2 President s Message As President, I felt it was incumbent of me to check out as many TBN rides and activities as possible so I have been on Country Cruises, Tourist, Saturday morning and Tuesday Ravine Rides; plus I attended the Kick off Breakfast, Cyclon and the Annual Barbeque Picnic. Although I have not managed to attend every class of ride and every activity, I feel that I have participated in a good cross section of what TBN has to offer. As a former teacher and principal, I have the urge to create a report card for TBN old habits die hard. I believe that in order to take TBN to the next level, TBN ers need to be honest about how the club is perceived so that improvements can be made so let me rate TBN on a variety of criteria. Subject Status Comments/Suggestions Strategies Variety of Rides Quality of Maps Riding Etiquette With the number of different rides on offer, there should be a ride to suit most riders. Wednesday Wheelies are creating maps that are easy to follow, up todate and available on the website for downloading to a GPS, smart phone or in hard copy. None. There is interest in the following: A slow paced ride for experienced riders who may be injured or physically unable to go fast. Sunday morning rides starting at 8:30 and finishing by noon, in the heat of the summer, for Easy Roller and Tourist level rides that start just outside the city. Some maps, that TBN is using, need to be updated. Helpful for riders to be able to download the maps to personal devices. An issue that needs to be addressed. I was recently told that TBN ers are identifiable because they are all over the road. Anything is possible if someone is willing to coordinate the Walking Wounded group. Volunteers are needed to research, develop, coordinate and lead these rides. Encourage members to use the Forum for pop up rides. The Board is looking at developing a common format for maps with the capability of downloading the maps. Volunteers are needed to research new routes and create maps. The Education portfolio will provide hints on safe cycling practices. All members need to focus on safety at all times. Welcoming New Riders The Easy Roller and Leisure Wheelers groups are good at ensuring that no one is dropped. Rides at the Tourist level often have the attitude of every person for themselves. At the beginning of rides, new members need to be welcomed and encouraged to ride with others at their level. Identification as TBN Members Volunteers Over the years, TBN has had many different jersey designs that members could purchase. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the club. Quick Release Sep 13 to Mar 14 Page 2 A cycling jersey is needed that identifies TBN members that everyone will wear with pride. More volunteers are needed in many areas. Look out for the Design a TBN Jersey contest and then vote on the jersey design. As a Board, we are looking at subsidizing the cost of the jerseys so that every member will want to purchase a TBN jersey. If you have not volunteered before, then it is time to put your hand up! From the bottom of my heart, I need to thank all those who do volunteer; you are all terrific.

3 Subject Status Comments/Suggestions Strategies TBN Website User friendly. Very accessible for coordinators. The Forum is not utilized to its full potential for exchanging ideas on promoting TBN. More volunteers on the Tech Committee could help us bring the website to the next level. Giving Back As ambassadors at the Ride for Heart, we provide a very useful service. There are so many people in our society who need help and if in some small way we could help them, it would strengthen us individuals and as a club. TBN should consider creating a charity event to give back to those who need. Obviously, a coordinator and volunteers are needed to organize such an event, to ensure same is well implemented. 4 Toronto Niagara Toronto Overnight June 15 16, 2013 It s challenging, fun, energizing and convenient. One of the classic rides of the TBN season is the TNTO, in which riders leave on a Saturday morning from High Park in Toronto, or from Stoney Creek east of Hamilton, and ride to Niagara Falls. After an overnight stay, they ride back the next day. Well, most of them, anyway. The ride is the challenging, fun, energizing part and the convenient part is that riders luggage is transported for them and accommodation is arranged. The convenience was provided by long time TBN member, Brenda Porter, who orchestrated other volunteers and the planning. immediately, we faced The Wall the climb up the Niagara Escarpment. Above the Escarpment, there was surprisingly little traffic as we rode along quiet paved roads to the Niagara River, then south on the Parkway for a pause at the Falls, then up Clifton Hill to the Rodeway Inn Fallsview. The promised watermelon was ready, along with a cake for the 20th Anniversary of TNTO. Most people went for dinner at one of the many restaurants in Niagara Falls and I heard some talk of visiting the casino, but as far as I can tell, most made it an early night. Although I ve been part of TBN for about 20 years, and this was the 20th anniversary for TNTO, it was my first time doing the ride. As I hadn t yet done the 1,000 km of riding recommended as training for the long ride (167 km each way), I opted to start from Stoney Creek (about 90 km each way). The Children s Aid Society generously