1 Sports University of Tirana The Sports University of Tirana is the only institution of high education of this kind in the Republic of Albania, aiming at qualifying teachers of physical education and sport specialists. The University provides for the full scientific qualification of physical education and sports specialists, finalizing with the Master and Doctoral level of studies. The creation of the Sports University of Tirana dates back the year 1948, when the Technicum of Physical Education was started as the first high school furnishing with teachers of physical education to come. Ten years later, in 1958 following the creation of the University of Tirana, the branch of Physical Education was included as an integral part of the two-year Institute of History and Philology. Later the branch was altered into a separate faculty having as its destination Teachers of Physical Education for primary and secondary schools. In 1960, by decision of the Council of Ministers, no. 394, dated 28/09/1960 the Institute of Physical Education was opened, which a year later still by decision of the Council of Ministers was given the name Vojo Kushi including a threeyear study period, equivalent to the system of higher education. In 1971, again by decision of the Council of Ministers, the name was altered into the High Institute of Physical Education Vojo Kushi. In 1993 the period of studied was extended over 4 academic years. In 25/05/2000, by decision of the Council of Ministers, no. 266 the institution was labeled the Academy of Physical Education and Sports Vojo Kushi. Finally, by decision of the Council of Ministers, no. 123 dated 17/02/2010 the institution receives the label the Sports University of Tirana.

12 Places to visit in Tirana 1. Clock Tower Et'hem Haji Bey began to build the clock tower in the years and ended it with the help of the richest families of Tirana. In 1928 the Albanian state bought an hour in Germany and raised the tower to 35m. During World War 2. Haji Et hem Beu s Mosque This is the only still existing mosque out of eight mosques that were built in Tirana in century XVIII-XIX. Its foundation was laid by Molla Bey at the end of the century XVIII, and the chapel was completed by his son Haji Ethem Bey in the first quarter of the century XIX.

13 3. Tirana Mosaic The Tirana Mosaic is a famous Albanian landmark that is thought to have been part of a Roman house built in the first century. Later in the fourth and fifth centuries, a Paleo-Christian Basilica was built at this site. The ruins of the Roman rural villa were discovered in Fortress of Tirana The Fortress of Tirana is one of the greatest cultural and historical monuments in Tirana. It is a fortification with rectangular shaped layout 160mx125m stretching more on the east-west direction. Judging from the technique and construction used to build it is thought that it has been constructed around the end of the 18th century. It is supposed to have been built by Ahmet Pasha Bargjini ( ).

14 5. National Historical Museum The National History Museum has been opened on the 28th of October 1981 and is the largest museum in Albania. It occupies a total area of m m2 is used for exhibitions. In the Museum are exhibited 6290 museum artifacts. 6. Tanner's Bridge The Tanners' Bridge is an 18th century Ottoman period stone footbridge. The bridge was once part of the Shëngjergj Road that linked Tirana with the eastern highlands. The bridge went across the Lana stream and was adjacent to the area of butchers and leather workers. The Lana was rerouted in the 1930s and the bridge was neglected. In the 1990s the bridge was restored to its former glory and is now used by pedestrians only. The Tanners' Bridge is composed by a main arch, on which the bridge raises in a back shape.
