3 Day 1: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Thu, 6 July) For a different type of wildlife experience, many tourists head west to the least populated part of South Africa, where the famous Kalahari Desert or, as it is now known, the Kgalagadi, starts. One of the jewels of the desert, it is a beautiful wilderness of grasslands and red sand dunes protected by the cross border reserve between South Africa and Botswana. The South African part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park used to be known as the Kalahari Gemsbok Park. The park is renowned for its predator and raptor viewing, and not surprisingly, its gemsbok or oryx; the elegant grey, black and white antelope with their rapier-like horns. Overnight: Camp If it's impressive settings that make or break the atmosphere of a rest camp, there's no question as to what Nossob is made of. Slashed across the dry riverbed of the Nossob, in the middle of one of the area's impressive tree savannah, Nossob Rest Camp is made well known for its predator sightings. 4 Day 2: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Fri, 7 July) Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park See Above Overnight: Camp The stark, beautiful Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offers three camps, one of which is Kalahari Trail Camp. Surrounded by Kalahari dune bushveld, the camp has a reception, shop and fuel facilities. Also at the camp is a hide overlooking a water hole, attracting various animals of the Kgalagadi. Expect to see many a giraffe here. 5 KALAHARI - SUD AFRICA Day 4: Kalahari CBDC - Botswana (Sun, 9 July) Overnight: Springbokpan Guest Farm Springbokpan Guest Farm is the nearest Guest farm to the border of Botswana at McCarthy's Rest Border Post. 6 Day 5 & 6: Mabuasehube National Park (Mon, 10; Tue, 11 July) MABUASEUBE NP - BOTSWANA Botswana's part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was formerly known as Gemsbok National Park, (28,400 square km) and lies in the extreme southwest of Botswana. The South African section was formerly known as Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and is 9,591 square kms in extent. There is no physical barrier between the two countries within the park. This allows wildlife to move freely and for many years there has been informal co-operation between the two authorities. This co-operation was formalised by the creation of the "Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park" on 12th May 2000 and the two former parks are now managed as a single entity, whilst still recognising the territorial integrity of each country. On the Botswana side, the park can be divided into three areas of focus as far as tourists are concerned - the Two Rivers section, the Wilderness Trail and the Mabuasehube section. Tourists entering from the Botswana side may travel around the South African part of the park at no extra cost and without any immigration formalities. Tourists wishing to leave the park into South Africa will find that there are immigration facilities in Two Rivers/Twee Rivieren. The pretty Mabuasehube section of the park is reached separately, either from Tsabong in the south or Tshane in the north or Kokotsha in the East. The route from the south will be described first. The turnoff in Tsabong is signposted "Tshane, 240 km". Soon afterwards you take the major fork to the right. The first part of the road is gravelled and then becomes a sandy track. You cannot miss the new park entrance gate, about 116 km north of Tsabong Overnight: Camp Location: 23 km or 1h 7min from Mabuasehube East Gate. Situated on the south-western of the Mabuasehube Pan, camps 2 and 3 are close to each other, have shade shelters and share the same facilities, namely pit latrine, tap and rustic cold shower, which is sometimes visited by lions for water. 8 Day 7& 8: Maun Okavango Delta (Wed, 12 July; Thu, 13 July) The amazing foresight of Chief Moremi created one of the world's most famous reserves, conserving part of the Okavango Delta and the plains to its east. The reserve covers more than 4871 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, and the varied terrain includes savannah, winding waterways, and thick forest. This diversity supports an incredibly wide spectrum of wildlife, ranging from large herds of buffalo, wildebeest and zebra, to the rare sitatunga and lechwe antelope, and lion, cheetah and packs of wild dog in the open grasslands. The birdlife is prolific and includes most of the 550 bird species recorded on the Botswana national bird list. A range of luxury lodges in the reserve offer visitors the perfect base to experience this corner of paradise. Overnight: Audi Campsite Campsite (Muan) is a group of eight vaguely marked campsites each with their own fireplaces and some with a braai blending into one long camping area along the side of the Okavango Delta. Flush toilets and hot showers are provided, plus there are water taps dotted around the sites. The game is rich and varied and the birdlife is prolific. Elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, impala, hippo, leopard and lion all frequently sighted. Camping, Dinner Activities not included It is possible to book 1 day catered night in Okavango. 