2 North Dakota North Dakota, one of the most rural states in the USA, is famous for its scenery and Old West heritage. Visitors can enjoy the western experience and pick up the trail of some of America s greatest legends, like Lewis and Clark, Sakakawea, Theodore Roosevelt, Custer and Sitting Bull. These Northern Plains saw the passing of the big game hunting native cultures when fur traders and explorers opened up routes westward to the Pacific Ocean. Constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park offers year-round recreational activities, including camping, picnicking, fishing and trails for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Today, the lake is noted for its northern pike, walleye and perch. The rolling hills, aspen forests and small lakes attract nature and photography lovers to the area to capture these sights on film. The Old Oak Trail, a National Trail, is found within the park boundaries. Located 14 miles northeast of Bottineau, ND, along the U.S./Canadian border. 8

16 Garrison Douglas Creek Bay Area Park # Partial sites. Lake Sakakawea Douglas Creek 1 miles west, 8 miles south of Garrison Restrooms Rate: Public Park Garrison, ND (701) boating, fishing, swimming The campground and recreation area are free to the public and offers 17 spacious campsites. Douglas Creek offers easy access to Lake Sakakawea just outside the city of Garrison. Campground consists of primitive campsites with picnic tables, grills, vault restrooms, boat ramps, and courtesy dock. This is a hot spot for fishing for Walleye and Pike throughout the spring and summer. Campsites are near the water with several pine trees all around for protection from the wind. In the fall this offers great pheasant and deer hunting in the area with several food plots located nearby in WMAs. 16

Restrooms Lake Audubon boating, fishing, swimming From Bismarck, ND: Travel north on US-83 for approximately 65 miles, turn right onto 14th St. NW and travel 0.5 miles until you reach the campground. Rate: $12-$16 Garrison, ND (701) East Totten Trail Campground is located on the banks of Lake Audubon. This campground and day use area offers a wide variety of recreation activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing and bird watching. 17

21 Hazen Hazen Bay Rec Area Park #2008 Located in the beautiful area of Hazen Bay, North Dakota, the Hazen Bay Area and Campground is a great place to stay the next time you are planning a vacation in the state. It doesn t matter if you are just going to be passing through and staying for a day or two, or if you want to spend most of your summer there, you are going to have a great time! The campground, which is located just 15 miles north of Hazen on the shores of Lake Sakakawea, is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day of each year. 70 sites. Partial sites. 30/50 AMP service. It is situated on the west bank of the Missouri River and the adjacent hills. The river is bordered by some of the most extensive floodplain forests left in the state. 22

Please note exit 27 is a westbound exit only nd Ave Medora, ND (701) For people visiting the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Cottonwood Campground is a great place to stay. Located five miles from the entrance to the South Unit of the park, the campground is open year-round. 33

Travel west for 11 blocks, or until you reach the intersection of 13th Street and 1st Avenue (this will be the south west corner of the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd). Turn right onto 13th Street and travel 4 blocks north. The park will be on your right. 37

The Missouri River flows next to the site. From Bismarck, North Dakota, take Highway 83 north and turn left on Highway 200 west toward Riverdale. After crossing the Spillway Bridge, take a left on Tow Road. At bottom intersection of the dam, turn left and go 1/4 mile east, then turn right onto the campground access road. 40

From Bismarck, ND: travel north on US-83/ND-1804 approximately 55 miles, turn left onto ND-200/6th St. NW and travel approximately 7.5 miles, turn right onto 37th Ave NW and travel 1 mile then turn right onto 7th St. NW travel 1 mile and turn left onto 36th Ave NW, travel approximately 2 miles and arrive at campground. 42

Restrooms Rate: $7-$14 Watford City, ND (701) Little Missouri River fishing, boating, swimming Take an hour to two out of your time to drive the Scenic Drives in either the North and/or South Units of TRNP - a memorable journey. The North Unit entrance is along U.S. Highway 85, approximately 14 miles south of Watford City, ND and 50 miles north of Belfield, ND. The distance by road from Medora to the North Unit is approximately 70 miles. I-94 travelers can access U.S. Highway 85 at Exit 42 in Belfield, ND. 43
