Diary 2018 Most meetings are held at Portchester Community Centre 7.45pm. 5th October 2018 Two presentations. Chris Drew and James Woodcock will split the evening between them. 2nd November 2018 Three members, half-hour each. Plus 1969 photo competition. 7th December 2018 Christmas fun quiz. Editorial News item to or hand to either the chairman or secretary. Please There note is a lot of news from our area this time mainly.centred on cutbacks from many sources. There is little to the...report new on vehicles. Ironically operators to our east and west have recently received a large batch of buses. 41 Enviro 200 arrangements. saloons are at Poole and 30 Enviro 400s at Worthing. Perhaps some will come into our area soon, with Unlinks large order now being delivered in Southampton. There is a continuing story with the protracted demise and resurrection of Emsworth and District. Again with the cutbacks this newssheet appears at a time of unfinished business. News The August meeting welcomed back Andy Warton as our special guest. The evening covered facts, figures and photographs of buses found on British roads, from AEC to Ward. An extraordinary amount of information was imparted; numbers of chassis built; who built the bodies; how many for each body builder; who were the major purchasers and all supported by Andy's normal high standard of photography. It had been some time since Andy had presented an evening, but it was well worth the wait. A really pleasant evening greeted us on 7 September. The subject was bus stations, garages and termini and the range of the illustrations show just how much of what had been taken for granted has turned into history with umpteen redevlovopment sites having been created. Many thanks are given to those who kindly participated in the evening th January 2019 Roger Watts opens our golden anniversary year. Hayling Ferry bus service. A new bus service starts 24/9/2018 between Hayling Island and Portsmouth. First Solent will extend their number 15 service to the ferry landing area in Eastney - a community bus will serve the Hayling side. Both bus services will run Monday - Friday for a six-month trial. The three-minute ferry crossing avoids a 16-mile road journey between Hayling and Eastney. 1 st February 2019 Model bus rally and One every decade photographic competition. Plus AGM. 3 News from our area. There were two major park and rides in our area in the last week of August. Portsmouth hosted the Victorious music festival over the bank holiday and these contracts were awarded to Xelabus. From: THE HARD INTERCHANGE PORTSMOUTH To: CLARENCE PIER SOUTHSEA No.: X25 Service type: Limited Stop Effective date: 24 August 2018 End date: 26 August 2018: FRIDAY 24TH AUGUST SUNDAY 26TH AUGUST 2018 ONLY and from: LAKESIDE CAR PARK, COSHAM To: CLARENCE PIER, SOUTHSEA Via: CAMP SITE, FARLINGTON PLAYING FIELDS ONLY No.: X30 Service type: Limited Stop Effective date: 24 August 2018 End date: 26 August 2018 FRIDAY 24th AUGUST SUNDAY 26th AUGUST 2018 ONLY. Only the X30 was observed, which seemed to be host to Stagecoach double deckers, although G503SFT, one of Portsmouth City Coaches opening stock was also seen. The only Xelabus seen leaving the M275 was a single deck Scania OmniCity, although the press reported that the X25 was being operated by Xelabus recently acquired hybrids. The Ageas Bowl hosted the 4th England v India Test Match which produced a significant number of buses. From casual observations Wheelers and Xelabus were major providers with about eight each, judging from paper labels placed at the front of the bus. In fact, only these two operators were used on the Sunday but Lucketts and their subsidiary, Mortons had buses at the start of the match. Interestingly Lucketts six figure fleet numbers which incorporate seating at both ends has had to be expanded to accommodate their 100 seaters. Oddities made up the rest of the buses seen. Go Ahead South can often be seen on this sort of work but only one a day was to be seen and that in the evening. They were all liveried for Unilink, the one on the first day being one of the new Enviro MMCs just delivered and reported below. The other two days were from the batch due for displacement. The other two vehicles to report were a real surprise. On the Friday a large 30 year old double decker turned up owned be National Distress. I had noticed the bus in Poole Docks the previous weekend, The company does not fall in our area buy you might find it interesting to Google it. Finally SK17HHC, a Wright StreetDeck which boasts additional features and was trailed by First in Leeds initially pending life as a demonstrator. It appeared on the cover of Buses. December 2017, so reference that too now that the evenings are colder. The current user of the bus is Xelabus hence its involvement here. There was no sign of Stagecoach and the only First involvement was an enhancement of their route 8 Southampton to Hedge End, operated by single decker s of course. Emsworth and District has morphed into Portsmouth City Coaches Ltd although reports indicate the general public would be unaware! The following are taken from Notices and proceedings which indicates work planned beyond the Emsworth previous operating area. There has also been a significant cull of old stock. First in Portsmouth and Fareham has the most extensive but Stagecoach in Winchester has been tweaking with some weekend frequency improvements whilst others have some reduced frequencies, especially on Saturdays. First Southampton has some Saturday cuts and Sunday improvements with a couple of routes changing their passage through the city centre. There is a tendency throughout to have reduced frequencies on Saturdays but encouraging signs with some Sunday enhancements. Thanks to all who have contributed to this newssheet. 