9 Mokoro Safari Packages in the Eastern Delta Background: The BaYei people came to the Okavango Delta hundreds of years ago, bringing with them, their traditional mode of transport the mokoro, a dug-out canoe made from a large straight tree such as a sausage tree or an ebony tree. The mokoro is ideally suited as transport in the delta as in can move quietly through shallow water, being pushed by the boatman using a long pole, moving along the narrow channels or cutting through the long grasses or papyrus. Audi Camp has a special 20-year relationship with the Morutsa Village community and in particular a man named Mr Worm (Rra Seboko). Most of our mokoro polers come from this community and the money brought in by guests is vital to their economy. Mr Worm is always very keen to show people round the village. The safari (Trips can be from one to three days. Departure for the delta is from Audi approximately 7:30 a.m.). You climb on a 4 x 4 vehicle and bash around on dirt tracks for approx. one and half hours (the actual time depends on the season and conditions of the road) and you ll be dropped at the mokoro station in the southern part of the delta. A mokoro poler will be introduced to you he or she will be your boatman and guide throughout the trip. Depending on the length of the trip, you can expect to spend a few hours poling on the mokoro, having lunch along the way, and doing game walks into the bush. If you are overnighting, the poler will find a beautiful island campsite and help you collect some firewood for cooking. Remember, this is the bush and there are no facilities it s back to basics: no showers, no toilets. While you are on the trip, remember to listen to your guide he has grown up and lived in this area most of his life. He will not only show you many fascinating things, he will also keep you out of trouble while you re in the bush. The polers do not carry firearms on the walks and you may well encounter elephant, hippo, or even lion. At the end of your tour, an Audi Camp vehicle will pick you up at a prearranged time and bring you back to base camp in Maun. 10 Day 9: Okavango Panhandle (Fri, 14 July) The main water source feeding the Okavango Delta, the Panhandle is a stretch of the Okavango River that follows a more-or-less straight course for approximately 70 kilometres before entering the wetlands. It is a deep channel that offers excellent tiger and bream fishing, while the surrounding woodlands and the river s shallow waters teem with a myriad of birds. Several villages are dotted along the Panhandle, while, some 40 kilometres west, lie the Tsodilo Hills, with their plethora of tribal cave paintings, some dating back as far as 20, 000 years. There are also a number of well-established riverside camps that provide tourist accommodation. Overnight: Guma Lagoon Camp Guma Lagoon Camp is situated in the Okavango Panhandle and is a bird watchers' haven.if you are a spin or fly fisherman, Guma offers a large varity of fish including the Tiger-fish. The camp offers both self-catering and full board accommodation. Accommodation is provided in spacious canvas chalets, all en-suite and located on the edge and over looking the lagoon. Alternately we have seven campsites under shady tress with private ablutions. Guma also offers overnight camping trips into the Okavango delta on either mokoros or Boats. One can also explore the Okavango back waters at night with only a spot light and the stars as company. 11 Day 10: Bushmanland (Sat, 15 July) The large blank area in the northeast with very few roads or settlements is commonly known as Bushmanland. Like the Kaokoland in Namibia's northwest, this is an isolated and tough part of the country to travel in. On Botswanan border is the remote and seldom-visited Khaudum National Park, it is highly recommended that visitors to Khaudum should be in a convoy of at least two vehicles. Tsumkwe is the regional administrative centre and the largest settlement in the region but it is no more than a crossroads with a ramshackle collection of shops, trading stores and bottle shops. You may find Bushman art for sale in stalls or small shops: ostrich egg bracelets and necklaces and colourful beaded bags are the most common items. A few years ago you could camp for free anywhere in Bushmanland; these days this is discouraged and it's very important that the local people benefit from tourism to the region. Employment opportunities in the area are limited and most people don't have an income. They earn money from the selling of crafts and still collect food and hunt game as they have done for millennia to supplement their modern diet of maize meal porridge. Overnight: Tsumkwe Country Lodge TUCSIN (The University Centre for Studies in Namibia) bought Tsumkwe Lodge in 2014 from the Namibia Country Lodges Group. The TUCSIN TSUMKWE Hospitality and Training Centre is now a multi-functional centre promoting inter alia, education and training. TUCSIN became involved because this was seen as an opportunity for offering education and training to the marginalized San community who can no longer survive exclusively by hunting and gathering. The need to integrate community members and in particular the Ju/ hoan San Bushmen, who live in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, is of cardinal importance. It requires a well-informed approach with respect for the precious - but rare - value systems of traditional hunter-gatherer societies. TUCSIN considers the lodge as an opportunity for involving the marginalised San community who live in the area. A hands-on approach to work should lead to training, study and eventual employment. TUCSIN TSUMKWE operates as any other lodge in Namibia catering for local and international visitors to the area. Accommodation complemented by personal hosting and cultural excursions to Ju/ hoansi villages form part of the day to day function of this Hospitality and Training facility. 