Bet most of you don t. How many times have you (and I) driven up the arid Owens Valley on the 395 (going to Bishop, Mammoth or Yosemite) to do our mountain climbing and backpacking activities and passed close by this tiny town? In March of this year, I participated in a very fun weekend at June Lake sponsored by the SC Natural Science Section. Several of us spent Saturday cross-country skiing while others snowshoed. We had a grand time. But, unfortunately, the next day proved too stormy in the mountains for outdoor activities so we all headed back to LA. After an obligatory stop at Schat s Bakery in Bishop, I picked up a tourist brochure. There I read about the Laws Railroad Museum and Historic Village. I am always reluctant to pass up any opportunity for a new experience and/ or to learn some history. So, having plenty of time before we needed to be back in the city, I begged my driving partner to head over to see what it was about. Wow, was it worth it! Even my initially skeptical carpool partner agreed. Laws Station was settled in 1883 as a depot on the Carson and Colorado Railroad. Tracks were built to connect the mines on the east side of the Owens Valley with the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Trains carried minerals from Owens Lake, salt from the Saline Valley, and gold, zinc and other metals from mines in southeast Nevada. The village of Laws was dismantled and used for salvage when the local mines and railroad closed. The last train arrived in Laws in April Trucking was cheaper than freight travel and Los Angeles had bought up most of the valley for water rights making life there virtually impossible. Now the original Laws has been recreated by moving historic buildings there from around the Owens Valley. The Laws museum includes historical railroads and small towns of the late 19th century. Lots of buildings and artifacts are on display. The original 1883 depot and agent s house still stand. There is also a ranch house, pharmacy, bank, post office, schoolhouse, doctor and dentist s office and a barber shop, as well as a mine and mining equipment. Some of these displays have authentic sounds and voices which come out of nowhere and may unnerve you as they did me. The Laws Railroad Museum and Historical Village is located on 11 acres 4.5 miles outside of Bishop, on the site of the original Laws Railroad Station and town. It is an outdoor museum open every day between 10 am and 4 pm. Though those are prime hiking hours, you may find yourself, as I did, with just the perfect time to visit this unique museum in the Owens Valley. n Entering sea cave, Santa Cruz Island 2 Avenues July-September 2016

3 Awards continued from page 1 assisted with Navigation Practice hikes from 1996 to He also served as a very skilled Assistant Group Leader for the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC) from 1999 to In 2003, Jason was a founding member of the Chapter s Outings Management Committee, and served on the OMC until 2007 and then again in Jason became an M-rated in 2002 and has led, co-led, assisted or evaluated over 190 Club outings. In recognition of his commitment and service to the Angeles Chapter s outings program, in 2005, Jason was awarded the Chapter s highest honor for an outings leader, the Chester Versteeg Outings Award. Wayne Vollaire organizes and leads outings for the Wilderness Adventures Section and has been exposing folks to our very special Channel Islands for over a decade. Wayne achieved the HPS snowshoe emblem (climbing 25 peaks in the winter season with snowshoes) and then continued leading Wilderness Adventures Section snowshoe outings so that WTC graduates and others can enjoy the joys of the So Cal winter season. Wayne has shared his leadership talents and passion for the outdoors over a range of Angeles Chapter entities, serving with enthusiasm and dedication. His Angeles Chapter involvement began while hiking with the Hundred Peaks Section. After a number of years of peak bagging (and changing his auto license plate to I (heart) PEAKS ), Wayne joined the HPS Management Committee and served as Chair of HPS for two terms. Wayne is a Lower Peaks list finisher and has led many scheduled hikes for that Section. Wayne has checked off many people on their I provisional hikes and has served both as an Instructor and Group Leader with the Orange County Wilderness Training Course for ten years. Wayne has made a tremendous contribution by teaching, inspiring and encouraging Angeles Chapter outdoor enthusiasts and new leaders. n Pinnacles National Park By Marlen Mertz In April, The Wilderness Adventures Section cosponsored, with the Natural Science Section, an outing to California s newest National Park, Pinnacles. Threat of rain convinced half the registered participants to cancel. But those who took the risk and came were rewarded with a picture perfect (though sometimes misty) trip and many adventures. Ta l u s c a v e J e ff C a b l e P h o t o g r a p h y This is a small park but a very special one with enjoyable hikes and outstanding scenery. The park is located in Central CA, east of the coastal range from Big Sur. Pinnacles National Monument was established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and legislation was passed by Congress in 2012 to designate it a National Park Here s the story behind this special piece of land. In summary, 23 million years ago, there was a volcanic eruption in Lancaster. With the formation of the San Andreas fault, the remains of the volcano were split between two tectonic plates. Two-thirds of the Pinnacles volcanic mass started slowly moving northwest. The other 1/3 remained in Lancaster and is now located on private property. Over millions of years, volcanic rubble wore away and steep ravines developed, boulders fell into canyons and stream beds and talus caves were formed. Part of the adventure is hiking through these fascinating caves. Pinnacles National Park is part of the CA Condor Recovery Program and serves as a release and management site for the rare birds. There are currently 36 free-flying adult and juvenile condors managed by Pinnacles National Park. Condors do not migrate, so can be observed all year. We were able to see condors roosting on the ridge just SE of our campground. The drive to the park after exiting the 5 freeway is outstanding, with rolling green ranchland and few buildings. I recommend going in the spring to experience the green landscape and wildflowers along the trails. Make sure not to go in the summer when it is too hot. We are hoping to have another outing there next March/April for those interested in visiting. One of the youngest participants 8 year old Ian made a little presentation for his classmates about his Pinnacles trip. His parents thought you might enjoy this. Click on the link to see Ian s video: Ian loves to play video games when he is not camping. Thank you leaders Sharon Moore and Keith Martin and Leaders/Naturalists Cliff and Gabi McLean and Jay Schneider. See more photos from the trip on page 4. n July-September 2016 Avenues 3

