The mosaic was displayed in the Community Artspace in John Lewis in the Victoria Centre, where it attracted praise and positive comments from many customers visiting the store. Naomi Walters, community fundraiser at Nottingham Hospitals Charity, said: We re very grateful to the Year 1 children at Lady Bay Primary School and to John Lewis for their fantastic support. The mosaic looked amazing and I m sure it will have helped to raise awareness of our Saving Lives Helipad Appeal, which is raising 3 million to build an on-site helipad at Queen s Medical Centre. This will get the most seriously injured patients to the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre more quickly helping save time, to save lives. The mosaic was created as part of the John Lewis Community Matters scheme, which supports charities and community groups local to each John Lewis store. 3 PLOUGH PUB TREK UP KILIMANJARO FOR CHARITY A group of 18 friends, family and regulars from The Plough at Normanton-on-the-Wolds are participating in a charity trek up Kilimanjaro in aid of two causes close to the hearts of the local community, Amy s Fund and Dove Cottage Day Hospice. The trip is entirely self-funded by all taking part - including The Plough s landlady - and they are aiming to raise 20,000, which is to be split on a 50/50 basis between Amy s Fund and Dove Cottage. Amy s Fund, set up in memory of Amy Duffield who passed away suddenly back in August 2013, goes towards raising money for the Critical Care Units at the Nottingham University Hospitals. Dove Cottage Day Hospice, located in the Vale of Belvoir, supports those with terminal and life-limiting illnesses across the areas of South Nottinghamshire, North Leicestershire and Rutland. Their fundraising efforts have so far consisted of a charity fashion show, a charity New Year s Day walk and an African-themed ball. They also invited one of the local primary schools, Crossdale Primary School in Keyworth, to get involved and design and create a flag, which will fly outside The Plough whilst they are away. 4 04 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 SHARPHILL AND ARENA LEISURE CENTRE PLANS SUBMITTED Two important planning applications have been submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council, which could result in major construction projects taking place in West Bridgford. Plans to expand Rushcliffe Arena have been under consideration for some time, but an application has now been submitted. These plans include a swimming pool, squash courts and other sporting facilities. If approved, the extension would see the closure of Rushcliffe Leisure Centre. In addition, Rushcliffe Borough Council s offices and meeting facilities would move there from the Civic Centre. Meanwhile, another planning application has been submitted for the Sharphill area. Developers wish to build 280 dwellings in an area behind Edwalton Lodge Close and at the back of Rushcliffe School. The construction would also involve a play area and new access to the site. Local residents can comment on the application via the planning section of the Rushcliffe Borough Council website at rushcliffe.gov. uk and it can by found by using reference 14/02715/FUL. DONATION FOR CLIFTON FOODBANK One hundred items of Christmas puddings, mince pies and turkey-flavoured crisps have been donated to the NG11 Clifton Foodbank. These were the proceeds of the community fireworks event held in Wilford Village at Nottingham Moderns Rugby Ground at the back end of last year. Event organiser, Roger Steel, told The Local News: The Foodbank volunteers from Hope Church in Clifton really do a tremendous job. They do so well in serving the needs of local residents, who may have fallen on desperate times. We are only too pleased to support this excellent community enterprise by the Trussell Trust.

