The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival is looking to create a board of directors for next years event. So far, it's been a one man show named Alan Formanek. Since the Festival is growing rapidly, Alan will need more help to organize this event. If you are interested, please contact Alan. THE RED TIT PROJECT The high mountain shelter that the club installed near the Dionne- Serratus col in the Tantalus Rangeover 25 years ago could use a new floor and caulking or a replacement with a new or borrowed shelter. With this year s Summer Camps scheduled to be in the area the timing is good for an over-haul that may be as simple as replacing the floor or as dreamy as building a whole new stone walled, steel roofed structure. This project should have progressed as far as a written, detailed proposal by January 15, Time will be required for approvals and funding applications if the structure is to be in place by July for summer camps. I need help on this. I would appreciate any opinions or assistance. Please phone me, Blair Mitten, at or at mitma@bc.sympatico.ca. CLASSIFIEDS Claire Paisley (from Wales); is looking for a hiking/climbing partner while on business at UBC between late September and December. She may be reached at Claire.Paisley@wales.gsi.gov.uk John Grant, ACC member, will be traveling in Pakistan, India, Nepal, etc until January Anybody else in the area at the time is welcome to contact me at geeman53@hotmail.com. Pieps avalanche transceivers are available for rental to club members. Call Chris Bradley or Susan Hollenberg to reserve. 3 TRIP REPORTS North Twin Sister - June 19, 1999 We met most of the gang at the Wendy s on Grandview Hwy early on as soggy Saturday morning. Two keeners (Ben and Jason) cycled from Point Grey. We picked up another intrepid cyclist, long distance guru Shu Oshika, at the Brunette overpass, then headed on down to cross the line at Sumas. We arrived at the gated bridge across the Middle Fork of the Nooksack River at about 8 am and started cranking up the long steady grind (with a bit of bike pushing involved it s a steep grade). The first 4 km of road was very well maintained as it is used to access the quarry, then we turned off onto an overgrown road that had reverted to single track in sections; there was an easy creek crossing part way along. After about 8.5 km we left the bikes and headed up a spur road through the clear-cut which accesses both the west ridge and north face. We encountered snow on the last little bit of this road, and continued on up on continuous snow through the clearcut and forest and into the large basin below the north face of the peak. Although it wasn t raining it was pretty moist and misty, so we elected to abandon the rocky west ridge and take the snow route up the north face. After lunching on the summit and enjoying the (non-existent) view, we slid back down the snow, jogged down the road to the bikes and put the cycling shoes back on. Then it was an effortless half hour peddle and glide back down the road. I have done this trip on foot and that road gets awfully long and your toes get awfully sore from banging into the front of your boots. On a bicycle it s a real hoot. Shu was given a wide berth as he powered down the road with his extra long ice axe stuck sideways on the rear carrier. On the trip were: Jason Addy, Ben, Colin Evans, Dave McClung, Shu Oshika, Lyle Agar, John Sapac, Herman, Helen Habgood (reporter) sorry anybody if I forgot you!! Access: Cross the border at Sumas and continue south to the Mt. Baker Hwy at Kendall; turn right (towards Bellingham) and continue until you reach the Mosquito Lake road at the Welcome grocery store, where you turn left (south). Follow Mosquito Lake road for 7km, then turn left onto Forest Service Road #38 (gravel, brown sign about 70 m down road). Go 8 km on Road #38 to a right turn down to the river (about 500m past a concrete bridge on the FS road), then another 500m down to the bridge across Nooksack River, with gate (where we parked & started cycling). Do not go through any more gates at the first intersection go left, past new logging. (If you are following the directions in Becky s guide, he does not mention the left turn at the second gate, otherwise his directions are good.) From the river it is 4 km up the main road to the turnoff to the right (go past the quarry road turnoff on left). Then go along a rough logging road which becomes partly overgrown, cross a creek, at an intersection go left, keeping the mountain on your left, for a total of another 4.5 km. Then walk another 2.5 km up a logging spur to reach the west ridge trail. ACC Executive Positions available A number of executive positions have been vacated and desperately need to be filled. Positions available are: Chair, Membership, Climbing, and Program. It takes your volunteeer energy to keep us going. Ask not what your club can do for you, but... To volunteer, please call Irene Golstone at , or speak to any other member of the executive. Summer Camps Next year's joint Vancouver Section/BCMC Tantalus Camp will be held 22 to 29 July, The dates are not confirmed ( the cabin