5 Lothian Gateway occupies a strategic location within Central Scotland being accessible from Junctions 4 and 3A of the motorway. The site is approximately 17 miles west of Edinburgh city centre and 32 miles east of Glasgow city centre. Accessible to all major trunk road routes. 7 Bathgate, originally named Bathchet in the 12th century, is the second largest settlement in West Lothian. Once a quiet farming and weaving community dabbling in small scale line and coal quarrying, Bathgate s population expanded rapidly in the 19th century due to coal mining and the town s proximity to the major ports of Glasgow, Leith and Grangemouth. The town boasts an array of shops, an open air market. and a wide range of restaurants and bars. Other facilities include a theatre, a museum and a 4,000 year old burial ground. While for those in pursuit of sport, Bathgate Sports Centre offers plenty of activities, while fishing and golf plays is readily available. The town is also home to Bathgate Thistle, the local junior football club who won the Scottish Junior cup in Source: Visit West Lothian Livingston is the sub-regional centre, featuring one of the largest indoor shopping and leisure complexes in Scotland, with around 155 shops and eating establishments and a designer outlet mall with multiplex cinema, gym, and 100 outlet stores. The edge of the town centre is dominated by retail parks. The town centre also contains a large number of offices, including the local authority's headquarters building. Other facilities include hotels, a swimming pool and local authority gym. Almondvale Football Stadium and West Lothian College are located north-west of the town centre. Livingston is in relative close proximity to the port of Rosyth in Fife, which runs three sailings a week to and from Zeebrugge in Belgium. Linlithgow, the former regional administration town, has significant historical buildings and architecture, the most notable being Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