7 RUSHCLIFFE 50+ FORUM UPDATE By Alan Wain Two weeks before Christmas, the Forum held its Christmas Festival in St Luke s Church Hall in West Bridgford. The Forum s chairman, Paul Childs, welcomed everyone to the fourth open forum of the year, which was the Forum s 40 open event. Lillian Burden gave a talk about Just Friends, which she founded four years ago to give lively minded, active, local, unattached people aged 55+ the opportunity to enjoy a variety of social activities within a friendly group atmosphere. For further information please call Lillian on or visit the website at justfriendswestbridgford.wordpress.com. Attendees were treated to Christmas carols in a polished performance by The Bells of Saint Mary s, who are a group of hand-bell ringers from Bunny. Suzanne Avington, physiotherapist of County Health Partnerships (Rushcliffe), introduced attendees to gentle exercises, carried out mainly whilst seated. The exercises were a sample of typical exercises designed to promote and maintain strength and suppleness in the main joints of the body. Some exercises involved using large rubber bands, which offered varying degrees of resistance to help with strength training. After the physical activity, there was mental exercise in the form of a Christmas Quiz devised by one of our members. Light refreshments, including mince pies and Christmas cake, were enjoyed whilst attempting the quiz. The afternoon was rounded off with traditional Christmas carols sung to the accompaniment of a keyboard played by Helen, one of the Bunny hand-bell ringers. The Forum s first Open Forum of 2015 will be held on Tuesday 14th April from 2pm until 4:30pm at St Luke s Church Hall, Leahurst Road, West Bridgford (post code: NG2 6GL). Admission is free. The chair of the charity, Robin Lund, said: Hard on the heels of working with the NHS to secure the services of an on-site dentist, optician and chiropodist, we plan in January 2015 to start providing hot, nutritious cooked meals, prepared in our newly-installed kitchen. Some of the fresh produce would be sourced from the three Friary allotments. However, the start of the 2015 Education and Skills Programme for disadvantaged and unemployed people is proving difficult, until space taken by an unforeseen doubling of donations of clothing and household goods is freed up at the Friary Centre on Musters Road in West Bridgford. Robin Lund explained: The Friary continues to welcome donations but is making a crisis appeal to anyone who has, or knows of a vacant large room or other suitable premises, even on a shared basis in the West Bridgford area, where sorting can be undertaken by Friary volunteers. Rent is available. Donations can be removed on a daily basis, although overnight storage is advantageous. If you can help please contact Robin by telephoning or send an to robin.lund@ntlworld.com. 8 08 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 FUNDING FOR LOCAL WILDLIFE PROJECTS Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and their South Notts Local Group are delighted to announce that the funding for important work at Wilwell Farm Cutting and Wilford Claypits nature reserves is now in place. These sites are two of Rushcliffe s most important wildlife sites and are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest for their diverse flora and habitats. The funding is coming from a variety of sources, with the Heritage Lottery Fund providing 9,500 to carry out scrub clearance on both sites, plus supporting a series of training courses in species ID and habitat survey techniques, as well as the production of interpretive material for the two reserves. Awards for All will be funding essential access work, practical nature conservation training and equipment to the tune of 8,797. In addition, Rushcliffe Borough Council are providing another 1,750 towards habitat management on both sites. South Notts Local Group (NWT) will provide another 750 from local fundraising towards the project. When combined with the value of volunteer time, this represents a projected 28,000 boost. Speaking about the funding boost, Gordon Dyne, warden of Wilwell Farm Cutting Nature Reserve, said: The support we have received directly from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery-funded Awards for All programme will make a tremendous difference to two very important wildlife areas. It will also help ensure that local volunteers are well trained and supported in their efforts to care for these special places. This funding, along with the 1m Skylarks Nature Reserve extension - also partly funded by Heritage Lottery as well as Lafarge Tarmac - and the Fairham Brook Enhancement Project, funded by the Environment Agency and SITA Trust, represents a significant ongoing commitment to nature conservation in Rushcliffe by the Wildlife Trust. During the summer there will be exciting opportunities to go on guided walks round Wilwell and Wilford Claypits to enjoy the delights of our local birds, butterflies, dragonflies and wildflowers. Initially this winter efforts