6 1-888-GOGEBIC ( ) Page 6 Old Boats and Getting About By Wilbur Hurst *Take a step back in time on Lake Gogebic while reading one of Wilbur Hurst s memoirs of his families early days staying on the lake. Wilbur s stories are one of the jems I look forward to publishing each year. These are important memories to commit to paper to pass on to new generations enjoying this beautiful lake. In the summers of the 1940 s and 50 s, at times when sitting on our dock at the Heathcock camp on the west shore of the north end of the lake, we could watch as John the Tailor took his vintage launch out of his boat house for a spin on Lake Gogebic. We never knew its age, but it had all the appearances of the launches made in the 1910 to 1920 era. In contrast to today s boats, made to ride on top of the water and go fast, these launches were made to ride through the water, with a rather sharp prow to break the waves, had an inboard motor, and a propeller shaft that went through the stern or the bottom of the hull. We never saw it go faster than 10 to 15 miles per hour. Stately and serene as it glided across the water, it forever gave you an indelible sense and memory that this was of a different time, never to be fully experienced again. It was for us the last of the old time boats that went about the lake. The boathouse in which it was kept was one of three on the north end of the lake which at that time still withstood the onslaughts of the winter ice break-up. With the demise of the boathouse and launch a chapter was closed as it marked, for us, the last old-time launch. Picnicing on the shores of Lake Superior A faster boat we often watched for at that time was the speedboat owned by the Ketolas. It was also kept in a large metal boathouse jutting into the lake and not far from our property. This boat had an outboard engine with two large cylinders. It was by far the fastest boat on our part of the lake at that time. The exhaust noise from the engine was recognizable for several hundred feet. Sometime roughly around 1910 my grandfather John L. Heathcock, paymaster for a string of iron mines around Ironwood, MI, acquired a steel-hulled launch that he initially kept on Sunday Lake in Wakefield. The launch had a one-cylinder gasoline engine made by the Detroit Engine Works in Detroit that was mounted mid-ship.** My mother, about 8 at the time, had great memories of being allowed to start the engine, which was done by grabbing the exposed fly wheel and giving it a spin. Getting to the family camp at Lake Gogebic in the early days required taking the train to the north end of the lake, and then walking the shore line and/or rowing a small row boat kept on the bank of the Merriweather River. The camp featured a platform tent equipped with bunks and a kerosene stove. By 1915 or so, the decision was made to move the launch to Lake Gogebic to enable getting around the lake on the water and to make possible getting to Bergland to obtain camp supplies. The launch was brought down on a railroad flat car and unloaded at Korlock, the whistle-stop station at the north end of the lake. When the Heathcock family was present the launch was initially anchored in front of the family camp at night. It was not long before construction of a boat house to store the launch was begun. Needed lumber was acquired in Bergland. Lake Gogebic Times On one memorable return trip, the launch was heavily loaded with lumber, as well as food and camp supplies, when the wind and waves picked up, swamping the boat. The flotation tanks in the launch, and probably the lumber as well, kept it from sinking. One of my aunts remembers swimming after a loaf of bread (wrapped in cellophane) to retrieve it unharmed as it was swept away by the waves. Most of the food was saved, the boat was pushed to shallow water and bailed out, and the return to camp continued. All went well getting to camp and for a while afterward. However, when my grandmother filled the stove from the kerosene can the stove promptly stopped working. She was quite disturbed until my grandfather figured out that the top part of the kerosene can was now filled with pure water - a result of the swamping. Water was decanted, the stove re-filled and lit, and dinner proceeded. With the finished boat house, not only was the launch now kept up out of the water when at camp, but also at times the boat house provided a place to sleep in the late fall when the tent was no longer up. Model-T Fords started to become popular while development along the lake front continued. But access to the camp was limited. With my grandfather s Model-T, getting to the lake from the Wakefield and the Ironwood area could be done by either M-28 or US-2. M-64 did not exist then, so if the boat was left anchored on the Merriweather River and the car was parked by the river, they could take the boat down the lake to camp. This was much easier than crossing the rickety bridge over the Merriweather River and hiking along the lake shore, particularly if one was carrying luggage or provisions. Roads giving access to Lake Gogebic from the Ironwood area were limited. US-2 was a much better road for a while, with M-28 being much rougher, often unpredictable and sometimes impassible even for a Model-T. But using US-2 meant that the boat needed to be kept on the Slate River at the south end of the lake. I am not sure if the word marina existed at the time, but the Heathcocks always talked about the boat livery that was on the Slate River***at the south end of Lake Gogebic. This was run by a fellow who went by the name of Gasoline Bill. Gasoline Bill was a rough fellow, ornery, drank a lot, and my grandfather was never sure about him. Nevertheless, he was trusted for looking after the launch. But on one trip to camp, as the family got into the launch at the livery, for some reason my grandfather had a strange feeling that he later could never explain. He looked about the launch and everything seemed alright, but then he thought that just to be sure he would inspect the engine cylinder. Upon removing the spark plug, visible on top of the piston was a very large nail that someone had dropped in there. Starting the motor would have ruined the motor. The nail was fished out, the spark plug replaced, and they continued on to camp. They never knew who was responsible for the attempt to sabotage the launch. The downside to using US 2 for access to the Heathcock camp was the long boat trip to and from the camp from the south end of the lake. On one Sunday as they started back from camp on a very stormy day, as they reached Bingham Bay the waves were so large that again my grandfather was concerned about swamping the launch. So they turned around and returned to camp to wait out the storm until Monday. The Heathcocks had the launch into the very late 1910 s or early 1920 s.. Eventually, there was one fellow who would unofficially look after the boats kept on the Merriweather River for a small fee. My grandfather would beach the boat on the sand where the Hoop and Holler Bar now is located, and this fellow would take the launch around into the river and anchor it there. However, on one November weekend he fastened it with too short an anchor rope and a very strong northeaster storm put large waves into the river, swamping the boat, washing out the floatation tanks, and putting a very large tear in the metal bottom of the launch. That was the end of the launch. They decided to retrieve only the Detroit engine, which could be sold back to the factory. It was a cold, windy day, and the water was November-cold. Nevertheless my grandfather was getting ready to dive into the water when a friend of his stepped up and insisted on doing the retrieval. He took a very large swig of bourbon, then started multiple dives under the water to unbolt and eventually retrieve the engine. The hull has never been seen since the engine retrieval was finished. After the loss of the launch, the Heathcocks looked for one not quite so fancy. The solution was a Thompson lap-strake wooden row-boat, fitted with a /2 horsepower Johnson outboard engine. My older brother now has this engine in California, where he expects to finish the rebuild on the engine started by our grandfather many years ago. The lap-strake rowboat was the family boat into By the 1940 s it was leaking copiously. Each year all seams were sealed with roofing tar, then the boat was totally sunk in the lake for at least three days to swell the wood up in hopes of sealing the leaks. In any event, we were sure a hand-operated water pump was handy to periodically bail out the water that leaked as you traveled, since fixing the seams was never perfect. The boat was green, so with the boat turned upside down the black roofing tar seams on each strake made it look like a watermelon. The family name for the boat was the MRL, for the three sisters Marion, Ruth and Letha (in order of birth!). In the 1940 s, my older brother and grandfather overhauled the ignition and fuel systems on the gasoline-powered engine every year to keep it working. I remember the muffler, the original long ago rusted out, which was made from two larger diameter and two smaller diameter empty soup cans with ends removed, each pair placed end-to-end between the engine discharge ports right under the engine fuel tank. The engine was started by adjusting the spark timing, opening the fuel line, priming the engine by tapping on a float needle extending out from the carburetor, adjusting