is not yet booked). Tami Knight will be organizing the ACC end of it, and Peter Woodsworth will do the BCMC end. Peter will, however, hold the Master List, and so folks will ultimately have to contact him.this camp will be similar in scope & flavour to this year s camp. Maximum 15 participants. If interested call Tami ( ) or Peter ( ). (Please don't call after 10 pm) The Girls Kick Ass Alpine Climbing Camp is scheduled to be held in the Tantalus area, tentative dates are 16 to 22 July, This camp will be open to young women aged 15 to 21. The plan is to have a full guide along but to also teach the kids to be self sufficient in the mountains. This camp is not for rank beginners, but rather for young women with rock climbing or hiking background who wish to get into mountaineering. Interested persons can contact Tami Knight ( ). 4 OBITUARY - MARY FALLIS We, ACCer s, have lost one of our best! Mary Fallis, super-teacher for olds and youngs; naturalist; photographer; ACC 50-year member; Canadian book reviewer; great friend of all Halloween small gremlins and goblins. She was a contriver of appreciated blessings for humans and non-human Earth creatures; a promoter of the English language s rich and vibrant evolution and outstanding presence, which made life exciting for her and which she used so skillfully to provide insights for the rest of us. She dealt all Aces! Mary put her time and talents into many ACC projects archives, book restoration and library furtherance; she put in several season s work as Photographic Chairman of Vancouver Section photo competitions in the early 1950 s, and for Main Club b/w and colour competitions 1954 to In all, Mary attended and took active part in 14 ACC Camp outings, 13 in the Rockies and the Centennial in the Yukon. She loved Canada, its North and its Northerners with several study trips into Inuit areas. She was enthralled by the CONSERVATION UPDATE vastness and the natural splendour; however Mary s affinity for the ACC and primary Section life stayed in her mind and heart always. No doubt about it the workbees needed her blueberry pies baked right up on Mt. Seymour! Then too let s not forget that thoughtful handful of Iron Rations when she s see you were deadbeat on a long hike! Happy wildflowers to you, Mary, and thank you for the 87 great years we lucky humans had the great good fortune to have you climbing alongside. MvZ Three ski resorts have been advocated for many years including one at Garibaldi and one on the Jumbo Glacier. But the area which to me is frighteningly ominous is Al Raine s baby up Melvin Creek. Mr. Raine is an affable, middle aged sort of guy with a genial sense of humor. The husband of the Olympic darling, Nancy Green, Al Raine has dedicated much of the past decade to establishing a ski resort in an area of classic ski runs, shiny mountains, turquoise lakes and atrisk wildlife. Too bad, eh? The highway will have to be modified of course, to accommodate the SUV traffic. The usual resort paraphernalia will accompany the development: hotels, malls, gas stations and Ultimate Reality arcades. The trouble is that everyone seems to say, Hey, this is great! How soon s it gonna open? So much for the stewardship of the wild. The Cayoosh Ski Resort would be a destination resort - mostly for foreigners who will spend several days or several weeks at the resort. This seems to me of little benefit for Lillooet, whose logging economy is desperate and whose population could benefit by a tourist industry. A dismal prospect. Dismal for the mountain goats who have special rights to this area. Sad for the voles and marmots whose homes will be flooded by the damming of the lake levels. Confusing for the bears and deer for whom this is a corridor, and death to the fragile alpine environment. Al s research has been as thorough as it has been extensive. Thanks to the bickering and the intense amount of government red tape, Mr. Raine has not been given the clear OK. Yet. It seems like it will happen sooner or later. On a more positive note, perhaps the new Cayoosh Ski Resort will be better managed and won t make the mistakes that other projects have made. Perhaps petitions and lobby groups will collaborate to prevent the development of adjacent valleys. Nevertheless, when I ski off the summit of Mt Cayoosh this winter, I will still revel as I do every year in the untracked snow, the jagged silhouette of mountains and trees and marble ice that glint off the moon. And I will surely shed a tear. Jane Weller PERSONALITIES Best wishes to Henry Czenczek as he establishes a new home in Ladysmith this fall. May offers of pick-ups and drop-offs at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal abound! Best wishes also to Colin Evans who's moving to Santiago, Chile, for about 2 years, to open a new office for Creo Products Inc. Buena onda, Colin! Conservation Chair, Jane Weller,! had a very successful trip this past spring to Bolivia and Peru; climbing six 6000m peaks. However, she just recently managed to break her ankle on Baby Munday. What a klutz! Get well soon! Chairperson, Irene Goldstone, spent two weeks this summer exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Northeast Alaska. Dancing with caribou, muskox and sheep, Irene? Past treasurer, Diane Miller, is going to Uganda in late October, on a medical... Should be fascinating! World travellers, Ed and Maria Gunkel, are off once again to Nepal in October. This must be their 9 th or 10 th trip? Last time Daulagiri; this time Khumbu region. Have fun! Also best wishes to peak bagger Graham Rowbotham who is presently climbing in the Langtang region of Nepal. Avalanche Echoes 4

