MOROCCO Winter Toubkal Climb High guide to client ratio Superlative winter hill trek The snow covered peaks of the Atlas Guided Group Departures Tour Grade C/D Tour Code - TNAW For dates and prices visit: Group Size:- Min 4 Max 12 Seasonal, daily departures also available for private parties of 2 or more persons travelling together
Introduction As the snow arrives on the peaks of the majestic High Atlas Mountains, not only does this present a landscape of scenic splendour but also great opportunities for winter hill-walking. As well as aiming to make a winter ascent of Jebel Toubkal (4167m), the highest summit in North Africa, the neighbouring peak of Ouanoukrim (4088m) is also a worthy objective. Although Toubkal is of course the highest and thus most people s principle objective, many find that Ouanoukrim affords a more interesting climb. Certainly both afford equally spectacular views across the snow covered High Atlas that on clear days can extend as far away as the Sahara. Whilst this trip does require the use of a walking ice-axe and crampons for both peak ascents and negotiating mostly moderately angled snow slopes, there is no technical climbing involved. With over 25 years of trekking and travelling experience in Morocco, here at Walks Worldwide we can justifiably claim to be THE WALKING HOLIDAY SPECIALISTS to this exotic country.. Walking conditions On the approach to Toubkal you ll be walking on mountain trails designed for mules linking the refuges and the villages. Usually snow is not encountered on the trails until above 3000m and the final approach to the Neltner Refuge (Toubkal Base Camp). The walks/ascents/descents will take the strong, regular hill walker around 6 to 9 hours each day. Conditions underfoot are usually straightforward on the trekking element to Neltner. Ascent and descent is a natural feature of this holiday. You will have a mule to carry your main baggage to your overnight accommodations you are free to walk each day carrying only your usual daypack. A good level of fitness and stamina is required. The ascent of Toubkal involves walking up moderately angled snow covered slopes, with some short, steeper sections. For Ouanoukrim it is much the same with the addition of encountering some steep ground that involves some straightforward scrambling over rocky terrain and requiring the use of hands is necessary before the summit itself. However, you can remain at the col if you do not wish to engage this section. A good level of fitness and stamina is essential for this trip, and previous winter mountain walking experience is desirable. The ascent of Toubkal and Ouanoukrim in full winter conditions will present a challenge even to regular winter hillwalkers. As snow conditions may vary considerably, walking times are for indicative purposes only. Clearly the amount (or lack of) snow affects the walking pace. Although previous winter mountain walking is not essential, this trip is not suitable for anyone without solid mountain walking experience Familiarity with the use of crampons and a walking ice axe is recommended, although there will be the opportunity for some practice in technique prior to ascents. If you are not confident in your mountain walking abilities, or experience please contact us to discuss.a full explanation of the trip grading can be found online at. You should ensure you are comfortable walking at this level of grading and are physically prepared for the trip. Trek staff This trip will be led by at least one qualified Moroccan English-speaking Mountain Guide with a great wealth of experience for winter ascents of Toubkal and Ouanoukrim. The winter guides used on this trip also receive annual training from a professional, qualified Swiss Mountain Guide. There will be a healthy ratio of guides per client that will be dependent upon the overall group size. As a general rule there will be 1 guide for 4-5 clients, 2 guides for 6-10 clients and 3 guides for clients. Each guide will also carry a safety rope and the lead guides decision as to whether a climb is to be attempted/abandoned is final.you will also have a muleteer/s and on certain occasions a cook. What you need to provide Your personal equipment as detailed in the clothing and equipment list later in this trip dossier. A 4 seasons sleeping bag will be required. A walking ice-axe and crampons will be required (available for rental-see clothing and equipment list section), and 4 season mountain walking boots are essential. The guides will not allow anyone improperly equipped to climb Toubkal or Ouanoukrim.