4 MY INTEREST IN BUSES BY DAVID LINDSELL We moved to Fratton on Portsea Island in 1950 and, during the next decade, I enjoyed many trips on the Corporation Trolleybuses being impressed by their smoothness and quietness of the ride. When old enough I started to take an interest in the local railway scene, becoming a regular trainspotter at Fratton station. Once steam was at an end, I rekindled my interest back to road transport and started taking bus numbers and collecting photographs. I also attended steam rallies for a time. (see picture) On many summer Sundays, I would walk along the Southsea seafront noting the various visiting vehicles at both the Clarence Pier Car Park and the Canoe Lake Car Park (see pictures taken with an old Kodak Box Camera) which were both used by buses and coaches on day trips to the seaside. Amongst the visitors were many London buses including RT s and RF s. My interest these days is in bus preservation and in particular in the Solent area. I joined the City of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Department at an early date becoming their membership number 13 and made several yearly visits to the Broad Street Depot when that was open. (see picture) I was also member of the Vintage Transport Group for a time and contributed to their newsletter. I regret to say that, living in Andover, precludes me from attending meetings or becoming more active in the preservation of the former Portsmouth buses located at Wicor, Porchester. 4 Solent Omnibus Club April 2018

BURSELDON BRICKWORKS - STEAM DAY ~ David Lindsell I took these pictures at the above event which took place on Sunday 22nd July. An area near the car park has been allocated to these former Southampton City Transport Buses which were formerly located at Flexford near Chandlers Ford. April 2018 Solent Omnibus Club 5

"A bit of the old Midland & Great Northern: Great Yarmouth in 1962 and Adrian Willats explains... Before you all moan that the M & GN was a railway, and all shout "THIS IS A BUS CLUB!", there is a connection here, which this member, at least, thinks is of interest! At the 2017 Basingstoke Festival of Transport, I bought some very interesting issues of "Bus & Coach" from the 1950s and 1960s. The one for September 1962 contained an article about the former Great Yarmouth (Beach) railway station, closed along with most remaining parts of the former M & GN system in I knew that it had become a coach station at some time after that, but I learned from this article that 1962 appears to have been the first summer of the site's use as such. Much interesting detail is provided by author William Lambden, including charges paid by the coach operators, which ranged '.. from 1s for setting down, picking up and staying not more than an hour, to 6s for using the facilities for up to 24 hours..' Spending a Saturday observing the comings and goings, Lambden noted almost 370 coaches using the site, with 70 more at an 'overflow' site a quarter of a mile away on more disused railway land. Recalling the times when many holidaymakers arrived in the early morning on overnight services, not to mention departing 'guests' being expected to vacate their 'digs' by not long after breakfast (!), he provides some amazing figures for the use of the coach station's left luggage facility - at the time that he counted, there were 163 people in the queue, despite there being five men working 'flat out' accepting items for deposit! In addition to all this, the local municipal buses also served the site back then, but sadly by the time Robert Martin and I visited in 1985, things did not seem anywhere near as hectic! A few coaches were visible in the one slide that I took, but there were lorries parked up there too - and I don't recall seeing much in the way of 'facilities', be they lavatorial or luggage related! Surprisingly, however, this does not appear to be another "Oh well, it's gone then" story! A quick 'Googling' of the coach station revealed that it does still seem to be functioning in 2017! A web entry, appearing to be council-supported, informs us that the coach station is only 100m from the seafront and has space for up to 100 coaches. As an interesting comparison with 1962, current prices are quoted (presumably per vehicle) as follows: 4.70 for up to 3 hours, 8.30 all day and 46 for a week. Toilets are available and