Delegates will be able to park on campus on Saturday and Sunday (not Monday). The closest car parks are indicated on map 1. Travel information Galway is situated on the west coast of Ireland and may be easily reached by air, ferry, train, bus or car or a combination of these. As a major tourist attraction, there are many well- developed transport options available. There are two airports in the western region (Knock & Shannon) and Dublin airport is approximately 2.5 hours from Galway (Map 2). Ferry ports include Dublin Port, Dun Laoghaire, Larne, Belfast and Rosslare (Map 2). 1

Field sites & diving Porcupine Field Trip There will be two organised trips, one to a boulder shore and the other to a bedrock rocky shore. Corranroo, Co. Galway.

3 Field sites & diving Porcupine Field Trip There will be two organised trips, one to a boulder shore and the other to a bedrock rocky shore. Corranroo, Co. Galway. One will be to a boulder shore at Corranroo on the south coast of Galway Bay, near Kinvara on st Monday 31 of March. Corranroo is located near the Burren, a famous karst landscape in the west of Ireland made of limestone pavements. Dogs Bay, Co. Galway Dogs Bay is one of two beaches that back onto This is good bedrock rocky shore, with plenty of Lithothamnion- lined rock pools containing some Paracentrotus lividus. Dog s Bay is the only foraminiferan beach in the northern hemisphere and the beach is stunning. Field&site& If you wish to travel to either site by coach, this will cost 10 ( 8). In the interest of the environment, it is advisable that people take the bus. Corranroo is not easy to find and there is limited parking. Suggested locations for independent field trips There are many fantastic shores in the local area. Depending on what you are looking for, some are better than others. Connemara is an area west of Lough Corrib and Galway City (north of Galway Bay) and comprises many granite shores. The Burren is a karst region in north Co. Clare (south of Galway 3

4 Bay) and comprises some excellent limestone shores many of which support abundant populations of Paracentrotus lividus living in eroded pockets in the limestone. The following is a sample of some of the shores in the area: Diving Barna, near Galway City, Co. Galway ( N, W), good boulder shore near the city Muighinis Island, near Carna, Connemara, Co. Galway ( N, W), good bedrock rocky shore, rock pools, boulder shore Coral strand, near Carraroe, Connemara, Co. Galway ( N, W), maerl beach with nice bedrock rocky shore Coral strand, near Ballyconneeley, Connemara, Co Galway ( N, W), maerl beach Black Head, near Ballyvaughan, Burren, Co. Clare ( N, W), limestone rocky shore Spanish Point, near Miltown Malbay, Burren, Co. Clare ( N, W), limestone rocky shore with urchin pockets Kilkee, Co. Clare ( N, W), Fantastic rocky shore with large pools for snorkelling. Anemone heaven. There will not be any official dive trips organized as part of the conference.