the timing on the spark by placing a lever in the proper position, wrapping a rope around a pulley bolted on the top of the flywheel on top and giving it a pull. This process was repeated until successful, at which time the spark timing and carburetor (fuel) settings were adjusted for steady running. In the 1920 time period, with the launch gone and with construction of a private road south from M-28 that went just behind all of the cottages, building material and carpenters could more easily get to the Heathcock property. That private road was later paralleled by M-64, which generally is farther from the lake shore and runs all the way down to connect M-28 to US-2. The private road simplified the construction of the cabin that now sits on the Heathcock property. The boat house was first pulled up on land by a team of horses and turned 90 degrees. Then it was discovered that my grandfather s property was just a little north of where it had been described to him, and the cabin was moved again, this The Launch The camp and the tent on Lake Gogebic time using a Model T Ford for the tractor. It was also too small to be convenient, so the roof was separated at the peak and a wider floor installed. Then the rafters were sistered by additional 2x4 nailed to the original roof stringers to provide the necessary length for the higher roof. (Construction like this would never be tolerated today, but the denser 2x4 s cut from virgin timber have stood the test of time.) That structure now forms the center part of the cabin. The area of the wall that provided access to the lake for the launch is clearly visible today, although it no longer faces the lake or is open as a door. As time has gone on the cabin has acquired a larger lake-facing main room and an extensive porch wrapped around a lot of it, but the basic structure remains in active use, and is a favorite family gathering-place. Rev. T.J. Joslin, pastor of the Methodist Church **See That site quotes from a book named Motormen & Yachting by author Michael M. Dixon: The marine gas engine business may not be recognized as a great industry when compared to the automobile. However, as late as 1910, Gas Engine magazine observed that while much attention was being given to impressive numbers of automobiles being produced, the largely invisible gasoline marine engine still out numbered automobile engines in use by a factor of two to one. It was the impressive number of marine gas engines that prepared a generation of mechanics to establish Detroit s automobile industry. (My mother was always quite enamored of the fact that the launch had a Detroit engine). ***The dictionary defi nes livery as a place (livery stable) that keeps horses and vehicles for hire. My father, growing up in the lower peninsula on a farm outside of town, rode a horse daily to school with his younger sister holding on behind him. At school he would drop his sister off and take the horse to the livery in town for keeping during school. On rainy days he hitched a surrey to the horse, thereby having a roof to keep themselves dry.

9 Lake Gogebic Times Waterfall Country GOGEBIC ( ) Page 9 Scott Michelli at Slate River Falls in early spring The Ottawa National Forest is known as Waterfall Country. There are trails to many of Ottawa s waterfalls while others require map and compass to view. Waterfalls are beautiful in all seasons. The ice formations created in winter are spectacular while the flora and fauna during the summer add special touches. The greater flow of water in spring after snowmelt, and in the fall after a rainy period, makes the falls themselves most impressive. The following list is a sample to help you get started on enjoying Waterfall Country. 1. Sturgeon Falls Access is off Forest Road 2270, on the east edge of the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness. A new trail has been developed to correct some erosion problems, and winds down into the Gorge and along the river. This is a beautiful area where you might experience the song of a Hermit Thrush or see shade tolerant wildflowers on the forest floor. This is a moderately difficult trail due mainly to its length and changes in grade. 2. Duppy Falls Access is off Forest Highway 16, just south of the Iron-Houghton county line, via a short unmarked road to the west. This is the site of an old state quarry, and the trail to the river has been created by people going trout fishing. Follow that unmarked trail toward the west, and walk upstream to the falls when you reach the river. In the open field at edge of the old quarry, deer can often be seen and the sun loving wildflowers of open areas are common. 3. Jumbo Falls Access is west of Kenton, head south on the Golden Glow Road, along Forest Road 4580 to the forest crossroads, then go east (left) about 1/2 mile. Keep right passing the gravel pit until the road ends. From there you will find a trail to your left that takes you to the falls. This trail passes through some old growth hemlock, and is quite level. It is a scenic woods trail, and the water of the Jumbo River is crystal clear. 4. Meximine Falls Access is northeast of Watersmeet via Old US Highway 2 to Forest Road 4500 to the Burned Dam Forest Service campground. From this small campground you will be able to hear the falls, and a well-used trail takes you a very short distance to view them. 5. Bond Falls Access is east of Highway 45 from Paulding on Bond Falls Road. This well marked parking area and trail leads you down and around one of the most popular Upper Peninsula waterfalls. Managed by the U.P. Power Company, a developed trail is maintained with steps and bridges across the river at the base of the falls. This is one fall that is beautiful yearlong, and a variety of plants can be viewed throughout the summer. 6. Agate Falls Access is from Highway 28 through the roadside park just to the south of the falls. You will find a trail leading under the road and down to the falls. This trail is not developed with steps like Bond Falls trail, so it can get slippery after a rain. It is not long, but is moderately difficult in grade. Just over the falls you will see an old railroad trestle, which adds historic interest. Jutson Falls on the Slate River 11. Cascade Falls Access is off County Road 400, north of Highway 28. Follow the signs to a parking area at the trailhead. There are two trails that will lead you to/from the falls. The main trail is the easiest, with only moderate changes in elevation. The Bluff Trail leaves and rejoins the main trail and can be quite challenging but will provide you with some outstanding vistas. The main trail is moderately difficult due to its length and some ups and downs. This waterfall is well named as it Cascades over the rocks. 12. Yondota Falls Access is from County Road 523, north of Highway 2. You will come to a parking lot right near the bridge that crosses the river. The main trail is down the north side of the river, but you can hike down either side. This is a series of falls, so be sure you walk far enough to see them all. The trail is not long, but does drop in elevation along the river, so the uphill return hike may make this a moderately difficult trail. 13. Presque Isle Falls There are several falls on the Presque Isle River, and those most visited are within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park at the east entrance. Follow County Road 519 to a parking lot near a short trail to view Manabezho Falls, very near the mouth of the river where it empties into Lake Superior. 14. Black River Falls There are many falls on the Black River, including 5 major falls, as it drops in elevation through the rock before it empties into Lake Superior at Black River Harbor. Access is via County Road 513, also called the Black River Road. You will find a newly developed accessible trail to some of these falls, and other developed trails (with steps) to some of the others. The North Country Hiking Trail will allow you to view most of the major falls. The degree of difficulty varies here, with some falls being easy to access, with others more difficult. Ottawa National Forest information is available in large print upon request from the Forest Supervisor s Office in Ironwood, Michigan. (906) , TTY (906) O Kun-de-Kun Falls Access is from a parking lot along Highway 45 that provides entrance to the North Country Hiking Trail. Hike to the east a little over 1 mile through aspen and young mixed hardwoods over gently rolling terrain. The trail can be muddy after a rain. You may see deer along this trail, and also bear! More likely you will see frogs and squirrels and dragon flies. This is moderately difficult due to the distance. 8. Ajibikoka Falls Access is by following Forest Road 5120 along the west side of Brush Lake for about a half mile and then taking a compass reading and hiking to the north-east. It is not particularly difficult terrain, but you should have a good map and compass. This is quite a long fall, about 40 feet, and the area surrounding it contains quartz outcroppings. This is moderately difficult due to the distance and the orienteering skills needed. 10. Kakabika Falls Access is north of Highway 2 along County Road 527. There is a small parking area and a short trail to the falls. This falls is actually a series of S turns as the river drops in elevation. The trail is not long and not too difficult and there is some good berry picking near here as well as a spot to fish.

