4 On two feet When it comes to walking, the Peak District is one of the most varied and accessible areas in the UK to get into your stride. Experienced walkers will relish longdistance routes such as the Pennine Way, Trans Pennine Trail, Derwent Valley Heritage Way, Limestone Way and Gritstone Trail. Blow away the cobwebs on one of the area s famous gritstone edges such as Stanage, Froggatt, Curbar, the Roaches or Ramshaw Rocks, or on windswept landmarks such as Kinder Scout, Shutlingsloe or Bosley Cloud. You can choose shorter, less demanding options on riverside rambles or a network of trafficfree trails in the Peak District, the Historic Border Country and the National Forest, classic estates such as Chatsworth or circular routes around reservoirs, such as Derwent, Carsington and Tittesworth. 9 On two Wheels LONG DISTANCE CYCLING Tackle a wide variety of long distance routes to experience everything from rugged moorland to lush countryside - such as the Trans Pennine Trail, Pennine Cycleway and Cheshire Cycleway. TAKE IT EASY. If you haven t cycled for a while, why not ease yourself back into the saddle by hiring an electric bike? Many cycle hire centres and some accommodation providers and attractions hire them out and provide charging facilities. The network s main hub is at Carsington Water, near Wirksworth, where you can pedal in a scenic lakeside setting. If you have mobility problems and are keen to try cycling, Peak Cycle Hire has a variety of cycles suitable for all abilities. FAMILY CYCLING A favourite option is the 8 1 /2 mile long Monsal Trail, a former railway line taking in four re-opened tunnels and weaving though some of the area s prettiest landscapes. There are over 65 miles of traffic free trails including easy pedalling on the High Peak and Tissington Trails. The off road cycle route around the stunning Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs is an ideal family adventure whilst offering a real sense of remoteness. 15 On the Water On the water Make waves in a wide variety of water sports from kayaking and canoeing to rowing, sailing and windsurfing. You might be surprised to learn that the landlocked Peak District has a number of reservoirs and some fast-flowing rivers where you can earn or tone up your sea legs. Whether you re an absolute beginner or a seasoned surfer, you ll find everything from taster sessions to advanced tuition at venues from Torside reservoir in Longdendale to Staunton Harold reservoir in the National Forest. Favourite venues for all ages include Carsington Water near Wirksworth, Tittesworth reservoir in the Staffordshire Moorlands and Ogston Reservoir near Matlock, plus stretches of the River Derwent (near Matlock). TAKE IT EASY. Wind down and opt for a slower pace of life on a narrowboat on waterways such as the Peak Forest and Macclesfield Canals in the north to Mercia Marina and the Trent and Mersey Canal in the south. Canal cruising is a great way to unwind and see our superb and varied countryside in a completely different light. Chill out with some relaxing fishing on a river or reservoir as you take a welldeserved break from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Some of the world s most experienced climbers and cavers learned their craft on the dramatic gritstone and limestone rock faces and amid the honeycomb of caves in the Peak District. Sheer gritstone faces such as Stanage Edge, Windgather Rocks and the Roaches offer plenty of scope to live life on the edge. Regardless of whether you are an enthusiastic beginner or world-class athlete, there are plenty of crags for you to discover. Caving is highly popular and one of the best ways to discover the Peak s inner beauty. Our limestone caverns include the mysterious Titan near Castleton, the UK s biggest natural cavern (464ft, 141.5m). 22 In the air Take to the skies and feel as free as a bird as you harness the power of our famous thermal air currents. Hang gliding and paragliding are both popular pursuits in the Peak District, and a great way to get a panoramic view of some stunning scenery. If you fancy a unique personal challenge there are several BHPA (British Hangliding and Paragliding Association) schools in the Peak District. Book a tandem flight for the scenery and sensation or sign up for a training course. If you simply want to watch the action, Mam Tor, which overlooks Castleton at the western end of the Hope Valley, is a major local centre for hang gliding and paragliding. Paragliders should only fly from sites where access is arranged with land owners. If you prefer the feel of an aircraft around you, you can opt for a spot of microlighting or traditional gliding. From former packhorse routes across sweeping moors to quiet lanes and ex-railway lines to grassy trails, the Peak District offers a broad range of riding routes to suit all abilities. If you re a horse owner keen to bring your trusty mount on holiday, a number of B&Bs and self-catering properties offer grazing and stables. You ll also find special facilities for you and your steed at Hartington on the High Peak Trail, near the start of the Pennine Bridleway. Suitable for horse riders, mountain bikers and walkers, the off-road bridleway offers hours of safe and enjoyable riding, whether you plan to follow the linear route or loop back to your starting point. If you like to watch horses and riders in action, head for Chatsworth s annual 24 Active Peak International Horse Trials each May (www. chatsworth.org), or visit one of our many agricultural shows throughout the summer for show jumping, dressage, carriage driving and showing classes.
