How many times have they visited each of those schools and on what dates did they visit? What year groups in those schools were visited? What kind of activity were they engaged in when they visited those schools (e.g. recruitment, curriculum- related, assembly presentations, careers advice, outdoor activities, or other categories)? I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). The Armed Forces never visit schools for recruitment purposes and would only ever visit a school after being invited by a teacher to support school activities. Similar contributions to schools are made by the Police, Fire, Ambulance and other emergency Services. The Armed Forces get numerous requests from schools each year and the three Services take these opportunities to explain to children their role in protecting the nation, and to pass on valuable skills such as leadership, teamwork and citizenship. A search for the information has now been completed within the Ministry of Defence, and I can confirm that some information in scope of your request is held, broken down by the Services in the tables below. 9 ROYAL AIR FORCE The RAF has complied information for the 2012/13 Academic Year. The tables are divided under various headings, and the following provides an explanation of each term. Gatekeeper Events: These are events aimed at those who hold knowledge and influence decisions, be it teachers or parents etc. Motivational Outreach Events: This is an event delivered specifically by the Outreach Teams and these would normally comprise Personal Development and or Leadership problem solving activities. Establishment Visits: Visit to a school or educational premises to give Careers advice/presentation or to drop careers literature off. Curriculum Support Visits: These are activities delivered by the Outreach Teams in support of National Curriculum objectives namely the Maths/Science Mission Learning tools that enable visiting personnel to deliver lesson plans & objectives that dovetail in with the National Curriculum albeit with a RAF theme, using service life scenarios in the lesson plans.
