Sailing has been a way of life from the earliest habitation of Anguilla. It was also one of the first expressions of competition among the Locals. Anguilla honours this through its national sport: Boat Racing. These handmade boats fill the crew and onlookers with immense exhilaration as they whisk across the waters. This has come to be one of our favourite adventures on the island. We bring this excitement to Maundays Bay with our Belmond Cap Juluca Cup. 3 ISLAND TRADITIONS On Anguilla, the festive season is centred around great food and family fun. A myriad of memories share these two things in common. All Anguillians look forward to the local drinks such as Mauby, Ginger Beer and Guava Berry. The freshly baked potato pudding, coconut tart and rum cake with homemade ice cream are a must have during this time of the year. Across the island the inviting scents from the rock ovens linger as long as the warming smiles and laughs of children running along the beach, making toys and immersing themselves in the frolic of the day. In the midst of all the activity family and friends were never too busy to decorate their freshly picked five finger tree and place under it their handmade presents wrapped in catalogue paper. Everywhere you go there would be singing and dancing. The Moko Jumbies, drummers and serenaders would echo the sounds of peace on earth and good will to all men as families gather beachside and under the trees to enjoy the most delightful and tasty meals. After long days on the sea, the men would settle in for a few overs of cricket, a hand or two of dominoes and storytelling with the children. When they were finished spicing and flavouring the day, the women would be pampered and refreshed with salt baths and island herb scrubs. Every evening the entire family would get together and though their activities for the day would differ they would all glow with the joy of the season. Today, festive season on Anguilla still leaves you pleasured by paradise on the days kissed by perfection.
