Featuring in-depth explorations in two of Alaska s most iconic national parks Denali and Kenai Fjords we ll also visit the charming, small mountain towns of Fairbanks, Talkeetna and Seward, concluding our adventure in Alaska s largest city, Anchorage. With the combination of fascinating Native culture and phenomenal natural history, educational enrichment will abound during our field trips to hike, canoe and kayak with the safety of expert naturalist guides. 3 Yale Study Leader paul turner Paul Turner is Professor and Departmental Chair of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University, and is a faculty member in Microbiology at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Turner s research interests include: evolutionary biology, evolutionary medicine, infectious disease, microbiology, phage therapy, RNA viruses, vector-borne disease, and virology. He uses an interdisciplinary approach in his research laboratory, employing techniques from microbiology, population genetics, genomics, molecular biology and mathematical modeling to study hypotheses in ecology and evolutionary biology. Paul Turner received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He regularly serves on committees for the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and the American Society for Microbiology. He was elected chair of international meetings, such as the 2013 Gordon Research Conference on Microbial Population Biology, and the 2018 Jacques Monod Conference on Viral Emergence. He has authored nearly 100 scholarly journal articles, reviews and book chapters. Professor Turner is sure to add a great deal to your Alaska experience! ARRIVE FAIRBANKS (D) Monday, July 17 Independent arrival into Alaska s largest interior city, Fairbanks. Visit the popular Museum of the North to gain valuable understanding of native cultures and traditional Alaskan life, followed by a visit to the famous Alaska Pipeline. This evening, enjoy dinner and orientation. Overnight Pikes Waterfront Lodge Denali wildlife drive through the park, watching for caribou, moose, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, resident and migratory birds. Our backdrop is the awe-inspiring Alaska Range, and when conditions are clear, gaze at the wonder of North America s highest peak, Denali! Settle in to our backcountry retreat with savory dinner, in the heart of Denali s exclusive Kantishna Valley. Along the way, enjoy an outdoor picnic lunch and short hike through Denali State Park. Once in Talkeetna, tour the quaint downtown and get a taste of local life. Overnight Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge SEWARD (B/L/D) Friday, July 21 Travel to the seacoast town of Seward for an introduction to Alaska s stunning seacoast with a special visit to the Alaska SeaLife Center, a marine wildlife and maritime museum. The Center s 2-story aquarium allows visitors to watch playful puffins dive and fly underwater. Next, gain up-close, intimate views of the massive Exit Glacier on a guided hike. Learn about glacial history and tectonic activity while snapping photos of the icy blue wonder, and recap the day s activity during a fabulous dinner at Resurrection Roadhouse. Overnight Seward Windsong Lodge KENAI FJORDS (B/L/D) Saturday, July 22 Board a small boat bound for Kenai Fjords National Park home to an array of glaciers and marine wildlife including whales, Steller sea lions, sea otters, puffins and more! Enjoy lunch in front of a calving glacier before arriving at the exclusive lodge destination: Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. 6 Itinerary, cont d Program Cost KENAI FJORDS (B/L/D) Sunday, July 23 Explore the wild delights of Kenai Fjords National Park through a wide array of activities: guided naturalist walks, sea kayaking, group canoe paddles and more. All activities are suitable for beginners and require no previous experience. Mix-and-match options will keep younger travelers engaged, in addition to special scavenger hunt activities involving Alaska s native flora and fauna. Share stories from your day s adventure with other guests in the cozy lounge, which serves up glacier margaritas and tasty treats. Overnight Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge ANCHORAGE (B/L) Monday, July 24 This morning allows another opportunity to kayak, canoe or beach comb for a halfday before boarding our boat for the return wildlife cruise to Seward. A short rail tour, featuring a farewell dinner, will bring us back to Alaska s largest city of Anchorage tonight. Overnight The Lakefront Anchorage ANCHORAGE - DEPARTURE Tuesday, July 25 Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, followed by hotel shuttles to connect with return flights home from Anchorage. The base cost this program is: $6750 per adult $5850 per youth (7-17 years old) (based on double occupancy) Single Supplement: $8125 per single Group size limited to 24 participants Note: Itinerary subject to minor changes. Accommodations Terms and Conditions Denali Backcountry Lodge Nestled deep inside Denali National Park on the banks of Moose Creek, Denali Backcountry Lodge has direct access to the local Kantishna Hills area to host amazing guided hikes. Non-guided activities such as goldpanning, biking and casual flyfishing included. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge As the only lodge inside Kenai Fjords National Park, this exclusive property boasts private guest cabins situated in a wooded setting, overlooking Pedersen lagoon, with glacier views. Keep an eye out for curious sea otters and seals in the lagoon which may pop up to say, Hi! MOBILITY AND FITNESS TO TRAVEL The right is retained to decline to accept or to retain any person as a member of this trip who, in the opinion of Yale Educational Travel ( YET ) and Alaska Wildland Adventures ( AWA ) is unfit for travel or whose physical or mental condition may constitute a danger to themselves or to others on the trip, subject only to the requirement that the portion of the total amount paid which corresponds to the unused services and accommodations be refunded. Passengers requiring special assistance, including without limitation those who permanently or periodically use a wheelchair, must be accompanied by someone who is fit and able to assist them, and who will be totally responsible for providing all required assistance. CANCELLATION In addition to independent airline cancellation penalties, all cancellations for any reason whatsoever will be subject to a $300 per person cancellation fee. Cancellations from 120 to 91 days prior to departure will result in forfeiture of $600 per person; 90 to 46 days 50% of the tour cost per person; cancellation from 45 days up to the time of departure will result in 100% forfeiture of the entire cost of the trip.