provided the use of their parking lot for TBN members to park their vehicles overnight. After leaving my overnight bag, I joined a group to pedal off through the streets of Stoney Creek. Almost Sunday dawned to rain and much scurrying about by some people seeking alternative transportation home. Most riders just pulled on their rain gear and set off. I found the ride north from Niagara Falls, along the Parkway to Niagara on the Lake, quite pleasant the rain kept the other tourists indoors rather than driving. The rain stopped late morning, the sun came out, and the ride through wine and peach country was wonderful. My cycling has fallen off quite a bit, but as a retired Centurion, it is almost impossible to give up the roads entirely. At the last Presqu'ile camping weekend, at least two friends suggested that I sign up for Cyclon, and as I ve helped out organizing Cyclon in the past, I decided to heed their encouragement and go. I had been to the Peterborough campus in the past as part of the Tour to Trent, and thought this might be a way for me to get re acquainted with some old friends, and maybe do a real bike ride this time around. I was greeted by some old friends, and made some new ones on Friday afternoon; did a mini Ice cream ride and was on the leading edge of a mini cyclone, including vertical winds and hail, but managed to sneak back into the foyer of the residence just before the maelstrom struck! There was even a little flood km. Yes, reconnected with some old pals; met new friends; shared some laughs at the Friday night icebreaker; actually stole some chocolate bars like a junior klepto ; reminded everyone why Skor bars are named Skor bars, and pumped up a few flats and did a ride on Saturday with a pal, then got re acquainted with some old pals, and met some new ones. 37 km. Sunday, met new friends, helped out pumping up a few flats in the morning (as a continued penance for stealing chocolate bars) and did a ride with a pal. not counting trying to keep up with Paul and Brenda and Donna on the dance floor after the beautiful banquet they flattened me. 23km. Monday slept in, helped pump up a few tires; I think I still owe a new pal a Twix chocolate bar that I stole on Friday night.. grrr.. they may not want it as it is still in the bottom of my cycling footlocker... 0 km, but hey, total for weekend km OK, I hear YOU!! Stop shouting already, some of you did that Friday night!!!! I ve done quite a bit of charity volunteering and community work in the past, but I have to tell you, the most fun and enjoyment I ever had out of being part of any volunteer organization was being part of the TBN, so I will see you all at Cyclon in Ottawa again next year! 6 Cyclon was the best yet again! August 2 5, 2013 If by any chance we had a conversation at Cyclon this year, you ll know that I ve attended Cyclon for 21 years and, by the way, that is 21 years consecutively. You ll know that because I made sure to tell you within the first two minutes of our conversation! I can t boast much about cycling since I haven t done much in the past few years, so I figure I can at least boast about the number of Cyclons I ve attended. Cyclon was held in Peterborough for the second time that our courageous Cyclon Co directors, Neil Connelly and George Witte, added to the Cyclon circuit for the first time last year. There were close to 200 attendees that enjoyed a wonderful weekend of cycling, socializing, food and fun in perfect summer weather. Just like previous Cyclons, I personally thought this was the best one yet! Maybe I m biased but I love Cyclon. People ask me What s changed at Cyclon over the years? Friday afternoon rides in the old days were unofficial, for those lucky few who could get off work, on Friday, and arrive early. This has changed over the last few years as there were three official rides, with ride leaders, conveniently scheduled throughout the afternoon. The Friday evening social has also evolved. In previous years it could range from very simple e.g. snacks in the registration area with no organized meet and greet activities, to elaborate games that involved many rolls of toilet paper, scavenger hunts, or 3 legged races. This year the meet and greet activities were fun and civilized, involving chocolate bars what could be wrong with anything involving chocolate? The Saturday night hike introduced a few years ago was offered again. Massage sessions were back on the program for weary cyclists who got in early enough on Saturday and Sunday to book same. Plus great stretch classes were offered too. The bonfire on the residence lawn on Friday and Saturday night was a great new idea albeit rained out on Friday night. Saturday was a lovely night for it and some people brought and played musical instruments. Another feature this year was an established area for the after ride receptions on Saturday and Sunday. The Gathering Space was an ideal venue with wholesome snacks and sweet trays too. This arrangement was a big improvement over last year and appeared popular. In addition to these newer features, the familiar Cyclon program offered lots of rides to choose from, biking workshops and the legendary dinner dance on Sunday night, where the speeches and appreciations were just right, the prizes awesome and the dance floor hopping all evening. Why do I attend every year? Cyclon was the compelling reason I