IMPORTANT-Due to the specialist nature of our holidays, day to day itineraries should be taken as a guide only, and as statements of intent and not contractual obligations. We regularly update our trip dossiers to take into account changes to trekking routes, accommodation, local transport etc. Such changes are a factor of this type of holiday and when made are out of necessity. Other factors such as adverse weather, unforeseen circumstances and other matters entirely out of our control etc can also lead to enforced changes during the course of the holiday. It is not possible to guarantee that any of our holidays will operate exactly as per the anticipated itinerary. The most current trip dossier will be made available on our website. We will also send you the most up to date trip dossier with your Final Joining Instructions approx. 2 weeks before departure and you should carefully check this for any changes that may affect your plans. Before booking you should read our Types of Trip and Essential and Useful information sections on including our Important Warning. Outline Itinerary Day Your 'at-a-glance' Itinerary Overnight Accn. 4 Day 1 Rendezvous at the group hotel in Marrakech in time for the 2000hrs pre-trek briefing. Most clients will fly to Menara International Airport, Marrakech. From here by far the easiest way to travel to the group hotel is to take a private taxi. Journey time is approx mins and costs around 8. See Joining Arrangements and transfers section later in this trip dossier. Hotel, Marrakech Day 2 After breakfast it s around 60 minutes from Marrakech to Asni by road, from where a further 30 minutes of driving up the mountain road that leads into the lower Mizane Valley bring us to the small Berber village of Aguersioual (1500m). From here we will take a horse-shoe trekking route to ultimately arrive at Imlil, the gateway to Toubkal. From Aguersioual we follow a mule trail that ascends up a side valley to a pass at 2050m. It s then down the trail and into the Imenane Valley and the village of Amskere and a steady incline to Tinerhourhine. A zig-zag trail then ascends continually to the Tizi n Tamatert (2279m) from where there are fine views of the High Atlas peaks including the Toubkal Massif (although the summit remains hidden). A further hour or so of straightforward descent through woodland then leads to Imlil (1740m). Walking time approx 6hrs, approx 950m ascent and 850m descent. Gite, Imlil Day 3 Once the mules are loaded with our baggage and supplies we begin our trek to the Neltner Refuge often referred to as Toubkal Base Camp. A short climb leads out Imlil passing the village of Aremd. From here a well-made mule track leads from Aremd all the way up to the recently extended refuge at the foot of the final slopes of Mount Toubkal. Today you will follow this as it leads up the Mizane River, surprisingly quite level initially, then climbing up to the holy shrine of Sidi Chamharouch after about one-and-a-half hours. As this is a Muslim place of worship, you must respect the local custom and not attempt to enter the shrine. There are however a number of small shops here to service both the local Muslim pilgrims as well as the tourists on their way to and from Mount Toubkal. Some tourist guide books refer to this place as the 'robbers den', not because you can expect to be robbed, but you can guarantee that the local Berbers will try to sell you all sorts of 'junk' souvenirs as well as soft drinks at inflated prices! The gradient is mostly moderate and the trail becomes a continual ascent to the valley head where the Neltner Refuge is located. Hopefully there will be snow at these elevations close by (although this is not always the case) for us to now practice iceaxe and crampon walking, self-arrest technique etc. If not, we may have to trek up a bit to find suitable conditions and then return to the refuge (3200m).Walking time to Neltner approx 5-6hours. 1200m ascent. Neltner Refuge, Toubkal Base Camp The sequence of days 4 and 5 may vary according to local conditions-weather, ground condition etc-the guide will decide, although in most instances it is envisaged that Ouanoukrim will be tackled before Toubkal. Day 4 Leaving the Neltner at 3200m early it s a gradual ascent that will be likely over snow covered ground up through the valley behind the Neltner to the Tizi n Ougane at 3735m. It s steady ascent through the valley initially, but steepens as you head up to the pass itself. From here the summit remains a further 90mins climb away. Anyone not wishing to make the ascent will easily be able to retrace their footsteps back down to the Neltner or wait at the col itself if preferred (and if it s not too cold!). To reach the summit there are short some sections that require hands on scrambling up rocky terrain after which it becomes more of a steady ascent up a snow covered scree slope to reach what you
probably thought was the summit. It isn t, it was one of those annoying false summits. To reach the summit there s a little more steady ascent over a ridge. The return is via the same route, although if there s enough snow we may be able to avoid the scrambling section and head down a steep gully instead. Walking time approx 7-9 hrs, approx 900m ascent Day 5 A steep ascent from the hut begins almost immediately as we begin our climb to the summit of Toubkal. The amount of snow will determine our progress. When there s no snow at all during the summer months, it s a seemingly relentless slog up a scree and boulder strewn cwm. If there s a lot of packed snow covering the scree, in some ways it s actually a little easier, a light covering of snow a little harder. Anyway, it s steeply up for around 2hours until the going eases a little as you enter a high corrie. You then follow an easy angled snow slope to reach a ridge line, where there is sharp drop off eastwards. Following the ridgeline the summit, with it s distinctive metal tripod is now not far away. Hopefully you ll get those views that Toubkal is renowned for and to remember for the rest of your life. From the hut, the summit is reached after 4-hrs ascent. The descent can be as short as 2 hours, maybe 3hours at most usually and is by the same route, in the opposite direction of course. Walking time approx 6-9hrs, with approx 1000m of ascent and 1000m descent. Neltner Refuge, Toubkal Base Camp Day 6 Leaving the Neltner Refuge behind, we return to Imlil in around 3hrs30mins of walking-all descent (around 1200m). From here we are quickly (approx 90mins) whisked out of the mountains by road and to Marrakech. Arriving mid to late afternoon there should be plenty of time to go souvenir hunting in the souks and in the evening witness the daily spectacle of the Djeema El Fna. Hotel, Marrakech Day 7 Depart Marrakech at your leisure. Airport transfers from central Marrakech back to Menara International Airport are not provided and by far the easiest and most cost effective way to get to the airport is to take a taxi. Journey time approx 15 mins.
