1 THE HONORS COLLEGE Study Abroad ITALY ROME, FLORENCE, SIENA May 15-25, 2018 Faculty Director and Staff Leader: Dr. Dustin Gish, Prof. Andy Little This 10-day excursion is an Honors Study Abroad cultural trip to ITALY, including: on-site study and discussion of major historical, archaeological, and cultural sites; visits to major museums, churches, and galleries; and in-depth urban explorations in ROME, FLORENCE, and SIENA. Students will learn about and experience first-hand the culture, cuisine, history, art, and architecture of Italian culture from antiquity through modernity. During this trip, students will see some of the most treasured and world-renowned places and artworks associated with the intellectual, cultural, and artistic heritage of European and Mediterranean civilizations. Together we will experience the Wonders of ITALY The Eternal City of ROME with its picturesque piazzas, monumental ancient ruins, medieval districts, Renaissance & Baroque palazzi, and modern energy as a European capital UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Historic Centre of Rome & Vatican City including the Colosseum, Forum, Vatican Museums, & the Sistine Chapel The Splendor of TUSCANY with its stunning natural beauty, celebrated landscapes, legendary medieval hill-towns (Siena & San Gimignano), and the ideal Renaissance city-state of Florence, whose art, architecture, and culture make it one of the most famous cities in the world UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Tuscany, Florence, San Gimignano, Siena Brief selections of readings from major Italian authors and texts will supplement our travel, creating a rich co-curricular learning experience for UH Honors students, especially those who have finished our interdisciplinary course, The Human Situation. Participation on this trip is limited to 25 students. Places are reserved to those who register first and pay the deposit, and complete payment in full. Program Cost $2800 $300 deposit (immediately), plus option for $500 payment installments All UH Honors students are eligible to receive $500 travel scholarships for this program! All UH Honors students with National Merit, Tier One, or Terry Foundation Scholarships can request up to $2000 in scholarship funds for this study abroad program!

Participation on this trip is limited to 25 students. 2nd Payment $500 Due by December 31. Four (4) additional monthly payments of $500 each are due: Jan. 5, Feb. 5, Mar. 5, and Apr. 5. All rooms have private bathroom equipped with a bathtub, free toiletries, hairdryer. A flat- screen TV is featured. There is a 24- hour front desk at the property. Hotel Ripa Roma is near Trastevere, a great choice for travelers interested in food, city walks, and culture. SIENA NH Excelsior Siena 4 Star Piazza la Lizza, Siena SI, Italy Tel: hotels.it/hotel/nh- siena NH Excelsior is located just beyond the medieval city walls, a 10- minute walk from Piazza del Campo, which is the historic center of Siena. The hotel has a gym and a 24- hour front desk. FLORENCE WOW Florence Hostel Via Venezia, 18/b Firenze FI, Italy Tel: Star Wow Florence Hostel is located near the area of San Marco Santissima Annunziata is a great choice for travelers interested in monuments, architecture, and city walks. SORRENTO Art Hotel Gran Paradiso 4 Star Via Catigliano Sorrento NA, Italy Tel: Gran Paradiso offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, is a few minutes from the beach, features an outdoor pool, fitness center, and provides a free shuttle service to the center of Sorrento. Rooms are air- conditioned, include a balcony, some with views of the sea. Meals are served on the terrace, which lets guests take in panoramic sea views. Staff is available 24 hours a day.
