Churchill Downs Churchill Downs is best known as home to the greatest two minutes in sports. The Kentucky Derby is the oldest continuous sporting event in the United States, hosting 132 Derbies.

Louisville Extreme Park The Louisville Extreme Park is one of the nation's best skate parks, with awesome features including a 24 foot full-pipe! The park offers a great balance of street-style, transition style and vert. The public skatepark is owned by Louisville Metro Government and is operated by Metro Parks. The park, completed in April 2002, includes 40,000 square feet of outdoor concrete skating surface and a wooden vert ramp, along with restrooms. The park is open 24 hours a day, year-round. Slugger Field Slugger Field, home of the Louisville Bats, is one of the most exciting and attractive sites in minor league baseball. Named after the popular Louisville Slugger baseball bat, the stadium offers something for fans of all ages. With its retro-classic design, Slugger Field has quickly become one of the most admired parks in all of baseball. Page 8

14 Directions if Traveling I-65 South: 1. Take I-65 South (Toward Nashville), to the Arthur Street exit (Exit 134). If you reach the Fairgrounds / Watterson Expressway exits, you have gone too far. 2. Continue to the first stop sign, Arthur street and Brandeis Avenue. 3. Turn right onto Brandeis Avenue / Cardinal Boulevard. 4. Turn left onto Floyd Street. 5. The first building on your right is the Student Activities Center. 6. Turn right at the first entrance to the Student Activities Center. 7. This will be a circular drive beside the three-story parking garage. Park in the visitor's lot in the garage. (Do not turn into the garage at the light.) Directions if Traveling I-65 North: (I-65 is accessible from I-71, I-64 and I-264) 1. Take I-65 North (Toward Indianapolis) to the second Eastern Parkway exit (west 133B). 2. There is a stop sign at the end of the exit ramp. 3. Veer right, following the curve around to the traffic light at Eastern Parkway. (Denny's is on the corner). 4. Turn right. 5. Continue on Eastern Parkway until it dead-ends at Third Street. 6. Turn Right. 7. Continue on Third Street to the third traffic light at Cardinal Boulevard. 8. Turn right. 9. Continue on Cardinal Boulevard to the second traffic light. 10. Turn right onto Floyd Street. 11. The first building on your right is the Student Activities Center. 12. Turn right at the first entrance to the Student Activities Center. 13. 18 Cherokee Park: 745 Cochran Hill Rd., Cherokee Park's main feature is the 2.4-mile Scenic Loop, with separate lanes for vehicle traffic (one-way) and recreational users. One of the original parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park provides a pastoral setting amid rolling hills, open meadows and woodlands of the Beargrass Creek valley. For vehicles on the Scenic Loop (or recreational users moving in the direction of vehicle traffic), the secret to navigating the park is to keep turning left to stay in the park, or keep turning right to leave the park. Amenities: Archery range, Ballfield, Basketball (3), Dog Run (fenced off-leash area), Fishing lake, Grills, Hiking trails, Hogan's Fountain, Horseback riding trails, Horseshoe pit (2), Mountain biking trails, Nettleroth Bird Sanctuary, Picnic shelters (3), Picnic tables, Playgrounds, Restrooms, Scenic Loop (2.4-mile multi-use path), Spray pool, Tennis (2), Walking Path (3) Iroquois Park: 2120 Rundill Rd., (Taylor Boulevard and Southern Parkway) Iroquois Park was planned by Frederick Law Olmsted as a "scenic reservation" of forested hillsides and breathtaking vistas. The park features the WPA-era Iroquois Amphitheater, an open-air theater that was recently remodeled to accommodate 2,407 people. 20 LOUISVILLE CLIMATE: Louisville is located on the northern limit of the humid subtropical climate. Summers are typically hot and humid with mildly warm evenings. The mean annual temperature is 56 F (13 C), with an average annual snowfall of 16.4 inches (41 cm) and an average annual rainfall of inches (1131 mm). The wettest seasons are the spring and summer, although rainfall is fairly constant all year round. During the winter, particularly in January and February, several days of snow can be expected, allowing for winter sports. January is the coldest month with average highs of 41 F and average lows of 25 F (5 to 4 C) and July the hottest month with average high and low temperatures from 87 to 69.8 F (31 and 21 C). In any season, temperatures can vary widely day by day because of Louisville's location where many fronts often converge. Severe weather is not uncommon; the area is prone to almost all types of nontropical weather extremes, including tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, ice storms and extreme heat and cold.
