Many thanks. the trip On this exciting new adventure with Wild Women On Top we will follow trails through traditional villages to alpine pastures set beneath the impressive backdrop of the High Atlas. We will descend into lush green valleys with terraces and mud walled houses and cross high passes to absorb the impressive mountain landscape. Our goal on this trip is to attempt the two summits of Mt Toubkal and Ouanoukrim. Mt Toubkal (4167m) is the highest mountain in North Africa and Ouanoukrim is the second (4089m). The trek to the summit for both these mountains is challenging but non technical and does not require any mountaineering experience, however you will need a good level of fitness as trek days can be long and the terrain undulating with steep ascents and descents. On a clear day the panoramic views from the summits are spectacular. In the company of your muleteer and cook you will experience the traditional Berber hospitality.there is ample time to relax amongst the walnut trees, sipping mint tea and taking in the pace of life in the mountains. Our trip begins in Marrakesh, one of the most important artistic centres in the Islamic world and concludes in Essaouira, with its tranquil squares and cafes, narrow lanes and whitewashed houses set against an ocean backdrop. A wonderful way to end this extraordinary journey. We hope you can join us. wild women on top team benefits Wild Women On Top Adventures: Team Benefits & Bonuses 2015 When you join a Wild Women On Top Adventure, you become part of an incredible team. 5 responsible travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible & sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website trip grading This expedition involves trekking through undulating country, often untracked, for up to six hours a day at a steady pace. To undertake this level of activity you will need a good level of trekking fitness and be sure footed. Some days involve walking over rugged terrain, including boulders, scree and heavily vegetated ground. As a minimum, we recommend 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise three times a week for three months leading up to your trek. adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant of travel agent. DAY 5 Thurs 11 June - Matate 1800m - Azib Tingrhite 2100 m - Tizi Oudite 2219 m - Tizi Oussem 1785 m A short climb away is the Tizi n Oudite pass at 2200 m (approx. 3:30 hrs). After enjoying the views you will descend into the Azzaden valley and walk through a juniper forest. You will soon come across great views out to the colourful villages of Id Aissa, Tizi Zougaghen and Tiziane. You continue your trek up the valley to the village of Id Aissa, notable for its mosque visible throughout the valley, and on to the village of Tizi Oussem. Approx. 5:30 hrs of walking Overnight village house DAY 6 Friday 12 June - Tizi Oussem 1850 m - Azib Tizikert 2460 m Apprx. Approx 5 hours walking After breakfast you will leave Tizi Oussem and head up along the valley of Oussem. Slowly you will ascend up to Azib Iminouatss and follow the trail to the small and narrow pasture of Azib Tamsoult at 2160 m. Before lunch you will have a short visit to the waterfalls at Ighouliden, before continuing on for a further hour up to Azib Tzikert where the next overnight camp will be. DAY 7 Saturday 13 June - Azib Tzikert 2460 m Neltner camp 3050m Approx 6 hours of walking You will leave camp and walk for about 30 minutes where you will then find the large mule trail. You will follow this as you head to the mountain chains of Aguelzim, where you will find a zigzag trail that leads up a couloirs for 400m to the first pass. Here a panoramic view to Tizi Oussem and the Haouz plain can be seen. The trail ascends another 100m, before you reach the 3430m high pass of Tizi Aguelzim (approx. 4 hours of walking).you will have a great view to Djebel Toubkal before descending on the trail rocky at first - to the Neltner camp (approx. 2 hours of descent). Tonight you will prepare for the summit tomorrow. DAY 8 Sunday 14 June - Neltner camp 3050m -Toubkal 4167m -Neltner camp 3050m Approx 8 hours walking We will make an early start for our attempt on Toubkal, North Africa s highest peak for our 3-4 hour trek to the summit (4167m). First we must traverse long scree slopes; tiring terrain at this altitude and we must proceed slowly to conserve energy. Higher sections are more rocky and there is little vegetation. Once at the summit the views are spectacular, and although wind and cold conditions mean we will not linger long, we have time to enjoy the scenes of surrounding peaks of the Atlas mountains and down to the plains around Marrakesh far in the distance. We then begin the descent back, on the same route, to Neltner camp (3050m), where we will have a late lunch and enjoy a well earned rest after a hard days trekking. DAY 9 Monday 15 June - Summit Ouanoukrim peak (4088m) - Neltner (3050m) Approx. 6-7 hours of walking Today will truly test your endurance and is only an option for those who are still feeling fit after Toubkal and well acclimatised. We climb from Neltner camp up in direction of Tizi n Ouanoums, then follow the trail to Tizi n Ouagane at 3780m. From this pass it is an approx. 20 minutes steep climb up to the ridge of the mountain, from where we follow the ridge to the summit at 4088m. The summit allows for a great panoramic view (if good weather) of the Toubkal summit, Tazararte plateau or even to Anti Atlas and Tizi n Test region as well as the valley of Souss on a very clear day. We descend via the same route to the Tizi n Ouagane. From here, if you are feeling fit and well 5 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Kate Harper 9/9/ :58:27 AM