will concentrate on getting some of the essential habitat work done and the conservation training completed. If you want to know more about these reserves, or about opportunities to join the Wilford Claypits or Wilwell Nature Reserve work parties, visit he website by logging onto southnottswildlife.org.uk. The protesters were joined by local councillors and have nearly 750 signatures in support of the campaign. A protest also took place at the same time in Keyworth after the Royal Bank of Scotland announced that both banks would close on 11th March following a 20% decline in their in-bank transactions. Residents now face a near 10-mile journey to a Natwest Bank, although the Royal Bank of Scotland have said those who don t use internet banking can use post offices. Radcliffe resident, Hilda, told The Local News: I have never used internet banking in my life and don t plan too. This is a bad decision and I hope they reconsider. Sam Boote, Liberal Democrat councillor for Keyworth, said: The bank is the glue that holds the community together and if you take away that glue the community is in danger of falling apart. TV repeats are getting fewer, Some may irritate the viewer, You could complain, but none would heedya, The Lord protect us from the media. January used to bring the snow, Made our feet and fingers glow, And soon you d see the first snowdrops, Now Easter eggs are in the shops. January sales start mid-december, Maybe next year, in November! Spring-like flowers appear too soon, But others, April, May or June. Summer hols are all year round, TV ads, prepare the ground, Seaside towns are out of grace, Now far-off lands are common-place. What is happening to the seasons? Surely there must be a reason? Can these changes bring a warning? Or is it due to Global Warming? Quickly on the seasons go, Far too soon we see the snow, Santa s sleigh is being MOT d, Rudolph s wakened with a feed, Then off they go to spread good cheer, And whoops, there goes another year! NEW HEALTH CENTRE WOES Since the new practice opened, I have had to book a taxi at 3.20 each way thanks to the bus services not being convenient. Last time I was there to see my nurse, we had three powercuts whilst I was having my ECG. It is almost impossible to get to know when your doctor is working, let alone procure an appointment. So far, I have had three phone conversations and eventually managed to get a face-to-face appointment as I was due to go into hospital. The whole layout is impersonal and to my thinking it is also badly thought out. The Manor Pharmacy still processes and collects by prescription but, like everything, they seem to be delayed at the health centre. E. 24 24 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 Home nottinghamlocalnews.com RENT DEPOSITS LANDLORDS BEWARE By Curtis Parkinson In a recent case in the Court of Appeal, a landlord was not allowed to obtain possession of the premises after serving a section 21 notice. This is because he had not adequately protected the deposit in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Housing Act All well and good you might say. However, the deposit in question had been received by the landlord five years before the statutory provisions came into force. The lesson is clear. If you are holding deposits outside of one of the approved schemes, notwithstanding that you received it before the schemes came in, you will not be able to serve a valid section 21 notice upon your tenant and thus apply for possession on that ground - unless you repay the deposit to the tenant first. Take steps to protect the deposit right away. Curtis Parkinson Solicitors, Nottingham, provides advice to landlords and tenants in all aspects of letting law. Please contact Bill Martin on for more details. more papers, more ads Rushcliffe s favourite local paper where your advert should be CHANGES TO INTESTACY RULES - WHERE THERE IS NO WILL By Kenneth Curtis The law relating to where a person s money and property goes when they die without a Will was changed on the 1st October What did not change is the position of common-law partners or cohabitees. Common-law partners or cohabitees have no automatic right to receive anything - no matter how long they have lived together or even if they have children together. To receive anything at all, unless agreement can be reached with statutory beneficiaries, application has to be made to court which is expensive and there is no guarantee of success. This is extremely difficult where there are children involved who are under 18 and who cannot give consent/agreement. As such, it is extremely important to make a will to make provision for each other and if there are children to protect their interests. If there are no children, the entire estate will go to the deceased s blood relatives. Essentially, this is parents followed by siblings then nieces and nephews. There is a strict order of priority In relation to married couples and civil partners, if there are no children, the entire estate now passes to the surviving spouse/civil partner.

