LET US HEAR FROM YOU! Members of FSMA this is YOUR Newsletter would you like to send us Copy or make a Comment? Please contact: Philip Heyes: tel or e mail (preferred): Jphilipheyes@aol.com or Don Rainger on Copy for the June 2017 Newsletter to P. Heyes (e mail as above) by Friday 19 th May Or, please write to the Secretary, F.S.M.A., Salford Museum & Art Gallery, Peel Park, Crescent, SALFORD M5 4WU We want your comments and suggestions. A VERY BELATED HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are planning a full and varied programme and will be supporting exciting projects at the Museum and Ordsall Hall. If you have paid your FSMA subscription for 2017 Grateful thanks! For those yet to renew a gentle reminder To renew, please use the form at the end of this Newsletter. Subscriptions for 2017 remain unchanged at 10 per person PRESIDENT S PERAMBULATIONS Hello Friendly, if belated, New Year greetings! Two dozen people attended our Christmas party and a most enjoyable time was had by all. Thanks must go first of all to Jane and her colleagues in the SMAG café for their culinary contribution. The pies were scrumptious and furnace-hot, just what was needed on a chilly, mid-december lunchtime, and the atmosphere and service were excellent. It was a hectic time, for not only were we enjoying our celebrations, so too were many of the Salford Community Leisure staff who were down from the Civic Centre holding their festive gathering. Mapas play at 2017 Christmas Party: Photo Rosemary Boardman We were all entertained by members of staff from MAPAS, Salford s music and performing arts organisation, and FSMA thanks them for their most appropriate contribution. To our very own Monica and Rosemary we say thank you for organising the event and for producing the quiz based on paintings in the galleries. The second part of the quiz, put together by yours truly and based largely on events which had happened in Salford at Christmas, mainly during the lifetime of the Friends, proved, shall we say, more testing. What the party did manage, though, was to bring people together and perhaps get them to chat to members they may not have met before. Numbers attending our events rose steadily during 2016 and, encouraged by this, we intend to arrange further visits in coming months. A reminder, now, that subscriptions for 2017 are due. At the time of writing around two-thirds of members have already paid their 10, and we hope that the remainder will sign up again. Membership has risen over the past couple of years. In this era of budgetary constraints, it is more important than 2

ever that groups like ours support, in as many ways as we can, our local cultural assets, so please sign up again and try to convince someone you know to join the Friends. Many of the events at SMAG and the Hall during Advent were well attended (both venues were closed from Christmas Eve to New Year Bank Holiday) and attendance was up by 280 at the Hall when compared to the previous year. Monton Voices choir enhanced the Victorian Gallery on 11 th December and the Eagley Brass Band, although only seven players strong, brought a warm glow to the Great Hall at Ordsdall on a chill, steel-grey Sunday afternoon a week later. I enjoyed both events. My personal favourite, however, was the concert given by the Fallowfield-based Alteri Choir at the Hall. An off-shoot of the Hallé Choir, these singers produced A Tudor Yule of simple beauty and complexity. If they return to Ordsall I urge you to buy a ticket. When it was over I headed off into the cold night reflecting how fortunate we are to have such quality experiences in stunning local surroundings. Before the end of last year the committee agreed to provide financial support for the restoration of one of the two Markendale portraits which have historic links to the Hall. Our Collections Manager, Peter Ogilvie, is currently looking to have one of the paintings, which is showing clear signs of wear and tear, conserved. FSMA is hoping to arrange an event at SMAG during which we can view and learn more about the portraits. At our January meeting it was agreed that we provide bursaries to two local young people to help them pay for their training and examinations for the Royal Horticultural Society courses for which they are studying at Ordsall under our Head Gardener and Trainer, Lindsay Berry. The courses are proving very popular and Lindsay is now teaching students on-line as well as at the Hall. She gives a fuller account of these activities later in this bulletin. See also her novel scheme for fund-raising. Some people sponsor pandas or tigers, now you will have an opportunity to sponsor a plant or vegetable in Ordsall s grounds. Speaking of the Hall, Liz McNabb is back in harness there as manager following her maternity leave. Both Ordsall and SMAG submitted their accreditation reports to the Museum Association prior to Christmas. The redesign of the Gallery at SMAG which housed FSMA s exhibition is ongoing. Students from Salford University are involved. Two students from Leicester are working with the pottery collection and writing a catalogue for the forthcoming RA exhibition. A note on the LifeTimes Link magazine. Despite time constraints it was published and distributed to subscribers before Christmas. It is on sale at SMAG, the Hall and libraries in Salford for 3 a copy. If you have not bought yours yet don t leave it long as they are selling well. The front cover photo shows the Friends holding their Carol Concert in Lark Hill Place on 16 th December We are described as singing with typical Victorian gusto that photo alone is worth the cover price. And no, despite what some of you may be thinking, I wasn t in the picture! Finally, the Friends AGM is again on the horizon. Details are elsewhere in this Newsletter. Please put the date, Wednesday 22 nd March, in your diary and do your best to attend. And just a reminder about those subscriptions if you haven t re-joined, do send us your cheque and do try to convince someone to sign up with you. Best wishes Don Rainger Hon President FSMA 20 th January

