New volunteers are always welcome! Please call Liz at by Liz Scremin hear the wind moan in the bright diamond sky This tune has been with me all week, since the service for John Clarke. In the image on the film, he is high on a ridgetop, glissading joyfully down a snowy slope, with his trademark white dress shirt and white tossled hair. His spirit is singing; he is in his element. And that is how I want to remember him. I never had the honour of doing a trip with John. Such a shame. When my mother died in November 2001, somehow he heard. He sent me a card with his condolences and offered to take me for a walk to some special place he knew in the North Shore forest. Oh, in my sadness, I never took him up on it. Something I regret. Time doesn t wait. Each season is precious. Each year is marked by the trips that you did, the cherished photos, the ticks in the guidebook. John had so many wonderful experiences during his life and so much energy to share. He Letter From the Chair The Mountains Are Waiting was so positive, so unerring, so serene. He accomplished so much and yet there was so much more for him to do. I wonder would he ever have run out of mountains? No. Even the smallest, most far-flung place captured his imagination. We should all go and buy a map in his memory, and trace lines along the divides. Then go and revel in the beauty of the place, to try and see it through his eyes. He will be there. This summer, I hear, there is a plan to build a cairn in his memory with stones engraved with messages. John s family will scatter his ashes there. Earth, wind and water. How wonderful to carry the messages to the four corners of the earth and into the future in this way. From our perspective, the mountains are eternal, and many are imbued with personality. They are our spiritual home. And so, they are waiting for us to return. Farewell, John, and thank you for being such an inspiration. We will miss you. 4 Environmental Educator,, Conservationist and Mountaineer, John Clarke Passes Away at 57 from Press Release by the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation. John Clarke, one of BC s leading conservationists, environmental educators, and mountaineers, died at Vancouver General Hospital on January 23, 2003, following a long struggle with cancer. John s love of BC s wild places began while studying geography at UBC in the 1960s. He recognized that much of BC s rugged coastal mountains were still unexplored. For the next 35 years, he systematically climbed 10,000 square kilometres of Coast Range peaks, glaciers and valleys. On trips of up to six weeks, many of them solo, John photographed and documented wildlife, rain forests and First Nations villages. He published accounts of his explorations in alpine journals which gained the notice of the mountaineering community. In 1987 he was made an Honourary Life Member of the Alpine Club of Canada in recognition of his extraordinary mountaineering career. Over the years John became increasingly concerned by the impact of development, particularly logging, on wilderness and wildlife habitat. He was deeply affected in 1994 by the death of fellow mountaineer and conservationist Randy Stoltmann who a month earlier proposed a plan for protecting 260,000-hectares of wilderness 150 km northwest of Vancouver. The environmental community subsequently named the area the Randy Stoltmann Wilderness. In 1995 John saw the need for wilderness education in elementary and secondary schools. He created multi-media visual presentations which he showed at hundreds of venues across BC. A year later he co-founded the Wilderness Education Program and developed slide presentations, wilderness hikes and curriculum Photo by Lisa Baile workshops that introduced thousands of Vancouver school children to their first direct experience of BC wilderness. When speaking to young children, John would set up his tent in the classroom so they could handle his crampons and ice axe, and see artifacts such as a tuna can chewed flat by a hungry grizzly bear! His natural humour and enthusiasm made him a particularly effective educator. In the summer of 1997 John developed a unique partnership with the Squamish First Nation that expanded into the Witness Project. Being called to witness is an honour in the Coast Salish tradition. The Witness Project enabled thousands of city dwellers to witness threatened habitat in the Stoltmann Wilderness. The Squamish Nation awarded John the rare honour of a traditional naming ceremony in which he was given the Squamish name of Xwexwsélken, or Mountain Goat. In 1999 John organized a series of community presentations as part of SPEC s campaign to stop logging in Greater Vancouver s North Shore watersheds. His presentations were crucial in raising public awareness that eventually resulted in the GVRD abandoning commercial logging in the region s Watershed Management Plan. The general public first learned of John s remarkable climbing accomplishments with the 1995 release of Bill Noble s film Child of the Wind, which earned first prize at the Banff International Mountain Film Festival. In 1999 John received the BC Minister s Award for Environmental Education. In August, 2002, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada for his lifetime achievement in exploration of the Coast Range Mountains, and his contribution to conservation and wilderness education. John is survived by his wife Annette, oneyear-old son Nicholas, mother and father, sister Kathleen and brother Kevin. Memorial Service for John Clarke A Celebration of Life for John Clarke will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2003 from 6:30 to 9:00pm (doors open at 5:30pm) at the Centennial Theatre, 2300 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver. All are welcome to attend this special evening to share and remember. It will include speakers and slideshows celebrating all aspects of John's life. Tickets are $10 with all proceeds going to the Wilderness Education Program to carry on John's legacy. Tickets are available at the Centennial Theatre (604) (Visa/MC) and through Mountain Equipment Co-op. The film Child of the Wind will be available for sale with proceeds going to John's wife and son, Annette and Nicholas. Cards of condolences can be sent to Annette Clarke at 2496 W. 7th Ave., Vancouver, V6K 1Y4. The family has asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers. Suggested donations can be made to: 1. A trust fund now being set-up for John's son Nicholas. Information about that fund is available at Wilderness Education Program. As you may know, over the last few years John delivered presentations to about 30,000 school children and teachers. He also took many of them on backcountry outings up to a week. All of this was done through WEP. Others will be taking John's place so the program can continue. Donations to WEP can be made by sending a cheque to BC Spaces for Nature (WEP), 3116 W. 3rd Ave, Vancouver, BC., V6K 1N3. Please make sure you write "WEP" on the cheque. Avalanche Echoes 4