13 Day 11: Etosha National Park (Sun, 16 July) The Etosha National Park is Namibia's premiere game viewing experience, situated in the northwest of Namibia and is an area well known for its wildlife. Vegetation ranges from dense bush to open plains attracting a diversity of wildlife. In the heart of the Park is The Etosha Pan - a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000sq kilometres. Dry and shimmering for most of the year, the pans fill up with water after good rains to a depth which is seldom deeper than 1m. In the dry season wildlife is attracted to perennial springs and waterholes that makes for excellent game viewing. Within the park are three large public rest camps catering for the more budget orientated traveller. There are several smaller establishments on the outskirts of the park on private land offering a more intimate and comprehensive experience. All of these establishments offer excellent value for money. Overnight: Halali Campsite In an otherwise flat area Halali Camp is perched between a few hills and koppies. Thicker vegetation makes this popular with leopard, rhino and elephant. Situated halfway between Namutoni and Okaukuejo the Halali Rest Camp centrally located in close proximity of some of the most popular waterholes of the Etosha National Park. A short walk will take you to the camp s floodlit waterhole with excellent day and night game viewing. Halali is the German word for the traditional ending of a hunt. The camp signifies the end of game hunting and the rise of eco-tourism in Namibia. Halali offers active guests the largest pool in the park and its strategic location between Namutoni and Okaukuejo makes it a great stopover for lunch, ice cream, a cool drink or just petrol. 14 KUNENE - OPUWO Day 12: Opuwo passing through Kunene (Mon, 17 July) One of just five perennial rivers in Namibia, the Kunene is an invaluable source of water for the local Himba people, and it has been the mainstay of their existence for hundreds of years. For travellers, the river s most striking feature is the Epupa Falls, which cascade over a distance of more than a kilometre downstream, with a total vertical drop of around 60 metres. White water rafting and kayaking are both popular pursuits on the Kunene. Overnight: Opuwo Contry Lodge Camping Five exclusive campsites under huge Ana and Makalani trees allow for a camping of tranquillity in a secluded, shady and quiet corner along the Kunene River. The Epupa campsites combine the use of local material with pleasing attention to detail to allow for a memorable stay in Namibia. 15 Day 13: Kaokoveld (Tue, 18 July) The Kaokoveld is a dry, mountainous and relatively undeveloped region that takes in the harsh beauty of the Skeleton Coast and the coppery sands of the northern Namib Desert. The area is inhabited by three main ethnic groups the Damara, Herero and Himba people each with their unique customs, traditions and rituals. Overnight: Purros Campsite Puros Community Campsite has six campsites - each with its own flushing toilet and warm shower. Braai (barbeque) facilities are avaialble. Puros Bush Lodge offers accommodation in self-catering bungalows with hot water. Bedding and towels are provided. There is a communual kitchen and fridge available. 16 Day 14: Damaraland (Wed, 19 July) Huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of open plains and spectacular rock formations. The major attractions are Spitzkoppe, the Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerklip and the Petrified Forest. Overnight: Kamanjab Rest Camp Kamanjab Rest Camp is situated only 3 km west of the town of Kamanjab, in Namibia's northwestern Kunene Region, in an area known as Damaraland. The rest camp s 4 guest bungalows en-suite and 8 clean, well-equipped camping sites with communal facilities are situated amidst a shade-giving Mopane Tree forest and provide comfortable overnight options to suit different travel budgets. 17 Optional Twyfelfontein Rock Art Petrified Forest Organ Pipes Twyfelfontein Rock Art Twyfelfontein is a World Heritage Site boasting one of the richest rock art concentrations in Africa. Thousands of tourists come to this site each year to view some 2, 500 Stone Age rock engravings. The area is home to 17 rock art sites, which collectively encompass 212 engraved stone slabs. There are an additional 13 sites displaying rock paintings. Petrified Forest Situated approximately 50 kilometers west of the town of Khorixas, in an area of open veld, lies a large deposit of massive tree trunks that have "turned to stone" through a process of diagenesis. These petrified tree trunks are up to 34metres long, 6 metres in circumference and are approximately 260 million years old. Due to the lack of root or branch remains, it s believed that the trees were washed down an ancient river to the site in a massive flood. RegNo..CC/2014/01756

18 Day 15: Damaraland (Thu, 20 July) Huge, untamed and ruggedly beautiful Damaraland is an exceptionally scenic landscape of open plains and spectacular rock formations. The major attractions are Spitzkoppe, the Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerklip and the Petrified Forest. Overnight: Spitzkoppe Campsite Camping at Spitzkoppe is world famous. A mountain oasis in the Namib desert, with unique oversized boulders and secret caves, allows the visitor to camp in complete peace and tranquillity. With the majestic Namibian "Matterhorn" as backdrop, and with the next camping site kilometers away, each visitor "owns" the mountain during his time in the campsite. Sunsets are spectacular, but only when night falls you are reminded what that over used word awesome truly means. Living in a city and have forgotten the unearthly potential that stars embody. At Spitzkoppe, they stretch from horizon to horizon, shimmering in the dry air, unfettered by light pollution or air pollution.