10 1-888-GOGEBIC ( ) Page 10 Lake Gogebic Times Ottawa National Forest Hiking Trails By Wilds of Michigan BESSEMER RANGER DISTRICT Conglomerate Falls: The hiking trail drops steadily as you near the river. At the falls, the river separates into two sections, falling 40 feet around an island of conglomerate rock, which gives the falls its name. Length: 3/4 mile. Skill Type: Easy to strenuous. Potawatomi/Gorge Falls: An asphalt surface trail connects the parking area at Gorge Falls to the viewing platform overlooking Potawatomi Falls. The trail, restroom and viewing platform at Potawatomi are fully accessible, providing a unique opportunity to view one of our areas most beautiful waterfalls. Skill Type: Easy to strenuous. Portions of North Country Trail: The Black River Segment on the Bessemer Ranger District parallels the Black River for five miles with its scenic rapids and waterfalls from just north of Copper Peak to beautiful Black River Harbor on Lake Superior. From here it crosses the footbridge at the mouth of the Black River, then turns south and again parallels the river to a point just upstream of Rainbow Falls. It then turns eastward for five miles to Gogebic County Road 519. The trail runs north on this road into the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness Location: 12 miles north of US-2 on County Road 513. Rainbow: The 1/2-mile hiking trail will take you from a paved parking lot to a stairway dropping down to an observation platform overlooking the scenic Rainbow Falls. With the right angle of sunlight, it produces a rainbow effect that gives the falls its name. Length: 1/2 mile Sandstone Falls: A 1/4-mile hiking trail will take you from a paved parking lot down a series of steps to the falls. The trail is short, but there is a steep series of steps. Not a large falls, but has varied rock formations and hollows carved out of sandstone and conglomerate rock by stream erosion. Length: 1/4 mile. Wolf Mountain Hike: This is a beautiful, gradual hike through lush northern hardwood foliage. It s rather steep as you near the end, but worth the climb: a breathtaking view awaits you at the top. Location: Off US Hwy 2 at the end of FS Road 9300, approximately 18 miles east of Ironwood. Skill type: Easy to strenuous. ONTONAGON DISTRICT Beaver Lodge Interpretive Trail: Length: 1-1/4 miles long. Skill type: Easy to small inclines. Location: Accessed north of Kenton on Forest Road 1470, then take 1478 to Bob Lake Campground. Cascade Falls Trail: This trail offers two alternative routes to reach a small waterfall on Cascade Creek. The scenic Twin Peaks route climbs a bluff overlooking the West Branch of the Ontonagon River and the Trap Hills. The valley route avoids the steep path of the higher route but reaches the same destination. Length: One mile. Location: 7 miles northeast of Bergland on Forest Road 400 to the junction with FR 468. The two routes depart from the parking lot. Circle of Life Trail: Length: Takes one hour to hike. Skill type: Easy- Intermediate level. Location: Accessed about 6 miles east of Mass City off M-38 on Forest Road 1960 at Courtney Lake Campground. It starts across from the day use parking area and ends at campsite 7. O Kun De Kun Trail: Length: 45 minutes to hike. Skill type: Easy. Location: Halfway between Rockland, MI and Bruce Crossing off of US 45. WATERSMEET RANGER DISTRICT Imp Lake Trail: It is a nice trail and wheelchair accessible. Part of the trail is boardwalk and at the half-way point, there is decking with wooden chairs. It is particularly pretty with fall colors. Length: 1 mile loop trail. Skill type: Easy. Location: Entrance is at the Imp Lake Campground which can be accessed east of US 2 on FR 3940 to FR Kakabika Water Falls: Skill type: Difficult. Location: Approximately 1/4-mile off of County Rd. 527, approximately 13 miles west of Watersmeet on US2. Meximinee Trail: Length: 1/4 mile. Skill Type: Easy. Location: Trail is found at Burned Dam Campgrounds, approximately seven miles northeast of Watersmeet. Visitor Center Interpretive Trail: Length: 10 minutes long. 11 Lake Gogebic Times GOGEBIC ( ) Page 11 Summer 2015: A Productive Year at the Ontonagon River Streamside Rearing Trailer This past summer proved to be productive for the Ashland Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (Ashland FWCO) in regards to the Streamside Rearing Trailer (SRT) on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River, Ontonagon County, Michigan. Located at the outlet of Lake Gogebic near Bergland, this was the third year the SRT was in place. Unlike the previous two years, when large volumes of spring run-off made egg collection on the nearby Sturgeon River near impossible, conditions in 2015 were favorable for egg collection. In two days, biologists from Michigan DNR, Ashland FWCO, Ottawa National Forest and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians (FDL) were able to collect eggs from 8 females and milt from 32 males. Following genetic guidelines for rearing and stocking sturgeon in the Great Lakes basin ( Pubs/ pdf), eggs and milt from lake sturgeon in the Sturgeon River were collected and combined to form 32 families. The fertilized eggs from each female are transported to the Ontonagon River SRT and placed into their own hatching jar. Ontonagon River water flows through the jars to gently tumble the eggs. The eggs and fish will imprint to this river water and seek to return to the Ontonagon River in the future. After a week the eggs hatch into tiny tadpole like sturgeon fry and shortly thereafter minilake sturgeon can be seen swimming in the tanks that will be their home for the next 4 months. During the early days of life, the baby sturgeons are fed brine shrimp raised at the SRT. In 3-4 weeks, they reach about two inches in length and biologists begin to add shaved bloodworms for feed along with the brine shrimp. Eventually, the young sturgeons are converted to an all bloodworm diet. During years like 2015, when eggs are plentiful and hatch rate is high, the number of fry and then fingerlings need to be thinned out to allow maximum growth in the tanks. On June 4, about 8,500 fry were provided to FDL for release into the upper St Louis River by Brookston, Minnesota. This release is part of an ongoing restoration project to reintroduce sturgeon in this area. By July 14th, the fingerlings were 3-4 inches long and another 1,500 were provided to FDL. After the final thinning, the remaining fingerlings are reared in the SRT until they are large enough to be marked internally with a tag the size of a grain of rice. These, Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags have a unique identifier code which will allow for future study on the growth, movement, and survival of the stocked fish. This year, when stocking time approached, fish biologists from Ashland FWCO and ONF tagged 819 sturgeons composed of fish from each of the 32 families founded in May. On August 24th the SRT rearing season came to a close when the 7-9 long fingerlings were released at two different locations on the main stem of the Ontonagon River to help restore a genetically diverse lake sturgeon population in the Ontonagon River system. The successful partnership among Tribal, State and Federal agencies and the Upper Peninsula Power Company is committed to a restoration effort on the Ontonagon River scheduled to last years. Over this time period eggs from up to 200 females could contribute to restore a healthy lake sturgeon population in the Ontonagon River. Stay tuned for more! Visitors are welcome to stop by the Ontonagon River SRT to see the fish, learn more John JP Pagel, fi shery technician with the Ottawa National Forest, Henry Quinaln, Assistant Project Leader at USFWS Ashland Fish and Wildlife Conservation Offi ce and Dr. Ed Baker, Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources Research Division, Marquette, MI, releasing sturgeon at Military Hill Wayside. about lake sturgeon and the fish rearing process, and learn more about the Ontonagon River lake sturgeon restoration project. Please be aware that the entire process of collecting, fertilizing, and hatching sturgeon eggs and raising baby sturgeon has pitfalls and there may be some years when the Ontonagon River SRT is not operational. Arranged tours can also take place for larger groups by calling Glenn Miller at (715) extension 114. Sturgeon Fingerling just before release. Lake Sturgeon Fry, approximately 8 days old. 13 Lake Gogebic