2 Second Session: Sub-group Discussion GROUP 1: TOURISM AND CULTURE (a) Development Activities of Tourist Area Conduct of survey on the existing potential/local information (e.g. food, sweetmeats, handicraft products, jewelry, art and culture, traditional plays, and shopping places) should be undertaken to develop and increase the potential of the community, Historical and cultural sites and specialty products in Lat Krabang District (e.g., mangoes, fragrant bananas, gourami, salted eggs, fragrant coconuts) should be introduced to tourists. Product exhibition center should be set up to demonstrate the manufacturing process, having tourists join the activities of the center Home stay program should be introduced to the retired tourists who have sufficient purchasing power such as those in Asian countries, Agricultural areas and local way of life, especially in the upper part of the motorway should be maintained for tourist attraction, There should be a variety of goods, including products from other regions, to sell in the floating market Some tourist sites should be restored/ and the quality of goods should be improved, Tourist facilities should be provided (e.g. parking lots, signposts, clean public toilets, health centers, hospitals), Scenery along canal banks should be improved Khu Khlong Nam Sai (clean and clear canal promotion) Project which is successfully implemented by Prawet District Office and also Na Ban Na Mong (tidy house front) Project should be promoted, Roads linking to tourist sites from main roads should be increased and/or improved, including shuttle minibuses, Conservation of culture, tourist sites, and traditional plays should be reiterated (b) Services for Tourists Welcoming tourists with hospitality and do not annoy them while shopping, Safety for tourists should be emphasized, for example, 2

3 There should be welcoming activities such as Thai classical dance and other traditional plays. Tourist information should be provided during a guided tour Provision of public parks, More hotels and accommodations for tourists should be provided, Contests of local products to improve the product quality (e.g. fighting fish, fighting cocks) should be carried out, Development groups should be set up to encourage competition in developing their responsible areas (e.g., Wat Lan Boon Group, Wat Sangkha Racha Group), Related local authorities/agencies should pay more attention to natural environment (e.g., wastewater management and removal of Jawa weeds), More religious sites should be included in tourism program, Tourist sites should cover the area between Lat Krabang and nearby areas (e.g., jewelry industry in Prawet District), Wooden bridges and walkways along canal banks should be improved. (c) Human Resources Development for Tourism Development of tourism-related staff should be encouraged, especially the foreign language courses, Occupational training should be provided for local people, Foreign language training center should be established, (d) Public Relations Activities for Tourism Public relations on local products and tourist sites should be promoted such as brochures and web sites in Thai and foreign languages, Tourism information center should be set up in two levels: district level and group of districts level (e.g. Si Nakharin Group including Lat Krabang, Prawet, and Min Buri Districts). It is noted that the above-suggested development activities require the budget and qualified personnel as well as cooperation from local people. GROUP 2: URBAN LIVING AND ENVIRONMENT Issues Trend and direction of Suvannabhumi Aeropolis, Land tenants in the study areas, Encroachment on canal banks, Public health facilities (hospitals), 3

4 Education (schools), Solid waste and solid waste disposal system, Water supply system which does not serve well for local demand, Frequent blackouts, and Inadequate road lighting. Cultural town program should be studied in detail, Development of sub-canals should be implemented together with main canals, Transport by boat should be developed, Development of canals should be supported towards promoting tourism, Lat Krabang water gate should be opened to discharge wastewater, There should be more public health centers, More public transport system should be promoted, The government should provide primary support for local development, There should be sub-roads for bicycles, There should be airport link at sub-stations, Pavement should be improved, and The following issues should be studied. - Wastewater problems, - Cancellation of Lat Krabang Water Gate (for travel and tourism), and - Cancellation of green zone due to unavailable land for agriculture. GROUP 3: BUSINESS AND INVESTMENT (a) Northern Part of Motorway Area Hotels along Rom Klao road, Golf driving ranges, Department stores, Relocation of ICD and/or modification of ICD to reduce impacts on traffic and community, Duty free shops, Offices, Casinos (if possible), and Museums. 4

5 (b) Southern Part of Motorway Area Offices, No entertainment business, Businesses which are related to and/or supporting to an one-day trip, Souvenir shops such as duty free shops and OTOP shops, Business avenue, and International health centers/hospitals. Measures The government should provide support in terms of infrastructure, Personnel development should be promoted such as transport management course, Government policy should be apparent such as city planning, and Suvannabhumi Airport Plan. 5
