5 Page 5 Monroe Business Guide Thousands flock to Swift Night The Vaux s Swifts are migrating north and will soon arrive in Monroe to roost at the Wagner Center (formerly Frank Wagner Elementary School) chimney. Monroe boosts the second largest congregation of these birds in North America, drawing birds by the thousands each evening. Monroe is very fortunate to have these wonderful migrating birds come to the city twice every year (spring and fall) and to provide an amazing opportunity to observe an act of nature right in our own neighborhood. Admirers of all ages bring their cameras, binoculars, folding chairs and picnic blankets and spread out on the lawn to watch as thousands of birds funnel into the chimney without ever colliding. People have been known to come from as far as North Carolina to see this amazing feat. The Monroe Swift Watch committee and the Monroe Swift Night committee enlist volunteers to monitor the numbers of Vaux s Swifts that enter the chimney each night during the two migrations and to help at Monroe Swift Night on Sunday, Sept. 9. This year at the Monroe Swift Night There will be light snacks and beverages available s t a r t i n g at 5 p.m. Volunteers are needed to count the swifts as they enter the chimney, monitor the d a y t i m e comings and goings of the swifts and help answer questions a t S w i f t Night. Volunteers are also sought to help with the Monroe Swifts website and possibly, the chimney cameras and temperature monitors. For more information visit Doug Ramsay photo Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas (left) checks out a sculpture titled Wagner Swifts during a dedication ceremony at the intersection of Main and Lewis Streets on Jan. 7, The metal sculpture was designed by artist Kevin Pettelle. North Kelsey rezoned for residential Vacant North Kelsey parcels will be renamed and rezoned to attract developers the city hopes will in turn entice hundreds of new tenants and businesses. City officials approved a plan to change area zoning along Tjerne Place, a road between Chain Lake Road and Kelsey Street. The rezoned area will be called Tjerne Place and feature a village green. The zoning changes mean builders can construct fivestory multi-family dwellings atop one story parking structures in the formerly business-only zone. The city will list 10 parcels totaling 11 acres and hopes to sell them all to a single developer, though it will not exclude buyers interested in smaller purchases, said city administrator Deborah Knight. If things go according to plan, the parcels will go on the market in June, and deals could close by the end of 2019, with construction kicking off in The parcels include about 54,000 square feet slated for retail and offices, and room for 202 units in multi-family developments. The city is a motivated seller: it is due to pay approximately $1.4 million on the properties in September with a $2.9 million payment to follow in September Angela Cooper-McCorkle

7 Page 7 Monroe Business Guide Fair Days Parade and Market August 25 The 81st Annual Fair Day s Parade will be Saturday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. and is all about our Summer Days & Country Ways! The Fair Day s Parade brings a festive atmosphere to the community of Monroe. The whole town shows up because the Fair Days Parade is the official kickoff that the Evergreen State Fair is in town! The Parade is a wonderful showcase of local bands, drill teams, sports teams, businesses, non-profits and first responders all coming together to celebrate all that is Monroe in the summer. Whether this is your first parade of your 50th, there is something for everyone! Just follow the herd to downtown Monroe in the morning, then head on over to the Evergreen State Fair afterwards. To the delight and amusement of thousands of families, residents and guests more than 50 groups of local businesses, organizations, associations and groups will make their way down Main Street from 178th Ave SE to N. Blakely Street showing off their country pride and enthusiasm for their community! With the direction of the Chamber Director, Board members and new business owners they have been able to bring fresh ideas to the Parade and celebration surrounding the Evergreen State Fair. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Committee is also pleased to announce the return of the ever-popular Fair Days Market starting at 9 a.m. in front of the Wagner Performing Arts Center. The Market will close shortly after the parade to allow residents and visitors plenty of time to get their Evergreen State Fair time in! For those wanting to make a weekend of the event, there are plenty of great places to stay at and take in all the great events and activities the Evergreen State Fair and our great city have to offer. Please visit www. choosemonroe.com for more information. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce would also like to send out a huge Thank You to all the Fair Days Parade major sponsors, contributors and supporters. Without the support of organizations such as the City of Monroe, Evergreen State Fairgrounds, Monroe Public Schools, Republic Services, Speedway Chevrolet, Union Bank, Walmart, Sam s Cats and Dogs, Naturally and of course the many volunteers that help keep the parade moving and organized, this amazing event would not be possible. Volunteers are needed and much appreciated. Please call for more information or visit www. choosemonroe.com/parade. Evergreen State Fairgrounds The fun at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds isn t confined to just the Fair (Aug. 23-Sept. 3). No, the grounds are used all year round. There are animal shows, both domestic and farm; swap meets, collectibles and special interest shows such as quilt shows, woodcarving shows, hobby shows and craft markets, as well as the popular auto racing at the Evergreen Speedway. For more information on current events call or visit the fairgrounds online at org. LED lights installed in Monroe The city picked up an $11,000 state grant to convert the streetlights along Kelsey Street, Chain Lake Road and Tjerne Place from sodium lights to LEDs. The numerous benefits include that LEDs last longer and use less energy. The city pencils out that changing these streetlights will save $12.30 a day in energy costs alone, or around $4,400 a year. The Relight Washington program is administered through the state Transportation Improvement Board and is intended for small cities. The program has switched out 34,000 lights statewide since starting in 2015, said TIB executive director Ashley Probart. The board last year paid for switching 10 street lights to LEDs in Monroe along West Main Street. Thunderbird RV Resort & Campground Located on the beautiful Skykomish River.
