2 E/UN.14/TRANS/81 Introduction This note gives the current status of the Transafrican Highway sec tion in K^nya and identifies the type of work needed to U, done. Status of the TAB, and actions required thereon The Trarsafrican Highway section in" Kenya, from Mombasa to Lagos, which is 919 km. in length, is bitumen surfaced. For the most,,art, the road has a pavement width of 6,1 metres and capacity to carry 9 lb. (4 kg.) wheel load. However, plans are now well underway to widen the pavement to 7 metres and to strengthen the pavement for a 12, lb. (5333 kg.) wheel load, se.n Table 1. Cost estimst^s The total cost of the improvement works is estimated at about US $5.3 million, sfie Table II, and this is composed of: 14.^ mil $ - for projects whose construction is in progress or expected to start soon mil % - for trojects whose engineering design is under way or planned. 3.5 mil % - for sections which need upgrading, but their improvements have been deferred for the time being, It should be not*d tiiat of the totel cost of $5-3 million, about $1.1 million is for urban streets. Construction and maintenance costs The construction oost of a class 1 (7 metres wide) bitumen road, whicb defends on th- type of the terrain, /is aejallswas ',.:. Flat aud rolling: Ks^OjOOO/km. or US$84,/km. & Hilly: K 4,/W or US$112,OOO/km. Mountainous; K 5,/km. or US$14,/km. Th? construction cost for bridges is about KX6 or US$168 per metre span. 3 Fage 2 Responsibility for roads The Ministry of Works is responsible for the construction and main tenance of roads. In recant years the Ministry of Works has executed about 3 per. cent of the final design of ths roads, witn the remaining 7 p*?r cert be ing done by consultants, It is understood that the Ministry intends to increase its portion of ths design work to at least 5 per cent. This, however, will require additions to the Ministry's professional staff.

Iiowev-^r; the work has been deferrad* This id "being widened to 7 netres and being upgraded bo oarry?oc 1b. wheel load- It is financed hy IBRD and 1b expected to be completed in 1^74. These urban streetn are to be designed in conjunction witn the Hilroret munici pality. This section, which was completed in 1971? liae a pavement width of 6,1 me tres and carrying capacity for a 12, 1b* wheel load. It is found adequate for the prfsent traffic.
