2 About Run-Walk Events Run-Walk Events, Inc. is the organizer of the Race Across USA. It is a California Non-profit Public Benefit Corporation. Run-Walk Events purpose is to organize in lawful, fun, and world class running and walking events to raise awareness of the inactivity epidemic in young people and to support non-profit organizations whose structure and goals encourage young people and others to run or walk on a regular basis. About The 100 Mile Club The 100 Mile Club is the benefiting organization for Race Across USA. It is a national, school-based program with the goal to run or walk 100 miles during a school year. The program also teaches kids life skills, goal setting, and self-esteem while making physical activity a healthier habit for life. The 100 Mile Club has members in over 700 schools in nearly every US State as well as three other countries Canada, New Zealand and Japan! About Race Across USA According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. At the present time, 12.5 million children, ages 6-19 in the United States are obese. Many more are overweight. Starting January 16, 2015, an international team of athletes will begin a 4 1/2 month journey, running the equivalent of 117 back-toback marathons across the United States with the goal of sparking a renaissance in childhood health and fitness. Runners will run stages that are approximately 26.2 miles (a marathon) long and participate in expos with students and the local community to get the word out. The event will start in Huntington Beach, California and pass through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and finally Washington D.C. On June 2, the runners will finish the day at the White House in Washington D.C. The coast-to-coast running distance will be 3,080 miles.
3 Welcome to Mississippi, the seventh state on the Race Across USA route. The U.S. state of Mississippi is located in the Southern United States. The name of the state derives from the Mississippi River, which flows along its western boundary, whose name comes from the Ojibwe word meaning Great River. Descendant Native American tribes of the Mississippian culture in the Southeast include the Chickasaw and Choctaw. Mississippi has an estimated population of about 2,991,000. While the Missouri River, flowing from the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin Rivers to the Mississippi, is the longest continuously named river in the United States, the Mississippi, as one continuous waterway, is the longest river in North America and the fourth longest river and 10th largest river in the world. Its length of at least 3,745 miles is exceeded only by the Nile, the Amazon and the Yangtze River. The source of this waterway is at Brower's Spring, 8,800 feet above sea level in southwestern Montana, along the Continental Divide outside Yellowstone National Park. With its many tributaries, the Mississippi's watershed drains all or parts of 31 US states and two Canadian Provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains. Mississippi is bordered on the north by Tennessee, on the east by Alabama, on the south by Louisiana and a narrow coast on the Gulf of Mexico and on the west, across the Mississippi River, by Louisiana and Arkansas. The coastline includes large bays at Bay St. Louis, Biloxi and Pascagoula. It is separated from the Gulf of Mexico proper by the shallow Mississippi Sound, which is partially sheltered by Petit Bois Island, Horn Island, East and West Ship Islands, Deer Island, Round Island and Cat Island. The state of Mississippi is entirely composed of lowlands, the highest point being Woodall Mountain at just 806 feet above sea level. The northwest remainder of the state consists of the Mississippi Delta, which has rich soil, partly made up of silt which had been regularly deposited by the floodwaters of the Mississippi River. The state is heavily forested outside of the Mississippi Delta area, which was cleared for cotton cultivation in the 19th century. Today, its catfish aquaculture farms produce the majority of farm-raised catfish consumed in the United States. In 1817, the western portion of Mississippi Territory became the State of Mississippi, the 20th state of the Union. Natchez, long established as a river port, was the first state capital. In 1822 the capital was moved to a more central location at Jackson. Jackson is the largest city in Mississippi with a population of about 174,000. The city is named after Andrew Jackson, who was honored for his role in the Battle of New Orleans, the final major battle of the War of 1812, and later elected as the seventh President of the United States.
4 Jackson sits atop the extinct Jackson Volcano and is the only capital city in the United States to have this feature. The peak of the volcano is located 2,900 feet directly below the Mississippi Coliseum. The volcano was discovered in 1819 and is believed to have been extinct for at least 66 million years. Jackson Volcano is one of four volcanoes located inside cities in the United States, Diamond Head in Honolulu, Hawaii, Pilot Butte in Bend, Oregon, and Mount Tabor in Portland, Oregon being the others. Mississippi is the 32nd most extensive and the 31st most populous of the 50 United States. On other rankings, such as health and education, however, Mississippi ranks last of all states. Mississippi also has the lowest average household income, making it the poorest state in the nation but despite this, Mississippians consistently rank as one of the most generous when it comes to charitable contributions. Mississippi has produced a number of notable and famous individuals, especially in the realm of music and literature. Among the most notable are Elvis Presley, one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, often referred to as "The King of Rock and Roll"; author Eudora Alice Welty winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1973, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Order of the South who was the first living author to have her works published by the Library of America; and the multi-talented Oprah Winfrey, who was born into poverty but rose to become the greatest black philanthropist in American history and, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world and another recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award of the United States. Thanks to World Walking for use of their state description.