25 Education nottinghamlocalnews.com LOCAL STUDENT WINS PLACE AT USA UNIVERSITY Borough of Rushcliffe student Jordan Clark, aged 17, who is currently completing his A levels at South Nottinghamshire Academy, has won a place and a financial aid package to study at Northwestern University after participating in the Sutton Trust s US Programme, run in partnership with the US- UK Fulbright Commission. Last summer, Jordan was one of 175 students selected for a summer school in the USA at either Yale or Harvard University, or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), spending a week living on campus and visiting a number of other interesting American campuses. Jordan benefited from residential activities and received an intensive programme of support, delivered by the US-UK Fulbright Commission over a number of months before and after their US visit, which covered admission tests, college choices and the application process. Jordan competed with 2,200 applicants to win one of 175 places on the programme. The aim of the US programme is to encourage academically talented, low and middle income British students to consider studying at American universities. The programme cohort comes from across the UK and 70% of the students will be the first in their family to go to university. Jordan said: I still don t think it s sunk in yet. Without Sutton Trust and Fulbright none of this would have been possible. If you had told me this time last year I would be going to university in America I probably would have laughed. The appeal of America for me was largely down to the breadth of their degree programmes through the Liberal Arts approach. Then there was also the fact that there is a strong emphasis placed on extracurricular activities. February 2015 nottinghamlocalnews.com 25 great value advertising Rushcliffe s favourite local paper where your advert should be Jordan is one of 38 students who have been selected under the early-application deadline to US universities and more students will be applying by the January deadlines with results available later this spring. Of the 38 accepted students, about two-thirds of participants are from households that earn less than 25,000 a year and about 70% will be the first in their family to go to university. Sir Peter Lampl, chair of the Sutton Trust and of the Education Endowment Foundation, said: I am delighted that 38 students from our 2014 US programme have already been offered places at top American universities. In just three years the scheme has grown from 64 students participating to 175 places being available this year. As the figures show, it s not just increasing numbers of students being able to access the programme that we re celebrating it s also increasing levels of success in gaining places at these elite universities.

28 28 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 Health & Beauty nottinghamlocalnews.com TAYLORMAID DOULAS: NEW YEAR CELEBRATION TaylorMaid Doulas celebrated 14 years of helping new mums in Nottingham and the surrounding areas in January. In that time, Tracy has worked with nearly 100 mums who, for varying reasons, have chosen to have postnatal help. For many years, Tracy worked as a paediatric nurse and, as well as looking after her young patients, the role included supporting their parents through that very stressful experience. The skills she used for this on the ward are now used for supporting parents in their own home and, although their children and new baby are healthy, the physical and emotional demands on a new mum can also be stressful. The main reason mums give for using the service is that they need an extra pair of hands to help with baby and other children. This is often because grandparents, the main source of hands-on assistance, live too far away or are too elderly to be of regular support. It may also be because mum has had to have a caesarean section and needs extra care during the six-week recovery period, or it may be that mum has been unwell after the birth. For some of her clients the need for help is because they have suffered postnatal depression after a previous birth and so benefit from the extra practical and emotional support Tracy can provide. The role has also gradually evolved to offering help to mums who do not have a new baby, but do have young children, where mum has become sick, requiring extra rest and time to recuperate. This involves school and nursery runs for any children, as well as practical tasks in the home and looking after mum. Throughout her time of working as a postnatal doula, Tracy has met some lovely families and has stayed in touch with many of them, enjoying seeing the babies grow into toddlers and young children. It is a job that she truly loves and she will continue to offer support and her wealth of experience to new mums. Tracy is a Postnatal Doula (TaylorMaid Doulas) who helps mums after the birth of their baby. She is also a Night Nanny, offering respite to exhausted parents and a Sleep Consultant helping children with sleep problems. 