1 Infosheet 2012 Kuzikus is a traditionally game-rich part of the Kalahari that was developed into a wildlife reserve with lodge and today enjoys the status of a private game sanctuary which is accredited by the Namibian State. For the past 30 years as a family business, we have been able to combine tourism, education and research directly with conservation projects. Thereby we strive to conserve aspects of ecological integrity in the Kalahari ecosystem. Offering only 5 guestrooms (4 double one single) creates the luxury of space and privacy. Our guests experience the Kalahari ecosystem on a very individual basis and have plenty of opportunities for activities, to relax and to gain first hands insights into research and conservation projects in tailor-made programs guided by members of the host family. Visiting us at Kuzikus also supports us in running the governmental Black Rhino Conservation project on the reserve.

2 KUZIKUS A WILDLIFE RESERVE Since 30 years Kuzikus is involved in conservation projects. Today the main attraction on Kuzikus are over 2500 heads of more than 20 different larger animal species such as eland, kudu, oryx, hartebeest, black rhino, brindled gnu, black wildebeest, blesbock, springbok, steenbok, duiker, impala, zebra, ostrich and giraffe. Smaller species such as the Pangolin, Antbear, Aardwolf, Bat-eared fox as well as an abundance of birds (over 100 species) and fascinating reptiles, spiders and insects are likewise native to this area. The flora of Kuzikus also holds many secrets (inventory lists and documentation of flora and fauna are available at the lodge). Kuzikus is one of the few private Wildlife Reserves in Namibia which was selected by the government to take part in the national Custodian Black Rhino Project in order to protect the critically endangered Black rhino from extinction. Therefore in 1997, six black rhinos were reinstated into their original habitat on Kuzikus land. Eight calves were born since and visitors today, not only have the unique chance to witness the black rhino in its natural habitat, but also learn first hand more about the custodian project. In close cooperation with environmental protection efforts we endeavour to preserve aspects of unspoilt Africa.

3 KUZIKUS AN INDIVIDUAL NATURE EXPERIENCE The experience of discovering the opulent fauna & flora in Kuzikus is especially impressive as you are not bound to a set schedule and have the freedom to explore the reserve not only by vehicle (with guide) but also on horseback or by foot (with or without an accompanying tracker). The opportunity to be out on foot gives you the direct contact with the Kalahari wilderness and all its magic. Being in the familiar atmosphere of the host family you will get an impression of what it means to live on the edge of the Kalahari to run a wildlife reserve and lodge. Learn about the necessary infrastructure (wildlife management, water, sewage, power, guest operations, communication etc.) as well as the reintroduction and conservation of endangered species, and experience what it takes to establish an integrated nature conservation concept on a day-to-day basis. The 3-day Kalahari Excursion is highly recommended. As wildlife is abundant around the lodge and the nearby water points there will be plenty of opportunities to make spectacular observations and photographs directly from the lodge. Your stay on Kuzikus is a direct contribution towards the national Black Rhino conservation project and supports Biological Research projects in Kuzikus (BRinK)

4 KUZIKUS - A GUEST LODGE Its excellent accommodation (4 double rooms, 1 single room with ensuite bath), lovely swimming pool, fine cuisine, recreational and leisure facilities and interesting programme has gained KUZIKUS the highest award of the top three star award by the Hotel Association of Namibia. We try and place reservations so that you have the lodge to yourself. In this way we can not only ensure an individual service, but also give you the chance to experience maximum tranquillity. Prices include not only the room and en-suite bathroom, but a healthy breakfast with bread, cold meats, eggs, cereals, fruit salad, good coffee and selection of teas, a most satisfying lunch, and an elegant 3-course dinner. In addition we offer coffee and homemade cake in the afternoons. We value direct contact, individual service and private atmosphere. ACTIVITIES We offer game drives in an open-roof Landrover and tracking with bushmen. You can further gain insights into biological field research or join us for evening presentations about scientific projects conducted on Kuzikus (seasonal). We furthermore offer wilderess horseback rides into the Kalahari and Kalahari Excursions. KALAHARI EXCURSION An important part of a safari is getting to know the african nature and wildlife. Many tourists visit National Parks where it is prohibited to leave the vehicle. Visitors are therefore forced into the passive role of the observer. Our Kalahari Excursion attempts to show the deeper connections present in nature. You learn more about animal behaviour, different habitats and social structures in the various species. It deems us

5 important that you move through nature on foot to feel the heat, cold and dryness, to experience how tiresome a march in the deep Kalahari sand can be, avoiding thorn bushes and still keeping your eyes on an animal track. We will show you how you can hear, see and smell more through correct conduct in nature. Thirty years of experience on our wildlife reserve, as well as the competent knowledge of biologists in our family make this course interesting. Older bushmen accompany you, willing to share their unprecedented wisdom and knowledge of nature. Excursions can be booked on site either as half-day trips focusing of specific topics such as botany, entomology, ornithology, wildlife management or tracking or as a 3 a day venture taking a more holistic approach for discovering the Kalahari. HORSEBACK RIDING We have very good riding horses (7) for guests up to 120 kg. Beginners and advanced riders have the opportunity to take riding lessons from a qualified teacher. Especially our wilderness horseback rides are an unique experience as the smell of the horse is stronger than that of the human, meaning one can often ride in unusual close proximity to the game. SAFARIS As we have had the experience that many guests arrive with clear ideas of what they want to see, but have no detailed information on how these might be accomplished we gladly assist you with your further travel plans for Namibia. DIRECTION You can reach KUZIKUS via the tarmac road C23 to Dordabis. At Dordabis the tarmac road ends and you travel the next 90 km on a good dirt road. At the junction to Leonardville leave the C23 and drive 1 km on the 51 (Be careful! Very sharp left bend), now take a right to the D1423 and travel another

6 15km until you come to a sign post KUZIKUS, follow sign posts. A small farm road will lead you to KUZIKUS after about 15 km. The total distance to KUZIKUS from Windhoek City and the international airport about 180km and a 150km, respectively. Via private plane the journey takes 45 min/90 miles, course 132mag from Windhoek Eros, runway 14/ m (4400ft), firm dirt runway.
