2 Valcamonica Rock Art and Archaeology Fieldwork & fieldschool Daniele and Greine tracing and cleaning the engravings on the rock 1 of Dos Sulif, Paspardo The Footsteps of Man Archaeological Cooperative Society is based in Valcamonica, an alpine valley comprised between the province of Bergamo and Brescia in Northern Italy, where rock art constitutes an archaeological, artistic, ethnographic and historical patrimony of inestimable value, not only for its antiquity but, above all, for the thematic and iconographic wealth. As an active rock art centre, member of IFRAO (International Federation of Rock Art Organizations), the Footsteps of Man, in collaboration with the Catholic University of Brescia, organizes its annual archaeology fieldwork at Paspardo, one of the major area with engravings concentration, giving the opportunity to those interested (archaeologists and scholars, students and enthusiasts) to help the research and to learn how to study the rock art of Valcamonica. The project participants will: survey, excavate, clean, photograph, draw and catalogue the rocks engraved in three main sites at Paspardo, Valcamonica: Vite-Deria, Baite Fles and Dos Sulif.

3 The project consists of different phases, some are executed on the sites, some in the laboratory: researches on the sites: surveys for finding new engraved rocks; analysis of the damages of the rock surfaces and conservation problems; contact tracing: drawing of the engravings with permanent pens on plastic sheets; photographs; in laboratory: reduction of the drawings in scale size; catalogue of the engravings. Participants usually come from different countries of the world, official languages are English and Italian. In Paspardo accommodation is provided in house with rooms, dormitories, showers and kitchen. The conferences (usually in English or with English translation) will be illustrated with the help of slides or Power point. The themes of lectures also will be diversified. 4 USEFUL INFORMATION (Cost, things to bring, how to get there) HOW TO GET THERE (PASPARDO - Valcamonica) Meeting days: 14 July or 21 July, or 28 July Meeting point: the bus-stop of Ceto- Cerveno (Valcamonica, Brescia province), from pm to 7.30 pm (14, 21 or 28 July 2008). If you come in other dates: let us know in advance when you are coming (in the application form) so we can meet you in front of the station. In any case you can call us at the number or at the mobile tel leaving if it is the case a message on the answering machine. Hour: from 4.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Valcamonica Rock Art Fieldwork & Fieldschool (at p.m.) that goes to Valcamonica. You get off at Ceto- Cerveno station. At the meeting point you will be contacted by the members of the Footsteps of Man and by private cars you will reach Paspardo. How to go back to Milan or Brescia from Paspardo: in the same way using the bus or the train. Ask for details to the secretary as soon as you know exactly when you are leaving. BUS: from the Sesto Marelli subway Station (Bus Terminal) in Milan (that you can easily reach with the red line of the underground, get off at the Sesto Marelli station) there is a bus (at 2.00 p.m.) that takes you to the Valcamonica where you get off at Ceto-Cerveno station. TRAIN: from the National Railway Station (FS) in Brescia there is a train THINGS TO BRING Work clothes, work gloves, gym and trekking shoes, sleeping bag, bath towels, solar cream and sun glasses. Please to take out insurance against illness and injury, because we decline any responsibility. If you can, please have an anti-tetanus vaccination. COST Accommodation, food, publications and working material will be provided at a cost of 370,00 for one week (two weeks 740,00; three weeks 1110,00; only Euros are accepted).