a left luggage service is still offered - but now it is only available on Saturdays. I bet there aren't five staff in it either... Bus & Coach Sept original copyright W. Aug 1936 PROVINCIAL TRAMWAYS TO BE WOUND UP. Resolutions have been passed at the annual meeting of the Provincial Tramways Co., Ltd., authorizing the directors to place the company in liquidation. It has disposed of its subsidiary undertakings, except the Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Co. The consideration on which winding up is proposed is as follows: Preference shareholders are to receive 25s. in cash per share, with dividends up to the date of payment. Ordinary shareholders are to be paid 4s. in cash and will be awarded two ordinary shares of 4s. each in a new company, in respect of each fully paid 1 share held. 7 "Another sunny Stokes Bay Rally" - Adrian Willats reports on 2018's event. Once again, the "weather gods" looked favourably on the Provincial Society's popular and well supported event. This was the third successive year that I have visited the rally, and it was good to see so many familiar faces amongst traders, bus owners and other fellow enthusiasts. Those who are inclined to moan (absolutely NO names, as they say!) might deride such 'predictability', but as long as there is a little variety from one year to the next, I don't mind a regular 'core' of buses being seen. As is pointed out in this year's rally programme, with so many competing events and ever-increasing fuel costs, we are fortunate that vehicle owners do still want to support this and other events - and in my view we should be grateful for any that make the effort! I had a 'car-free' day, travelling down to Gunwharf by "The Star" route 8 and then joining the Gosport ferry for a calm and pleasant crossing. I could see the stern of our new aircraft carrier HMS "Queen Elizabeth", the absence of white 'tents' on the flight deck indicating her imminent readiness to depart for the U.S.A. Also almost completely devoid of similar coverings of her upper decks was HMS "Warrior" - perhaps the restoration and repairs that have affected her over the last few years are now also nearly finished. On arriving at the Gosport side, the short walk to the bus station revealed King Alfred Olympic JAA 708 apparently waiting to form a free shuttle service to the rally. In fact, another bus (1942-vintage Provincial 55) turned up shortly afterwards, and it was that venerable bus on which I had the pleasure of riding to the rally. Acquiring a programme immediately as I 'alighted', I then had a look round the traders' stalls and took a few photos before taking my first lunch stop. I was able to do something towards redressing the comparative lack of slides purchased thus far in 2018, acquiring 35 on this occasion. Some 44 prints were also added to my collection, but no books this time. After meeting up with Robert Martin after he arrived later on, we had more browsing, food stops and photography before catching the shuttle back - coincidentally for me, once again worked by Provincial 55! I look forward to supporting the 2019 rally, with of course the hope that the sun will shine once again. I noted the mention in the programme of former Provincial Society member and rally stalls marshal Brian Hay, who passed away in June. I served with Terry Lawson, Margaret Lovell, Chris Duce and Brian on the Vintage Transport Association committee in its last few years, and it is sad for Terry and I to note that we are now the only two left. I echo John Sherwin's sentiments and I am sure that many traders, vehicle owners, society members and friends will miss Brian's contribution to this hobby of ours. He was a very able organiser and ViTA secretary but also a good friend, with a generous helping of kindness and humour, characteristic of so many from his native Wales. I shall remember and miss that very much. Seen here are: An unusual route display on London M1069, Southdown 583 with early NBC logo, a pair of "Breezers" and a pair of Nationals - Alder Valley South 251 and Provincial 432. The interiors show Provincial 55, (I travelled upstairs to the rally, and downstairs going back to the ferry), and Southdown 122 on which we enjoyed the "cavalcade" ride around the town! 8 Strike, Rattle and Ride ~ Peru 2018 ~ Barry T. When it comes to early morning wake-up calls, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 at 6.07am is certainly an encouragement to get out of bed and thus began our first morning in Peru. On the plus side was the opportunity to watch rush-hour buses in Lima as life continued as normal. As with most modern cities, Lima suffers from chronic traffic congestion despite a high frequency bus network and modern BRT line. There are 15,396 buses registered in Lima by numerous independent operators, typically using smaller van/truck derived chassis and the larger of these have locally built bodies. The local authority, Municipalidad de Lima, oversees the Sistema Integrado de Transporte on routes in the 200/300s and the Metropolitano BRT with its four lines. Stretching from