2 Introduction The L2 Travel & Tourism course is taken over one year and results in the BTEC First Award at Level 2. The course also includes work experience and an opportunity to improve English and Maths performance, along with sector specific experience and skills. The Award BTEC Firsts in Travel and Tourism provide a practical, real-world approach to learning and developing specific knowledge and skills learners need to work successfully in the industry. Students will present their work in a variety of ways, including:- Producing leaflets and posters Taking part in role-plays and discussions Face-to-face or audio-visual presentations Field Trips Units of Study There are 4 units of study the unit number and title is taken form the awarding body s reference document. Students will study Units 1, 2, 4 and 5. Unit 1: The UK Travel and Tourism Sector Travel and tourism is one of the UK s largest sectors, currently employing over 2.5 million people. In this unit, students will gain an understanding of the range of organisations involved with different types of tourism in the UK, including their roles, how they work together and how they use technology to meet changing customer needs. This unit is assessed through examination. Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations This unit will give students an understanding of what the UK travel and tourism industry has to offer to tourists. It will enable them to identify and locate tourist destinations, major UK airports and seaports, as well as to discover sea routes and airport locations. This unit is assessed by portfoilio.
3 Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations Similar to Unit 2, this module examines destinations form an international perspective. This unit is assessed by portfoilio. Unit 5: Factors affecting Worldwide Travel and Tourism This unit is dedicated to the research and study of the influences on this industry and destinations. It covers areas such as time zones, climatic conditions, seasonality, health issues and visas and passports. This unit is assessed by portfoilio. This is the text book for this award.
4 Transition Pack: Examination Preparation Industries in the Travel & Tourism Sector: TASK For each sector, list the Sector, Define the activity, Give examples of Companies/Organisations, where appropriate list the attributes, advantages/disadvantages and through research show the trends in this sector. The sectors are:- 1. Tour Operators 2. Travel Agents 3. Online travel Services 4. Passenger Transport 5. Accommodation 6. Visitor Attractions 7. Arts and Entertainment 8. Tourism Agencies Extension: You may need to do a summary for the Sub Divisions of each sector for example Under Passenger Transport have 3 sections one for Road one for Rail and Sea and Air. The first one is done for you: Tour Operators Sector Name Definition/Role Example of a Company/Organisation Attributes and Characteristics Advantages Disadvantages Trends Eg Tour Operators A business which puts holidays together, assembles and controls the different elements of a package to be sold through travel agents and directly to customers. 3 Types of Tour Operator:- Domestic, outbound, inbound Products include:- Travel, accommodation, meals, transfers, excursions, escorts Thompson Tour Operators put together holiday packages. Traditional companies get economies of scale ie lower average cost by buying in bulk, and then sell to travel agents who are close to the customer and have the benefit of local knowledge and proximity to provide personal service. They tend to be big companies, some of which also own Travel agents to sell the products they put together. Can get economies of scale They usually est for quality The holidays come organised for the customer May feel like a cattle transfer by customers? May be more costly than the customer going direct Heavy competition as internet sales direct to customers takes off Trend towards specialist niche tour operators who have only limited economies of scale but do have specialist knowledge. Customers may trend away as they feel more confident to book themselves. Trend to the customer choosing Tour Operators after some customers experience difficulties compiling holidays themselves after terrorism, natural disaster, war breaking out etc they may want the support of the Tour Operator. Notes & Key terms Trend to Vertical Integration, ie taking out the middle man, Tour Operators also becoming Travel agents eg Thomas Cook, or buying airlines or hotels to reduce their costs. Transfers = Movement of passengers from one location to another, often to and from airports
