1 2O1Ll2012 Atls Mountins Trekking ltinerries Ascent of Mount Toubkl Itinerries: 2 Dys Ascent of Mount Toubkl Dy 1: Drive from Mrrkech to lmlil nd trek to Toubkl Refuge vi Aremd & the Mizne Vlley Leving the city behind we drive south tody, towrds the crggy peks nd plunging vlleys of the Toubkl Mssif. Crossing the Houz Plin we pss through the tiny town of Asni, from where our rod begins to climb towrds the foothills of the Mssif. Below us the vlley of the Oued Rhirhi stretches out into the distnce nd smllvillges cling to the sides of the steep hills s we mender our wy towrds the villge of imlil. Here we leve our vehicle nd, in the compny of our mountin guide, begin our trek, heding long the Mizne Vlley, first towrds the villge of Aremd nd then onto the shrine of Sidi Chmrouch. Built on morine spur overlooking the vlley floor, Aremd is the lrgest villge in the vlley nd provides n interesting mix of trditionl terrced frming, gites nd streets tht seem to be permnently gridlocked by gots nd cttle. For genertions the locl Berber villgers hve worked these lnds, producing corn, pottoes nd wlnuts from the hrsh lndscpe. Continuing est nd crossing the flood plin our route tkes us long mule trcks nd up into the high rocky cliffs bove the vlley. Crossing the river we eventully come to the pstorl shrine of Sidi Chmrouch, which ttrcts tourists nd pilgrims like (lthough only Muslims re llowed to cross the stone bridge to visit the mrbout shrine itself). The villge sits besides smll wterfll, jumbled cluster of houses tht seem to melt together into n nrchic mss. From here the tril continues to climb stedily, snking nd zigzgging its wy up to the snowline nd the Toukbl Refuge (3206m), our stop for the night. Approx 4-5hrs wlking. 2 20L1,/2012 Atls Mountins Trekking ltinerries Dy 2: Trek to summit of Jebel Toubkl(4165m); return to lmlil Erly this morniirg we mke our ttempt on the summit of Jebel Toukbl, the highest pek in Northern Afric. Our route tkes us up the south cirque, crossing the strem bove the refuge nd then heding cross one of the mountins numerous scree fields, where we will hve to negotible seemingly endless crpet of boulders nd rocks. The wlking is reltively strightforwrd, but the scree nd the ltitude will mke the going quite difficult in prts, however, the views long the wy mke the journey more thn worthwhile. Cresting the ridgeline we find ourselves on the plteu, from where it is short wlk to the summit nd the vists out cross the surrounding lndscpe re quite brethtking. From here there re unrestricted views in every direction, from the Mrrkesh Plin to the High Atls in the north nd s fr south s the Anti-Atls nd the Shr. Pliny, the gret Romn scholr, once described the High Atls Mountins s "the most fbulous mountins in ll of Afric" nd from our vntge point high bove the vlley it is esy to understnd why. Dy 3: Dy4: D'knt - tizi n'tgdlte - tizi oussem : we set off for our morning's 3 hours hike up through groves of wlnut trees, fields of corn nd brley to greet the mny sheep nd gotherders - nd women nd children bent over with 20kg lods of fggots nd dried herbs. We trverse the tizi n'tgdlte to the descent mongst the juniper trees till we come to smll spring set mongst the trees, where we will stop for our picnic.once refreshed, we re off down winding trcks of upper slopes for some 3hours to come to smll river t the beginning of the vlley of ssif n'it oussden. from here we enter the villge of tizi oussem (1850m) then up to the summer villge Of Tmsoult for our cmp or gite. tizi oussem -- Tizi M'zzik -- lmlil, Trek to smll wterfll t Azib Tmsoulte nd return to cross the Tizi 'n Mzik pss (2,500m). Dy4: Dy 5 : Âzte TAMSoULT -Tlzl AGUELZIM - TOUBKAL REFUGE. fter brekfst, we now set out estwrds on modertely difficult hike up winding mule trcks to the Tizi Aguelzim (3550m), thence further 3 hours south-est to the Toubkl Refuge which mrks the spring snowline t 32O7m, where we shll hve our dinner, in bivouc round the Refuge. TOUBKAL REFUGE - SUMMIT JBEL TOUBKAL- SlDl CHAMHAROUCH - lmlil - Mrrkech A very erly brekfst to set out round 6m., to ttin, fter three hour steep climb, the highest pek in the Mghreb (4167m). The pnorm from here is simply stunning. Whenever you re redy, we shll tke the lkkhibi Sud or South Cirque for strightforwrd - with your guide - 2 to 3 hour descent bck to the Refuge for picnic. After lunch We shll now set off towrds the north long steeply descending, zigzgging trils of the higher slopes of the Vlley of the Assif n'lsouhounem n'ougounss towrds the Shrine of Sidi Chmhrouch. There is constnt movement of people coming down from the mountins, nd n equl supply of ctivity from those bout to embrk on their dventure. We meet our mule tem nd once ll our ger is loded we begin wlking long the vlley towrds Tcheddirt, some 8kms beyond lmlil. Soon the tril begins to rise s we climb up to the pss t Tizi n'tmtert (2279m). We then descend to the pretty villge of Ouneskr nd continue, for further hlf-hour or so, to Tcheddirt (3000m), where we generlly cmp ner the river. Mels included: L brekfst, L lunch, 1 dinner. Dy 2: Dy 3: Tcheddirt-Azib Likemt, Crossing the vlley we begin long, slow scent to the pss t Tizi Likemt (3555m). The going is quite tough s there is considerble mount of loose scree on the ground. At the top we enjoy our first fine view of the Toubkl mssif before long downhill descent to the villge of Azib Likemt, where we cmp for the night. Azib Likemt-Tizi n'ouri-amsouzert This long, but reltively esy, dy tkes us through vriety of contrsting lndscpes. From Tizi n'ouourine (3120m) we enjoy further views of the Toubkl mssif, including the summit, the est fce nd the lfni Dome (3876m). The tril leds on towrds Amsouzert, one of the most striking villges in the region, where we spend the night - dormitorystyle - in simple villge Gite. 16 2OL1,/2012 Dy4: Dy5: Dy 6: Atls Mountins Trekking ltinerries Amsouzert-lfni Lke, West of Amsouzert re severl smll villges, which we explore s we mke our wy towrds lfni Lke, the only lke in the mssif. lt is memorble s'rftht, surrounded by rocky mountins nd gint heps of rubble, nd is unusully deep. We expect to rrive by lunchtime nd spend the fternoon relxing t the shore. We cmp tonight in this re. lfni Lke-Nelter Hut: By now we should be both fit nd cclimtised, nd redy to tckle the hrdest dy of the trek. We mke our wy long steep pth tht leds up seemingly endless scree slope. At length we rech the pss t Tizi n'ounoums (3664m), nrrow ledge between two shfts of rock. From here it is long zigzg descent to Nelter Hut, mountin refuge where we spend the night (or lterntively cmp outside). Mt. Toubkl Summit- lmlil : We leve before dwn, following well-worn route to the summit. lf conditions re good it should tke no more thn 2-3 hours to rech the summit, where we enjoy expnsive views of the entire Atls rnge nd the Mrrkech plins beyond. Returning to bse, we then descend firly rpidly to the villges of Sidi Chmhrouch nd Aremd, before following the Mizne River, long well-forested tril, to the trilhed t lmlil.