Times Keeping Invasives at Bay Lake Gogebic has been a proud participant of the Clean Boats, Clean Waters project for several years now. Sponsored by Lake Gogebic Improvement Association and Bergland Township, it has worked to reduce and prevent invasive species of all kinds from gaining access to the lake. We do have two that are inhabitants: the Spiney Water Flea and the Chinese Mystery Snail. We are working diligently to prevent others like Eurasian Water Milfoil,Zebra Mussels and more. Aquatic plants are also a concern and many residents have donated hours of time to eradicating Purple Loosestrife. A Landing Blitz Weekend was held at the 4th of July weekend where many boaters were contacted and given token reminders of what they can do to keep our lake free of these invaders. In August, a Kid s Fishing Clinic provided, by Walleyes for Tomorrow, gave us the opportunity to educate children and their families. The answer is really very simple. CLEAN YOUR BOAT and ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT before moving it to other waters. Never throw leftover bait in the lake (trash it) and drain your live well after leaving the water. CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY! And become aware of the threat. Many thanks to Stan and Pat Wontor for running the boat washer at the Bergland Dock and to Gene Kauranen for educating boaters at the E. Shore Landing. Ian Shackleford of the U.S. Forest Service is a great support to our project, as well as Kevin Walters from the Lansing DEQ who was a great source and provider, especially for our Landing Blitz. Also, great appreciation is owed to Wisconsin s Clean Boats Clean Waters program. Our neighbor to the south and east has been the best kind of neighbor that a community can have. We look forward to making a difference in You, too, can provide information to me if you become aware of an invasive on our lake. 17 1-888-GOGEBIC ( ) Page 18 Lake Gogebic Times Multi-use Trails in the Western Upper Peninsula By Don Helsel ORVs, Horses, Side-by-Sides, ATVs, Motorcycles, Kayaks or Canoes Do you ride any of these? If so, then Michigan Trails and Recreation Alliance of Land and the Environment (MI-TRALE) is the group for you, and the Lake Gogebic area is the place to visit! MI-TRALE was founded in June of 2001 to band together both motorized and nonmotorized trail enthusiasts who valued their environment and worked to carefully develop trail opportunities in the Western Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan for everyone to enjoy. We started with less than 100 miles of trails in the entirety of the Western UP, and due to dedicated club members diligently working in concert with the Ottawa National Forest (ONF), the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Private Land Owners, elected State and Local officials, and many others, we are now responsible for maintaining over 550 miles of trails! 300 miles of these trails are designated by the DNR, which provides supplemental support for material costs by which to maintain the trails; however MI-TRALE volunteers spend hundreds of hours and thousands of vehicle miles maintaining the 550 miles of trails at their own expense. All of these trails are accessible from the Lake Gogebic area. Trail guides can be purchased in local stores or online at In 2015 MI-TRALE was able to open a new trail with support of the Ottawa National Forest, the County of Ontonagon, and Gogebic, as well as private land owners. The trail is called the LL Multi-use ORV Route. MI-TRALE had the grand opening and dedication of this newly completed 26 mile LL trail on August 22nd, This new trail connects Land O Lakes, WI in the south to Bond Falls in the north. This trail allows Wisconsin riders to access the Western UP trail system which ranges from Marenisco in the west to Crystal Falls in the east. And, as far north as Copper Harbor in the Keweenaw. In the spring of 2016 this trail will be extended to connect Bond Falls to Bruce Crossing, not only providing access to additional services, but also to additional sections of MI-TRALE managed trails. In addition to the LL opening, MI-TRALE also opened the Phelps to Iron River (PI) trail. This trail runs from the Wisconsin Michigan border near the town of Phelps and connects to the Iron River - Marenisco (IM) Trail near Iron River. In 2015 the MI-TRALE equestrian members completed multiple rides on some of the MDNR multi-user trails as they scouted out additional good areas to ride. Work Lake Gogebic Fireflies The Lake Gogebic Fireflies is a womens auxiliary that raises money to support the Lake Gogebic Fire Department. Since 1982, the organization has been able to provide equipment for not only the Fire Department, but has also provided AEDs at the various resorts around the lake and continues to fund to maintain them. Most funds are raised through two annual fundraisers. The second Saturday in June is the All Lake Garage Sale. People come from near and far to tour the lake for bargains. There have been nearly 30 residences that participated. If you re looking for bargains or items you want, make continues with the Ottawa National Forest for improvements on the Courtney Equestrian Trails (just east of Mass City on M38), and with MDNR for a multi-user campground in that same area. Plans are for a public campground that includes amenities needed for the horse rider. We will be scouting out more horse trails in Please check out the MI-TRALE web site for event dates. Throughout the year, many outings/events are held to including several annual rides. This year MI-TRALE organized and supports the following rides: 5th Annual State Park Off Road Trek (SPORT) Ride on June 11, The ride details will be available on the MI- TRALE web site. ( ) 9th Annual Senior Fall Color Ride is scheduled for September 22, The ride details will be available on the MI-TRALE web site. 18 Lake Gogebic Times Lake Gogebic Area Water Trails Jim Waters on a Nelson Creek slough in a sea kayak in mid-july. 1. Slate River For paddling enthusiasts, the Lake Gogebic area boasts three water trails with family-friendly appeal, from placid water and short distance to Class II/II+ with longer distance. All three of the water trails offer wilderness flavor. First, let s talk about the Slate River, which flows into the head of Lake Gogebic, and is absolutely safe for even the least adventurous of paddlers. The final couple of miles of the Slate River show no current as you paddle through gorgeous wetlands. In fact, due to the lack of current, this is an outand-back water trail. Put in at the public boat ramp in Gogebic County Park on Icehouse Bay, right at the head of Lake Gogebic. Paddle up the Slate River (no current here), which takes you under the bridge on East Shore Road, and then on into a wetlands wilderness. Enjoy the convoluted wetlands, with side trips up Marshall Creek and Nelson Creek. There is a pond on Nelson Creek with crystal clear water and eerie green stuff growing below the surface. It looks like green cotton candy, ready to take over the world. Keep your eyes peeled for freshwater sponges, too. You may find some growing on submerged wood. Back on the Slate, you will encounter very light current as you proceed upstream, and the water will grow shallow. The brushy river banks are a jungle, chock full of poison ivy, but beautiful to the eye. Eventually you will reach a shallow riffle where the brushy lowlands meet upland hardwoods, and here is the turnaround point. If you had explored all the side trips in the broad wetlands, then by the time you get back to the boat ramp on Icehouse Bay, you will have paddled about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). 