joined the TBN in the autumn of That year Cyclon was ultimately not considered a success and was never repeated at that location, however, as a newbie I thought it was fantastic! The reasons I keep coming back The camaraderie that includes some healthy peer pressure. To share memories of past cycling trips/rides and plans for future cycling trips. The weekend itinerary and route selections offer something for everyone. I even attended the year I couldn t cycle due to a broken leg so I volunteered instead of cycling. An opportunity to get a break from the city and the regular club ride routes. A great opportunity for a reunion of long time friends, to reconnect with people who ve been away from cycling and to meet new people. To explore a new area for cycling, plus the local sights and activities. I was heavily involved in organizing Cyclon for six years until I have met a lot of club members, over the years, thanks to volunteering in this role and others. I like the reunion opportunity at Cyclon; also to support the event and see what the new committee brings to the event. I believe that this event, more than any other club event, represents the club logo of Meet People. Ride. Have Fun. A special reunion story it was terrific to see my friends Jan Krulewitz and Alan Burke at Cyclon this year. I met them on the autumn city walks that I did in They were club volunteers and attended Cyclon regularly. We ve been in contact over the years but haven t cycled together for many years. This year they came with their 14 year old daughter Katherine, a budding cyclist; plus their first time back to Cyclon in, you probably guessed it, 15 years! Quick Release Sep 13 to Mar 14 Page 6

7 Thousands of volunteer hours go into creating a successful Cyclon. Planning, site selection, meals, route research, map making, entertainment, logistics, evaluation, web page, online registration, communications and more. The Cyclon committee worked hard to pull it all together and the ride leader and support team stepped in to help orchestrate the event, over the weekend. To all the volunteers, thank you for doing an amazing job this year. For those who didn t volunteer be sure to thank these folk and consider volunteering for next year. It s not all work, its fun too and they ve already started planning Cyclon 14. I m a career Cyclon participant so it s been 21 amazing years and I don t plan to retire so I ll see you in Ottawa in Its going to be the best one ever, I m sure of it. 8 Annual Barbecue Picnic at Toogood Pond Sunday, August 11 This year the barbecue picnic was a great event unmarred by a spot of rain. The 20 strong Leisure Wheelers won kudos for being the first group to arrive, at around am. Judging by the food consumed, more than 150 members arrived in relays. The chefs, Joe Hickey and Brian McLean, served up 150 hamburgers, plus hot dogs and veggie burgers, using an array of two large barbeques and a portable one. Some members were just content with the four types of fresh salads from Hearty Catering, an organic, fair trade, and local sourced food company. The group also managed to get through six watermelons and assorted snacks, while chatting with their fellow TBN ers, enjoying the fresh, sunny weather, and trying to resist feeding the intrepid black and white duck that came to join us. Chief cook and caterer, Joe Hickey, points out that he tried something new this year: six ounce uncooked burgers as opposed to the three ounce precooked burger that tend to be somewhat dry and meagre. As the six ouncer took longer to cook, the line up was sometimes long, but people were good humoured and seemed to think that it was worth the wait. Joe asks you to be sure to sign up on line next year to help with the planning and also looks forward to your comments, favourable or not. In Joe s own words: If we can improve we will as we want to make as many people happy as possible. A special mention to Bob Everett for his contribution to a very successful event that included delivering supplies, setting up and taking down. Three years of rain deserve three years of sunshine, so the outlook is rosy for a great picnic next year. Jean O Grady & Joe Hickey Fire & Ice The park was pretty quiet, except for a few rambling groups, and I was beginning to wonder whether or not I got the date right! As I rode down the path, I saw all the coolers stacked up, rode over, and I was greeted by Joe Hickey: You re the first to arrive! As I looked around, I realized some big ducks were actually the first to make it toward the food table. Ducks so big some visitors thought they were geese. Joe was busy about trying to de thaw the big burger patties, and not destroy them in the process; I think I saw at least one stack of frozen burgers go up in flames in a barbecue when the paper patty separators caught on fire. That was the theme around the two barbecue grills for the balance of the event: napalm and frozen burgers, fire and ice. As the crowds built Brian Mclean was busy on lead barbecue, but was handicapped by a very short spatula. He was cooking up to 15 or more burgers at a time and every once in a while Brian would open the barbecue hood, a huge mushroom cloud would burst upwards, and a conflagration of flame would almost swallow him whole. He d just nonchalantly turn away, eyebrows and hair singed, and say Smokin! I tried my best to keep up with Brian and Joe as I was splitting frozen patties. In the end, I think Joe said we served about 170 burgers, so patty account aside, we had a great turnout and lots of great conversation. I had a chance to re acquaint with a few old friends like Jack, a Centurion buddy I used to ride to St. George with, back in the days when there really were dragons, and Howard Chan who s been teaching English in Korea. It was my first Toogood Pond barbecue for two decades, so it felt special to be there, also Jack mentioned it was his first TBN event since the old days! It was a great event, the weather held up so no rain this time around, and Joe and the volunteers had the food very well prepared and proportioned, so many thanks to them and everyone who rode out to attend. 