Ghana Power Sector Reforms which started in mid-90s has started to accelerate The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), the independent transmission network operator, was operationaliazed in 2008 In many countries, given their market size, there appears to be little impetus to reform

20 WAPP Investment requirement over the period approximates US$9 billion over the next decade From November 2009 to December 2010, WAPP has mobilised about Euro 376 million and US$ 205 million for the preparation and implementation of WAPP Priority Projects. It includes: 1. Euro million (EIB, WB, KfW, AfDB and EBID) for the development of the Cote d Ivoire Liberia - Sierra Leone Guinea (CLSG) Power System 2. US$ million for the 225kV Bolgatanga (Ghana) Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) Interconnection project 3. Euro 27 million for the construction of the Lome C - Sakete 330kV line. 4. Guinea Mali Interconnection Project 5. 64MW WAPP Mount Coffee Hydro Power Project, supply of HFO and the expansion of Power Plant in Bushrod Island in Liberia 6. Han (Ghana) Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) Sikasso Bamako (Mali) Interconnection Project.
21 CONCLUSION Abundant energy resources within ECOWAS region Inadequate power supply demand in most of the countries in the sub-region Unequal geographic distribution of resources High cost of electric energy in most countries in the region WAGP is the demonstration of the potential of regional coordination The successful development of the WAPP will better provide electricity for more people in the sub-region