2. Presque Isle River The level of adventure will rise a notch if you paddle the Presque Isle River, which is west of Lake Gogebic. This water trail is Class I for the first 5.5 miles or so, at which point you will have to do a very short portage around a very old logjam. Below the logjam, you will find about 8 miles of flat water with light current. The lowlands are very pretty though, with stately silver maples on the banks. Put in at the old bridge over the Presque Isle River on the old Copps Mine Road, about 5 miles north of Highway US-2 from the community of Marenisco. The old bridge, now blocked to car traffic, is downstream from Yondota Falls. If you have time for a short hike to Yondota Falls on your drive to the put-in, it is very scenic. It s actually a series of falls. The 5.5 miles of Class I rapids will need more than summer flows to be runnable, so your best bet is to do this run in Spring or after big rainfalls. The rapids are just enough to be interesting, but not the least bit difficult. The scenery is very pleasant. Since the section from the logjam down to the take-out at Highway M-28 is totally flat water through lowlands, you would have the option of putting in at Highway M-28 even in summer, and then paddling upstream as far as you please for an out-and-back. If you went all the way up to the logjam and back, you d have 16 miles. Otherwise, from the old Copps Mine Bridge down to Highway M-28 is about 13.5 miles. You can also put in at the Highway M-28 Bridge and paddle downstream a couple miles and back, with a side trip up Mud Creek. Jim Waters on the Presque Isle River below Copps Mine Bridge in the month of May GOGEBIC ( ) Page 19 Below this section of flat water, the river radically changes character. In fact, the lower section from Underwood Tower Road to Lake Superior is Class IV/V, and includes several waterfalls. It is for aggressive, expert whitewater paddlers only. Some even run Manabezho Falls in the Presque Isle Unit of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, near the river mouth. Manabezho Falls is a significant drop. 3. West Branch of the Ontonagon River This river can be quite exciting for short sections, and varies between Class II and Class II+ depending on flow levels. This definitely qualifies as quite adventurous family paddling. There is a USGS stream Gage (check it online) at the Lake Gogebic Dam, which is managed by UP Power Company. Recommended minimum flow is 200 cfs. If it s up around 600 cfs, you will see some very fast water in places. In particular, the first half mile or so, from the put-in at the old bridge location a short distance downstream from the dam to the Highway M-28 Bridge is very fast water with no eddies, with one roaring wave that may qualify as easy Class III at higher flow levels. Otherwise, there are numerous Class II rapids dispersed throughout the first 11 or 12 miles to Cascade Creek, followed by 5 miles of flat water to the bridge on the Norwich Road at the Norwich Bluffs, which is your take-out. The terrain throughout is quite wild, with a couple nice views of rock bluffs. Other than a hunting camp or two, you will see no signs of civilization between bridges. This run is usually doable for several weeks in the spring, sometimes in the summer after big rains, and often in the fall after the rains come. If you have time after the 17-mile water trail, a tour of the Norwich Cemetery is highly recommended. The US Forest Service manages it, and has posted signage. The Norwich Bluffs themselves are substantial cliffs worth seeing in their own right. (Submitted by Dean Juntanen) Mountain Biking in the Western Upper Peninsula recognized as a International Mountain Bicycling Association Ride Center, is considered the hub of riding in the region, the mountain bike adventures however don t end there. Everywhere from Ironwood to Calumet and beyond are both established trail systems and more under development. Some of the favorite developed singletrack systems include Swedetown Trails in Calumet known for its flowy, family-friendly singletrack and the Michigan Tech Trails in Houghton where beginner-friendly trails, challenging technical features, flow trails, jump lines and more can be explored. Located at the very end of US41 on the Keweenaw Peninsula, the trail experience here has been described as magical due to the unique terrain, natural beauty, and small town atmosphere. With a trailhead located in the center of town, you can park your car for the day or week and head out on over 32 miles and growing network of trails that straddle the nearby hillsides and reaching out into over 8,000 acres of Michigan DNR lands. Shuttles to the system highpoints of Brockway Mountain Drive and the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge are also available for those that prefer to ride mostly downhill. 19 1-888-GOGEBIC ( ) Page 20 Remembering the Eagle s Nest Lake Gogebic lost something special in early June this year. Some say it was there for over forty years. East Shore residents were especially blessed since they were able to observe it on a daily commute. There was some years with no activity, but the last few were very active. The picture shown was taken in The nest was inhabited by two adults and most likely eaglets when the huge nest was brought down in a windstorm. After many years, the eye is still drawn to that tree after rounding a curve; a testament to nature and its beauty and loss. Fall is Fun in the Western U.P. Fall is not only fun, but one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit the Lake Gogebic area, Peak colors will normally begin the first week in September and stretch into the first two weeks of October. Visitors are always amazed at the vibrant variety of colors displayed by our mix of hardwood species and conifers to complete the canvas. The varied terrain provides a new view over every crest in the road. But yet there is so much more! Visitors by car, truck, and motorcycle only see a passing glimpse. Hikers both amateur and experienced can enjoy the tranquil trails leading to dozens of hidden waterfalls, scenic overlooks, Lake of the Clouds, or the Porcupine Mountains. Others may venture to the top of the famous Copper Peak Ski Flying hill, it will take your breath away. ATV enthusiast can ride from town to town and see the wilderness from a vantage point for both young and old while visiting the quaint U.P. pit stops. Have some food and drink along the way, or maybe one of our famous U.P. pasties! Others will proudly suit up in their blaze orange cap and vest to walk the endless supply of logging roads and trails in search of Ruffed Grouse while spending some quality time with their canine companions. Upper Peninsula Facts First of all, a little information about the name of the Upper Peninsula. The state of Michigan is comprised of two peninsulas, an upper and a lower peninsula. We are located in the Upper Peninsula. Residents of the Upper Peninsula call this land the U.P. (short for Upper Peninsula). Other names commonly referred to this area of the state is Northern Michigan, the U.P. Michiganand Upper Michigan. The Upper Peninsula is located in the Northern 1/3rd of Michigan. The state of Michigan has roughly a population of over 9 million, yet the U.P. only has 300,000 residents. The U.P. also comprises 1/3rd of the total land mass of the state of Michigan. A Peninsula is an area of land in which three of its sides are bordered by water. The U.P. is surrounded by Lake Superior to the north, Lake Michigan to the South, and Lake Huron to the east. The U.P. also is bordered to the west by our neighboring state of Wisconsin. Upper Peninsula residents are a hardy-breed of folk, who can endure 5 or more months of winter during a given year. If you hate the snow and the cold, then the U.P. is not the place for you. Residents of the U.P. are commonly referred to as Yoopers. Since the Upper and Lower Peninsula s are connected together by the Mackinac Bridge at the Straits of Mackinac, Lower Peninsula residents are referred to as trolls, but truly, nothing bad is meant by this. The Upper Peninsula s largest city is Marquette, located in the north central U.P. The population of Marquette is around 20,000 people. A few big employers reside in this city, including Marquette General Hospital as well as Northern Michigan University. The city also has a top-notch school system and has many Lake Gogebic Times Let s not forget the water. Boaters enjoy the view of the largest lake in the U.P. (Lake Gogebic) from boat or pontoon on a lazy fall day with the painted Gogebic Range as a backdrop. Fishermen get excited as the end of September nears as well. Water temperatures begin to sink along with the season, sparking some of the best walleye fishing of the year. Those chunky keeper size Walleye everyone wondered what happened to the past few months are now hitting the feed bag. Anglers are amazed at the percentage of their catch that is now in the frying pan! Bonus tip, shore anglers do very well at this time of year just casting from shore or docks. Great ideas, but left your trailer or toys at home? Many area businesses rent ATV s, snowmobiles, boats and pontoons to help enjoy the full spectrum. These business owners