Sculpture Saint John Newsletter! Volunteer This Summer! Get Involved! JOIN US AUGUST 4TH FOR OUR OPENING CEREMONIES AT 11:00AM SAINTJOHN WATERFRONT VASILIS VASILI Art is the curtain that seats between us and the unknown. By making art I am escaping from my fears." Due to unforeseen circumstances, Korean artist, Kyoung Uk Min and his wife, Shin Ae Park will not be able to join us for the 2016 Sculpture Symposium. We wish Min a speedy recovery! We would like you all to give a warm welcome to Vasilis Vasili! A contemporary Greek sculptor, Vasilis studied from at the school of Fine Arts in Athens. In 1999, he received a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation and moved to the United States. He received his Masters of Fine Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in From Vasilis taught at the Technological Institution of Athens, and from he also taught in the Department of Fine Art at the University of West Macedonia in Florina, Greece. In 2013, he moved to Canada where he now lives with his family. Vasilis Vasili has more than fifteen public works in Greece, USA, Canada, and throughout Europe, and he has taken part in numerous exhibitions and shows, including the 2015 Nova Scotia Sculpture Symposium. 2 VILLAGE OF CAMBRIDGE - NARROWS The village of Cambridge-Narrows is located in south central New Brunswick on the picturesque Washademoak Lake. Unspoiled landscape, scenic views, and local hospitality give the community its country charm. The village is home to approximately 650 residents, and a greater number of seasonal cottage dwellers. The three local campgrounds attract a considerable number of residents during the summer months. The village was originally founded as two settlements, Cambridge and The Narrows, one on either side of the Washademoak Lake. In 1966 the two settlements merged to form Cambridge -Narrows. PORT SAINT JOHN Located in the southern part of the province of New Brunswick, Port Saint John is Eastern Canada s largest port and has a diverse cargo base, handling an average of 28 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, including dry and liquid bulks, break bulk, containers, and cruise. With global connections to over 315 ports around the world, Port Saint John is easily connected to central Canadian inland markets by rail and road. Our port is a facilitator of trade and a part of Canada's Atlantic Gateway, providing a marine gateway to global markets. August 2

TOWN OF RIVERVIEW The Town of Riverview is home to more than 19,000 citizens. With numerous development projects underway, New Brunswick's largest town is expected to grow as more people choose to live and work in Riverview. We are an active community made up of young families, retirees, and professionals who live in Riverview because of its high quality of life. Our residents enjoy a low cost of living, abundant natural green space, free activities and seasonal festivals, along with recreational programs for every age, interest, and ability. A recent resident satisfaction survey revealed that 99% of residents rated the quality of life in Riverview as good or very good. We also received top marks for our amenities and services, roads and infrastructure, and planned growth. As a top location to live and visit, it's easy to see why Riverview is such a great place to grow. NB MEDICAL SOCIETY (FREDERICTON) The New Brunswick Medical Society and the Canadian Medical Society are about to celebrate their 150 th anniversary. The discussion turned to how best to celebrate this important date. There was discussion of celebrating the anniversary internally within the profession with archival studies to document our history as a profession. However, with further discussion we also came to realize it was more important to celebrate this anniversary externally with the population of the province. The idea of commissioning a piece of public art to be placed in our provincial capital was identified as a very appropriate solution. The stone symposium in Saint John was a great opportunity to acquire such a piece of public art, made all the more appealing because of the permanence of the stone. When it came time to select an artist, Catherine Leva struck us as a gifted artist whose abstract works were appropriate to the exploration of a concept such as the longstanding relationship between profession and population. We are very excited to see how she will interpret this subject. August 3

SAINT JOHN AIRPORT At the Saint John Airport, we believe that public art can contribute to the visual and textural character of a community, create a sense of place, and foster a sense of spirit by celebrating our cultural heritage. Public art seeks to inspire relationships and communication. As a gateway to the Fundy region, we enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to act as stewards for a sculpture work that is produced through the SSJ project, and will be proud to be a host site for public art which enhances the community landscape. Welcome to the historic and beautiful Town of Grand Bay-Westfield! Located in southern New Brunswick, along the scenic St. John River, our community s unique identity is strongly rooted in our people, our surroundings, and our rich history. Grand Bay-Westfield is a diversified and active community, offering an outstanding quality of life. Our affordable housing, quality public education system, seasonal community activities, and strong business community, coupled with a small town charm can be found nowhere else. Grand Bay-Westfield offers the best of urban and rural New Brunswick, encompassing both an active local business community and access to larger local and regional markets. Minutes away from Uptown Saint John, Grand Bay- Westfield has fast and convenient access to a variety of business, personal, and government services. With the American border a one-hour drive away on recently upgraded highways, companies and businesses in Grand Bay- Westfield and area have access to the largest market of its kind in North America. August 4 GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD

TOWN OF OROMOCTO I welcome you to discover and explore our community. Oromocto is known as Canada s Model Town, a progressive and prosperous community developed around Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, one of the largest military training bases in the Commonwealth. Oromocto is also known as a community that is deeply rooted with a diverse culture and heritage. We are nestled along the Oromocto and St. John rivers with a population of approximately 9,000. These pristine waterways are among the finest in North America and offer many recreational opportunities for our residents and visitors alike. Located on the Trans Canada Highway, we are a convenient stop for a day, week, or lifetime. All are welcome to discover and enjoy what we've always known: there is no place like our beautiful town! SAINT JOHN HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION - PUBLIC GARDENS Enjoyed by many for its freshwater lakes for fishing, swimming, boating and skating, Rockwood is the hub of outdoor activities year round. Over 55 trails and footpaths will guide you through the Park s unspoiled charm, with its unusual topography and geography. Within the Stonehammer Geopark region, Rockwood s billion years of history can be seen in unique rock formations, caves, and waterfalls. Discover all the fascinating treasures in New Brunswick s all-season natural amusement park. August 5

How Can I Help? Here s how... There are many ways to help and get involved: you can volunteer your time and/or services; you can donate money; or you can make an in-kind donation. An in-kind donation is a kind of charitable giving in which, instead of giving money to buy needed goods and services, the goods and services themselves are given. Every little bit helps! To see the different ways to donate, please click on the following link: We have lots of returning sponsors and at varying levels. But we need more! If you know a company or an individual that would like to be part of our event as a sponsor, please either refer them to the following link or tell us who they are and we will connect with them! uploads/2011/09/sculpture_sponsorship2.pdf Contact Us!
