ULTIMATE TANZANIA: EXPLORING THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND JULY 16-30, 2016 On this ultimate safari, follow the evolution of humankind where it happened, from our closest living relatives among the apes, to early hominins, to modern humans, all while observing some of Africa's most impressive wildlife. Begin by tracking chimpanzees in the remote Mahale Mountains. Then, traverse the game-filled Serengeti, stopping at Olduvai Gorge, where many key fossils of early hominins and their stone tools were discovered. Continue to the arid shoes of Lake Eyasi where one of the world's last hunter-gatherer tribes survives. Visit the semi-nomadic, pastoralist tribes of the Maasai Steppe. Complete your journey in the rural and urban environments of contemporary Tanzania. STUDY LEADERS: Tanya Smith, Associate Professor of Human Evolutionary Biology Smith studies human development, evolution, and behavior, employing knowledge of tooth growth to document a fundamental human adaptation: the costly yet advantageous shift from a live fast and die young strategy to the live slow and grow old strategy. Smith teaches courses on Human Origins and Evolution, Human Evolutionary Anatomy, and Neanderthals and has conducted primatological fieldwork in Madagascar, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Uganda, and visited many ancient human fossil sites across the world. Zarin Machanda, College Fellow in Human Evolutionary Biology Zarin Machanda received her PhD from the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. Her research revolves around understanding the factors that shape the quality and development of social relationships among primates and specifically chimpanzees. Zarin has spent the last 14 years working with both captive and wild chimpanzees. She has spent almost three years living and conducting research in western Uganda. GROUP SIZE: guests PRICING: $11,995 DOUBLE / $14,995 SINGLE
SCHEDULE BY DAY B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner Enjoy a welcome dinner and the full Tanzanian hospitality that comes with it. Overnight: Greystoke Mahale Campe (B, L, D) SATURDAY, JULY 16 DEPART U.S. FOR TANZANIA SUNDAY, JULY 17 ARRIVAL INTO ARUSHA Arrive this evening into Arusha, Tanzania where you will be warmly welcomed. Transfer to the comfortable Rivertrees Country Inn. Have a snack at Rivertrees and enjoy the serenity of the surrounding forests and streams. Overnight: Rivertrees Country Inn (Snack) MONDAY, JULY 18 ARUSHA TO MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK Depart Arusha on an early morning flight to Mahale Mountains National Park near Tanzania's westernmost border. The Mahale Mountains rise up from the shores of Lake Tanganyika reaching elevations of 8,000 feet. The spectacular scenery and the lack of roads or vehicles makes it one of the most exclusive and peaceful retreats in Tanzania. The remote setting also allows the fragile and rich eco-systems of the park to remain intact. Your luxury camp is located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika the world s second deepest lake and its longest freshwater lake. Upon arrival, you will be met by a representative from your camp and taken by boat to one of Tanganyika s remote shores with the stunning Mahale Mountains as a backdrop. This afternoon spend time exploring this remote and peaceful area, where hippos, small antelope, and a diversity of birds can be spotted right from camp. TUESDAY, JULY 19 MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK A national park since 1985, Mahale is not as well-known as its neighbor to the north: Gombe Stream National Park, the longtime site of Jane Goodall s chimpanzee research institute. However, Mahale National Park is truly a hidden gem. It is 30 times larger than Gombe, with a greater mix of habitats, from savannah to miombo woodland, and a full diversity of wildlife. Mahale, of course, also has one of the largest populations of wild chimpanzees in the world, with up to a thousand individuals spread out over 20 communities. Conditions permitting, you will spend half the day trekking through the mountains in search of these miraculous primates in the dense rainforest. This may take place in the morning or afternoon, depending on the camp s schedule and chimpanzee movements of the night before. Observe them from only a few feet away as they feed, groom, play, and wrestle across the forest floor. Lightweight hiking boots with traction are a must. The rest of the day, you will be able to take up ventures around Lake Tanganyika, such as snorkeling or kayaking. Overnights: Greystoke Mahale Camp (B, L, D) WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK Today be prepared for exploration and potentially rigorous hiking. Lightweight hiking boots with good traction are a must, as are waterproof jacket, camera, and sense of adventure. It may require some effort to reach the chimps, but you'll find it's well worth it. Trek anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on chimp location today.