5 ACC Grants Available ACC NEEDS YOUR HELP! The Alpine Club of Canada has four special funds set aside to provide annual mountaineering-related financial grants to applicants who meet certain selection criteria. The annual grant $s are equivalent to the investment income from the built-up principal in the funds - principal that has accumulated from generous donations made over the years by members and others with an interest in mountaineering. The four ACC grant funds (and the approximate grant $'s available annually) are: 1.The Endowment Fund - for projects which support the goals and objectives of the ACC ($13,000). The annual grant application deadline is Feb The Environment Fund - for projects which support the environmental objectives of the ACC ($2,700). The annual grant application deadline is Jan The Colpitts Fund - to provide financial support to aspiring teens to attend the national ACC summer youth mountaineering camps ($600). The annual grant application deadline is May The Higgins Fund - to promote alpine-related outdoor pursuits undertaken independently by young women ($4,500). The annual grant application deadline is Jan. 31. In an effort better publicize the availability of grants from these funds, upcoming issues of The Gazette and other selected publications will advertise the ACC grants. We also need your help to spread the word! Specifically, we would like you to supply us with the names and contact information (organization, address etc.) of any individuals in your community who may be involved with a potentially interested group, such as a university outdoor club or youth group. Please send this information to our Office Manager, Ginette Timmerman (ph: , gtimmerm@telusplanet.net) as soon as possible. We will do the rest, by writing them to request that they make people in their group aware of the information we will send them. The ACC has much to be proud of, and lots of successes to share with others. With your help, we can get the ACC word out to a much broader community. Thanks! Bruce Keith, Executive Director The Alpine Club of Canada Tel: Fax: UPDATE ON THE WILDERNESS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Wilderness Education Program (WEP) owes much of its success to the generous and continued support of many members of the mountaineering community. We d like to share with some of WEP's achievements, and our plans for this school year. Since WEP began three years ago almost 20,000 students and teachers in BC have attended John Clarke s informative and entertaining talks and slide shows! Over 1200 students have taken part in field trips to local wilderness areas, where John brings wilderness live to the classroom.. John has also provided over 15 workshops at teachers professional development days, and has been a popular speaker at the BC Science Teachers annual conference. Besides terrific feedback from students and teachers, WEP has also been formally recognized for excellence in environmental education, in 1998 receiving the BC Environmental Education Award from the Environmental Education Provincial Specialists Association for outstanding contribution to environmental education in BC schools. And this year, WEP received the prestigious BC Minister s Environmental Award from the BC Minister of Environment, Lands and Parks. As well as articles in the Vancouver Sun and local papers, John has been profiled in national and local radio and TV shows, and this summer John and an entire class of students were shown in action on a field trip in the Seymour valley in the program Greater Vancouver" (Rogers cable TV). The students had a ball but the film crew were exhausted after the hike! This year we plan to reach an even greater number of students and teachers, especially in those school districts where WEP has been under represented. We send out a ton of information to all the schools in the Lower Mainland, but if your school has been left out be sure to give WEP a call at the number below. Our web site ( will be updated to be more informative, interactive and dynamic. There are also plans for a day of workshops (our second annual) to facilitate networking between NGO environmental educators and teachers. This was an extremely popular and informative event for teachers last year. And, as always we will strive for excellence and continue to make WEP a fun and inspirational experience for students and teachers alike. Obtaining funding is always a challenge. John works full-time on WEP (and then some!) and receives a modest sum. Everyone else at WEP is a volunteer. Last year, more than 40% of WEP's funding was provided through