1 CHILSWORTHY & HOLSWORTHY HAMLETS JUNE 2013 NEWSLETTER contact for Newsletter- Chris Carroll on Information & Advertisements are printed in good faith however the Newsletter can take no responsibility for any business, group or individual represented. HOLSWORTHY HAMLETS PARISH COUNCIL Parish Website: At the Parish Council s Annual General Meeting on 13 th May, Mrs Christine Carroll was presented with a Long Service Award. The council had great pleasure in recognising and publicly acknowledging their appreciation to Christine for creating and distributing this newsletter and she was thanked for her work in supporting local businesses through advertising in the newsletter and providing a greatly valued source of communication for parishioners. Christine was presented with an Award Certificate, flowers and an orchid. Christine thanked everyone for the award and also thanked those volunteers who assist her in distributing the newsletter. Councillor Ken Carroll was re-elected to serve as Chairman for the coming year & Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Parker was re-elected to serve as Vice Chairman. Julia Foster has taken on the role of Parish Clerk following the recent resignation of Miranda Howrihane. The council s Spring Cleaning Day on 27 th May was very well attended and the willing volunteers collected bags of litter and scrubbed signposts and noticeboards (all without being rained upon!) leaving the village looking much cleaner & tidier for everyone to enjoy. Afterwards the volunteers were treated to well-earned refreshments in the village hall including bacon and egg rolls. The next Holsworthy Hamlets Parish Council meeting will take place on Monday 10 th June 2013 at 7:30pm at Chilsworthy Village Hall. All are welcome to attend. Parish Clerk: Julia Foster, Tel: ; laintonju@aol.com Chairman s Report Congratulations to the community of Chilsworthy for your tremendous support on the Bank holiday for the village Clean Up. 37 turned up to help clean the village from one end to the other as well as washing all the signs. We were particularly lucky that the weather held until we finished! It was a great effort and I certainly underestimated the number of bacon/egg baps needed. Thanks to Ros Wardel for her home made biscuits and to Betty Rorik for helping me cook all morning and to all the others who helped set out and put away chairs, wash dishes etc. Next time we will be moving to Staddon Rd. (on a date to be agreed) to carry out a similar operation. Again my thanks for the community support for the clean up which shows we have pride in how our village looks. I hope everyone noticed the new swing in the Chilsworthy Village Hall play area a big thank you to Ray Fursden for making and erecting this. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Dr. Julia Foster as our new Parish Clerk. Julia replaces Miranda Howrihane who served us well for over 4 years. Finally Christine was given an award at our last Council meeting for her efforts in putting together the Parish Newsletter for over 11 years. Christine said the award was also a tribute to all the volunteers who contribute and help distribute the Newsletter every month. I am sure that this coming walk on Monday 10th June will be just as interesting. Meet in the square for o clock move off. Our last walk was the Bude Feeder Canal walk, which was lead by Thelma Stanton. We left Lower Tamar car park to walk along side the feeder canal to Virworthy Wharf, where the barn on the wharf is used as a display centre for the canal in general, and the Wharf and feeder canal in particular. Although the forecast was not good we were able to walk a good distance along the canal and back without getting wet. There were a number of interesting pionts discovered along the route, of which the most interesting was the run of taken from the canal to feed a water mill on Virworthy farm, for, we assume grinding wheat. A total of fifteen walkers. Robert

Necklace found: in the road near The Willows in Chilsworthy. If you have lost a pendant necklace you can retrieve it from the Post Office in the Village Hall during business hours or call to arrange collection. Rainfall Report April/May 2013 The total rainfall for April was 29.7mm, (my lowest monthly reading so far!). This was the 5 th lowest April rainfall since Chilsworthy s records began in The lowest was only 10.7mm (1984) and the highest 137.2mm (1998). However, it has been COLD and the Met Office has confirmed this to be the coldest spring since 1979! (The spring months are March, April and May.) In May the spring weather did not improve and on 14 th May we had 36.2mm of rain in one day, more than the total for April! But at last the sun is shining and May seems to be ending on a good dry(ish) note. Pauline EGDAW COMPUTERS Computer repairs and upgrades. Computers built to your requirements. 3 Holsworthy Rural Policing Update *Bridgerule 2 garden ornaments were stolen from the front garden of a property on the main road through the village. They were a grey and white stripped concrete lighthouse and a pink plastic flamingo. Total value approximately 30. *Ashwater A Tower scaffolding unit valued at a 1000 was stolen from a property near the village. *Bridgerule Another garden ornament was stolen from a garden near the centre of the village. This time it was an iron metal dog on a spike valued at 10. *Chilsworthy Stolen from a shed were 1 Echo petrol strimmer valued at 200, a Jonsered IPT 13 ride on lawn mower valued at 400 and a Husqvana chainsaw valued at 100. *Rydon Village, Pyworthy A white wooden rowing boat was taken from the lake beside the Rydon Inn Public House over night on the 6 th May. It has now been recovered, undamaged General advice:- Now that the sun has finally appeared and we are all making the most of it, please remember to shut and lock your doors and windows if you go out. Also if you are in your back garden, lock your front door/side door as you may not hear if anybody were to enter your property. This sort of opportunist crime has happened. If you are planning a holiday or for whatever reason you will not be at home for any length of time, ask a neighbour or friend/ local neighbourhood watch to keep an eye on your property. Pick up post, maybe even leave a car on the drive from time to time. Put washing on your line or open and shut curtains etc Put some lights on timer switches, anything reasonable to suggest that the property is occupied. When out gardening, do not leave lawn mowers, strimmers, etc unattended whilst you go inside for lunch etc this is also an opportunity for the opportunist criminal. Have your items security marked by us. We are only too happy to come out to your address and postcode your property. Do not advertise on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter that you are about to go on holiday etc. as this will let everyone know your property will be unoccupied.
