UPDATE E October 2015 INFORMATION and NEWS for Lions in District 105E Let s all GO for Lions Awareness Week I'm really looking forward to Lions Awareness Week. This will be launched on Saturday 3rd October and will run right through until the following Saturday. I know that many Clubs are taking part by doing programmes promoting Sight initiatives, launching major projects or just Lions. Last year when I asked Members and Clubs throughout the District what the key issues were, one of the most mentioned was improving our profile, nationally, regionally and locally. Lions Awareness Week is a great opportunity to do something positive get improved public recognition... District Governor Lion Paul Stafford and Lion Ann Another key aim in the District Plan is to modernise and streamline our Multiple District (this covers the British Isles and Ireland) and I have been spending considerable time on behalf of District 105E working with colleagues to achieve this and also to produce a Five Year Vision for the Multiple District. We have to reflect our rapidly changing society in looking at the Lions organisation in the future. I promise to keep you updated on progress. At the start of 2015/16, what percentage of the membership in District 105E were women? The answer... 22%. I'm hoping you will agree with me that this figure really isn't good enough when we have a 50/50 male/female split in our Geographic area and Lions membership is open to everyone. In the District Plan we have highlighted an increase in female membership as a goal and I have asked PDG Elaine Kitchen to start discussions with Clubs and Lionesses on how to achieve this. I hope in future editions of this newsletter to report successes. booking forms are now out, and there is an opportunity to pay monthly to even out the costs. Having visited Belvoir Castle several times recently I can assure you that it is a truly spectacular venue. The Business sessions will involve all attendees and will stimulate new thinking and ideas. They are free to attend. The Banquet will be a once in a life-time opportunity to eat in the magnificent State Dining Room and to enjoy superb entertainment. Finally, hopefully we'll meet up soon. During this month, I'll definitely be at Bourne, Coningsby & Tattershall, Matlock, Sleaford, Horncastle, Swadlincote, Ilkeston, Edwinstowe, Oadby & Wigston, Barton and hopefully at other Clubs too, it will be great to see you. Thank you for your support to date through my year as your DG. District Governor - a quick word in your ear please! Anyone think of a better caption? Just send it to news@lions105e.org.uk UPDATE E is Edited and Produced by: Lion Gordon Davison - news@lions105e.org.uk Tel: or

The ingenuity of the Lions in 105E never ceases to surprise me. To raise funds for my chosen charity clubs are distributing quiz sheets, planning concerts and trying to loose weight. And those are only the ones I know about. Thank you for all you re doing. Lion Ann Stafford I had a meeting with the MS Society Fundraising Coordinator for our area recently. Caroline Kew is new to her role but has spent many years fundraising. Whilst she was extremely grateful for any funds raised, she was also excited about our organisations working together. I m sure that, as Lions, we can be of service. For example, Caroline was very interested in our Message in a Bottle and Wallet. You could visit the local MS Branch, find out how your club can support them, invite someone to be a guest speaker at your Club meeting or work with them to help those affected by MS. During a lovely day out at Stapleford Carnival (courtesy of Derby Hemlockstone Club) I met MS Society volunteers who very kindly invited me to visit their Derby MS Activity Centre. It provides support and help (for those with MS and their families) including complimentary therapies, hairdressers, exercise classes (both seated and standing) and yoga. Fellow Lions... as a service organisation we have the ability to work together to achieve amazing things. Please contact Caroline Kew to find out how you could help your local MS Branch. Thank you for everything you do to help... Meeting MS Volunteers at Stapleford Carnival Is this the first time we ve featured a birth announcement in Update E? Well, if it is we are extremely happy to offer our to two very proud parents. Hykeham Lion President Andy and Kirsty Biddulph are delighted to announce the birth of their son Harry Pierre Biddulph on September 14th... The happy smiles are well justified... Andy, Kirsty and Harry Pierre - everyone in 105E joins in wishing you all much happiness together.

