Our main focus in working with the widows has been the alleviation of poverty. For almost 10 years, we have used a working collective model to improve income, food security and build skills for these women. Thanks to the support of donors, training from government programs and hard work on the part of the widows, about a year ago the widows were able to start their own poultry farming businesses. Part of this business development program has included establishing a low interest loan fund, which assists the widows to buy the things they need to grow their businesses. The loan fund is operated by the group members for the group members and has been very successful so far and many of our poultry farmers are starting to make money. However, within the group it is apparent that those who have family or other sources of money are able to grow their businesses much more quickly than the poorest members. The widows who have been able to build chicken houses and fence in their flocks have much higher yields. Our plan is to have a special loan opportunity for those widows who need to build houses. The funds you raise will assist with this project. DO YOU LIVE IN OTTAWA? Through a partnership with The Trailing Edge in Ottawa, used laptops are distributed to the Asembo Bay students who attend post secondary education and used in the computer resource centre. If you live in Ottawa and are interested in carrying a used laptop to Kenya please let your Huma Challenge consultant know. We ll arrange for you to collect the laptop from Huma Challenge offices in the Byward Market before your departure. Many thanks Peggy and Wendy. Your Adventure Since 2007, The HERA Mission of Canada has been working with an inspiring group of women from Asembo Bay, in Western Kenya, who have committed their lives to fighting the devastating impact of HIV, AIDs, Malaria, and TB. These diseases have wiped out an entire generation leaving 100s of orphans and widows. The HERA Mission has been sponsoring children to school, supporting local businesses led by widows, developing an agricultural program and many other initiatives that are bringing hope and resilience back to Asembo Bay. This is your chance to take your support of The Hera Mission to the next level. Travel to Asembo Bay with Peggy and Devlin Taillon to volunteer your time on a number of community projects, working alongside the widows of Asembo Bay. Before leaving home, we ll ask you to raise $2000 to support the ongoing work of The Hera Mission. You ll be rewarded with an incredible experience at Asembo Bay, personally escorted by Peggy, as well as an unforgettable wildlife safari in the Masai Mara and a visit to David Sheldrick s Wildlife Trust and Elephant Orphanage. For those of you who can spare a few more days in Africa, why not spoil yourself with a 3 day extension to the exquisite island of Zanzibar! Community Project During your time at Asembo Bay Village you will participate in community project work, including: 1. Working side by side with widows on the shamba (the farm). Most of the widows farm on their own property as well as on the group s plot. 2. Helping with the development of youth employment programs 3. Improving computer literacy skills for school children. 4. Expanding the irrigation system on the group shamba World Expeditions Travel Group - Donna Lawrence 5/10/ :12:59 AM

Responsible Travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible & sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website Trip grading Adventure touring Sightseeing, community project work and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity. To enjoy these adventures we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude. Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure. Important Note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any other supplied information, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control. Upon registration please let us know if you have any particular skill you think may be relevant. If people sign up with specific skills (not just computer skills) we can probably find a way to capitalize on them with a bit of advance notice. Closer to the departure date we will write to you with more details about the community projects so you can indicate which project/s you d like to partake in. Child Protection Policy Children working and living in tourist areas are especially vulnerable to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Huma Charity Challenge is committed to the protection of children everywhere. On itineraries where travellers are volunteering at a school, we have in place a Child Protection Code of Conduct, which is modelled on World Vision s Child Protection and Trafficking best practice protocol. For these trips we ask that travellers read, sign and return the code of conduct to their reservations consultant. We also ask that they provide a Police Record Check (or equivalent in their country). The check is to ensure that members of the group do not have a history of child related offences. Online Fundraising Portal When you set up an online fundraising page on the funds you raise are automatically