2 Welcome to Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University To help you settle into the UK and meet other students as quickly as possible, we ve arranged a number of social activities and events for your time in Sheffield. All the activities are free unless otherwise stated. Please check shuspace, the International Students Bulletin and the Sheffield Hallam Summer School 2012 Facebook group for the latest updates and for information about more events throughout the summer. 3 Social events and activities We have organised a range of events for you during your stay in Sheffield. Other events will be posted throughout the summer. Please check our Facebook group Sheffield Hallam Summer School 2012 for the latest updates. 5 11pm, Wednesday 13 June Wednesday 29 August Hallam Union social nights The HUBS Come to the Students Union every Wednesday to watch live sport, play video games and table tennis, and relax with other students. Entry is free. 6 8pm, Wednesday 13 June Wednesday 11 July Capoeira drop-in sessions Every Wednesday Capoeira gives you the opportunity to actively engage with Brazilian heritage. Learn to dance, play, fight and perform acrobatic skills to addictive rhythms from Brazil am 12.30pm, Thursday 21 June Coffee morning Meet at the HUBS This is a chance to go to a local residential home and speak to the older generation during their coffee morning. Find out about their experiences of Sheffield and what they did when they were growing up, and share your experiences with them. Greno Woods project Meet at the HUBS Fancy being involved with some fun, practical teamwork for the day? The Wildlife Trust in Sheffield is looking for volunteers to help with conservation work. This promises to be an actionpacked day and is a chance to make a real difference to the area you live in. To book your place, contact Richard Owen on r.owen@shu. ac.uk or Monday 11, Friday 15 and Tuesday 19 June European Championships The HUBS Come and cheer on the England football team on the biggest screen in Sheffield. All England matches will be shown in HD in Pod C of the HUBS, apart from the second game which will be in Bar Phoenix. A great atmosphere is guaranteed. 4 1 4pm and 5 8pm, Monday 25 June Olympic Torch Relay The HUBS Prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Olympic torch will spend 70 days touring the UK. The torch arrives in Sheffield on Monday 25 June for an evening celebration. During the afternoon, Hallam Union will be building up to the event with activities including a mini Olympics, arts and craft workshops, a cultural carnival with costume making and much more. There s badminton, table tennis, football, basketball and more! All sessions are free. You will find this resource valuable for your research and studies in addition to the Adsetts Learning Centre. Spaces are limited so please register your interest by ing internationalsupport@ shu.ac.uk 11pm late, Thursday 5 July Disney party Embrace nightclub Viva La Fiesta welcomes all Summer School students to Sheffield with a fantastic international Disney party. Come dressed as a Disney character, eg Mickey Mouse for guys and Minnie Mouse for girls. 4
5 12 5pm, Saturday 7 July South Yorkshire Festival at Wortley Hall This is a family festival with dozens of stalls, bands, choirs, dancers and many other entertainers. It s set in Wortley Hall and its beautiful 27 acres of formal and landscaped gardens. 8.30pm late, Saturday 7 July Summer School welcome party Olympic theme The HUBS With student performances, competitions, free karaoke, games and much more, this is really a highlight of the summer. Tickets cost 2 and you can buy them from the Students Union shop. This event will sell out, so get your ticket soon. 2 4pm, Wednesday 11 July Walk to Heeley City Farm Come and join us for a short walk to the friendly Heeley City Farm and environmental visitor centre in Heeley in the heart of Sheffield. 2 4pm, Friday 13 July Cathedral tour This is a tour behind the scenes of Sheffield Cathedral, one of the city s most historic and important buildings. We only have a limited number of spaces, so please internationalsupport@shu. ac.uk to book. 11pm late, Friday 13 July Cowboy party The Leadmill Another chance to enjoy Sheffield s great nightlife. For one night only, wear your cowboy and cowgirl hats and have a go on the electric bull. Get ready to have some rodeo fun! 10am 3pm, Sunday 15 July Peak District walk Come and find out why Sheffield is the greenest city in Europe. One of our British students leads a walk to the edge of the Peak District. Please wear comfortable shoes, waterproof clothes and bring a picnic. This event is free but places are limited. 6 Friday 20 Sunday 22 July Tramlines Various venues around Sheffield The Tramlines Festival is an award-winning annual music festival that takes place in Sheffield. It s one of the best ways to explore the city as events are hosted in various venues. Also, enjoy the some of the best music performed by some on the best local and national music acts in England. On Thursday evenings, students skate for just 1.40 plus an additional 2.10 if you need to hire skates. We will take the tram there so please bring 3.70 for a return fare. Please also remember to bring your SHU card with you. 11am 2pm, Sunday 22 July Trip to Kelham Island Meet at Sheffield Cathedral Discover the history of Sheffield with a trip to Kelham Island Museum, which stands on a 900 year old manmade island. Learn what it was like to live and work in Sheffield during the industrial revolution. And follow the growth of the city through the Victorian era and two world wars to see how steelmaking forged both the city of today and the world. There will be a vintage fair with live music and dance, stalls, entertainment and more. You will need 3.50 fee, your student card ( fee 4.50 otherwise) and some money for lunch. Meet at 11am outside Sheffield Cathedral to make the 10 minute walk to Kelham Island. You can meet back up at 2pm with guides from Hallam Union or make your own way back. We expect to attract nearly 1,000 people. We will be taking applications for stalls from late June. All participants will need to provide a sample of their food and do some basic training at St Mary s before the event. With interesting exhibits about Sheffield life and culture, you re bound to learn something new. The walk takes approximately 30 minutes and entry to the museum is free. 10am 2pm, Sunday 19 August Walk to Botanical Gardens A 30 minute walk to the beautiful Botanical Gardens near our Collegiate Campus with free time to explore the 18-acre gardens. 7

