Run-Walk Events purpose is to organize in lawful, fun, and world class running and walking events to raise awareness of the inactivity epidemic in young people and to support non-profit organizations whose structure and goals encourage young people and others to run or walk on a regular basis. About The 100 Mile Club The 100 Mile Club is the benefiting organization for Race Across USA. It is a national, school-based program with the goal to run or walk 100 miles during a school year. The program also teaches kids life skills, goal setting, and self-esteem while making physical activity a healthier habit for life. 100 Mile Club has members in over 700 schools in nearly every US State as well as three other countries Canada, New Zealand and Japan! About Race Across USA According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. At the present time, 12.5 million children, ages 6-19 in the United States are obese. Many more are overweight. Starting January 16, 2015, an international team of athletes will begin a 4 1/2 month journey, running the equivalent of 117 back-toback marathons across the United States with the goal of sparking a renaissance in childhood health and fitness. Runners will run stages that are approximately 26.2 miles (a marathon) long and participate in expos with students and the local community to get the word out. The event will start in Huntington Beach, California and pass through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and finally Washington D.C. On June 2, the runners will finish the day at the White House in Washington D.C. The coast-to-coast running distance will be 3,080 miles.

3 Welcome to North Carolina, the 11th state on the Race Across USA route. North Carolina is a state in the Southeastern United States which borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is the 28th most extensive and with a population of about 9.8 million is the 10th most populous of the 50 United States. North Carolina became one of the original 13 colonies and with the territory of South Carolina, was originally known as the Province of Carolina. The northern and southern parts of the original Province separated in The highest mountain in North Carolina is Mount Mitchell which at 6,684 feet is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. In 1776, the colony became the first to instruct its delegates to the Continental Congress to vote for independence from the British Crown. In 1861, North Carolina was the last of the Confederate states to declare secession from the Union. In 1722 Edenton served as the first state capital then New Bern in 1766 before Raleigh was chosen in The city was named after Sir Walter Raleigh who was instrumental in the colonization of North America for Queen Elizabeth I of England. An expedition which arrived on Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks in 1584 failed but paved the way for subsequent colonies. Raleigh has a population of around 432,000. Andrew Johnson, the nation s 17th President, was born in Raleigh in Charlotte is North Carolina's largest city. Its population of about 793,000 makes it the 16th largest city in the United States. Charlotte is now the second largest banking center in the United States, after New York, and is home to Bank of America. The information and biotechnology industries have been steadily on the rise in North Carolina since the creation of the Research Triangle Park in the 1950s. This globally prominent research centre is the largest and oldest continuously operating research and science park in the United States. Every year millions of tourists flock to the Appalachian Mountains in Western North Carolina. The area s attractions include the Blue Ridge Parkway, a road noted for its scenic beauty which runs for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina. The parkway, while not a "National Park," has been the most visited unit of the National Park System every year since 1946 except one. Another major attraction is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, through which the Appalachian Trail passes on its route from Maine to Georgia. The park was dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in It covers 816 square miles and was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in About 1,500 black bears live in the park and elk were reintroduced in 2001.

4 The park is the most visited national park in the United States and is a major tourist attraction in the region. Over nine million tourists visit the park each year, more than twice as many visitors as the Grand Canyon, the second most visited national park. The park has a number of historical attractions, including Cades Cove, the most popular destination in the park. Almost one million visitors each year flock to the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, which was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States. The mansion was designed in the Châteauesque style, using several Loire Valley French Renaissance architecture chateaux as models, including the Chateau de Blois where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop of Reims before departing with her army to drive the English from Orléans. At 5,846 feet, Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Outer Banks, a 200-mile long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, are another popular tourist destination. The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks are nicknamed the Graveyard of the Atlantic. More than 1,000 ships have sunk in these waters since The most famous of these shipwrecks is the Queen Anne's Revenge, flagship of the pirate Blackbeard, which went aground in Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks, known as the blue marlin capital of the world, is home to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the Wright brothers' first flight, which took place on the Outer Banks in 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the town of Kitty Hawk.