are a great source for suggestions, ideas, and directions to help you enjoy your time here in the Lake Gogebic area. So, instead of just passing thru on your annual fall color tour, stop and smell the treasures! Enjoy a hot cup of coffee while watching the steam rise from the lake on a cool fall morning and stimulate all of your senses at this most beautiful time of year! By Barry (Bear) Drews at Bear s Nine Pines Resort fun and exciting things to do on an average day. The next largest cities in the U.P. are Sault Ste. Marie in the eastern U.P., Houghton in the western U.P., and Escanaba in the south central U.P. The U.P. is home to a rich copper and iron ore mining heritage. Two large iron ore mines are located in central Marquette county, named the Empire and Tilden Mines, managed by Cleveland Cliffs Incorporated. Several million tons of iron ore pellets are made at these two mines and the pellets are shipped out of Marquette and Escanaba via large ore docks, onto large ore vessels that travel the Great Lakes. The pellets make their way to large steel factories and are made into products. Copper Mining in the U.P. has ended. A rich Copper Mining history remains in the Copper Country, where many mines were once located. Believe it or not, the town of Calumet once had 90,000 people living there because of the huge copper boom, and was once considered a candidate to be the Michigan state capital. The Upper Peninsula is home to only one Interstate highway. I-75 runs from North to South, beginning at Sault Ste. Marie and ending at St. Ignace and traveling across the Mackinac Bridge. The U.P. has two major east-west trunk lines: US 2 and M-28. Yet neither of these highways are four-lane freeways. The only freeways or expressways on these two highways are near major population centers. No other highways in the U.P. are considered to be freeways or expressways. The Upper Peninsula has some of the most beautiful natural territory in the United States. The U.P. is home to the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests. There are camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, and many other activities Winter Survival Secret Number One: Get out and go day sledding! By Matt Sturmer, DVM, Bruce Crossing Harness the dogs, hook them up to gangline, pull the snow hook and away you go! The only sounds are the sled runners slicing through the snow and the breath of 4 dogs as they bounce along the trail pulling you on your sled. We were on our way to the Lost Creek yurt in the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park. Two sleds loaded with camping gear, 8 dogs, and 2 mushers trying a new 3 day adventure. The first 7 miles was a sightseeing paradise as the groomed trail meandered through the forest. The last ½ mile to the Lost Creek yurt challenged dog team and musher as it was uphill through 2-3 feet of dense snow. Amazingly, the dogs just stuck to business and slowly pulled the heavy sleds this last ½ mile finishing with the usual tail wag and request for a good dog snack. We tucked the team into some fresh straw and spent our first day at camp. The second day saw us back on a trail through the woods filled with hills and sharp curves. It seems the dogs really enjoy this type of trail as they always run faster when approaching a curve. On the way back up a long sloping hill, the sound of a loud crack brought us to a stop. It was a large, snow filled tree limb breaking under the weight of the snow. The branch sent U.P. Forest Facts snow crystals floating through the air. The whole team seemed to be awed by this spectacle. Back at the yurt, the dogs received their evening meal of dry dog food, fat, and raw fish. It turns out that fat is their main fuel when pulling on the trail. On our last day, we arose in the dark, hooked up the teams, and ran on the trail by the light of our headlamps. About 5 miles into the run, daybreak began and the dogs seemed to sense this. Spontaneously, they all broke into a uniform run, a lope, and maintained this speed for the last few miles of the trip. It was an absolutely exhilarating way to finish up a grand winter camping adventure. Dog sledding opportunities abound in our area. There are sled dog outfitters in Bayfield, WI: Tapiola, MI; and McMillan, MI. Try it once and you ll get hooked. And most importantly, winter becomes a time of fun and excitement. The other way to enjoy dog sledding is to attend a dog sled race. The U.P. 200 in Marquette starts on February 11 and the Copper Dog 150 starts February 26 in Calumet. Both races run through the respective downtown areas giving spectators an incredible close-up look at racing dog teams. *Michigan has 36 million acres of land, of which 20 million acres are forested. This makes Michigan one of the most forested states in the country. Sixty percent of Michigan s forest land is owned by private individuals, but 40 percent is either publicly owned or open for public use. That is 8 million acres of forest land available to hunt, fish, explore, hike, bike and enjoy. In addition to having the largest state forest system in the country, Michigan is home to three national forests, three national parks, two large national wildlife refuges, 2 million acres of private forest land open to hunting and fishing under the DNR-administered Commercial Forest program, and the 60,000-acre Porcupine Mountains Wildness State Park (aka the Porkies ). - Forests cover 53% of Michigan and 83% of the U.P. - The U.P. has more timberland than 21 states. - The five most common Michigan tree species are sugar maple, red maple, quaking aspen, cedar and northern red oak. In the U.P., swap balsam fir for red oak. - Almost half the number of tree species in the U.P. forest are exotics. - The tallest recorded tree in Michigan is a 201-foot white pine in Marquette County. - If all the wood in Michigan were cut into cords and laid side by side, the pile would circle the Earth over 10 times. The wood in the U.P. would circle the Earth 4.5 times. - Over a half million acres of Michigan forest have been reserved. - Wood is by far the most environmentally friendly raw material to extract and process. Better yet, it is renewable. - And in recent years 2 of the State Capital Christmas trees came the Western U.P. - Bergland and just last December, Wakefield! *Michigan DNR available while visiting the national forests. The Ottawa National Forest is headquartered in Watersmeet, MI while the Hiawatha National Forest is headquartered in Munising. There are also over 15 state parks located across the U.P. territory. The most popular state parks include the Tahquamenon, Mackinac Island, Laughing Whitefish, Porcupine Mountains, and Van Riper State Parks. There are three national parks located peninsula wide. The Isle Royale National Park is located in far Northwest Lake Superior. An island ferry travels to the park everyday during summer months. It is a very isolated and heavily forested island, with a variety of wildlife, such as bear, wolves, and moose. The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in eastcentral Upper Michigan along the Lake Superior shoreline. The park stretches from Munising to Grand Marais in Alger County. The park is named for the beautiful sandstone rock cliffs that are exposed along the lakeshore. Pictured Rocks is also known as being home to America s first national lakeshore. Such amazing attractions within the parks boundaries include Miners Castle, Munising Falls, Miners Beach, and Sand Point. Last but not least, one of the newest National parks is the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The park has been developed to commemorate the rich copper mining history in the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Peninsula was home to the only place in the world where commercially abundant quantities of elemental copper occurred. The park is headquartered in Calumet, MI. Believe it or not, the U.P. also has over 100 waterfalls within its boundaries. There are many that are not on the state map, so a handy U.P. waterfalls manual may be needed to get to them all. Most of them are small falls, but the larger falls are the most impressive. Some of the larger falls include the Tahquamenon, Laughing Whitefish, Munising, and Wagner. The U.P. has many more falls than the Lower Peninsula, so if it s waterfall-hunting you wish to do, then the Upper Peninsula is the place to be. Another famous landmark in the Upper Peninsula is the Soo Locks near Sault Ste. Marie. The Soo Locks were built to accommodate large shipping vessels to travel the other Great Lakes while leaving or entering Lake Superior safely. The St. Mary s River is the only body of water that connects Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes. The locks are a much easier bypass for ships, especially when the other route is impassible because of large river rapids. Before the locks were constructed, boats had to be diverted around river rapids, and this meant carrying boats around the rapids. For the larger boats, cargo had to be taken off the one ship sitting below the rapids, and then carried to another boat sitting above the rapids in Lake Superior. The construction project started in 1853, and a lock connecting both sides was completed. Since then, other locks have been built to help alleviate demand. Four locks exist in the Soo, with two of the larger locks getting the most use. A third has been deemed obsolete and is no longer in use while the fourth only gets used to accommodate smaller vessels. A new construction project is being planned to restore the old and outdated locks. * up_mich/facts.html