After two years of planning the CPISRA World Games got underway with a spectacular Opening Ceremony and parade of Athletes. Chairman of Council, Lion Simon Moss and Lion Christine, accompanied by DG Lion Paul Stafford and Lion Ann represented Lions of MD105 who partnered CP Sport (England & Wales) to provide volunteers ( ). This was the first event to be held in Nottingham s magnificently refurbished Harvey Hadden Sports Complex and athletes from 17 countries revelled in the world class facilities. It was all characterised by the fun and friendship enjoyed by all athletes, volunteers and officials. People cheered athletes irrespective of the country they represented or where they finished in their event. Helping each other whenever the need arose, the camaraderie in the Games Village and the smiling faces of the volunteers always there to lend a hand without being asked. World class performances were evident in all events the precision of the bowls competitors, the grace of the poomsae taekwondo, the excitement of the table cricket (with Australia winning something in cricket at last!), the determination of the footballers, all culminating in World Records being set in both athletics and swimming. A large group of Lions and Lionesses had volunteered to be, doing tasks wide ranging tasks including announcing, managing the daily programme for volunteers, helping in the media centre, working on the information desk, assisting officials in each sport, manning doors and showing spectators to their seats. Looking resplendent in lime green T-shirts and hoodies they certainly couldn t be missed and over 1000 hours of service was delivered by Lions during the games...! Thanks to all who volunteered... everyone had a great time especially Peter Green of Coningsby & Tattershall who had the pleasure of being made Team Host to the Swedish team (smiles never left his face!). Whilst our photos give a feel for the event you really had to be there to experience the atmosphere and happiness of the competitors. Taking part in this truly amazing event was tiring but a wonderful experience never to be forgotten. PICTURES - from top: 1. The colourful Opening Ceremony: 2. 4 Our feature aims to encourage all Clubs and individual members to share innovative ideas with other Clubs... Hopefully one of your ideas will soon be seen here. a prize (courtesy of DG Paul is up for grabs, so... Wanting to do something special to mark the Club s 50th year of service in the community the members of SCUNTHORPE LIONS set out to find a suitable project. They wanted to deliver something tangible that would display their gratitude to the people of the Town who have given generous support over many years. The result was the Flower Arbour pictured here. This has been erected in the grounds of The Civic Centre, an area through which many people pass each day. It s also handily close to the Town s Registry Office and so is used(virtually on a daily basis) by newlyweds wishing to obtain photographs of their special day. A plaque is attached to the arbour which records the thanks of the Lions to the townspeople and also lists those who donated or helped with the construction and siting of the Arbour. This project has brought a high degree of publicity a kudos for the Club and, thanks to the high level of design and craftsmanship it is a project that has also delivered much pride. Can you top the entries already published in our BRIGHT IDEAS competition? During 2015/2016 we will be featuring YOUR Bright Ideas... Please send details to either DG Lion Paul Stafford or Update E Editor Lion Gordon Davison WELCOME to New Lions... An impressive induction of four new members took place at Edwinstowe and The Dukeries Lions Club. Pictured with 2nd VDG Lion Stephen Green (left), Lion Lucia Green (3rd right) and Lion President Steve Scall (extreme right) are new Lions Other new members in our District are District 105E Membership now stands at 1,072 so it is still apparent that we need to do more to emulate the fine recent achievement of Edwinstowe and the Dukeries Lions. do all you can to encourage more people to take up the challenge of Lions Clubs and to enjoy the tremendous fellowship which we all have the privilege to share.

Helen Keller C.1925 We continue our nostalgia series to mark the Lions 2017 Centenary but also in Keeping with Lions World Sight Day... LIONS - Eradicating Blindness Whilst appreciating that the majority of Lions will be familiar with the LCI commitment to Sight topics it s perhaps worth again reflecting on how Lions first became involved in this area of service. In 1925 addressed Lions who were attending the International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become Since then Lions Clubs have worked tirelessly throughout the World to aid the blind and visually impaired and now, as we approach 100 years of service, Lions can proudly claim to have worked on projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve eye health and eye care for hundreds of millions of people Worldwide. Saved the sight of more than 15 million children by providing eye screenings, glasses and other treatments through Sight for Kids. Established or strengthened pediatric eye care centers that have helped more than 120 million children. Helped halt the spread of trachoma in Ethiopia by providing 10 million doses of the sight-saving drug azithromycin annually. Prevented serious vision loss for more than 30 million people worldwide. Improved eye care for 100 million people by training more than 650,000 eye care professionals and building 315 eye hospitals. Distributed more than 147 million treatments for river blindness. Provided nearly 8 million cataract surgeries. Vaccinated 41 million children in Africa against measles a leading cause of childhood blindness. So, reflecting on our past is perhaps a good thing and will make us all proud of the fact that Lions have for so many years responded effectively to the challenge of Helen Keller and we truly can claim that we are the Lion President Denise Poisson Windsor Downtown Lions Club Ontario You will recall that in the last edition of our Nostalgia Column contained piece about the first UK Lions Club. In this article I stated that this had been sponsored (thanks to the foresight and intervention of HRH Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother) by Lions in Canada. Now I can tell you that I took the opportunity to make contact with the Windsor Downtown Lions Club and have received correspondence from their current President, Lion Denise Poisson. She tells me her Club is indeed proud to be are associated with the formation of the UK s first Lions Club and she says...

