1 CURRICULUM VITAE The Gruppo Storico Romano is a non-political, non-profit, cultural association founded in 1994 by the passion that of president Sergio Iacomoni, commonly known as "Nerone". He, with a group of friends, all with the same interest, has decided to begin this adventure and as date of creation of Group, they chose a symbolic day: 21 of April, the day of the foundation of the eternal city ROME. After a quarter of century of activity the growth of the Association has been remarkable. Born, almost for fun, from a previous association called "We have fun", today the Gruppo Storico Romano is unanimously known as one of the leading groups in Italy and in the world relatively to historical re-enactment of Ancient Rome. The aims of the association are to propose, organize and sustain, in a credible way, events, demonstrations, rites, characters, and crafts relatives to the world of ancient Rome. The re-enactment of Gruppo Storico Romano foresees for it s credibility, a preliminary phase of study, research, analysis, practical experimentation. Basic methodology for the study phase, is the correct reading and interpretation of: A) Primary sources of all kinds (archival, environmental, iconographic, etc.); B) Indirect sources (general historical texts, books, researches, etc.). The principal activity of Gruppo Storico Romano is directed to the "Reconstructive Event", which circumscribes as much as possible the time and the theme of its action for the maximum fidelity relatively to creation and use of clothes, equipment, music, dishes, accessories, settings all as much as possible faithful the original finds. In the world of the Reconstructive Event, we identify: Living History The rediscovery of the past in every expression (civil, technological, scientific, artistic or military); Re-enactment The reconstruction of a particular historical event. It can be military, civil, religious and it s reconstructed and represented in the same place and with the same way it happened. In this context, the Gruppo Storico Romano has started a way that goes in this direction, for its power to communicate to all age groups too: the "Theatricalized aedicules" in archaeological areas. The "Theatricalized aedicules" represents a novelty in the panorama of Historical Re-enactment. They allow, to talk about the story of the archaeological area through the characters who lived there or through the famous people that have influenced the territory and historical period.
2 To make the archaeological site alive, with the re-enactors, is perceived by visitors as a unique experience: learning history by living it. The re-enactment, in this way, allows you to appreciate the content too of an archaeological site otherwise known, only as site. The Gruppo Storico Romano represents a point of aggregation too for all those enthusiasts people, who have their passion into the world of ancient Rome. The GSR publishes a bi-monthly magazine of culture and historical re-enactment entitled "ACTA BIMESTRIA - POPVLI ROMANI", distributed free and sponsored by Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali e Centro Storico di Roma Capitale and by the Libraries of Roma Capitale, for which it received several letters of appreciation by high personalities of the State and of culture. For GSR, the cultural disclosure activity is very important and active into the schools: Primaries and Secondaries. In past years this activity, was made too in various high school in several cities in the USA (Tampa, San Antonio, San Francisco, Saratoga, etc.). The Association won several awards, including from 2009 to 2016 various medals of the Presidenza della Repubblica Italiana, and various patronage, including that of the Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri della Repubblica Italiana, that of Regione Lazio, that of Provincia di Roma and that of Roma Capitale ed altri enti pubblici. The membership activity of the Gruppo Storico Romano takes place mainly at its headquarter, located in Via Appia Antica 18, in a suggestive structure where was built a small castrum and an arena where are represented events of particular cultural interest. There is also an interactive museum with free admission, inaugurated in 2005, sponsored by the dall Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali e Centro Storico di Roma Capitale and awarded with a silver medal by the Presidente della Repubblica Italiana. In this little museum, about 300 reconstructed objects are exhibited, both civilians and military, concerning ancient Rome. It s visited annually by about 10,000 students, Italians and foreigners, plus an unknown number of tourists and enthusiasts citizens. There are also educational and play areas and spaces reserved for members activities. Inside the association there are several sectors of re-enactment: Legionaries of XI Legio Claudia (first century) Auxilia Praetorians of empire cohort Gladiators Vestals Senators Dancers Social Anthropology
3 All the sectors, has an intense activity of experimental archeology, based on the reconstruction, civil and military. Among the civilians it s very important, for example, the study of the female world at the time of ancient Rome, from tricks to perfumes, from hairstyles to clothing. In the military context, it s important the reconstructions of the castrum legionis. The last, made at Ienne (Rome), in which the legionaries, have reconstructed every aspect of the life in a camp for a Roman legion: from food to military training. GSR, organize and represent variou rites and ceremonies, famous and very felt in ancient Rome. We can mention: Captio Virginis (entrance among the priestesses of a new vestal), Testamentum Augusti (delivery and custody of the testament of Augustus at the Atrium Vestae), the Conspiracy of Catiline, Confarreatio (the religious marriage), Septimontium (religious rite with a procession on the 7 hills of Rome), Palilia (ceremony celebrating the foundation of Rome), Ignis Vestae renovatio (the annual ignition of the sacred fire of Vesta), Honesta Missio (ceremony about praetorian's leave), the cause Interamnae - Reate on the Marmore Falls. Inside GSR, there is the SCHOOL GLADIATORI ROMA too. It s a real school, which people can sign up, to learn the gladiator s fighting techniques. This school, provides regular courses and the gladiator have to study, to learn, to pass step by step in a real hierarchy. The importance of the Scuola Gladiatori Roma every year invites tourists and visitors, both italian and foreign, to take part in our "Gladiator for a day" courses. Two intense hours during which the participants, after an initial introduction to the history of ancient Rome, through a visit to the historical-educational Museum of the Roman legionary, are projected into the arena where, after learning the basic techniques of fighting, both attack and defense, try the weapons and armor from us reproduced. The members of the Gruppo Storico Romano, which usually meet on te evening of each Thursday at the association's headquarters, come from different cultural and professional areas, including workers, traders, artisans, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, managers, students, public and military employees. They have only one intent: cooperate for the achievement of the social purpose: Represent all over the world Ancient Rome. A feature of the members of GSR, is that, becoming part of the Group, every member, assumes its own Roman Nomen with which he will be known by other members. The association is open to everyone, men and women of any age. At the new member, are illustrated and explained all various sectors to better choose the most suitable for him/her. At the time of registration only the membership fee is required. The Group makes available the materials and clothing to be able to participate in its activities. Some sectors then provide an additional fee for the purchase of special equipment.