transferred to Hera Mission of Canada. This secure online platform makes it easy for your donors to pledge their support and minimizes the administration for Hera Mission of Canada. When you register for this challenge with Huma Challenge, you will receive a confirmation kit, including a welcome letter from Hera Mission of Canada. This letter will provide you with instructions on how to set up your personal online fundraising page and will also act as your authority to fundraise on behalf of Hera Mission of Canada. Suggested Extensions 4 day Zanzibar Retreat Country Information Although lying on the Equator, Kenya is blessed with a varied landscape. These range from vast desert in the north, through the forest and snow capped central regions of Mount Kenya, to the grassy plains and savannah in the south and the humid coastline. Similar to Tanzania, the Great Rift Valley runs the length of the country and is home to an amazing selection of animals. Kenya s economy is largely agricultural and its main exports are tea and coffee, though tourism is a large provider of foreign currency. Kenya s population is over 37 million and is increasing rapidly. Most Kenyan people are from either the Bantu (originating in West Africa) or Nilotic (originating in Nile Valley) language groups, being divided further into about 70 tribal groups. The Kikuyu and Luo are the largest groups. There are also a distinct number of Somalis in the north east and Swahili people on the coast along with Indians, British and Europeans found in the cities. Climate Kenya lies on the equator and has a pleasant tropical climate, but there s large regional climatic variations influenced by several factors, including altitude. Kenya s daytime temperatures average between 20 C/68 F and 28 C/82 F, but it is warmer on the coast. The coast is hot and humid all year round, but the heat is pleasant and tempered by the monsoon winds. Kenya is too close to the equator to experience a real winter and summer. The dry season runs from June to October and the wet season runs from November to May. A Typical Day Daily routine at Asembo Bay World Expeditions Travel Group - Donna Lawrence 5/10/ :12:59 AM

On arrival at Asembo Bay we will be greeted with a traditional welcome from the community. Each morning we will be served breakfast at the guesthouse or homestay and following breakfast we will take the short walk to the project sites where we ll work for the morning. Lunch will be prepared by the Asembo Bay Women for Development and taken at the community centre. Following lunch you will return to the community project work for another 2 hours. The remainder of the afternoon is free to explore Asembo Bay, or you can return to the hotel to rest. A popular way to see the end of the day in is from the second floor balcony of the Sun Downer Bar, with a refreshing drink in your hand. Tradition is that visitors pay for the local s drinks, and with drink prices very cheap, the bar bill will be a pleasant surprise! You should budget CAD$20 35 each day for drinks at Sun Downer Bar and water. Accommodation at Asembo Bay We are able to offer two options for accommodations, either at Asembo Bay Guest House or a home stay option. For those choosing a home stay option, you will be welcomed into the home of one of the members of the Asembo Bay Women for Development, to fully experience the Kenyan way of life. Widows with good English skills will host you and the homes will have electricity, a flush toilet, running water, mosquito nets in good condition and a private bedroom for the guest for sleeping in. If you are travelling with a partner and would like to be accommodated with them please let us know at the time of booking. It is likely that the bedding will be in single beds. For those who prefer the guesthouse will enjoy the type of accommodations which most Kenyan s use when travelling, very similar to a bed and breakfast. The guesthouse has good security, private rooms (some with double beds), mosquito nets, electricity and flush toilets. You can purchase water, soda, beer and other alcoholic beverages in the guesthouse at a very reasonable cost. The trip cost will not vary depending on your choice of accommodation. Please indicate which accommodation you d prefer when you register for the trip. Meals at Asembo Bay Breakfast will be served at your accommodation each day and will generally include bread, eggs and fruit. Tea with milk will be served. Lunch will be served between 1 2pm and dinner will be served between 8 9pm. The Asembo Bay Women s Group will prepare lunch and dinner during our stay, with most of the catering provided by the widows group. The food will be authentic Luo fare. Please be aware that the food served at lunch and dinner is often quite similar and the variety will not be wide. Meats generally will include fish, chicken, goat and beef. Meats are typically served in a tomato sauce. There is no refrigeration so meat is slaughtered and served the same day or day after. Fish is caught in the morning, prepared and dried in the sun on a stick before it is cooked. The main vegetable is similar to kale and is stir fried. It s the main source