped to set up sustainable local businesses, support local schools and women s empowerment initiatives, and fund a 12,000-acre conservation project east of the Serengeti through their many partner philanthropy organizations. Thomson Safaris also works with the organization Green Living Project in an effort to educate individuals and communities on diverse sustainable practices around the world. In 1996, a group of Thomson guests were touched by Tanzania s limited educational resources and, along with Thomson owner, Judi Wineland, founded the nonprofit organization Focus on Tanzanian Communities (FoTZC). The heart of its mission is to partner with Tanzanian communities on sustainable development projects. In addition to funding, building, and donating much-needed supplies to local schools, FoTZC provides funding for healthcare, clean water and women s empowerment initiatives.

6 ANDY BIGGS EXPERIENCED GUIDES Thomson Safaris was one of the first safari operators in Tanzania to insist on local, Tanzanian guides. All your guides have a minimum of 10 years experience in the field. More than just leaders, spotters, and wildlife experts, they are true ambassadors for Tanzania. In addition to superior wildlife spotting skills, your team of guides offers local insight that can t be found in guidebooks. They can t wait to share their country s treasures with you! TRANSPORTATION WHILE ON SAFARI You ve gone halfway around the world to be on safari; you don t want to waste a single minute stuck in the mud or unable to cross the river. Luckily, you ll be traveling in specially customized vehicles. These reliable, rugged vehicles are tough enough for river crossings, wild terrain, dirt roads, and anything that comes your way! Benefits of your Customized Safari Vehicle: While the vehicle is built to accommodate 8 passengers, an average of 5-6 guests per vehicle means room to move and guaranteed window seats for everyone Better views because the seats have been lowered Protection from the sun due to the pop-up roof The ability to stand up and get 360 views when the roof is popped up Easy battery recharging via multiple US-style outlets in each vehicle Worry-free river crossings with a custom snorkel that keeps the engine going Complimentary snacks and bottled water are provided throughout the safari No mileage restrictions you ll go wherever the wildlife is ACCOMMODATIONS Accommodations have been chosen for their unique African feel, stunning settings, and ideal proximity to attractions. All lodges are comfortable and have electricity and private bathrooms. Your camps, which were custom-designed by Thomson, are called Nyumbas (Swahili for home ). They are eco-friendly mobile camps set on private sites which allow direct access to wildlife. The large walk-in tents come with real beds dressed in deluxe linens. En suite bathrooms include water basins, showers, and self-contained, pump-flush toilets. Due to ecological and conservation issues, none of the camps have fixed plumbing, and they utilize the abundant sunshine to provide solar-powered LED lighting. The camp chef prepares fresh gourmet meals from local ingredients, and restricted diets are easily accommodated with advance notice. Accommodations for your program include: Rivertrees Country Inn (1 night) Nestled in the foothills of Mount Meru, in view of Mount Kilimanjaro, this peaceful country estate combines simple elegance and modern convenience. Wake up in your farmhouse-style room to the sound of the rushing Usa River, and enjoy a hearty breakfast in an open-air, thatched-roof dining area. Eastern Serengeti Nyumba (2 nights) Set in a 12,000 acre private nature refuge held exclusively for Thomson Safaris guests, this beautiful camp is the perfect starting point for your adventure in the bush. Guests can enjoy a wide-range of activities from camp and enjoy meals and lectures in the central lounge and dining tents. After dinner, gather around the campfire to share stories or gaze at the star-filled night sky. Serengeti Nyumba (3 nights) This semi-permanent, seasonal camp is strategically located to maximize access to both resident and migratory wildlife. With spacious tents, cozy bedding, and en suite bathrooms, you ll have to take a look outside to remember that you re deep in the bush. Best of all, with eco-friendly features such as solar lighting, you re not harming the landscape. Ngorongoro Nyumba (2 nights) The Ngorongoro camp is set on the eastern edge of the Ngorongoro Crater s rim and offers the best possible access in and out of the crater. In the morning, you have the eastern floor of the crater almost completely to yourself. In the evening, head to the campfire before dinner, then enjoy a traditional Tanzanian meal a specialty of the camp chefs here. Rivertrees Country Inn (Day Use at the end of your safari) Rivertrees is one of the best places to end your safari.