30 30 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 Gardening nottinghamlocalnews.com FEBRUARY GARDEN NOTES By John Draper February is normally the worst month for winter weather of the year, let s hope it doesn t deliver. February should be a mixture of rain, frosts and milder spells. Soil preparation will pay dividends and sowing seeds will give you and the family a positive view of early growth. Beds & Borders Spring bulbs such as crocus, winter aconite and snowdrops should be emerging in protected areas of the garden. The pink propeller blooms of cyclamen coum will also be creating a delightful warm glow to areas that are sheltered from the cold. They like rich, well-drained soil and will easily self-seed if the conditions are just right. Millions of gardeners have realised that buying almost fully-grown plantlets in early summer ready to plant out in patio pots, hanging baskets and garden borders is not the cheapest way of buying plant material. The trend nowadays is to buy seedlings or plug plants early in the new year and grow these plants in pots indoors until they are ready to plant out in the garden. Lawncare Don t walk on the grass while it is frozen or frosted. Crushing the frozen blades of grass results in a burn that turns brown and the footsteps will be visible for weeks. In mild spells you may want to cut the grass to keep the lawn looking trim. Don t be tempted to cut the grass to it s shortest summer setting, but leave it much longer to reduce any harmful effects from subsequent frosts. Its not to early to think about your lawncare plans for the year and at least get the mower blade sharpened. After the winter, moss is prevalent on many lawns. Treat with proprietary lawn feeds that include a moss control or call a specialist lawncare company like Greener Gardens. We complete a free no-obligation survey for you. Trimming the outer edges of the lawn into shape will provide a clear definition between lush green lawn and the surrounding flower bed. Continued on page 31. NEED A RELIABLE BUILDER? 31 Continued from page 30. Grow your own If weather conditions don t allow you to get outdoors, then use the time wisely to draw up your plans for this year and order or buy seeds ready to sow when they do. When you get your veg seeds, make a month-by-month seed sowing organiser in a cardboard box or tin and store the seeds in cool, dry conditions. This way you won t forget to sow something at the right time. Many gardening books tell you to sow seeds of parsnip in February because they take a long time to germinate. Only follow this advice if you have cloches to cover the soil at least a fortnight before sowing and can be left in place until the end of March. Adding soil improver into the rows will help break down the soil and provide a good seed bed for sowing at the end of March. Buy your favourite varieties of seed potato from your local garden centre as soon as possible, before they sell out. Set them out in a single layer at the bottom of a seed tray and keep them somewhere in good light that is cool and frost-free. The potatoes will start to produce sturdy shoots ready for planting out later. Patio Tubs & Baskets Keep dead-heading winter pansies and feed occasionally with a liquid All Purpose Plant Food when the weather is mild. Paths and Drives Clean up any green mould growth on the patio slabs, brickwork or walls with one simple treatment with Patio Magic! Just water February 2015 nottinghamlocalnews.com 31 or spray on during a dry spell the active ingredient works for several weeks to give great control of mould, lichen and algae. If you would like help with any lawn or patio cleaning projects, don t hesitate to call Greener Gardens. We would be delighted to provide a no-obligation quotation. Garden Diary is written by John Draper of Greener Gardens, your local independent lawncare specialist. For help with all aspects of your lawn, call us or visit the website at greenergardens.co.uk.

32 32 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 Gardening nottinghamlocalnews.com CREATING YOUR PERFECT GARDEN Is this the year your wish to redevelop your garden comes true? The trend remains for homeowners to stay and improve their lot. After a very tough recession, two aspects to take into account are the availability of materials if you plan a DIY project, or if you plan to employ professionals, expect a longer lead-time for them becoming available. Homeowners generally want to move things forward once they have made that decision to have home improvements. The impulse can sometimes be to employ those that are more readily available. While understandable, researching and waiting for the contractor that best fits your wishes is still the best way of safeguarding the investment you are about to make. If you cannot find suitable recommendations, good businesses will be members of trade bodies or linked to the main manufacturers, in our case Marshalls Paving & Namgrass (the artificial grass supplier). These relationships benefit you, the customer, as you have leading industry guarantees - in both cases 10 years - from the manufacturers; the manufacturer as they have their products your leaflets delivered inside from 25 per 1000 properly installed and the contractor. We design and build competitively-priced gardens to a very high standard and have done so for 25 years. 