Ordsall Hall s new Garden Sponsorship scheme An exciting new Garden Sponsorship scheme, which began in December 2016, allows visitors, staff and volunteers to engage in a whole new way with the gardens and the plants and wildlife that call it their home. For those who fancy learning more about the gardens at Ordsall Hall, it will give them the chance to connect with and help to support a host of amazing plants, art works and garden objects. The Sponsorship scheme will also play a huge part in helping to develop key wildlife friendly habitats over the coming years such as wildflower beds, wildlife friendly hedging and bird and bat nesting sites. New ornamental borders and planting schemes, including a cut flower border, Edwardian bedding displays and beds with winter colour and interest and will also benefit from support via the scheme. A wide variety of items are available to sponsor, from entire garden areas such as the Orchard or Knot garden, to individual plants and objects, with prices ranging from just 10 to 30 depending on what you choose to sponsor. Each time a person sponsors an item they will receive a sponsorship gift pack which includes information and a photograph of their chosen plant, seed, animal or object, as well as a certificate. We send this directly to the sponsor or to a recipient of their choice, if being bought as a gift. On top of this, we ll provide regular updates on the plant, animal or object and people will even be invited to special workshops or gardens. Our sponsorship scheme can be accessed via the online shop as well as via the SCLL Just Giving Page. If you want any further information about the scheme you can also hunt down one of our gardeners in the garden or call the Hall s reception. What can you sponsor? RARE PORTRAITS RETURN TO THE WALLS WHERE THEY ONCE HUNG Ordsall Hall is delighted to announce that, working with the Friends of Salford Museums Association, it has secured 4900 from the Charles Hayward Foundation towards the conservation of a unique portrait of one of Ordsall Hall s former residents. Ordsall Hall is the one of the oldest surviving houses in the UK. From the 1100s up until the 1970s, it has always been lived in. One of its fascinating characteristics is that is has had so many different inhabitants - from medieval Lords of the Manor, to Tudor Knights of the Realm, dangerous temporisers of the Catholic faith to protestant priests in training, Victorian mill owners to the Pre-Raphaelite artist Frederic Shields. 4

One family that lived at the Hall, and ran its surrounding farm, from 1815 to 1871 were the Markendales. The Markendales were famed in the Manchester and Salford area for being prominent and prosperous butchers and tanners. In 2011, two unknown portraits were discovered in an out-building of a farm in Cumbria, literally rotting away, not having seeing the light of day for decades. The farmer, a direct descendant of the Markendales, contacted the curator at Ordsall Hall as he thought that the portraits may have a connection with the Hall. Indeed they did! They were the portraits of Ellis and Mary Markendale who lived at Ordsall Hall between 1815 and The farmer kindly donated the portraits to Ordsall Hall in When the Markendales first moved into the Hall, they only lived in part of it. It was not until 1850 that they took on the tenancy of the whole Hall and became the sole residents of the manor house. It is likely that the two portraits were a direct response to the Markendales new found status and were commissioned to reflect their prominence in local society at that time. Ellis ( ) was painted in 1851 by the artist William Scott. William Scott ( ) was a portrait painter born near Leicester, England. He came from a humble background and painted portraits of those with enough money to sit for him mainly in Leicestershire, Manchester and Liverpool. He exhibited in The Royal Academy, London, and at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. An article written by Country Life in the 1860s describes the portrait of Ellis as a superb piece of work. The portraits of Elllis and Mary Markendale are significant historical works of art in that they represent unique examples of a surviving physical link to a very prominent local family who once lived and worked at Ordsall Hall. In Ordsall Hall s ownership, there are no surviving, original paintings of any of the past residents of the Hall and it has had many inhabitants since the 1100s! The portraits give us so many visual clues as to the status of Ellis and Mary and, because Scott painted the Hall in the background of the portrait, the pictures also reveal much about the condition of the Tudor mansion house in the mid-nineteenth century. They are historically valuable because of their unique Ordsall provenance and because they tell a story that no other pieces in the Hall s collection can. We no longer want these captivating works to be hidden from view. With grants from the Charles Hayward Foundation, the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund and The Friends of Salford Museums Association, Salford Heritage Services is going to professionally restore the portrait of Ellis and return it to the walls where it hung over 160 years ago. We are restoring Ellis ahead of Mary as he is in a far worse state than his wife! We will hang the portrait of Mary next to Ellis, in order to encourage visitors to the Hall to understand the need for Mary to get the same treatment as her husband. Hopefully, this will create debate, establish a visual case for support for restoration of the Mary portrait, and encourage public donations with which to carry out the much-needed restoration work. The proposed treatment on Ellis includes specialist works such as securing the flaking paint, removing the dirt and bird droppings, repairing the torn canvas fibres by weave mending, and filling the paint losses by in-painting with fine ground pigments. Help! 5

We still need donations to restore Ellis to his former glory and give Mary the same treatment. Please donate what you can to the appeal by visiting the Hall or donating online at: Left: Rescued for restoration Portrait of Ellis Markendale by William Scott. On Monday 27 th February 2017 Caroline Storr, Heritage Development Manager will give a talk about the portrait its history and significance at the Museum and Art Gallery Peel Park. The talk is at 2 p.m., admission free of charge. The Museum is bringing out the painting for us to see. A splendid opportunity to meet Ellis Martendale!
