3 The programme. Congratulations on enrolling to study the QRC Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management (Level 7). The course is delivered at QRC House by industry and academic professionals. It delivers the critical theory needed to understand and work in the tourism and hospitality industry, paired with common practical skills. As with all QRC programmes, the format of the programme also aims to instill strong professional standards on students appearance, conduct and self confidence. Programme Handbook The Programme Handbook can be found on the QRC website ( or on Moodle (QRC s academic management system). Clothing Graduate Diploma students wear professional business attire to college. This dress code reflects the highest standards of the hospitality and tourism industry. It generally means a suit jacket, business skirt or trousers and smart leather shoes. You ll look like a professional from Day One of class! Check out the full dress code in the Programme Handbook. Over two days, we hold events, workshops and information sessions so you can learn about your programme, teaching faculty and Queenstown student life. 5 Life at QRC. What do things cost? Some items you might encounter living in Queenstown: Accommodation: Shotover Lodge costs $240/ week for a single room or privately renting a one bedroom apartment could cost up to $391/week*. Getting around Queenstown s size means you can walk or bike most places. For those places that are a little further, Orbus, Queenstown s bus transportation system, runs all over the Wakatipu basin. With an Orbus GoCard, every bus trip is $2.00. Queenstown offers an unparalleled student experience through its thrilling adventure activities, incredible scenery, vibrant town life and safe multicultural community. What to wear (off campus) Queenstown is located on a large lake on the edge of the Southern Alps which means we get a wide range of weather and temperatures. With crisp autumn mornings, snowy Winters, long summer days and warm springtimes, it s best to be prepared for all seasons. Summer temperatures hover around degrees celcius and Winter rarely gets above 10 degrees celcius. Here s some recommended clothing: Get involved There are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in college and Queenstown life. Food: bread (600gm white loaf) $1.55, 2 Litre milk $3.60, apples $2.52 per kilo, fish and chips $5.91 per portion, petrol $2.11 per Litre 91 Octane.** Ski pass: single day adult pass $119, adult season pass $799 (before 31st May) Autumn and Winter - down or woollen jackets, scarves, gloves and woollen hats, merino layers are great items to keep the winter chill at bay. Also get yourself some quality boots. Spring and Summer - t-shirts, shorts/skirts and jandals (flipflops, sandals) are all you will need plus a light jumper and long pants for cooler evenings. If you plan on getting into the outdoors, you can also bring sturdy walking shoes, a waterproof jacket and a sun hat. QRC s student council is your chance to be a leader and get involved in the organising of fund raisers and student events. Student Services is always looking for volunteers for community events so keep an eye on your s and noticeboards around college. Queenstown regularly hosts music concerts, festivals and sporting events. Visit queenstownnz.co.nz for a full calendar of events. The support network and service systems at QRC are in place to ensure fantastic student experiences and support. This successful blend of academic and operational cooperation delivers not only academic success but ongoing support for the individual from admissions and student support through to their accommodation and pastoral care. From Programme Leaders to Student Relations, support is available when and where you need it. Our campus, QRC House, is located right in the heart of Queenstown. You can access the building on Coronation Drive or on foot via Camp Street. Bus: If you re living at Shotover Lodge, you can ride the Connectabus on Route 8 from Arthurs Point to Town Centre, jumping off at O Connells Mall on Camp Street. Campus is a 2 minute walk along Camp Street. Driving: there is limited all day parking around the campus but it s easy to find a park if you arrive early morning before classes. 11

7 QRC hosts Graduate Diploma students at Shotover Lodge. It is located in Arthurs Point, a 10 minute drive by car or bus from the QRC campus. Accommodation. You will be provided with Accommodation Booking forms with your acceptance letter. If you are intending to live at Shotover Lodge, ensure you sign and return these forms to confirm your room. Why live at Shotover Lodge? Firstly, it s a great place to connect with your fellow QRC students! Also, Queenstown rental market is quite competitive so we ensure our students have a warm, clean, safe and budget friendly option. The Lodge is on the Connectabus route with a stop right across the road and for those who like to ski, it is just minutes from Coronet Peak ski resort. The grounds are natively landscaped and include an open fireplace, BBQ area with picnic tables and expansive grassed areas for outdoor activities.