A member of our student crew will meet you at the main pm, Thursday 13 September Farewell event for the Summer School students Adsetts 6620 We will be hosting a celebration event exclusively for our Summer School students (TAR College and SLIIT College students). Enjoy an evening celebrating the time you have spent here with free food and drink plus the opportunity to win Sheffield-themed prizes. 10 students union trips To buy your tickets go to the Students Union, which is based in the HUBS building. This is only two minutes walk away from the main University building. UK trips We have arranged various day trips at very competitive prices. The trip schedule includes visits to historic cities, the most famous football club in the world and fun seaside destinations. You can buy tickets during Orientation or from the Finance Office at The HUBS. Coaches leave The HUBS at 8am and leaves the destination at 6pm. You are strongly encouraged to attend the Students Union trips which are fully insured and properly regulated, rather than trips with external operators which may not be. All prices include coach travel and entry (where applicable). The Students Union will provide an information sheet about each destination on the day of the trip. 10

Among its many attractions are the famous castle and minster. This trip includes free entry to the National Railway Museum, which contains a collection of over 100 trains from the last century. Manchester United and Manchester 16 Join us for a trip to Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, the biggest football club in the world. Imagine yourself as Alex Ferguson in the dugout of the stadium, visit the trophy room and sit by the peg of your favourite player in the dressing room. We will then move on to Manchester city centre, visit an art gallery and museum or spend some time in the wide variety of shops. Whitby 10 Whitby is a small seaside town in the north-east of England which is the home of Dracula. This was a very popular trip last year we took ten full coaches! They say that Britain s most famous dish of fish and chips tastes best when you can see the sea. Whitby is one of the best places to do this. Blackpool 10 Blackpool is a popular seaside resort in north-west England, well known for its piers, trams, donkey rides and the Pleasure Beach one of the most visited amusement parks in the UK. Other major attractions include Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens. Liverpool 10 Liverpool is a glorious World Heritage city with plenty of historical and cultural visitor attractions. Home of the Beatles as well as two world-renowned football teams, it s a city with two majestically different cathedrals. Cambridge 14 Cambridge is a university city of old streets, ancient colleges and lovely bridges spanning the River Cam. The best way to travel down the river is by punting. There are historic and contemporary buildings to visit, world-renowned museums, fantastic theatres and live music. Leeds 10 Leeds is a cosmopolitan city in West Yorkshire. We will go to the Royal Armouries Museum, where admission is free. In the afternoon you will have time to explore the city s shops, galleries and museums. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet 10 Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is the UK s largest outlet centre, with 145 stores. Explore and browse the wide range of designer goods at a discounted price. And if you need a break from the shopping, Cheshire Oaks even has its own aquarium! 11
12 Finding your way around City and Collegiate Campuses City Campus Arriving at the main to City Campus from Hallam Square, you ll find the main reception to your left. As you walk through the you are on level 5 of the Owen, which gives access to the Atrium. The Atrium is the central space that joins many of the buildings at City Campus together you can exit on level 2 to reach Sheaf and Eric Mensforth buildings. You can also access Harmer, Norfolk, Surrey, Howard and Owen buildings from the Atrium. The best way to reach the Adsetts Centre from the Atrium is to take the lift or stairs to level 4, walk along the balcony through the Norfolk then outside to the Adsetts Centre. numbers The following buildings at City Campus are allocated a building number. 2 Harmer 3 Eric Mensforth 4 Sheaf 5 Surrey 6 Adsetts 7 Stoddart 8 HUBS Students Union 9 Cantor 10 Arundel Timetables use 4 digit numbers to denote each room number. The first digit represents the building number, the second represents the floor number and the final two digits represent the room number. Other buildings on the map such as Owen and Norfolk buildings only use digits to represent the floor level and room number. Collegiate Crescent The main reception building at Collegiate Crescent is called Heart of the Campus and is indicated clearly on the map. When you enter this building you will see the main reception to your left and the Student Services Centre reception to your right. s at Collegiate Crescent are spaced further apart than at City Campus and can be navigated using the map on page 14.