Practical Information Joining Arrangements and Transfers The joining point for this trip is the group hotel in Marrakech. You should join this trip in Marrakech on Day 1 of the trip itinerary at the group hotel, Marrakech in time for the 2000hrs pre-trek briefing. Most clients will fly to Marrakech Airport. Airport transfers are not included for arrival and departure and you should make your own way to the hotel. Taxi is the best way for both arrival and departure and the min journey costs around 8. International Travel Marrakech International Airport (Menara) is the nearest airport. For total flexibility and choice, the price of our holidays often excludes flights. However, as an ATOL bonded agent we are able to arrange competitively priced tickets with the majority of international airlines. Where low cost airlines offer a better option, we are also able to arrange these, subject to a small booking fee. Only by arranging your flights with us can we offer you the peace of mind and 100% financial protection that booking with a licensed tour operator brings. Contact us to discuss your flight options for this holiday. If you would prefer to make your own International travel arrangements you can book this holiday as Land Only. You should book flights that enable you to arrive in Marrakech and the group hotel NO LATER than the early evening Day 1 in time for the 2000hrs pre-trek briefing. Return flights should be booked to depart Marrakech no sooner than the morning of Day 7. Please note if you are booking Land Only it is your sole responsibility to ensure you arrive at the joining point for the contracted arrangements in good time before these commence. No refunds will be provided in respect of any unused services contracted as a result. Similarly our contractual obligations cease at the end of your contracted arrangements. IMPORTANT- MAKE SURE YOUR CHOSEN HOLIDAY IS GUARANTEED TO RUN BEFORE YOU PURCHASE AIR TICKETS AND MAKING ANY OTHER TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS. Baggage Your main baggage will be transported by mule during the trekking element of this holiday. SUITCASES MUST NOT BE USED for your main baggage and will be refused porterage. Please ensure your main baggage is packed in either a soft holdall style kitbag, or a large, unframed rucksack. Contact us if you are unsure about the suitability of your main baggage Passports and Visas British passport holders (and other EU passport holders and US citizens) do not require a visa to visit Morocco for stays up to three months (please ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity). Accommodation Nights in Marrakech will be on a twin-share basis (unless you have requested a single room at additional cost) at the group hotel. Our group hotel is a Moroccan 3* hotel (all rooms en-suite) with small swimming pool located in the Hivernage district. The main walls of the Medina are literally a 5 minute walk away (turn right out of the hotel) and the Djeema El Fna around 15 mins walk (turn right out of hotel, cross the roundabout and follow the signs leading down Avenue Mohammed V). Also within 5 mins walk from the group hotel are several licensed cafes and restaurants and a large Carrefour supermarket. Whilst on trek, the accommodation is in small dorm or large dorm gites and mountain refuges. Single and private accommodation is not available whilst on trek. Accommodation on trek is quite basic with simple washing facilities, shared toilets. The Neltner Refuge is a basic mountain hut operated by CAF (The French Alpine Club), although it does have flushing toilets (if the water isn t frozen) and showers. Food Moroccan food is excellent. Very tasty fresh produce, with the addition of fragrant herbs and subtle spices are used to produce innumerable tagines (stews) and couscous. The fresh fruit is delicious, and so are Moroccan cakes and pastries. On the trek you will be mostly eating food purchased in Marrakech. Tagine is of course often served as an evening meal (made from either chicken or lamb), but everywhere seems to make their tagine differently and of course thinks their version is the best! Sardines are ubiquitous and form an important basis for
lunches and are vastly superior to what is available in UK supermarkets! There are plenty of streams, springs and wells where drinking water is available. Purify all your water, unless it is being boiled to make a brew of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Bottled mineral water is readily available for purchase at virtually all of the overnight halts. Soft fizzy drinks seem to appear (at a price) in the most unlikely of places. Although alcohol is now available in Marrakech the culture and religion of the mountain areas discourage its use and this is a policy that we respectfully request you adhere to. Climate It is of course impossible to predict the precise weather conditions you will encounter during the course of your holiday. We have been operating in Morocco for many, many years now and recently have noticed a shift in the usually predictable snow patterns, with some increasingly heavy snowfall in the late season and sometimes little or no snow fall in the earlier seasons, or arriving later than what was normal. Mountains are of course notorious for creating their own weather conditions and the High Atlas is no exception. Storms can occur at any time of year and in winter may also result in heavy snowfall and icy conditions. Toubkal is also notorious for high winds, that in snow can create additional challenges or be sufficiently strong to abandon an ascent. Temperatures will vary considerably according to season and dramatic falls in temperature cannot be ruled out. As a general rule it s usually mild/warm in Marrakech during the winter months around 15C-18C sometimes reaching the low 20 s. In the mountains it will be much, much colder. At the Neltner Refuge daytime temperatures may not reach more than 10C at best and will usually fall below freezing at night time. Roughly speaking temperatures decrease by approx. 