1 APPENDIX B: Network Capability & Characteristics for Freight Services Photo (Aberdeen): representing the railway challenge of bulk and intermodal rail freight, co-existing with an increasing and enhanced passenger service. The significant growth forecast for Scotland mainly centres around successful intermodal traffic utilising road to rail swapbodies and tanks. Our export market requires 2,896 mm high containers and chilled and frozen products require to be moved in reefers which, as well as mainly being 2,896 mm high are also 2,550 mm to 2,600 mm wide all of which is challenging for some key Scottish routes on the intermodal wagons most commonly used for Scottish traffic. The requirement for reefer width and 2,896 mm height to, in particular, Inverness and Aberdeen is essential to secure growth therefore further analysis is required to confirm what work would be required to structures that are both foul to normal clearance and structures that would be infringed so that an informed view can be made on the scale of funding that would be required and whether or not there could be other more cost-effective solutions (ie bespoke wagons, container alternatives ie chamfered corners, speed restrictions plus enhanced maintenance regime) to permit specific combinations of wagon/swapbody/tank to run. This document is a snapshot in time, intended for rail freight industry use. It will be updated annually, or more frequently if required in line with enhancements, however please check the relevant condition of carriage form (RT3973CON, RT3973HAW, RT3973EXL or RT3973NUC), Sectional Appendix or Statement of Compatibility (SOC) to supplement this detail to inform decisions. Always use the most up to date information contained within the Conditional of Carriage forms and/or Sectional Appendix. Please note there may also be operational restrictions that are not captured in the detail below but could impact on timetabling. Please note that as Class 67 locomotives are not diagrammed to haul freight traffic in Scotland at the moment and are not currently forecast to be utilised more in the future, Class 67 speed restrictions have not been included within in this document therefore please check the Sectional Appendix/relevant SOC.