34 34 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 Gardening nottinghamlocalnews.com RECONSTRUCTING A NEGLECTED LAWN By Prograss Quite often we are invited to do one of our free lawn health checks on a lawn that is in such bad condition that the customer has given up and is almost at the stage of returfing or landscaping the area to have no lawn at all. However, all is not lost because Prograss have a tried and tested method for reconstructing neglected lawns to their former glory and spring is the ideal time to do this. 1) We would do an initial intensive treatment to control moss and weeds, plus tonic any existing healthy grass. This would prepare the lawn for what is to come. 2) Two to four weeks later, when the weather conditions are suitable, we would return with heavy-duty commercial machinery to first hollow tine aerate the area with two passes to reduce any compaction and also break up the surface so the root zone of the grass can feed and breathe. 3) We would then do an intensive scarification using a 6bhp commercial scarifier to remove any dead moss, thatch and weeds to create a perfect surface for the overseed that is to follow. This process would also chop up the tines left by the aeration and create a free topsoil/nutrient feed that will further benefit the lawn as it goes back into the ground as uncompacted soil. 4) We would then do an overseed using a suitable seed, for example shade tolerant seed if area is affected by shade, fescue/rye mix if children will be playing on lawn etc. We would also apply a pre-seed fertiliser to encourage seed germination. 5) This would then be left for nature and the customer to do their part by watering and keeping the area clear, so within a few weeks the lawn will start to recover. Although we are always keen to point out that this process is not an overnight one and depending on conditions the lawn could take a while to be where we want it to be. 6) Thereafter, Prograss would then do seasonal treatments and on each visit we would do whatever the lawn requires to continue its recovery. If you would like Prograss, your local, independent lawn company, to come and do a free no-obligation lawn health check on your lawn, whatever the condition, please contact us on or visit us on our website at pro-grass.com. 39 LOCAL FOOTBALL CLUB MAKE CHARITY DONATION Ruddington Village Football Club decided to raise funds for their own charity last year - Ruddington s Defibrillators and British Heart Foundation community Project - to enable them to contribute, along with Ruddington Parish Council, to buy two defibrillators for the Ruddington Village community. One defibrillator was placed at the sports facility at Elms Park and one at St Peter s Rooms in the centre of the Village. This is very important to all members as one of their managers lives was saved with the aid of a defibrillator last year. They held a number of events including a senior Christmas raffle, a charity football match on Boxing Day and junior raffle. There was also an action of a signed football. The club also designed and sold hats with their own charity logo on. In total they raised 2,738 with 800 going towards the defibrillators and 1,938 being donated to the charity. Helena Mair from the British Heart Foundation made a visit to the club last month to collect the cheque. Ruddington Village FC would like to thank all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes; The Red Heart for letting us hold the raffle draws, Brookside Auto services for their donation of 200, Manchester United for a signed football, Leicester City, Nottingham Arena, Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, Tektronics for the Christmas hamper and Reydon Sports. 40 40 nottinghamlocalnews.com February 2015 Sports News nottinghamlocalnews.com ROUND THE BRIDGES RACE ON THE TRENT Twenty-six members of Nottingham Kayak Club competed in the annual round the bridges knockout race. Paired up in 13 doubles crews, they raced from the clubhouse to Trent Bridge, round Lady Bay Bridge and back to the clubhouse, with last crew knocked out on each lap. Several crews showed their dominance in the early rounds, but there was plenty of excitement at the back with crews determined not to go out. First out were Tom Corden & Katie Shorrock. A crash under Trent Bridge in one of the early rounds saw three crews tied up, losing precious time to the crews who managed to slip round, leading to Pete Ilett & Cathy Howell being eliminated. They were swiftly followed by Sarah Millest & Abbie Durrant, Jacob Sliwa & Dave Hadley and Pat Allinson & Jane Millar. A battle of the girls was then on at the back, with Caroline Jones & Alison Chmiel clinging on one lap longer than Kat Wilson & Kasia Chmiel. Despite nearly sinking, Andrew Doughty & Nicky Cresser lasted one lap more than Chris Carter & Taal Millard. This left four contenders to fight it out to determine the three crews to compete for the prize money in the final lap. Losing this sprint to the line was the two-man crew of Phil Dean & Ozzie Chmiel. The remaining crews stormed away from the start line on their final lap. After the first turn, an early lead was taken by Zyggy Chmiel & Matilda Enoch a gap which only grew. After the final turn, they comfortably took the win and the money. They were followed over the line by Hayleigh Mason & Stan Chmiel, with third place going to Olympic silver medallist Campbell Walsh & Ricky Millar.