LIONS IN THE ZONE Greetings fellow Lions from Zone A. Zone A covers the North East of Lincolnshire where the northern boundary is the Humber estuary. There are currently six active clubs in the zone. Barton Upon Humber (situated on the estuary at the southern side of the Humber) has 24 members. Grimsby Cleethorpes Club (28 members) lies at the Mouth of the Humber. The town was once famed as a fishing port and is now prominent in frozen food processing. Just to the South of Grimsby is the Humberston North Sea Lions Club with a membership of 24 and moving inland we find my own Club, In a small, former Roman and Anglo Saxon township, Caistor and District Lions have 32 members. Our smallest (and newest) Club is Market Rasen... a town which boasts the well known race course. the Club has 15 members. Finally Brigg District Lions (32 members) operates in a rural market town recognised for its annual horse fair. We are privileged to have such a sound strong membership. Individually, our clubs have been very busy over the past few months being involved in a wide variety of activities. As seen in a previous edition of Update E, completed the Monte Carlo car run. The Club continues with its regular monthly pub quizzes. were also competitors in the Monte Carlo car run and joined forces with the town for their annual Beer Festival. ran a Charity Golf Day, a Pub Quiz, and its major event It s a Knock Out. have had the annual Gardener s Fayre and have subsequently presented the town with two new floral planters in the market square. has tickled the community s taste buds and lubricated their throats with their ever popular annual Beer Festival. The Club is now following this up with a Family Fun Weekend and Cider festival. joined forces with the Caistor Goes team for a medieval weekend in the park where they ran the beer tent and provided hot food. Plans are of course already afoot for the festive season, ranging over Christmas Fayres, Santa Sleigh Runs and Carol Concerts. As a zone we again joined forces with Zone B at the Lincolnshire Agricultural Show, where he had a marquee filled with information about Lions, and which generated some 90 enquiries about membership. These are currently being followed up. Forthcoming charters are Barton 31st October, and Brigg 14th November. Details of these can be obtained from club secretaries. Whoops! It would seem that last month I was given some incorrect information for the caption which accompanied this picture. It was featured in an article on Youth Exchange and the names of Lions from Dumfries were not wholly accurate. The caption should have read... Doncaster Youth Camp 2015 Scottish Hosts and the Girls they hosted... Lion Jim and Ann McCormack and, Lion Euan Fraser, with Maja and Mihaela from Macedonia, Ana from Spain and Ela from Croatia

Brave Lions defy bad weather and raise over 4k Lion President Bob Lilley tells the story... held their on a very wet Bank Holiday Monday. We were joined by a two very special volunteers, DG Lion Paul Stafford and Ann. They both willingly contributed in all areas of the event including the gates, visiing the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responder tent and First Aid Post. They also sampled the delights of the tea tent and BBQ. Meeting many members of the club DG Paul seemed to smile everywhere he went despite the weather. This annual event grows each year in popularity and has helped to raise the profile of Shepshed Lions Club in the community. Top - Lions David Jackson and David Coble determined not to let rain spoil the day. Whilst below we can see that the weather was, of course just perfect for the ducks Lion President Bob Lilley caterer extraordinaire Throughout the months leading up to the event, the committee setb about raising sponsorship and financial support to make the event better each year. We attract stall holders, from far and wide, with a variety of wares and activities to suit all tastes. The event is now so popular that stall holder s now book a year in advance. A fairground aimed at entertaining both children and adults was just one of many other attractions. Arena events included a clown act (with an exploding car) and an hilarious duck and sheepdog act. Further entertainment came via a military marching band but a World War 2 Dakota Fly Past was sadly cancelled due to weather. There seemed to be unlimited displays with reptiles, birds of prey (kept very much apart), bouncy castles and a children s maze - all combining to make it a splendid day... To cap it all the Shepshed Lions run their own tea tent and BBQ which adds greatly to the profits. The aim of the club is not only to raise funds for charitable causes but also to heighten awareness of our work in the community. In doing this we strive also to stage an event that is affordable to all (stall holders and attendees). Over 1200 people attended and the feedback since the event suggests that many came out on such a wet day just because it was a Shepshed Lions Club event and they were aware of the wonderful things the Club does in the Town. This success is undoubtedly thanks to publicising through local media and on social media just how Lions spend the money raise in the local media and on social media.

Out for a Duck... The Deepings Lions Club saw 3000 bright yellow ducks make their way along the river, travelling under the River Welland stone bridge, in a bid to win their sponsor a fabulous cash prize of 100. Held alongside the main race, were three other duck races, one for the local pubs, one for estate agents and one for shops. The winners of each race were The Coach House, Beebys Estate Agents and Private Kollection. Other entertainment was laid on to keep the huge crowds entertained. This included stalls, bouncy castles and funfair rides in Bridge Street. Children and adults alike donned duck headbands and made a lot of noise with their duck whistles. The event has been held annually for about 30 years.. In fact its been going so long that none of the current Deepings Lions can remember when it first started. In recent years all the profits have been given to Macmillan Cancer Care but this year a change seemed right following the tragic death of Lucy Jessop. Lucy, a pupil at the Deepings Comprehensive School, suffered from a heart condition. After talking to Lucy s parents, Deepings Lions decided to share the profits in Lucy s memory between the British Heart Foundation and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). It s expected the final sum to be donated to the two charities will be around 1,800.