Matellini in the south to Naranjal in the north the 'Metropolitano' is the most convenient for tourists as line C connects the tourist district of Miraflores and the old city, whilst lines A and B require one change. The full system is 21 miles in length and has 38 stations. Stations have network maps at the entrance as not all routes go the full distance or call at all stations. One inconvenience for visitors is the need to acquire a pre-purchase smartcard and load it with cash. The local advice was to stand at the entrance barrier with 2.50 new soles, the cost of a single fare, and ask a local to 'tap' you through in exchange for the cash, and it worked. The terminal at Naranjal provides the best location for observing all varieties of operators and vehicle types. The district of Miraflores has four Metropolitano stations with Ricardo Palma providing the least hazardous connection to local buses which congregate around the Ovalo and Central Park and only requires crossing one major road. The disadvantage with this location from an enthusiast s perspective is the lack of American style school buses which are still prevalent on local service in the centre of Lima. Lima has attempted to integrate the various independent long distance bus operators in the Grand Terminal, at Plaza Norte close to Metropolitano station Tomds Valle, but several still insist in managing their own departure points, such as Cruz del Sur on Avenue Javier Prado which is the departure point for the seventeen hour 629 mile trip along the Pacific coast to Arequipa. Arequipa is a tourist mecca with the historic centre built in a grid system of narrow one-way streets on one bank of the Rio Chilli, whilst the modern sprawling suburbs sit on the other bank and extend for miles along the highway thanks to the wealth generated by mining. The majority of bus routes from both areas pass through the Puente Grau bus station, with small van derived vehicles covering the narrow old streets and the occasional conventional bus crossing the bridge from the modern side. The bus station consist of two rows of stops on two levels and is heavily congested with dwell time rigorously enforced by transport inspectors. The occasional full size tourist coach penetrates the old city but the only large buses to do so are the unwieldy looking Ashok Leyland/Marcopolo double-deckers on sightseeing duties. VW Volksbus EOD with B49D body. Uramo Tours Modasa bodied service bus. Mitsubishi Fuso with Carrocerias Immetaz body The next two days of our tour were aboard a Mercedes Benz with Irizar i6 body on an excursion from Arequipa (7550ft above sea level) to the Colca Canyon and Condors' Cross via Mirador De Los Volcanes (16,000ft above sea level) and a descent of 14 hairpin bends and numerous twists with a journey time of 4 hours to the town of Chivay (12,000ft above sea level). Whilst the Mercedes handled the altitude without any problems, older express buses on the route struggled: radiator grills lifted, engine covers propped open and a thick black trail of exhaust fumes left in their wake. Continuing on to Puno, gateway to Lake Titicaca, the majority of express buses tended to be three-axel single deckers with Scania chassis and Marcopolo bodies. The route passes through Juliac, the provincial capital and transport hub, which is currently without a completed road bypass and its narrow streets are congested with van derived minibuses and Moto Taxis (tuk tuks). The road into Puno is steep with the main residential area sitting on the slopes above the bay whilst the main commercial and university areas sit along the lake shore. The local bus network is dominated by van derived minibuses plying their trade around the bay and the extent of the network is defined by two large tourist hotels on opposite headlands. From Puno we cheated and made the journey to Cusco by overnight train. This was fortuitous as it turned out because a planned day of national strikes meant that the road system in and out of Cusco was severely disrupted. Our planned train arrival time was brought forward by one-and-a-half-hours to circumvent any potential problems which the train company feared may include level crossings being blocked by protestors. The view of the express coach station from the train showed a large number of coaches standing idle as were the local city buses. By mid-morning, tourist coaches were either trapped in the city or unable to enter because main roads were blocked by rubble and oil drums, and the police increased their weapons from side-arms and riot shields to additional rifles and teargas launchers - a situation which lasted until 4pm. Eventually the all clear was given and we boarded our small VW badged MAN 'truck with Modasa (Motores Diesel Andinos S.A.) Apolo body and left the valley in a convoy of vehicles, driving through a slalom of rubble, oil drums etc. As we crested the hill there was a long convoy of express coaches waiting to enter the city. It soon became apparent that small truck derived coaches do not make comfortable express vehicles on steep winding roads and we arrived in the Sacred Valley amidst plumes of smoke coming from the brake pads. No such problems for German tourists staying in the hotel as their smart German registered Neoplan Cityliner, belonging to Worldwide Gruppenreisen of Dachau, Munich, sat proudly in the car park. According to the driver, German 8 Solent Omnibus Club April 2018