20 Lake Gogebic Times EPA Revises Ethanol Standards The Environmental Protection Agency has issued revised energy guidelines that reduce targets set in a 2007 law for the amount of the biofuel that must be add to gasoline in the U.S. The EPA s latest round of ethanol mandates, known as the Renewable Fuel Standards, have been under fire by critics on all sides. Blending ethanol into gasoline was intended to help reduce emissions and cut American dependence on foreign fuel. The standards have run into fundamental problems, such as autos (including recreational vehicles) and gas stations were not equipped to handle fuel containing more than 10% ethanol - a problem commonly referred to as the blend wall The domestic energy boom in the U.S. has lessened the urgency of out dependence, while higher efficiency standards and stricter regulations have lowered consumption. It appears the future of the ethanol mandate will now play out in the courts rather then in Congress. Michigan Snowmobile Trail Maps Available From MSA For Your Garmin GPS. A state law signed in 2008 provided for the incremental increase in snowmobile fees which support mainte- nance and grooming of the state s snowmobile trail network. After the 2015/16 season the cost of living will then determine if there will be an increase. Any snowmobile using the designated snowmobile trails must have an attached trail permit. The sled must also have a state registration sticker attached. This season Wisconsin upped the nonresident annual fee to $ Ontario preseason purchase of a trail permit is $ Regular season fee is $ A 7 day pass is $ and a 3 day pass is $ Quebec has an annual fee of $360.00, 1 week is $200.00, 3 day is $120 and 1 day is $ So Michigan is a real bargain with over 6,000 miles of groomed trails. Perhaps your state has very few groomed trails or you don t get a decent snow cover to ride. Everyone in the snowmobile community knows that Michigan has the best trails especially here in the UP and the Western UP. Also I might add, at a very reasonable cost. The Michigan Snowmobile Association is the backbone of our snowmobiling program. True, the Michigan DNR holds the purse strings through our snowmobile grant program, but the MSA is your watchdog, keeping you informed, and promoting safe and responsible use. However, most importantly MSA defends your right to ride in Lansing, Washington and on the international level. It is a constant battle against those who would like motorized sports out of and off public land. It is extremely important to have support from all who ride in Michigan whether you live here or not. Noncompliance of the rules could damage Michigan s nationally recognized trail system because 50 percent of trails pass through private land. Enhanced efforts will focus on the DNRmanaged trail systems, high-use areas and areas where complaints are received. While on routine patrol, conservation officers also will conduct decibel-level testing of snowmobiles. The penalty for violating the sound levels for snowmobiles is a civil infraction, with fines up to $250. Conservation officers are stepping up decibel-level enforcement to ensure snowmobilers are in compliance with state law and acceptable noise levels, said Cpl. John Morey, who oversees the snowmobile safety and education program within the DNR Law Enforcement Division. In addition to the operator s legal ramifications of operating a loud snowmobile, this excessive noise has consequences that can affect other snowmobilers, including the loss of popular snowmobile trails. Morey noted that Michigan s vast snowmobile trail system is the result of partnerships with private landowners who, through annual permits between the landowners and snowmobile clubs, open portions of their land for snowmobile trails. Without this partnership, the expansive, interconnected trail system enjoyed by thousands of snowmobilers each year wouldn t exist, Morey said. When snowmobilers behave unethically or illegally, private land owners can and have opted out of signing another annual agreement, and the trail is closed. A reason for this includes excessive noise. If a snowmobile s exhaust or muffler requires service, the DNR recommends that the repair be done with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts for that specific snowmobile. Deviation from this repair recommendation, or modifying the exhaust or muffler, could result in the operator being in violation of state law. Under Michigan law, the muffler on a snowmobile must be in good working order and, when in constant operation, noise emission cannot exceed the following levels: For snowmobiles manufactured after July 1, 1977, and sold or offered for sale in Michigan, 78 decibels at 50 feet, as measured using the 2003 Society of Automotive Engineers standard J192. For a stationary snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1980, and sold or offered for sale in Michigan, 88 decibels at 13.1 feet, as measured using the 2004 Society of Automotive Engineers standard J2567. More than 6,200 miles of designated snowmobile trails are located throughout statemanaged forests, national forests and privately owned lands. 22 Lake Gogebic Times GOGEBIC ( ) Page 23 Ski flying will return to Copper Peak in 2017 Ski flying is returning to Copper Peak in Ironwood. Representatives of the Federation of International Skiing have awarded Copper Peak a Grand Prix Summer Series finale event to Who Grooms the Snowmobile Trails Around Lake Gogebic? In Michigan our snowmobile trail grooming is done primarily by snowmobile clubs. (There are a couple tourist councils and chambers also responsible for grooming over 6,200 miles of snowmobile trails.) The grooming entities (68 for the whole state) are funded via a grant through the state and administered by the MDNR. The snowmobile grant is funded from the Michigan trail permit, a very small percentage of the Michigan gas tax and some funds from the Michigan snowmobile registrations. There is no general fund money in our snowmobile grant fund. No other sport is funded entirely by the user. Grant grooming sponsors are volunteers. Gogebic Are Grooming has 151 miles all around Lake Gogebic with trails branching out from there to join the continuous trail system in every direction. It is an excellent area to make your riding headquarters. There is another article in this snowmobile section that will give you many riding options for all no matter your expertise. Our grooming operation is completed with 3 PistenBully groomers and various drags to be held in September 2017 and a Summer Continental Cup and a Nordic combined summer event, both to possibly take place in The September 2017 event is an annual address all the snow conditions. For the last several years the program has 100% funded the groomers and drags which cost about 220 thousand for a groomer and 22 thousand for a drag. Not hard to see where your permit dollars go. We have had mostly the same groomer drivers, mechanics and other volunteers who are dedicated and knowledgeable. Also keeping the same drivers on the same trails is a plus as they take pride in their trails. The grooming is done almost 24/7 as we often exceed 200 inches of snow. Expect to see a groomer at any time on the trail. The groomer has the right of way. Last year we groomed 17,552 miles in 2313 hours. Keeping