7 ANDY BIGGS COMPLETE ITINERARY 12/19/18 Depart From North America 12/20/18 Arrival into Arusha A staff member will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your comfortable lodge. Rivertrees Country Inn (Snack) 12/21/18 Arusha to Eastern Serengeti Private Nature Refuge This morning, fly to a private nature refuge in the Eastern Serengeti ecosystem. As you journey to camp, your guides will give a brief history of the 12,000-acre refuge. Enjoy wildlife viewing along the way, one of the tangible results of conservation efforts in the area. Giraffe, eland, dik dik, ostrich, leopard, and even wild dog can be seen in this unique wildlife haven. This afternoon, stretch your legs on a brief but scenic walk (a luxury not available in the national parks). Celebrate your first evening in the bush with fellow travelers. Eastern Serengeti Nyumba (BLD) 12/22/18 Eastern Serengeti Private Nature Refuge Enjoy a light breakfast before heading out on a morning hike. Being out on the plains on foot at this time of day is magical with the sun creeping above the horizon bathing the plains in a soft morning light. Spend some time as a family at camp and later, enjoy a game-viewing drive. This afternoon, meet a Maasai elder who will share Maasai folktales. Those interested can take a special night drive. Because night drives are not permitted inside the national parks, few travelers in Tanzania have the chance to participate in such a unique experience. Eastern Serengeti Nyumba (BLD) 12/23/18 Eastern Serengeti to Serengeti National Park Before leaving the Eastern Serengeti, visit a school in a nearby Maasai village to learn about the role of education in Maasai culture and meet some of the students. Then have your first taste of the Serengeti, Tanzania s second-largest national park, which covers nearly 6,000 square miles of grassland plains, savannah, kopjes, hills, woodlands, and riverine forests. Journeying into the heart of the Serengeti, learn to spot wildlife from your skilled guides. This afternoon, settle into camp and learn to play the traditional game of Bao or practice Swahili with your guides. Southern Serengeti Nyumba (BLD) 12/24/18 Serengeti National Park Often misunderstood, the Great Migration is a continuous process in which nearly two million wildebeest and zebra roam the plains, following precious food and water. The migration s most spectacular moments occur when large numbers of wildebeest and zebra make river crossings, during which they must elude predators in a desperate fight for survival. There is no telling exactly when these dramatic movements will occur, but you will spend the entire day observing the ongoing cycle of life in this special place. Southern Serengeti Nyumba (BLD) 12/25/18 Serengeti National Park Those with advance reservations will have the opportunity to view the Serengeti from a truly unique vantage-point: floating high above in a hot-air balloon. For those who opt not to take the balloon excursion, there is much to discover within arm s reach of camp; learn how to identify animal footprints and bird calls with our guides. The remainder of the day will be spent seeking out wildlife and exploring the Serengeti s rich landscapes. Southern Serengeti Nyumba (BLD) 12/26/18 Serengeti to Olduvai Gorge and Ngorongoro Conservation Area Upon leaving the Serengeti, make a brief stop at one of the greatest prehistoric sites in Olduvai Gorge, where archeologists have been making thrilling fossil discoveries for nearly a century. Later, after cutting across the desert-like bush country, enter Ngorongoro. The Maasai are allowed to live in boma settlements throughout the conservation area and you may see them herding their cattle. Your exclusive camp is set on the rim of the Crater (7,200 feet) which makes for potentially chilly nights, so pull on your fleece jacket and join fellow Princetonians around the campfire. Ngorongoro Nyumba (BLD) 12/27/18 Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Ngorongoro Crater Rise early this morning to get to the crater floor as soon as the gate opens and spend a full day with more than 30,000 animals. So that you don t miss a minute in this truly magical place, enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic spot. At camp tonight, share stories of the day in the crater during a traditional Tanzanian dinner, rich with spices and fresh local vegetables. Ngorongoro Nyumba (BLD) 12/28/18 Ngorongoro Highlands to Arusha After breakfast, head back to Arusha, making a brief stop at the Cultural Heritage Center, which offers an abundance of wooden carvings, artifacts, apparel, and crafts for purchase. After lunch, transfer to a day room to freshen up before your evening flight home. Day Room at Rivertrees Country Inn (BL, Snack) 12/29/18 En route Arrive home (Meals aloft) OPTIONAL Hot Air Balloon Safari Take in sweeping views of the African plains from a hot air balloon during your stay in the Serengeti. Launch at sunrise and, depending on wind conditions, float over the Seronera River Valley for 30 minutes to an hour. Upon descending, celebrate with a champagne toast, and enjoy a full English breakfast right on the savannah. You may see wildlife, but the most incredible part of the experience is the unforgettable bird s eye perspective as you skim over the tops of acacia trees and observe the pristine landscape from above. $550 per person, advance reservations required; height and weight restrictions apply

8 ZANZIBAR POST-SAFARI EXTENSION December 28, 2018 January 1, 2019 Starting at $1890/adult or teen, $1590/child 11 and under. Rooms accommodate up to 3 guests. Zanzibar. The name alone inspires romantic visions of mythical seafaring tales and indigo ocean vistas. Once a hub for the vast Indian Ocean trading network, Zanzibar became a home for Africans, Arabs, Persians, and Indians alike, and has long attracted visitors from around the world. Zanzibaris have strong identities that are distinct from their compatriots on the mainland Tanzania. It is also a resilient culture, having broken away from slavery s shackles and risen above the rule of many different empires and kingdoms. Spend the days taking in the local Swahili culture and enjoying the beach whether swimming, snorkeling, diving, or simply relaxing. The reefs and coral offer an immense diversity of vibrant aquatic life: butterfly fish, emperor angel fish, dolphin, lion fish, green turtles, and manta ray. December 28 Ngorongoro Highlands to Zanzibar Fly from the Manyara airstrip (skipping the last day in Arusha) arriving in Stone Town, Zanzibar later this afternoon. Transfer to your family-friendly beach resort and enjoy dinner with ocean views. Breezes Beach Club (B, Boxed Lunch, D) December Zanzibar Relax by the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean. If inactivity is the order of the day, there are few better places on earth to relax as the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. Breezes Beach Club (BD) December 31 Stone Town to Dar es Salaam Transfer back to Stone Town for a guided walking tour where you will learn about the island s tainted history as a slave and ivory trading capital. Enjoy lunch on your own and shopping in the market before catching an afternoon flight back to Dar es Salaam. Freshen up at a day room near the airport and fly home tonight. Day Room at the Harbor View Suites (B) The timing of this program is considered high season in Tanzania and Zanzibar and lodges can fill up quickly.
