Tertiary Economic Activity Providing services for people.
Tertiary Economic Activities Tertiary economic activity involves providing services for people. In wealthy countries there are lots of people employed in service industries. In poor countries fewer people are employed in service industries. Most people are engaged in primary economic activity. Q. Why do you think this difference exists? Q. Make a list of jobs that people in Tertiary economic activity do.
Distribution Transport, Communication Radio, TV, Newspapers Administration Office staff Financial Banks, Credit Union Personal Dentist, Doctor, Barber Services Business Advertising, Accountancy Repair Mechanic, IT Technician Tourism/Leisure Golf caddy Hotel staff Construction Carpenter, plumber Teleservices 11811, Customer support
Tourism Tourism is a good example of a tertiary economic activity. It is a service based industry. Most people employed in tourism work in services. Q. Think about your last holiday. From the moment you left your house until you returned home, identify all the different services that people performed for you. Tourists tend to go to different types of places. 4 main categories are; 1. Areas of natural beauty 2. Beaches and coastlines 3. Recreational & Sporting facilities 4. Cities
Ireland s Areas of Natural Beauty Connemara Glendalough Killarney Errigal
Ireland s Beaches and Coastlines Aran Islands Cliffs of Moher Giants Causeway Dingle
Ireland s Recreational & Sporting facilities Croke Park The K Club Shannon Fishing Aviva Stadium
Ireland: City Breaks Cork City Galway City Dublin City Temple Bar
Tourism A World-wide Activity
Tourism in Ireland Tourism is an important part of the Irish economy. In 2011, 6.3 million tourists visited Ireland, adding 4 billion to the economy. There are 141,000 people employed in the tourism sector. Q. Where did most of these tourists come from? Q. Why do many American tourists visit Ireland?
Tourism in Ireland Ireland is easily accessible as a tourist destination. Tourists can fly into Ireland. Ferries also come from Scotland, England and France. This is popular for people who want to bring their own cars.
Why do Tourists visit Ireland? Natural Beauty The Giant s Causeway, Killarney National Park, Glendalough, Connemara. Beaches & Coastlines The Cliffs of Moher, Dingle Peninsula, beaches around the coastline. Recreation & Sports Fishing lakes, boating on the River Shannon, Golfing, International rugby and soccer matches at Croke Park. Cities Many people visit cities like Dublin for short weekend breaks. They visit the museums, theatres, art galleries, and other historic buildings.
Tourism in Co. Clare Co. Clare is a popular destination for many people who visit Ireland. Tourism brings lots of money to the economy of the county. Many people are employed in the tourist industry. Q. Why do people visit Co.Clare? 1. It is a centre of traditional Irish music. 2. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park show medieval life in Ireland. 3. The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, surfing at Lahinch.
Tourism in Co. Clare
Q. Identify 4 tourist attractions shown on the map.
Money brought into the area tourists spend on accommodation, food and activities ADVANTAGES OF TOURISM
Facilities can be developed that local people can also use. These may not have been built without tourist numbers coming to an area eg Aquadome, Tralee, Tayto Park, Meath
New roads, railways can be built to allow tourists to travel more freely. Eg.new road around Slea Head, Co. Kerry Local airports can be used to gain access to tourist areas. Eg Knock Airport.
DISADVANTAGES OF TOURISM Litter and rubbish can be left in scenic beach areas, This causes pollution. Beaches can become polluted and dangerous for swimming and water sports Rubbish can be left in mountaineous areas due to too many tourists visiting the area and not enough bins being provided. This can deter visitors from visiting certain places in Ireland Noise pollution can disturb families and destroy a holiday. Many holiday camp areas have deadline after which loud music cannot be played
Land in tourist areas tends to be higher in price. This means that if a site comes up for sale, locals may not be able to afford it and a holiday company may buy it. Sometimes locals can resent the change over of land from agriculture to tourism.
Over crowding can lead to a shortage of facilities in an area when they are not increased to cope with the greater numbers of tourists. This can apply to transport, shopping areas and recreation facilities

Tourism in the South of France There are two main tourist regions in the South of France. The Cote d Azur, east of Marseille. Languedoc, west of the Rhone estuary.
Tourism in the South of France The South of France is popular with both French people and tourists from other countries. Why is the South of France so popular? It has a Mediterranean climate, with warm dry summers. It has a rich culture with many examples of Roman civilization. It is easily accessible by road, rail, and air travel. There are lots of tourist resorts in Monte Carlo, Cannes, and Nice.

The importance of tourism to the Swiss economy. Tourism brings many benefits to the Swiss economy. It provides year round employment, unlike most Mediterranean resorts. It brings foreign currency to the country as tourists spend money in hotels, restaurants, and shops. It prevents out migration from small mountain villages.