personal donations from generous folks like you - and that is what keeps us going. We really appreciate all the help we get! WEP would like to thank all of those who have helped to support the program. Sponsors are: Private donations, Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation, Vancouver Section of the Alpine Club of Canada, BC Mountaineering Club, and Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC. If you would like to support Wilderness Education Program please send a [tax deductible] donation to: FMCBC, Wilderness Education. Please mail your cheque to: Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia, 47 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V5Y 1P1. If you would like more information about this program or would like to book a class and/or a field trip, please phone: Avalanche Echoes 5,

Kropp made it, and he will be in Vancouver, at John Oliver High School Theatre at 8pm on Tuesday November 9 th to tell his amazing tale with a slide presentation. In his first attempt to ascend Everest, Goran was forced to turn back within 350 vertical feet and 60 minutes of the top, his strength diminished and his chances of descending alive nearly gone. A few days later, the terrible disaster occurred that claimed the lives of eight climbers. Despite this tragedy, Goran remained determined, and on May 23, 1996, he reached the summit having refused any assistance or supplemental oxygen- the most selfsufficient combined approach and climb of Everest ever accomplished. Days later, he left for Stockholm- on his bicycle. I Made It, the film of his 1996 Everest adventure wowed the audiences at the Banff Mountain Film Festival and around the world as part of the Best of the Festival Tour. 7 Trip Report: Mt. Rexford - July 18, 1999 A few hardy souls made the trek out from Vancouver to meet at the Tim Horton s in Chilliwack too early on a grey and soggy Sunday morning. I tried to maintain optimism and faith in the weather forecaster, who had predicted a nice day. We negotiated our way up the logging road past numerous waterbars, hiking the last km or so. A light drizzle kept us cool and refreshed up through the logging slash and forest, but by the time we reached the base of the huge cliff there were glimpses of blue above, and Mt. Slesse was poking out above the clouds. It was indeed going to be a glorious day! After breaking out of the trees, we crossed a boulderfilled basin, which in July was completely full of snow, so it was a breeze getting to the base of the ridge. The views got even better of Slesse, Canadian and American Border Peaks, Baker, Shuksan, etc. We scrambled up the third class ridge which was mostly very easy. Just below the false summit the route goes around to the left (north) and we scrambled up ledges and cracks (watch out for loose rock here) to the summit ridge. We got the rope out only for the very last 15 metres up to the summit, where everyone enjoyed lunch with a great view. We did about 3 rappels on the way down, including rapping down a gully onto steep snow as a shortcut off the ridge. To do this as a day trip we met at 6am in Chilliwack, and were back to the cars at 6pm. Participants: Ian McGillivray, Mike Tsumori, Andrei Smertin, Irek Jasiak, Zoran Vasic, Helen Habgood (reporter). ACCESS: Start measuring distance on the Chilliwack River road where it starts, just before the bridge across Chillwack River. Turn right on the Nesakwatch Creek road at 30 km (just past the Riverside campground). Cross the river and drive another 200 yards to the right-hand fork which takes you into the Nesackwatch valley. There is a gate at 2.5 miles (open). The Mt. Slesse route/ trail starts at 5.9 km (road spur to right - do not take this). Shortly after this is another gate which was open last month. About 500 m after the gate we got stopped by a giant waterbar (this whole road has been deactivated with waterbars - high clearance would be helpful). The Mt. Rexford route begins from an uphill spur in a large clearcut at 8km. Go up the spur, go around the first switchback and another 100 m or so, look for flagging ribbon, blue paint and a hard-to-see trail marker. Once you find it the trail is well marked through the clearcut, and is good going apart from a steep gully crossing. At the top of the clearcut the trail goes into nice old growth forest, traversing upward to a creek crossing and eventually to the base of a huge cliff which is followed up until it is possible to traverse a basin (south) to reach the west ridge of Rexford. Mt. Slesse as seen from Rexford. Pencil drawing by Angela Muellers. Avalanche Echoes 7

Helpful Hints for Camping You can duplicate the warmth of a down-filled bedroll by climbing into a plastic garbage bag with several geese. When camping, always wear a long-sleeved shirt. It gives you something to wipe your nose on. A hot rock placed in your sleeping bag will keep your feet warm. A hot enchilada works almost as well, but the cheese sticks between your toes. In emergency situations, you can survive in the wilderness by shooting small game with a slingshot made from the elastic waistband of your underwear.