Even though many of the communities are habituated, tracking the chimps through the dense bamboo and mountain forests still takes patience, as well as the acute prowess of your guide, who can often spot the remains of recently used nests high in the trees. It s an adventure full of mystery, set beneath the mountain s highest peak, Nkungwe (8,069 feet), which is considered sacred by the local Batongwe people. Once you find them, spend a maximum of one hour in the presence of the chimps, conditions permitting. The chimp population is the largest in the wild but the chimps are still extremely vulnerable to outside forces, including climate change, poaching, and even the simple human cold. After trekking, rest at your camp, taking time to write in your journal, meet other travelers, or simply to immerse yourself in the surrounding wilderness. Overnight: Greystoke Mahale Camp (B, L, D) THURSDAY, JULY 21 MAHALE TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Depart Mahale by boat for the airstrip, for your short flight to Kogakuria in the northern Serengeti. You will be welcomed by your guides upon arrival at the airstrip. They will accompany you throughout your safari, offering cultural insights, wildlife spotting expertise, and in-depth knowledge of wildlife behavior. Spend an afternoon wildlife viewing in the Serengeti. The big cats often spend these hours lying drowsily about the plains and up in the trees while many antelope and other animals continue to graze. Once you return from wildlife viewing, take time to sit by the fire and relax. Exchange stories of the day, write in your journals or simply enjoy the fresh evening breeze. Overnight: Northern Serengeti Nyumba (B, L, D) FRIDAY, JULY 22 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Today go on full-day wildlife viewing drive in the Serengeti. Your expert guide will point out wildlife that few others could hope to spot, whether a leopard well-concealed in the trees or a lion deep in the savannah grasses. Often misunderstood, the Great Migration is a perpetual, year-round process involving over one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra who roam the plains quietly, in search of food and water. While some antelope and hyena may follow the herds, other animals remain in their territories or have separate migratory patterns. The migration s most dramatic moments often occur when large numbers of wildebeest and zebra make river crossings, during which they must elude predators in a desperate fight for survival. There is no telling exactly when these highly dramatic movements will occur, but all safari-goers are sure to see plenty of Wildebeest and zebra while in Tanzania. Enjoy your lunch outdoors in a scenic spot. This evening spend some time at your Nyumba in the Serengeti. Before dinner, enjoy a workout, utilizing the Nyumba s Keep Fit Kit, or just put your feet up and relax in and around the dining tent, exchanging safari tales with your fellow travelers. Overnight: Northern Serengeti Nyumba (B, L, D) SATURDAY, JULY 23 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK On the journey to your next Nyumba camp, there will be plenty to see along the way. Perhaps you will come across a chase between predator and prey; maybe you will spot a wake of vultures; or maybe you will be lucky enough to find a leopard relaxing high in the limbs of an acacia tree. What better way to enjoy a view of the Serengeti plains than over a satisfying, relaxing lunch at camp. This afternoon continue to explore the pristine landscapes of the Serengeti with your guide's uncanny wildlife spotting instincts leading the
way. Expansive plains, rolling hills, dramatic granite outcrops and riverine valleys are home to an endless variety of fascinating creatures, from the lowly dung beetle to the impressive elephant. Or you may wish to opt out of the scheduled activities and remain at your Nyumba this afternoon. Write in your journal, do some reading, or get some exercise using one of the camp's Keep Fit Kits. Overnight: Central Serengeti Nyumba (B, L, D) SUNDAY, JULY 24 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK TO On the drive from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will make a short stop at Olduvai Gorge, a deep ravine and site of fossilized remains of animals and hominids that date as far back as two million years. Take a tour of the excavation site guided by an archeologist. Continuing your drive, you will pass Maasai herding their cattle alongside the road. The Maasai are allowed to live in boma settlements throughout the conservation area. In the afternoon, rest at your Nyumba, enjoying the views as you write in your journal or simply put your feet up and relax. