It is so nice to see you again! So tell me about this upcoming trip that you are planning. Ms. Molly: Well, for our fifteenth wedding anniversary, I decided to (1) a trip to Europe for me and my husband! Travel Agent: That s a very excellent way to celebrate your anniversary, ma am! There are a lot of romantic places to visit in Europe. How many countries do you plan to visit? Ms. Molly: Since we are planning to take a three-week vacation, I suppose we can visit four different countries. Travel Agent: Excellent! Which European countries do you want to include in your (2)? GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Adjective Order (5-6 minutes) In English, there are eight basic types of adjectives: opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, and purpose. When we use two or more of these adjectives in a sentence at the same time, we have to follow a certain order. This means that one type of adjective always comes first before another. The right adjective order is as follows: opinion size age shape color origin material purpose Examples: The big (size), rectangular (shape), brown (color) table is an indigenous craft from Africa. Rome is a magnificent (opinion), huge (size), and old (age) city of Europe. Our tall (size) Filipino(origin) tour guide is looking for the other tourists. If I were to go on a vacation, I would like to go to a safe (opinion), small (size), Asian (origin) city. Remember: We use commas to separate the multiple adjectives that we use in a sentence. Sometimes, if there are more than two adjectives, we also use the coordinating conjunction and before the last adjective in the series except when such denotes origin. 4

5 Examples: The most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines are the pristine, vast and clear beaches. For tourism to grow in a country, the government has to make sure that its travel destinations are safe, accessible and budget-friendly. Comprehension Check: Arrange these adjectives to complete the sentence below: red noisy three-year old steel big This summer, we are planning to go to Disneyland to ride the,,,, rollercoaster. 5

6 Exercise 1: Incomplete Sentences (5-6 minutes) Choose the word or phrase that would best complete the following sentences. 1. During our trip to Italy, we ate at a old, Sicilian pizza parlor. a. new b. small c. Venetian d. manufacturing 2. The mayor of New York opened the huge, new, and heritage museums to visitors yesterday. a. state-of-the-art b. state-of the-nation c. state-of-the-nature d. state-of-the-artifact 3. China has one of the and oldest cultures in Asia. a. rich b. richer c. richest d. enriched 4. Last summer, I bought a wonderful,, Italian clock as a travel souvenir. a. art b. old c. wooden d. timekeeping 5. During our trip to Jamaica, we rode a small,, red jet to the island. a. new b. renew c. newer d. renewing 6
