Assembly Buildings Conference Centre is located in Belfast city centre. Dating back to the 6th century when St. Colmcille (Columba) founded a monastery, the city has been one of Ireland s continually inhabited settlements and is home to many historical buildings, renowned cultural venues and of course the 400 year old city walls. This area is known to have been the inspiration for C.S. Lewis land of Narnia in the popular children s books The Chronicles of Narnia. Rich in flora and fauna, it is a paradise for walkers and bird watchers, full of folklore and culture. At Tollymore the Cedar Avenue is magnificent, and there are river, lake and forest trails of differing lengths, whilst Castlewellan is home to the National Arboretum and Annesley Gardens, the hedged Peace Maze planted with 6000 yew trees, and the family mountain bike trails. Kilbroney is famous for its ancient woodland, walking and mountain bike trails and idyllic setting; Slieve Gullion s scenic drive offers stunning views across the Ring of Gullion, Mourne Mountains, Cooley Peninsula and Armagh Drumlins and has top class facilities for walkers and families. In the upper Mournes are the vast tranquil reservoirs of Silent Valley and Ben Crom. There are many walking trails showcasing the stunning scenery and the 22 mile Mourne wall also runs from peak to peak over some of the highest summits. The towns in the Mournes area have their own stories to tell, such as the fishing villages of Kilkeel and Annalong, Banbridge with its linen industry legacy, Victorian Rostrevor and the historic City of Newry. To the west of Newry lies the Ring of Gullion, also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This striking landscape is an area steeped in Celtic mythology famed for it s rich culture and heritage, and numerous prehistoric and early Christian sites.

77 DISCOVER NI 75 Strangford Lough Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Strangford Lough is Northern Ireland s first marine nature reserve and is the British Isles largest sea inlet, internationally renowned for its marine, plant and wildlife. The area is popular with tourists and noted for its scenery and picturesque villages and towns. As well as the main town, Newtownards, at the northern tip of the Lough, other notable examples are Portaferry and Strangford, separated by a short ferry crossing at its southern end. The area is known for its seafood restaurants and cafés and its unique crafts. It is associated with two great Scots, James Hamilton and Hugh Montgomery, who led the settlement of Ards and North Down, laying the foundations for the Plantation of Ulster by Scottish people, whose descendants came to be known as the Ulster-Scots. Known as the Orchard County owing to the rich apple growing country centred around Loughgall in the north, each May the county comes alive with pink flowers in the apple trees, and the annual Apple Blossom Festival celebrates the start of the season. The elegant City of Armagh with its Georgian architectural and Mall which is celebrated in November through the annual Georgian Day event is best known for its rich Christian heritage. The city is a main destination on the Saint Patrick s Trail and has been known as the spiritual capital of Ireland since the Saint founded his great church in 445AD on the hill-top where presently the Church of Ireland Cathedral is situated. On the opposing hill sits the magnificent St Patrick s Roman Catholic Cathedral. The adjacent Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & Archive houses more than books dating from as early as the 15th Century together with a fine collection of historical artefacts. The city has many sites to be explored and enjoyed. Re live the battle of Barossa, part of the Napoleonic Wars at the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum. The Armagh County Museum holds rich and diverse collections of relevance to the area. Step back in time at Navan Fort situated to the west of the city. 81 DISCOVER NI 79 Causeway Coast & Glens The 120 mile Causeway Coastal Route is internationally recognised as one of the Top Five Road Trips in the world adorned with an abundance of coastal villages, historic landmarks, beautiful beaches, country parks and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Giant s Causeway. Join the route north of Belfast and stop off for a white-knuckle experience at the Gobbins Cliff Path. Continue along the breath taking coast road and delight in the romantic landscapes of the enchanting nine Glens of Antrim.
