1 P0018 State of Missouri Collection 486 photographs This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at INTRODUCTION Over 400 original photos created for the 1904 publication on Missouri at the time of the World s Fair by Walter Williams; shows all aspects and counties in Missouri. DONOR INFORMATION The collection was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Walter Williams, Sarah Lockwood Williams, and unknown donors on date unknown. COPYRIGHT This collection is in the public domain. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This set of photographic prints was published as illustrations in The State of Missouri: An Autobiography, edited by Walter Williams and published by E.W. Stephens in The book was produced by the Missouri Commission for the occasion of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. It was distributed widely through the Exposition and public schools, intended both as a history of Missouri and a proud account of its best contemporary features. Each Missouri county is represented through images of its people, landmarks, or scenery. The collection also covers Missouri s major cities, notable people, government, industry, business, education, and arts. The majority of the photographs are mounted albumen or silver gelatin prints of varying sizes. Many images include people, yet individuals are rarely identified by name and are more frequently caption as a group or the image is identified more generally. Photographic prints in the collection retain crop lines and other markings used for editing for the publication process. Although the photos are undated, The State of Missouri indicates that they were all created around the time of publication, ca The size of the photographs was reduced from the original prints for reproduction in the book; researchers will find much greater detail when viewing the original photographs. Photographs are arranged by identifier.