1ºC for every 200 metre increase in altitude and so day time sub-zero temperatures are likely on Toubkal and Ouanoukrim. It is essential you are properly equipped for this trip. It is important that you appreciate that snow and ice conditions will also dictate whether either or both ascents can be made. Your experienced guide s decision on suitability is final. For further climate statistics visit about. Most people adapt to altitude quite well and there is plenty of oxygen even at the highest point of this trip. But, you should take care to allow yourself to acclimatise. You can do this by ensuring you drink between 3 and 6 litres of liquid each day, and walk at a pace slower than you perhaps usually would, especially at the outset and when ascending. We are always happy to give further advice on altitude related concerns. Local transport All transfers are by private vehicles. Cultural Considerations Whilst in Marrakech an anything goes attitude is beginning to develop to some extent, although unnecessary exposure of bare flesh (especially women), tight clothing etc is still likely to lead to unwanted attention. However in the Atlas Mountains, the Berber people are much more conservative. You will of course encounter trekkers whom you will notice dressed in a contradictory manner to our advice (and in winter may also actually be very cold too as a result!). The Berbers being such a polite people will usually not chastise such inappropriate manners of dress, but all the same be assured they do find it offensive and disrespectful. You will enjoy and experience much more interaction with the Berber people by dressing appropriately. Vaccinations and medical precautions We always recommend visiting your doctor and dentist for a check up before travelling. Your doctor will also have access to the most up to date information on vaccinations and medical precautions for the country you are about to visit. You should not drink the tap water in Morocco. A useful travel health online resource is First Aid You should always carry your own small, personal first aid kit. This should consist of the following: A general anti-biotic, throat lozenges, painkillers, plasters (band-aids), blister treatment, insect repellent (DEET), rehydration salts, antiseptic cream, diarrhoea treatment (e.g. Imodium). Altitude This trek involves going to reasonably high altitudes, but is not something to be worried
Currency. The Moroccan unit of currency is the Dirham (Dh). Please refer to for up to date rates. When changing your money, ensure that you keep your receipt, which will enable you to exchange up to half the amount of Dirhams you have received back into foreign currency when you leave the country. You will need to change all the money that you will need for the trek at the start in Marrakech, as there are no exchange facilities on the trek. ATM machines are widely available in Marrakech. There is an ATM machine and bureau exchange at the airport but the queues are usually very long. Turn left out of the group hotel and 5 minutes walk there is an ATM on the opposite side of the road. Language The official language of Morocco is Moroccan Arabic. There are also three separate Berber languages, one of which is Tashalhait and is the traditional language of High Atlas and Sous Valley Berbers. French is widely spoken, but only few Berbers speak English. A phrase book would be useful and fun! Inclusions Meals as listed in the outline itinerary All accommodation Guide, cook, muleteers whilst on trek Land transfers within the itinerary. Exclusions Drinks Souvenirs and personal items Insurance Meals not indicated above International flights Ice Axe and Crampon rental Airport transfers (allow 8 each for taxi) Tips (allow approx 50) or us- sales@walksworldwide.com for a quotation. Tipping Tipping is customary in Morocco. The Berber staff and muleteers in the mountains do expect a tip at the end of the trek. We will send you detailed tipping guidelines prior to your departure. Please remember that all tips should be a way for individuals to thank staff for good service. Maps Toubkal & Marrakech by Orientazion 1:50,000, Hiking Map is the most useful map available for this trip as it contains the entire trekking route. We recommend Stanfords at Long Acre, London WC2E 9LP (Tel: ) Travel Insurance It is a condition of booking any of our holidays that you have comprehensive travel insurance. It is your to responsibility to ensure you are covered for medical and personal accident risks for the part of the world you intend to travel and the activities involved. This cover should include repatriation costs, air ambulance and helicopter rescue. It is also advisable to take out cancellation insurance as all deposits paid are non-refundable. You may arrange either single-trip or annual multi-trip travel insurance through Walks Worldwide. Please call us on