9 Toronto Niagara Home Saturday, August 17 What a beautiful day: Perfect temperature, no wind, mild sunshine so a perfect day for cycling! I had cycled from High Park to Coronation Park where the ride started; the usually crowded Martin Goodman trail was deserted so a good chance for a fast spin! With my hands on the drops, I hammered onto the pedal and within 15 minutes, I was in Coronation Park! I am getting old but I can still cycle. Spirits were high so I told myself that I am going to have a perfect day. It was 7:15; there were couple of riders on location already and, as usual, we exchanged laughs about cycling stories. The remaining riders gradually filed in. I took a glance at the bikes; beside the usual road bikes, there were three mountain bikes, three hybrids and a twenty inch wheel Dahon folding bike! You know the kind that has a stem stick three feet into the air to connect to the handlebar; the stem of that bike looked like it would snap at anytime! Is this rider going to ride 160 km to Niagara Falls with this thing? Are you kidding me? The three guys on mountain bikes looked strong muscular types and should have a chance but still 160 km riding on knobby tires on a heavy bike, I had my doubts. I did not see any problem with the two thin tire hybrids but the other hybrid looked like trouble as the lady riding it carried a heavy back pack. Plus she sits low on the saddle but the handle was set high. So with the weight of a heavy back pack, it looked like she was heading to the sky! Riding 160 km in that position made my heightened spirit cool off completely! I did the usual announcement but my head was thinking about those trouble bikes so I totally forgot to ask the non member to sign the waiver that I had in my back pocket! However, I did tell them that this is a selfsupported ride, that there is no leader or sweep and we ride/stay together as long as we could. It is obviously very hard to ask the faster riders to wait for you or the slower riders to catch up. The best way to enjoy this type of ride is to find riders who ride at your speed and you will be like moving magnets that stick together all the way to Niagara Falls! With some doubt, we headed off to Niagara Falls. To my surprise, the two trouble bike made it to the Tim Hortons in Grimsby without any problems but one fancy road bike dropped out! The lady with the heavy back pack was really struggling, as I could see it in her face, so told her that the best thing was to find a slower rider that was willing to ride with her since the main group could not possibly wait for her. All our riders, except that fancy road bike, made it to Niagara Falls thankfully! I arrived at Applebees first as I took a short cut and was not bothered with seeing the falls; all I wanted was a cold beer. That was the best tasting beer I have ever had and could not remember any beer tasting better than this one! I could not pass the opportunity of 25% saving offered by the restaurant so I ordered a second one but the taste of the second one wasn t as good even though it came out from the same tap! After the experience of last year, I promptly paid my bill and headed off to the GO station. We had plenty of time to load the bikes and headed to the upper coach for the comfy seats. I quickly fell on sleep dreaming my next adventure while others were singing about their proud moment in their cycling journey! Big thanks to the organizer of such a good time. Plus, any one who can get a 25% discount for my beer is my hero! Jimmy Yeung Ed s Note: A group of Tourist riders departed an hour later and met up with Jimmy's group in Niagara Falls. 18 Friday Night Skating Typically skate from 6 8 pm, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. The skating season starts and ends at indoor rinks as the outdoor ice is of poor quality. The season starts on November 20 and ends on March 14 at York Mills Arena that has adult skating from 6:45 8:45 pm and across the street from a Richtree restaurant. There are 16 Friday nights in between with skates at Harbour Front, Sam Smith skating trail, Cedarena, Richmond Green, Gage Park and more. Car pooling is arranged for venues away from TTC stations. The skating venue is posted on the TBN website by the previous Saturday, as well as directions and possible après restaurants. Quite often more people show up at the après restaurant than on the ice! Albeit Friday night skating is a TBN event, one does not have to be a member as we skate on public ice so non members are more than welcome and so are all levels of ability. As soon as it is too cold for spandex, lace up those skates and come skating!