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Tanzanian dinner this evening. Rich with spices and fresh local vegetables, this is a chance to sample the best of local cuisine. (Please note that this does not include game meat.) Overnight: Ngorongoro Nyumba (B, L, D) the crater, the alkaline Lake Magadi serves as an important water source, also attracting flamingo flocks during the dry season. Nearby, the small Lerai Forest, with its yellow fever acacia trees, provides shade and shelter for wildlife. You will often see baboons, vervet monkeys, and even elephants in its thicket. Thorny bush, grasslands, hippo pools and a second small lake are also found on the floor. You ll soon see why Ngorongoro is considered to be among the world s great wonders. You will have a bush lunch on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Relax at your Nyumba this evening. Set on the crater rim, the campsite offers stunning views of the highlands surrounding Ngorongoro. After dinner, enjoy a warm fire as well as the company of your guide and fellow travelers as you gaze up at the stars. Overnight: Ngorongoro Nyumba (B, L, D) TUESDAY, JULY 26 TO THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY This morning depart Ngorongoro Conservation area for The Great Rift Valley. This valley offers a dramatically different, drier landscape. Be sure to take in the views from the top of the escarpment onto the plains below. After lunch at your lodge, settle in at Kisima Ngeda tented camp. Explore the ground, including a system of elevated walkways that are perfect for bird watching. Later this afternoon enjoy the pool at the lodge. Overnight: Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp (B, L, D) MONDAY, JULY 25 Spend the day in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a habitat teeming with one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in the world. Sometimes there are more than 30,000 animals in and around the crater, including black rhino, cheetah, lion, hyena, eland, and numerous antelope. On the floor of WEDNESDAY, JULY 27 GREAT RIFT VALLEY Early in the morning, you will head into the bush to meet members of the Hadza, one of the world's last hunter-gatherer tribes. Join the men as they hunt or collect honey, or go gathering with the women. The activity will not
be pre-arranged, as it is based solely on the tribe's needs on the given day. Lunch will be at your lodge. This afternoon, make your way to a Datoga village for a rare glimpse into this pastoralist culture. Meet men and women of the community as they go about their daily lives, visiting a typical home and a local blacksmith, who makes the brass jewelry favored by Datoga women, as well as the spear tips prized by men. Overnight: Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp (B, L, D) THURSDAY, JULY 28 GREAT RFT VALLEY TO THE NGORONGORO HIGHLANDS Today, you will venture north from the Great Rift Valley to the lush green hills of the Ngorongoro Highlands. The drive will take several hours over sometimes-rough roads, but there is plenty to see along the way and you will arrive in time for lunch today at Gibb s farm, where nearly every ingredient comes fresh from the estate s organic farm. This evening, relax at Tembo Fire, an open-air sitting area nestled at the foot of the organic gardens. The tradition of the nightly campfire began as a purely practical measure to ensure that elephants or tembo in Swahili are not tempted to feast in the organic gardens at night. It soon became a popular place to sit and relax at the end of the day. Now, with a comfortable seating area and full bar, the Tembo Fire makes a wonderful place for conservation, story-telling or star-gazing. You will be served coffee or tea and a light snack before departing the highlands. In Arusha, stop at the Cultural Heritage Center, a shopping mainstay, attracts many travelers each year with its abundance of wooden carvings, artifacts, apparel, and crafts. The center also has Tanzanite and other gemstones for sale. While the center caters mostly to tourists, they also have wonderful cultural displays and a separate wing that displays some of the finest African art in Tanzania. During a special farewell lunch, you will have time to say goodbye to your safari companions as you prepare for your departures. You may wish to exchange addresses or take some final photographs, to help preserve fond memories of an extraordinary trip. Enjoy a day room in Arusha, resting up and readying yourself for your departure. Overnight: Day Room at Mount Meru Hotel (B, L, Snack) SATURDAY, JULY 30 DEPART FOR U.S. Overnight: Gibb's Farm - Cottage Room (B, L, D) FRIDAY, JULY 29 DEPART HIGHLANDS FOR ARUSHA Rise early to take in the delightful chorus of songbirds from your verandah: the twee-wee trill of the yellow-throated long claw, the belllike boo-boo of the tropical boubou, and the soft warble of the scarlet-chested sunbird.
