2 R ally Director, Fred Gallagher, has planned a route that avoids the crowds and visits some of the more exclusive game reserves. Exhilarating drives give us amazing views of snowcapped mountains, including Kilimanjaro, and take us through E wildlife-rich plains and grasslands where we can expect to xplore some of the world s great game viewing areas via an exhilarating East see elephants, giraffes, cape buffalo, lions and hippos, as well as hundreds of different birds. 3 9 to 28 February 2020 For full, up to date, route notes see: Route notes: A welcome dinner on board a traditional Arab sailing Dhow in Mombasa Creek follows Scrutineering at our beachside hotel. Day 1: Mombasa to Watamu A gentle introduction to Africa as we head north through extensive sisal plantations. Our first regularity test the rejoining the Indian Ocean coast at Kilifi for lunch. Over-nighting at a luxury hotel on the stunning Watamu Beach. Day 2: Watamu to Tsavo West We follow the course of the Galana River inland to Tsavo East National Park and onto gravel, or murram as it is known in East Africa. Expect to see elephants and giraffes ahead of lunch at Voi Safari Lodge. Passage control at Man Eaters (lions did just that to workers on the Nairobi- Mombasa railway in 1898)! The overnight lodge provides excellent game viewing. Day 3: Tsavo West to Amboseli We cross the spectacular Shetani Lava Flow and approach the Kenya Pipeline Road - Africa s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, should be visible on our left. A passage control at Sopa Lodge then onto the Amboseli Game Reserve, renowned as one of the finest places in the world to see herds of elephant. Late lunch is followed by a game drive. Day 4: Amboseli to Karen Transition day heading north towards Kenya s capital Nairobi. Our luxury hotel looks out over the Ngong Hills made famous by the movie Out of Africa. Day 5: Karen to Nanyuki A passage control commands a spectacular viewpoint over the Great African Rift Valley. Skirting Lake Naivasha, we leave the main road at Gilgil. A picturesque valley takes us to lunch at Nyahururu, known in colonial times as Thomson s Falls. Afternoon tea at Treetops where Princess Elizabeth became Queen in Her coronation in 1953 was the inspiration for the original East African Safari Rally. The sign marking the Equator is a must see, before the pleasant run into our home for two days, the Mount Kenya Safari Lodge. Day 7: Nanyuki to Samburu We drive through the Nyambeni Hills for an early lunch at Leopard Lodge in the Meru National Park. Mid-afternoon sees us arrive at the splendid Samburu reserve for two nights in a top-notch safari lodge. Day 9: Samburu to Lake Bogoria We briefly join the grandly named Trans-East African Highway then head west through open country past Wamba. Overnight halt at Lake Bogoria with its hot springs and pink flamingos. Day 10: Lake Bogoria to Lake Naivasha A spectacular driving day. God s Highway with spectacular views of the Rift Valley, the Kenyan Fluorspar Mine with a valley road that equals any Alpine pass. A test and regularity section, then refreshments at Nyaru. Passing Lake Nakuru and more pink flamingos and Rift Valley lake, Naivasha, is our home for the two nights - look out for hippos. Day 11: Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara A climb up the Mau Escarpment to around 3000 metres before a slow descent to Narok and the Loita Plains, gateway to the Masai Mara. Game will become abundant as we make our way to our luxury lodge on the banks of the Mara River. Day 13: Masai Mara to Serengeti Descending the Oloololo escarpment we cross into Tanzania. A regularity section, Fort Ikomo and the Serengeti National Park end the day. Day 15: Serengeti to Ngorongoro A relaxed start through the Serengeti, refreshments at Lake Ndutu. Passage control at the Olduvai Museum discovery place of the world s earliest human remains. Then a glorious drive to Lake Bogoria Lake Naivasha Serengeti Lake Manyara Tanzania Samburu Kenya Nanyuki Amboseli Watamu Mombasa our lodge on the edge of the 600 metre deep Ngorongoro Crater. Day 17: Ngorongoro to Lake Manyara A gravel section around the crater and great views over Lake Magadi. Followed by a beautiful drive to Lake Manyara, which Ernest Hemingway claimed to be the loveliest lake in Africa. Day 18: Lake Manyara to Arusha More murram roads today to the Masai town of Lolkisale. Lunch is taken at the Safari Camp before a regularity section on the Simanjiro Plains. Overnighting in Arusha at the foot of Mount Meru. Day 19: Arusha to Taita A circuit of Mount Meru before lunch in Moshi in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. We re-enter Kenya at the Taveta border post to follow the track of the Voi Taveta railway which was hotly fought over during the First World War. Main Time Control at Taita Hills Lodge before a short drive through the Wildlife Sanctuary to Salt Lick. Day 20: Taita to Mombasa Driving through sisal plantations to the isolated rock at Rukanga our final regularity follows and a passage control at Mackinnon Road on the Nairobi to Mombasa highway. To avoid the traffic into the city we will have a final passage control section. The Gala Prize-Giving Dinner is in a fabulous restaurant overlooking Mombasa Creek from where we set off three weeks previously. We hope you can join us! Subject to change

Eligible cars Anything with four wheels of a type built before the end of If your car was built in the late 70s, but is similar to an earlier car, then it is almost certainly eligible. Please check with us before submitting your entry form. Event description The Southern Cross safari will use smooth gravel roads to explore areas that few tourists will ever see. We go out of our way to avoid rough roads where possible but with the world s weather patterns changing unseasonal rainfall can affect conditions. On this event you will encounter Regularity sections where you will try to arrive at secret checks at a precise time. The technique is easily learnt; mastery may take a few events. From time to time we run tests on private land, tracks and circuits. No special equipment is required for these. What to take A fire extinguisher, full first aid kit, warning triangle, highvisibility jackets and a towrope are all mandatory. On occasion we will park in historic areas where we insist an oil-resistant groundsheet is placed under each car. Helmets and overalls are not required, nor do you need a competition licence. However, you do need a valid driving licence and usually an International Driving Permit. On event support Our expert team of sweep mechanics follow the last car on the rally route and are prepared to help anyone they come across. Should your car be off-route you must telephone the sweeps as soon as possible. Should you need to be transported by truck we will help as much as we can, but all responsibility, including payment, rests with the competitor. We always have at least one doctor or paramedic on our events. Insurance and other documents Vehicle insurance is not included. Please see our website or call Rally the Globe for suggested providers. We strongly recommend you have adequate travel, medical and cancellation insurance. Almost all nationalities require a visa for Kenya and Tanzania Kenya visas can be obtained electronically: go to ecitizen.go.ke or use a visa agent.
