3 letter from the chair by Liz Scremin Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue at Baker There are so many ways to enjoy the mountains. I love the satisfying crunch of a well-placed ice-axe and the joy of a great hand jamb on warm granite, the thrill of movement and the luxury of complete repose, the invigorating fresh air and all the fine views. There are days when I just have to go for the peak, and there are days when I m at peace hanging out in the meadows. Like many, I try to record my mountain memories on film. Most recently I ve brought a sketchbook along to jot down a few images in pencil and pen. It s fun. On the last weekend of September, I was in good company. Seven of us trooped down to Baker Lodge at the Mount Baker ski area for the ACC s 2nd Annual Watercolour Painting En Plein Air Workshop. Our objective wasn t to cover kilometers with our feet but simply to place brush to paper. Over three successive days, we explored the beauty and artistic potential of Picture Lake, Bagley Lake, and Artists Point. Oh, so aptly named! The colours of the fall foliage were wonderful; the mountain backdrops were amazing. Draped in glaciers, the perfect form of Mount Shuksan was an appealing subject. Twisted alpine firs, golden mountain ash, and brilliant red blueberry bushes attracted us too. Artist, Velvet Bailes, helped us to see the whole world around us. Through a series of demonstrations, we learned to paint wet in wet, build texture, layer glazes, use staining and non-staining pigments, and suggest form through the lost line technique. With individual attention and guidance, we learned to isolate a good composition from the myriad of possibilities around us. We encouraged each other. We laughed. We ate well. We reveled in the sunshine. In the evenings, we continued to share ideas. Velvet had brought along a number of books on mountain art. Looking at works by W.J. Phillips and Lawren Harris was very inspiring. Oh, so much to do, so many places, so little time! The workshop was in every way a success and I would encourage all ACC aspiring artists to consider attending. Just bring along your enthusiasm and curiosity, your paper, your brush, your burnt sienna and ultramarine blue. It s a little cold now to paint en plein air, but wait, we ll be doing it again next year too! (2003 Watercolour Painting En Plein Air Workshop: Lynn Erickson, Wanda Best, Carol Evenchick, Monica Hu, Jan Ebenstiner, Liz Scremin and Velvet Bailes) Trip Report Pinecone Lake - Finally: September 28th, 2003 On Sept 28 this year, I finally got to Pinecone Lake, which lies at the head of the new Pinecone Burke Provincial Park (between Garibaldi Park and Coquitlam). I had tried to get there before on a cloudy wet overnight camping trip in early summer a few years ago. Basically we couldn t see a thing above 3500 ft, and camped on snow. This trip was much more successful; it went as a joint ACC-BCMC outing on a stellar early fall day. After connecting with James Martin from Squamish, we proceeded up the Mamquam Forest Service Road. Evelyn Feller had been done the hike not too long ago, and so was familiar with the route, which was a relief to the rest of us, because we were going to depend on the maps to try and figure things out in that maze of logging roads. (Note: this is an earlier turn-off than the 103 Hikes description; we took a route to Knothole Lake rather than past November Lake.) We turned left off the main road just past Crawford Creek, and drove a bit further up the road till we got to the first road going left. One car, non-4x4, parked there, while the 4X4 driver thought he would try to get up the left spur as far as possible. It turned out that was only about a hundred feet before a 5 ft deep narrow water bar, impassible to all vehicles. We started walking along that spur, keeping left at the fork (where there is a very small sign-post with the initials KL for Knothole Lake on it); what you are doing is getting up to the ridge that goes to Knothole Lake. The walk along the logging road is hours (depending on how many stops are taken); then it s a steep 40 minutes up through forest and into sub-alpine meadows. Another half an hour to Knothole Lake, with spectacular views all around, and then another minutes to the peak above the Lake to get a view of Pinecone Lake, which lies about 1500 ft below (at a lower elevation than Knothole). By the time we got to the top of the peak beside Knothole to look down into Pinecone Lake, it was mid-afternoon; we made it back to the cars by A truly lovely, although long, hike with glorious fall colours and incredible views to the sea of mountains all around. Pinecone Lake is quite long about 2 km, and a striking blue colour, surrounded by small peaks a real gem in the Coast Range. Everyone expressed satisfaction at seeing such a beautiful sight, and felt the hard-earned view (4000 ft elevation gain) was well worth it. Participants: Tony Knight, Margaret Hanson, James Martin, Jim Grey, Steve Runth, Evelyn Feller (BCMC leader); Fern Hietkamp (ACC leader & reporter). Avalanche Echoes 3