clientele demand luxury so the coach is shipped to South America for a year and makes regular journeys from Santiago, Chile through Boliva and across Peru, under the Andino Tours branding. If you want to continue further along the Scared Valley the only options available are walking or train. When the train from Sacred Valley arrives at the town of Aguas Calientes (gateway to Machu Picchu), Mercedes Benz Lo915's with Marcopolo or Volare W9 bodies transfer you to the citadel entrance. This is via a dirt road with a climb of 390 metres and thirteen hairpin bends, passing on route the depot for the operator Consettur Machupicchu S.A.C. Consettur Machupicchu S.A.C What a difference three days can make! Returning to Cusco from Machu Picchu, the city was alive with a fully functioning bus service and vibrant coach station. The narrow one way streets are plied by small van and truck derived buses with individual operators such as Batman, Servicio Andino, Satelite and El Dorado with the route displayed along the side of the bodywork. Most routes run through the old city to modern sprawling suburbs on either side with mini interchange points such as City Park Limacpampa and Calle Concebidayoc doted around. The coach interchange is located ten blocks from the centre at Terminal Terrestre (Earth Terminal), a functional single story concrete building containing all the operators' individual booking kiosks and passenger seating area. Externally there are fifteen boarding bays and a vast parking area for coaches on layover. Micaela Bastidas which overlooks the interchange and runs parallel to the railway line is used by many operators as a parking area and houses a roadside depot for Transportes Power. For the final leg of the trip back to Lima, there were two route options. The first, generally considered the safest but longest, was to return via Arequipa, but that entailed travelling over many miles of previously travelled roads. So option two, a direct and spectacular route over the Andes covering 680 miles in 22 hours, was chosen. With dramatic scenery and interesting history Peru is well worth a visit, although with questionable driving and problems breathing at high altitude, it is literarily not a country for the faint hearted. 10 Finding my routes. Chris Drew The Queen Alexandra Hospital Park & Ride service It wasn t until a friend of mine ended up in QA that I realised this service even existed. The Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is possibly unique in the country in operating a dedicated Park & Ride service for staff to use exclusively. It runs what is quite a short service between the hospital site and a car parking area about 5 minutes away on the top of Portsdown Hill at Fort Southwick. It s a Monday to Friday service starting at 6am and running at 15min intervals (7 min peak hours) throughout the day until quarter past 8 in the evening. Above, I use the word exclusive...and so it is. On the day I tried to blag my way on board, I was told that my bus pass didn t mean anything, I had to work for the NHS...which, of course, I don t. It meant a gentle walk up the hill side to get this shot. StreetLite climbs Southwick Hill Road with QA spread out in the background and Langstone Harbour further still. Surely, in an ideal world, this has to be a candidate for an open top substitute during the summer months, talk about a route with a view! Alton rally Solent Omnibus Club April 2018

Quality not quantity ~ Chris Drew Last year at Imber, I did go a wee bit mad. I ran, cycled or drove back and forth across the area trying to get photographs of anything and everything that moved. I did get lucky on several occasions and came away with some shots I was pleased with. In my meanderings, I made some mental notes about possible locations for future photographs usually caught from the corner of an eye whilst trying to avoid leaving the tarmac at speed! I went back to those locations this year. When that many of the same type of vehicle are together, it becomes more noticeable at what stage in the buses life the owner wants his/her bus to be seen. Many carry features from later versions but purport to be from a time anything up to 30 years earlier. There were a few exceptions to that rule. Two that really caught my eye this year were RML2344 and RM613 and of the two, the RML won by a short head. The reason was the flake grey band, not a feature too many people remember happening. It only lasted as part of the London livery for a few years. It was introduced in 1965 when the last 500 RMLs came into service. It was also seen on the XA Atlanteans. It was and still is infinitely more modern, cleaner and brighter than any of the shades of white that followed, but also more sophisticated than the cream it replaced. Saying that, and before I get lynched by an irate London enthusiast, RM613, looked about as perfect as it could. Also, the overcast sky made them shine more than they would have on a day with bright sunshine. April 2018 Solent Omnibus Club 11