the trails open and groomed is a year round job for grant sponsor volunteers. There are easements to keep current, brushing, signing, bridge and culverts maintenance/replacement. Bridges now have to be engineered to meet certain standards. Any new trail proposal must go through many stages and could take years to be approved. The paperwork is very detailed with many restrictions. All of this goes on so we can summertime competition on grass or artificial surfaces. Copper Peak is the only site in the United States, and one of only six in the world, that are able to host elite ski flying events. It will be the only ski flying hill in the world with a plastic surface. The Copper Peak board of directors will begin plans to renovate the historic site, according to Bob Jacquart, chairman of Copper Peak s organizing committee. Renovations will include resurfacing the jump, installing an artificial surface landing zone and other enhancements to equip the site for year around ski flying and training. Recent FIS competitions have only been held at European sites because of the extreme specifications required for ski flying. Copper Peak s 35-degree, 469 foot in-run rises 26 stories above the hillside and is the largest ski jumping structure in the world. Copper Peak is unlike any other site we considered for these events and will be the only ski flying hill in the summer Grand Prix Series, said FIS Director Walter Hofer. This unique site, combined with the commitment shown by the Copper Peak board and the larger community, make it a perfect host for our Grand Prix and Nordic events, and a strong contender for additional upcoming competitions. Copper Peak hosted the first international ski flying competition in North America in february of The last meet was in be ready to groom December 1-March 31 (the official season) and keep the equipment in running order. Remember, volunteers do this for you the snowmobiler. Gogebic Area Grooming is extremely fortunate to have a groomer barn/garage. Garages are not a luxury, but a necessity. Groomers must be thawed out and kept inside to repair. There are lots of dollars in Jacquart said Copper Peak promoters had long aspired to host additional FIS events and the Copper Peak group had left nothing to chance in this latest opportunity. He said Tunheim, a consulting firm with a strong practice around intersections of sports and business as been selected to manage Copper Peak s submissions with FIS. This endorsement from FIS is another step toward making sure the world take notice of what Copper Peak has to offer, said Charles Supercynski, chairman of the Copper Peak board. I am confident with Bob Jacquart s new leadership and vision and the addition of Tunheim, we have the experience to help us make this happen. Hosting the FIS Ski Flying Grand Prix, combined with the events at Iron Mountain, will help secure Michigan s position as an international ski competition destination, said State Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba. Some of the world s greatest ski jumpers and flyers, including Olympic champions from Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, started their flying careers at Copper Peak. From , a total of 10 ski flying competitions took place at the Peak. For decades Copper Peak, its panoramic views of up to 40 miles and its chairlift rides, have drawn more than 10,000 visitors per year. Now we can watch for the elite ski flyers, who can soar more than 500 feet!! equipment. Our club heats, stores and has tools and maintenance items the grant does not support. We have kind individuals and some businesses that support our club and that certainly helps with those expenses. Championship Snow Drags Saturday, Jan 9, 2016 In 1991, the seed was planted for the start of a Snowmobile Hillclimb Racing Circuit by Skip Schulz of Ontonagon, MI. In 1992, Skip worked with the North Country Snowmobile Club to hold a Snowmobile Drag Race. The Hillclimb ran for a couple of years, then in 1995 a lease was obtained to bring hill climbing to Copper Peak. The Copper Peak Snowmobile Hillclimb led to the conception of the Mid-American Snowmobile Tournament of Expert Riders to be called the MASTERS Racing Circuit. The Masters went on to host Snowmobile Hillclimbs throughout the Upper Peninsula. However, it would not just be Snowmobile Hillclimbs that the Masters would sanction. The circuit expanded to include more Snowmobile Drag Races throughout the U.P, Wisconsin and Minnesota, focusing on expanding into Motorcycle Hillclimb s and summer events, thus changing their name to Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Riders. The Masters has a Junior Division, 3 classes in the Vintage Division and in the Snow Drags and Hillcross, the Masters has both Trail Stock and Race Stock Classes. In all the forms of competition, the Masters has Pro Stock and Pro Mod. UP Championship Snow Drags will be held Saturday, Jan 9, 2016 in Ontonagon, MI. Lake Trout Classic Fishing Competition & BBQ Cook-Off May 20, 21, & 22, 2016 The Lake Superior tournament is in May because this is the time of the year fishermen can actually fish in small boats as the fish are close to shore yet. So, come and cast a line in hopes of catching a beautiful lake trout! The lure starts a circle of ripples on the water. Some years ago, Larry and Diane Greig, owners of Greig s Taxidermy and Tackle, took their love of fishing, and cast the idea of a trout tournament on Lake Superior to support the Ontonagon Cancer Association. The positive ripples continue today! The Greig s had experienced cancer with friends and family members. They wanted to do something to help especially since all the money raised is used locally. In 2005, the Greig s got a few sponsors, a few teams, donated prizes, and started what is now a very successful event with a far-reaching ripple! Peter was still a young boy when his family fled Hungary to escape the political turmoil of the late 1950 s. Feeling that the pressures that forced his family to leave their home were much like the pressures the American Indians were experiencing in their dealings with the US government, Peter decided to create a series of enormous carvings to insure that their plight would not be forgotten. Choosing not to go to college Peter spent the next eighteen years touring the United States and Canada, carving at least one sculpture in every state of the union, and one or two in Canada. Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow was the sixtieth sculpture, completed in Peter had asked for and accepted no compensation for any of the carvings that he left on the Trail. The communities where he worked provided him with meals and housing, and the logs that he needed. His generosity earned him the name of Indian Giver, the title of his biography. Peter often sold smaller carvings to cover his expenses, and occasionally completed a larger project. The log that Wakefield provided to him was long enough for two sculptures, so Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow has a Siamese brother. Because Peter had been paid a commission to carve him, Ish-Quay-Gaw-Bow (The Last Man in Line), is not considered to be a Whispering Giant. Ish-Quay-Gaw-Bow can be seen behind The Wildernest Chalet at Indianhead Mountain.

26 Lake Gogebic Times GOGEBIC ( ) Page 27 Natural Resources Commission approves special Lake Gogebic walleye regulations At a November 5th regular meeting of the Michigan Natural Resources Commission, commissioners unanimously approved special walleye sportfishing regulations for the Upper Peninsula s Lake Gogebic. The new regulations, which take immediate effect, will allow anglers the option of keeping two smaller walleyes from 13 inches up to 15 inches within their five-fish daily possession limit. The proposed rule change, however, will not require anglers to keep fish smaller than 15 inches. This regulation change was a result of input gained at a public meeting July 22 (2015) in Marenisco Township. Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries managers noted that Lake Gogebic is unique among other lakes because of the high level of natural reproduction of walleye that this lake annually produces. As a result of the strong natural reproduction of walleye, this lake has a dominance of small walleye more abundant than other lakes in Michigan. Analysis of the Lake Gogebic biological data, as well as input from the public, formed the basis for this regulation change.