5 Tributes to John Clarke ( ) John Clarke was one of the great British Columbians of the twentieth century. He taught by example important and enduring lessons about how to live. As a witness to the changes wrought by humans on a landscape which had formerly seemed immutable, he was grieved, yet he went beyond observing and interpreting the world to his own inimitable attempt to change it. John Clarke was a mountain man of astounding skill and endurance, but he was also a warm and affectionate human being. His good humour drew out our own best instincts. He not only inspired us, but changed the outlook of many thousands of people, always for the better, and he left British Columbia and Canada richer for having passed through our lives. He was a human being who enhanced the global environment. How fortunate that John found satisfaction in building a family, even though it was near the end of his life. Many thousands of people who did not know John s family will be thinking, along with us, their condolences. Though we cannot replace a unique individual like John Clarke, we can emulate his example by following our own instincts to respect our environment and hoping they will lead us towards some of the high and wonderful places that John Clarke has seen. Tom Perry - Former Minister of Advanced Education, Science and Technology,Province of British Columbia Child of the Wind (music & lyrics by Bruce Cockburn) I love the pounding of hooves I love engines that roar I love the wild music of waves on the shore and the spiral perfection of a hawk when it soars love my sweet woman down to the core There s roads and there s roads and they call, can t you hear it? road of the earth and roads of the spirit the best roads of all are the ones that aren t certain one of those is where you ll find me till they drop the big curtain Refrain: Hear the wind moan in the bright diamond sky these mountains are waiting brown-green and dry I m too old for the term but I ll use it anyway I ll be a Child of the Wind till the end of my days Little round planet in a big Universe sometimes is looks blessed sometimes it looks cursed depends on what you look at obviously but even more it depends on the way that you see Refrain: Hear the wind moan in the bright diamond sky these mountains are waiting brown-green and dry I m too old for the term but I ll use it anyway I ll be a Child of the Wind till the end of my days the night we met you were carrying rocks brought from Sims Creek to Robson and Seymour to honour Randy Stoltmann one rock at a time carrying the weight setting them down so others could honour him and now we will take the weight and multiply you - Sandra Semeluk Adventure, exploration and discovery are important not only for themselvesbut for what they lead to. The fabric of an individual is molded through these processes. In John's case, his love of nature and discovery evolved to a point where he became a communicator of this love. He was an inspiration to others from what deeply inspired him. As mountaineers we all feel inspired when we are in the hills but few have the ability to imbue this to others. John did this exceptionally well with the enthusiasm and vigor that only John could muster, having the ability to touch all regardless of age. The Order of Canada served him well. 6 Rogers Pass South Camp Trip Report by Lesley Bohm I spent a wonderful week in August 2002 at the Rogers Pass South camp. When my knee cartilage gave out in June I tried to cancel, but no one wanted my place. Rob Brusse kindly encouraged me to go anyway as camprat and to paint, which I did. I was ecstatic when I managed to get up to the Asulkan cabin with no major trouble. What a gorgeous spot we The Swiss Guides from the Asulkan Glacier had perfect weather for those three days. I managed the snow school but didn t attempt the climbs, especially as the camp cold got me on the second night. The participants were a great group some even interested in all the wonderful flowers we passed and the amount of food organization by Rob was astounding. I managed a few hikes off and on between runny-nose and coughing stages up to Balu Pass where we caught the last of the Youngs Peak, Asulkan Glacier avalanche lilies on late snow, and paintbrush and alpine daisies against a backdrop of the mountains across the highway, and short trips up towards the Vaux Glacier and Abbott Ridge. Everyone else would return late and exhausted from 10 to 12-hour long mountain exploits. I was struck by the amount that the Asulkan Glacier has shrunk since my last visit 20 years ago! Many thanks for tolerating the ancient and infirm and to Rob for organizing a wonderful trip. 7 CASBC Receives Large Donation The Climbers Access Society of British Columbia (CASBC) is very pleased to announce that it has received a significant cash donation from the Edge Climbing Centre of North Vancouver, B.C. The gift will be in three annual installments of $5,000 each. The first cheque was presented to CASBC at its recent annual general meeting in Vancouver, by Edge co-owner Henry Wang. My partner Andrew Wilson and I are very impressed with the work CASBC has been doing for climbers, said Wang. They ve done a lot to protect climbers access in B.C. Our business is climbing-dependent, and we know our many members support what CASBC is doing. We re very happy to present CASBC with solid proof of the Edge s support, and we know that they ll do useful things with the money. CASBC president Anders Ourom said, This is the biggest unsolicited donation CASBC has ever received. CASBC has grown over the last year and expanded the range of its activities, so the money will be very useful. Projects for 2003 include a third toilet and signs at Skaha Bluffs, a comprehensive socio-economic survey of climbing and mountaineering in B.C., responding to government initiatives such as proposed use fees and cuts to park management, and simply responding to growth in climbing.