Two years later at Romsey Bus Station ~ Rodney Barnes Reading the 2016 edition at Romsey again has shown how similar today is and there is no harm in almost updating the 2016 read. These surveys have been randomly called Two years later at. or an Hour at but I would particularly emphasise the latter on this occasion. The visits to Petersfield and Romsey, which lie away from what is hoped to be called the Solent Powerhouse produced relatively few buses so an hour is tweaked to maximise the numbers. At Romsey a new start time was found and in common with other places a strict hour was observed being fifteen minutes earlier than normal or twenty minutes earlier than previous Romsey times. The decision was accelerated when five buses were in view at one time. This venue s catchment area spans both Hampshire and Wiltshire I repeat the caveat issued in the past. The bus station at Romsey is effectively at the end of a cul-de sac so the biggest risk is that a bus arriving at Romsey and not returning on service could miss the bus station if there are no passengers on board to disembark. More significantly the destination displays could well have been switched off. Romsey has regular links with three nearby towns; Winchester, Eastleigh and Southampton, the two cities having a basic half hourly service. There is a regular hourly service from Southampton to Salisbury but most journeys avoid Romsey with just a few serving it. The first departure after 1445 was route X7R to Salisbury and was a relatively modern Enviro 400, 1577 which is 63 registered. It is a Salisbury depot working and in their Salisbury Reds livery which is rather pleasant and is significantly darker that, say, the London standard offering. Salisbury Reds is one of the local groupings with Go Ahead. The bus was allocated to the Isle of Wight when new. Enviro , in Bluestar livery, bears a 65 registration. This took a route 35 journey to Ampfield. The 66 by Stagecoach serves Winchester. The three buses on this thirty minute service seen in the hour at Romsey provided a complete contrast with each other. The route demands single deckers because of its route with a low bridge in Romsey. The three buses were 36025, one of the earliest Enviro 200 bought by Stagecoach. It saw service on Winchester city s routes when new and this 07 bus has been superseded by a batch of MMC bodies E200 in a purple and gold livery Winchester city livery. However this did not stop one of them from reaching Romsey with arriving from this 65 registered batch. The third bus was an Enviro 300 recently transferred from Portsmouth was one of the batch dedicated to route 23 between Leigh Park and Southsea before being displaced last year. The bus has a 58 registration. Over the year of these surveys some of the former Romsey town services has been absorbed in this route 66. Bluestar operate a mainly hourly service 5 to Eastleigh but two departed in the hour. It produced a pair of extremely interesting buses. First up was a Scania OmniCity saloon having a 58 registration and recently transferred from Poole, number The second was the unique Volvo B7TL with Enviro 400 body. It was the second oldest bus of the day, bearing a 56 registration. Now to the Southampton bound buses. This basic half hourly service provided two buses with an extra short working to Lordshill, numbered 604, the main route being 4. Mercedes Citaros were the main buses in 2006 whilst this September saw two 63 registered Enviro 400s and The short working 604 was operated by all Scania OmniCity decker 1112, a 58 registered model, which was new on the Isle of Wight. Wheelers provide a route to Southampton via Abbotswood as route W1. The bus arrived from Southampton early in the hour and spent over an hour in Romsey Bus Station. The bus was Optare Solo YJ64DVZ. The final bus in the hour was route 663 a Stagecoach route which has superseded a PS series of routes which was initiated by Peter Symonds College in Winchester, PS2, but not the renowned one. Route PS2 was operated from Peter Symonds College. Stagecoach route 663 runs from Winchester to Lordshill via Romsey Bus Station. The oldest bus of the day worked this service being 18512, one of the Alexander type bodied Tridents which started life on the 700 Portsmouth Brighton service. The bus has an 06 registration. Romsey s services are quite reasonable but there is very heavy school work with many such passengers including on the standard services. Despite its small size Romsey enjoys evening bus services with a late in the week departure at 2340 back to Winchester. There is a train service to Winchester and Eastleigh in the evenings so Romsey is far from being isolated. Add in the increase in the number of double deckers and a visit to Romsey can give a satisfying experience. Make sure you enjoy it.