5 Mt. Pacifico from Mill Creek Summit Seven Years after the Fire Article and photos by Mark Mitchell the welcome sight of mature conifers with a carpet of grass and flowers beneath them, looking just like the whole area looked before the fire. Seven years ago, the slopes under Mt. Pacifico were ravaged by the Station Fire. And now here we were eight hikers who came to see what time and renewal had brought to the formerly forested mountains. For those who had been here pre-burn, the trailhead looked pretty bleak. We found a comfortable picnic table in the camp near the summit, and even found the well-hidden summit register. On the way back we were reminded that it is not just But not far down the trail, under the charred trees that bore witness to the fire, we found ourselves surrounded by verdant shrubs and abundant wildflowers. No doubt encouraged by El Niño rains, the flowers displayed a full range of colors white ceanothus, yellow wall flower, red paintbrush and dreaded purple poodle-dog, among others. However there were no signs of pine saplings or other new trees yet. flowers and shrubs that have returned, but also wild creatures, like the wise-looking lizard who watched us from the side of the trail. n Most of the way out, we found ourselves hiking against a current of northward-bound Pacific Crest Trail throughhikers. About a mile from the summit, as the crow flies, we finally reached the border of the fire region. Here was July-September 2016 Avenues 5

6 Four Day Channel Island Outing Over Memorial Day Weekend Photos by trip participants John Norvell, Gigi Harvey, Sam Chow, Igor Treybush, Restie Delfin, Rich Kim, Marlen Mertz The traditional Memorial Day weekend outing to the Channel Islands brought us to Santa Cruz Island this year. It was even more of an adventure than in the past due to the need to skiff to shore multiple times throughout the weekend. The Island s pier is damaged and not in operation. It must either be repaired or replaced (which is the current NPS plan). Fifty participants and four leaders joined in activities including a hike to one of the highest peaks on the Island, El Montanon, followed by a visit to an outlying historic ranch on the eastern shore. The next day we took a shuttle trip to the conservancy side of the Island to hike and visit Pelican Bay, a gorgeous cove and site of a historic hotel that catered to holiday celebrities in the early 20th century. Finally, on Monday, we had a kayak tour of the Island s famous sea caves. Each night we had a festive happy hour followed by educational talks by Island experts including our own participants who came with a wealth of knowledge and related professional backgrounds, including anthropology and marine and park biology. We were especially grateful for the time the kayak guide, Tony Chapman, spent with us. In the evenings, he joined our happy hours to talk and answer questions. Tony has been guiding kayak tours on the Island for almost 30 years. He has a wealth of knowledge about Island history, geology, sea life, plant life, restoration efforts and more. This trip had a waiting list almost as long as the participant list. If you are interested in joining us next year, be sure to sign up early!
