Unlike most mitigation land that has no value of any kind, this Calabasas acreage is located within the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area. This area, managed by the National Park Service, is comprised of thousands and thousands of acres of existing conservation land, open space land and parks. Multiple conservancies in addition to The State and Federal park systems own land in the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area and there is a continuing effort to have any undeveloped land within its boundaries set aside and preserved. This acres is designated by the National Park Service as Other land within the authorized park boundary. Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) The entire area of 54,095 acres is the largest urban national park in the US. The total area is made up of multiple individual parks and open space preserves. Although overall administration of the SMMNRA is by the National Park system, ownership of the land itself is divided among the National Park Service, the California State Park System, local agency parks and university study reserves. Efforts to preserve the area began in the early 900 s with some of the parks within the current boundary of SMMRNA established in the 30 s and 40s. The park area overall boasts of having one of the highest densities of archeological resources of any mountain range in the world.
