Next PHNA Board Meeting The next Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association Board Meeting is Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Howson Branch Library. The meeting is open to anyone. Find out how the PHNA Board is working to improve and maintain our neighborhood! DON'T FORGET! GARDEN and ART POP-UPS in the HOOD Sunday, May 3rd Noon until 4 p.m. in Pemberton Heights Free, and open only to residents of Pemberton Heights and their guests Enjoy a spring afternoon outdoors visiting with our neighbors! 2515 Harris Boulevard 1405 Wathen Avenue 2822 Wooldridge Drive 1600 Preston Avenue 1503 Preston Avenue 1512 Gaston Avenue and Bark on Stark (dog meet-and-greet) on the corner of Stark Place and Wooldridge Drive, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The mission of this event is to know our neighbors and to celebrate imagination and creativity while enjoying our outdoor spaces in Pemberton Heights. Organized by Loretta@nfainc.com; Phone: New Neighborhood Tradition: Sunday Socials When: The second and fourth Sunday of every month, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (Sunday Social will be May 10th and May 24th this month.) What it is: An afternoon/evening to get outside the house, take a walk in the neighborhood or sit on the front porch, and chat with your neighbors! Why: Walking in the neighborhood and maintaining a visible presence outside the house helps promote neighborhood safety and unity. More people out walking and on their front porches means more eyes on the street, and bolsters neighborhood pride and social connection/interaction. How: This is a very casual event and there is no set meeting place. Just get outside and walk, or sit on your front porch with a glass of wine or iced tea and wave at your neighbors! 2 The Pemberton Journal - May 2015 Copyright 2015 Peel, Inc.

3 REMINDER STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD! As springtime comes into full swing, please remember to drive cautiously, particularly around school buses. It is illegal to pass any school bus that is stopped and operating a visual signal either flashing red lights or a stop sign. Additionally, a driver traveling in either direction must stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped and operating a visual signal, and may not proceed until one of the following occurs: the school bus resumes motion; the operator is signaled by the bus driver to proceed; or the visual signal is no longer activated. Please be aware, and also advise your teenage drivers to ensure they follow the law in this respect. Take care, be neighborly, and make safety a priority! Copyright 2015 Peel, Inc. 4 What s Going on at The Trail? If I were to poll my Pemberton neighbors, I am sure that many would agree that easy access to the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail is a large part of what makes living in this neighborhood such a wonderful experience. Many residents are passionate Trail users and supporters. The Trail is the heart of Austin. It is a lush, urban path that meanders along the water s edge and passes by skyscrapers, neighborhoods, ball fields and cultural attractions. As the city s most recognized and popular recreation area, the 10-mile Trail is visited more than 1.5 million times each year. Trail users come from all over the city; in fact, the average distance people travel to the Trail is 6.75 miles. The Trail is critical to Austin s economy as both an important factor in attracting and retaining employees and as a key factor in Austinites quality of life. There have been some significant changes at the Trail over the past few years. Most notably is the 1.1 mile partially over-the-water and over-land Boardwalk that bridges the gap between east and west Austin, and finally completed the 10 mile loop. The Boardwalk is accessible from behind the Austin- American Statesman building on the west side, or by parking on South Lakeshore Boulevard on the east side of I-35. The Boardwalk is a great place to meander with out of town visitors, and is ADA accessible. Users are rewarded with fabulous city views and plenty of excellent photo opportunities. Another recent milestone was the celebration of the 'first flush' and ribbon-cutting of the new Heron Creek Restrooms. These new restrooms replace the leaner on the north side of the Trail between the Mopac trailhead and the Lamar pedestrian bridge. And thanks to 21 volunteers, 500 saplings - pecan, cedar elm, chinkapin oak, bald cypress, burr oak, beautyberry, red buckeye, Texas redbud, mexican plum, and anacacho orchid - were planted along Lakeshore Boulevard as part of a Healthy Trees for the Trail initiative. What s next? Later this year, construction with begin on the Lakeshore Park Rain Meadow. The plan for this park By Asher Flynn space just to the east of the Boardwalk landing is the next phase in the Southeast Shore Park and Trail Master Plan. Lakeshore Park will be a multi-phased project with the first phase including exercise and stretching equipment and tree groves to shade the sunny Boardwalk Trailhead. Additionally, the Eastside Trail Bridge and Trail relocation will open this spring, providing a safe and continuous lakefront Trail between the Boardwalk and the hostel along Lakeshore Boulevard. And soon to commence is a fiveyear, Trail-wide ecological restoration and conservation project. This work is critical to the health of the Trail, protecting the ecosystem and wildlife habitats for future generations. Next on the planning agenda is the design and assessment for the Trail Bridge at Congress Avenue. The new bridge will replace the rickety, old and dangerously narrow wooden bridge that runs on the north side of the lake under Congress Avenue. The new design will include an overlook to allow Trail users to safely pull off the Trail to take in the views. How are these improvements made possible? Since its formation in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Trail Foundation (TTF) has worked tirelessly to fulfill its mission to protect and enhance the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake. TTF has fulfilled its mission through careful improvements to the Trail s infrastructure and environment. In a distinctively collaborative effort, TTF works in cooperation with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department to close the gap between what the city can provide and what the Trail deserves. The popular Boardwalk and other projects mentioned above are a direct result of this unique partnership. To learn more about The Trail Foundation and support the Trail, visit Learn more, donate or become a member to help TTF continue its efforts to preserve, protect, and enhance The Trail we all care so much about. Call today for more info Or visit our website at: FORMOSAN TERMITES There are three main types of termites that can cause problems for homeowners in Central Texas- native subterranean termites, formosan subterranean termites and drywood termites. This article will focus of formosan termites. Formosan termites are a more voracious type of subterranean termite. These termites have been spread throughout Texas through transport of infested material or soil. Formosan termites build carton nests that allow them to survive above ground without contact with the soil. Nests are often located in hollow spaces, such as wall voids. Formosan subterranean termite workers and soldiers. Formosan termites feed on a wider variety of cellulose than other subterranean termites, including live plants, consuming both spring and summer growth wood whereas native subterranean termites feed only on spring growth. Formosan termites have also been known to chew through non-cellulose materials such as soft metals, plaster or plastic. The type of termite is determined by using soldiers (the group that defends the colony) or alates (winged reproductives) for identification. Formosan termite soldiers have a hardened head capsule that is tear-drop shaped. The alates have two heavy veins on the leading edge of the front wing along with hairs on the wings. If you suspect termites, you can submit sample insects to me for identification. Treatment would need to be carried out by a profession pest management company.