of iron and is served at every meal if possible. There are often root vegetables available (depending on the season). Ugali is a staple and is typically served at every meal (the locals eat it without utensils). Ugali is made from white corn flour although there is also a brown Ugali version, which is common in the village made of millet and cassava. Vegetarians and Gluten Free Diets: Beyond bread, the diet in the village is gluten free. There are plenty of lentils for vegetarians, which are served like a Dahl. Afternoon tea will be served around 5pm and will include bread and tea with milk. Bar s in Kenya are usually called hotels and there are also a couple of local pubs. If you want to try to local beer while watching the sunset over Lake Victoria, you can visit the Sundowner Hotel which is right on the main road in the village. Safe drinking water will be provided with each of the meals served. Bottled water can be purchased in many place in the village, you can also buy juice and soda pop in the village. The community will host a farewell celebration on your final night at Asembo Bay; again prepare yourself for traditional food and great entertainment. Medical attention at Asembo Bay World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 10/5/ :06:13 PM

Asembo Bay has its own medical dispensary and small private clinic that can attend to minor medical ailments like cuts, bruises, sunburn, dehydration, stomach upset. Medical issue more serious will be directed to a private hospital at Kisumu (2 drive hours from Asembo Bay). A member from the Asembo Bay Women for Development group will travel with the guest to help with the process. Making sure you are healthy and feeling well is our top priority so please make sure you drink enough water and stop and rest if you are feeling too hot. You will be very close to the equator and visitors often underestimate the strength of the sun and the effects of the heat. Simple measure like wearing sunscreen and a hat are the best prevention of more serious health issues. We would much prefer that you take a rest and hydrate frequently rather than having to go to the hospital for the drip. Cultural Learning Program at Asembo Bay During your time at Asembo Bay village you will also participate in a cultural learning program. Initially when you arrive you will have a briefing about the culture to help you understand some of the differences in culture and lifestyle within the village. This will better equip you with the knowledge required to get the most of your time at Asembo Bay. For example, you ll learn about the protocol for greeting and what is taboo talk. The people of Asembo Bay are very understanding that visitors ways are different, but you ll find it easier to make friends and have wonderful conversations if you are not inadvertently offending someone. You ll also have the opportunity to learn some of the interesting ways of the Luo culture, their dance and how to make the traditional dish. Luo s are very proud of their culture and really enjoy sharing it with visitors. Dietary Requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. In Kenya, peanuts are called ground nuts and they are lightly roasted and available almost everywhere so it is not possible for us to guarantee a peanut free environment. We strongly encourage that travelers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. Accommodation on the Trip Outside of our time at Asembo Bay we ll stay in 4 Star accommodations in Nairobi and in the Masai Mara National Park. Closer to the departure date we will be able to provide you with the specific details. Equipment Required A comprehensive gear list is provided in the pre departure information provided on booking. Please pack work boots, gloves and clothes for your time working on the projects at Asembo Bay World Expeditions Travel Group - Automated Import 10/5/ :06:13 PM

Wildlife The wilderness areas of Africa are populated by large numbers of wild and potentially dangerous animals. The trip aims to view these animals in their natural habitat, uncontrolled by fences. Your experienced guides will make every effort to ensure the safety of the group at all times. Please be aware that all safari travel, including vehicle safaris in the proximity of wild animals is never entirely without risk. By travelling into wild areas in search of wild animals, all participants accept that they are choosing an adventure that includes an element of risk and this is an inherent aspect of the enjoyment of this style of travel. Vehicles & Safety During the course of your trip, we will use a variety of vehicles, all which are fit for purpose and the conditions encountered. It should be noted that laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in your home country and on occasion some vehicles may not have seat belts fitted. While game viewing within a national park could be one example. Whilst we do not include animal rides on most of our trips, there are occasions where it may be possible to undertake them optionally and to do so is at your own risk. Note that helmets and professional riding equipment are not available in all circumstances.