4 North Face/ACC Summer Leadership Course 2003 by Paul Baker During the final week of the 2003 General Mountaineering Camp at Snowy Pass, I joined eight other ACC members from across the country to take part in The North Face/ACC Summer Leadership Course. We were there to.. learn guiding and people management skills in the mountain environment that we could take home and use on our local section trips. Our two instructors for the week were Cyril Shokoples and Helen Sovdat (both highly experienced ACMG mountain guides) who were assisted by Brad Harrison when he could break away from his formidable duties as the GMC s camp manager. The format of the course was a combination of skills and peak days. Skills days were used to learn about and practice short roping, placing protection, building anchors and rescue systems and discussing topics ranging from GPS navigation and radio communications to conflict resolution. These sessions generally took place close to base camp, while on the peak days we headed out into the surrounding mountains to put what we had learned to use under the watchful eyes of our instructors. On these trips we each took turns leading the others across glaciers, up snow and ice faces and along rocky ridges so that we could practice our leadership, routefinding and group management skills while climbing some spectacular peaks. Cyril and Helen proved to be excellent instructors and all of the participants appreciated their insightful comments and advice throughout the week. This course was an excellent learning opportunity, not only from the formal instruction, but also from the discussions among the participants. It was interesting to hear how the different club sections operate and to get new ideas to take back home. By the end of the week, we all felt that we were better prepared to plan and lead club trips, and ready to pass on some of our new found knowledge to other club members at home. Many thanks to the Vancouver section Executive for supporting my application to the Summer Leadership course. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in improving their mountain leadership skills (while having a lot of fun!) consider applying for either the 2004 Summer or Winter TNF/ACC Leadership Courses. Literary Tid-bits for Tentbound Days Mallory whole heartedly believed there was no dream that must not be dared; his life stretched to the very end. Perhaps, like him, we have no choice but to go back and dare our dreams. We had looked up at the vastness of the Eiger filled with a mixture of exultation and apprehension about what we were about to do in the morning. To me that is everything mountain climbing is about the outcome uncertain, the spirit subdued, the challenge open a free choice to take up or walk away from. More than anything it is about taking part not success or failure, simply being there and making a choice. There is about the mountain the beckoning silence of great height; a siren call that lures me back against my will. Excerpt from The Beckoning Silence Written by Joe Simpson; Published by Jonathan Cape, 2002 Page 284 Trip rip Report: Campbell Lake October 26 After we left the Wendy's parking lot minus two participants with a K9, following a short discussion, a great sunny day greeted us for a 5 hour hike near Harrison Hotsprings. The view points are few but the open forest and logbridges make this a wonderful late season hike ft of elevation. The real treat was the dip in the hot springs before returning home. Participants Herbert, Pam, Martin, Heather, Cheryl, Trish, the Roadrunner and Snow White; Trip leader, Tania. Avalanche Echoes 5

7 Leadership Development Weekend Report June 21-22, 2003 This summer the Vancouver Section offered a weekend workshop on leadership skills, focusing on group dynamics and management, decision-making, and individual leadership styles and areas for growth in short, the soft skills for leadership on club trips. The objectives of the weekend included having participants learn more about their own approach to leadership, learn from others, and to gain confidence in leading groups through scenarios. We spent the first day in group discussions and scenarios, followed by a relaxed BBQ under the trees near Lillooet Lake. On the second day, which dawned overcast and cool, we did a day-hike on a trail that led straight up from Lillooet Lake so it was steep, needless to say! Thankfully, we were required to stop every 45 minutes or so after a scenario had occurred, to debrief, get a snack, and get underway again. Rick Davies, who specializes in outdoor leadership development training led the weekend for us and set up the scenarios thanks to Rick for his great leadership and relaxed teaching style!. Mary Henderson generously hosted us at her house along the Lillooet Lake Road for the weekend, and provided a great pile of wood, from clearing their yard, for a BBQ! The person who came from furthest away Deren Sentesy (Vancouver Section member recently moved to Kelowna). There were thirteen of us in total in the course, and we received a lot of positive feedback. People really enjoyed the opportunity to talk about their leadership experience and challenges with each other, and to practice some leadership skills in a supportive environment. Thanks to the Vancouver Section for sponsoring part of the cost of the weekend. And a big thank-you to everyone who came out and helped to organize the weekend we hope you re out there practising what you learned, passing on your leadership skills, and leading trips with the club! Participants: Tara Parsons, Mary Henderson, Margaret Hanson, Tony Knight, Sue Baldwin, Zoran Vasic, Linda Bily, Raphael Tsen, Mike Dal Santo, Cheryl Alexander, Hans Burkhardt, Deren Sentesy, Fern Hietkamp (organizer and reporter).