From this summit we have a good view to the Lac Ifni (mountain Lake). Afterwards we head back to the pass and from here descend to Neltner camp for a well deserved lunch. DAY 10 Tuesday 16 June - Neltner camp 3050m - Imlil 1750m - Private Camp Today we descend down the valley, passing through the deeply religious village of Sidi Chamarouch. This area is also rich in wildflowers, and in spring we ll find the magnificent Peony Rose. We will also pass herds of goats traversing precarious mountain trails. We continue to Imlil where our trekking ends (approx 4.5 hours walking). We will have a short transfer to an area en-rout to Ouirgane where we set up a private luxury camp and enjoy a final celebratory dinner under the stars. DAY 11 Wednesday 17 June - To Essaouira For a change of pace today we head to the peaceful Peninsula town of Essaouira (approx 4 hours drive). With its Greek-like whitewashed walls and its mixture of Portuguese, French and Berber fortifications, it has a completely different flavour to our previous destinations. Protected by the trade winds, Essaouira is a handicraft centre, particularly for artisans working with sandal, cedar and lemon wood. We will visit the city with our guide who will give you ideas of things you might like to do during your time at leisure in Essaouira. We can also take a relaxing walk along the Atlantic coastline. Fishing is another of the main industries of the town. The fresh catch is a specialty of the restaurants and the harbour side fish markets - either are a must for lunch. They have occupied the area for at least 5000 years however their exact origins are unknown. As early as the 6th century BC Phoenician traders established depots on the Atlantic coast, forging relations with Berber tribes to enable the exploitation of raw materials. With the fall of Carthage in the 1st century CE (Common Era) the Romans annexed much of the northern coastal plain and allied themselves with Berber leaders which facilitated their control of economically viable regions, especially for the cultivation of wheat and olives. In the 5th century, the Roman presence ended with a wave of invasions by the Vandals, Visigoths and Byzantine Greeks and Christianity was introduced. There was already a significant Jewish presence at that time. In the 7th century, Arabs conquered the region bringing Islam to Morocco. Berber tribes adopted Islam, adapting 6 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Kate Harper 9/9/ :58:27 AM

7 it to encompass their folk traditions and beliefs. The first Muslim dynasty was founded by Idriss I, an Arab descendant of the Prophet Mohammed, who broke away from the Abbasid Caliphate based in Baghdad. Morocco achieved its greatest heights under subsequent Berber dynasties, the Almoravids and the Almohads who came from south of the Atlas Mountains and the Merinids from Figuig in the East. They embarked on a great wave of building and expansion, dominating the Maghreb and Andalusian Spain for over two centuries. In the mid 16th century, the region was ruled for close to 100 years by the Arab Saadian dynasty, followed in the mid 17th century by the Alaouite dynasty, claiming to be descendants of the Prophet and who reign to this day. King Mohamed VI is the current ruler of Morocco and has instituted considerable social reforms since he came to the throne in Prior to the First World War, when European powers were eyeing Morocco as a region of interest, the Algeciras Conference of 1906 conferred control of Morocco to France and Spain. The treaty of Fez resulted in Morocco becoming a French Protectorate in 1912, while Spain retained control of an enclave in the north and the Western Sahara. The French exploited Morocco s mineral wealth and built roads, french quarters in the major cities and military garrisons in the more remote areas. In 1944, the Istiqlal (Independence) Party was active in the move towards independence, which was finally proclaimed in Most Moroccans (over 98%) are Sunni Moslems of Arab, Arab Berber, Arabized Berber and Berber descent. There is also a minority of Gnaoua or Haratin descended from sub Saharan African slaves. The Jewish population has decreased considerably since the 1950s and the Christian population consists of foreign nationals, mainly French. Morocco s official language is Classical Arabic although Moroccan Arabic or Darija is the lingua franca. 12 million of Morocco s population of 31 million speak a Berber language (there are 3 regional languages, Riff, Shilha and Tamazight). Although education is compulsory to grade 5, Morocco s literacy rate remains around 50%. Morocco is renowned for its arts and crafts music, ceramics textiles and jewellery. Its incredibly diverse and stunning landscape, good roads, charming and hospitable people and delicious cuisine all contribute to an extraordinary feast for the senses and a very special experience for the visitor. climate Morocco s climate varies according to altitude and location. Coastal areas experience a Mediterranean climate tempered by winds from the southwest. At low altitudes, summers tend to be humid and warm. In the Alpine regions the summers are warm and dry with winters being extremely cold. Snow is not unusual at high altitude. Average temperatures range from degrees in the summer with the nights on the trek getting as low as 0 5 degrees in April and September. what you carry In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing (depending on the altitude, location and weather), a rainjacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip eze etc. Mules carry all group gear and your trek pack. equipment required A comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre departure information supplied on booking. acute mountain sickness When we ascend above 2500 meters our bodies have to acclimatise to the decreasing amount of the oxygen available. To allow our bodies to adjust we have structured our treks so that you ascend slowly, allowing acclimatisation to occur. However, during the acclimatisation process, you may experience some of the following symptoms. Headache Tiredness 7 Australian World Expeditions Pty Limited - Kate Harper 9/9/ :58:27 AM

8 Disturbed sleep Loss of appetite/nausea Shortness of breath Cough Palpitation Swelling of the hands and face Individuals acclimatise at different rates. Your best strategy is to take your time and drink plenty of water. These symptoms may not indicate the onset of A.M.S. and if you experience them it does not necessarily mean that you should not continue. All our group leaders have extensive first aid training and we urge you to communicate with the group leader at all times should you believe you have any symptoms in order that we can effectively monitor your symptoms. The only cure for Acute Mountain Sickness is to descend. Please note that your group leader has ultimate responsibility and may ask you to descend if symptoms persist. what s not included International airfares and departure taxes Travel Insurance Items of a personal nature such as phone calls, laundry, etc. Tips Bottled water and Aerated drinks Single supplement Meals not mentioned in the itinerary private groups WWOT Golden Rules 1.
