Sincerely Gaye Stewart-Loudis Membership Director cruise line news Royal Caribbean launches French cruise brand Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced the launch of a new cruise brand dedicated to the French source market. CDF Croisieres de France will begin operations in May with Bleu de France, currently sailing as Pullmantur s Holiday Dream. A $30m over haul is planned to transform the ship for the French market. Royal Caribbean said the work will encompass public spaces, accommodations and dining options. The yard has not been finalized. The 376-cabin vessel was built in 1982 and originally sailed as Hapag-Lloyd s Europa. Bleu de France will initially sail a Mediterranean itinerary from Marseille, redeploying to La Romana in the Dominican Republic for the Caribbean season. Carnival Corporation & plc and Orizonia Finalize Agreement for New Spanish Cruise Operation Carnival Corporation & plc and Orizonia Corporación, Spain s largest travel company, announced that they have finalized the agreements for a previously announced multi-ship cruise brand serving the Spanish market. The transaction was expected to close on September 14,, with Carnival owning 75 percent of the joint venture and Orizonia owning 25 percent. The new joint venture company will be consolidated into Carnival Corporation & plc s financial results starting in the fourth quarter and is expected to be accretive to results in To be called Iberocruceros, the new joint venture combines the two vessels of Orizonia s existing cruise operations with a ship from the Carnival group. Carnival and TUI to Withdraw German Anti-trust Filing For Joint Venture Carnival Corporation & plc announced that it has agreed with Germany s TUI AG to withdraw its antitrust filings with the German Federal Cartel Agency, Bundeskartellamt, and the Austrian Federal Cartel Agency, Bundeswettbewerbsbehörde. Carnival and TUI had agreed to form a joint venture to develop a new cruise brand for Germany. Carnival cited an extremely difficult regulatory environment in Germany, which makes it impossible to close the proposed joint venture this fiscal year. Failure to do so would create adverse tax consequences for the company that would impact the economics of the transaction. As a result of the regulatory and tax s Carnival and TUI have agreed not to proceed with the proposed joint venture but will continue to explore other opportunities. Meyer Cuts Steel for Celebrity Equinox Meyer Werft launched production of the first steel plate for Celebrity Cruises second Solstice-class ship. The 122,000gt Celebrity Equinox is scheduled to enter service in In a ceremony at the Papenburg shipyard, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. chairman and CEO Richard Fain joined Meyer Werft executives Jarmo Laakso and Lambert Kruse in pushing the button to start the steelcutting plasma torch. Laakso is the builder's project manager for Celebrity and Kruse is md. 1

2 Cunard s Queen Victoria To Receive Royal Naming Cunard Line has announced that Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, will attend a ceremony in Southampton on December 10,, to mark the introduction of Cunard s new 90,000-ton liner Queen Victoria. At this ceremony, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall will perform the naming of the ship. This naming will be a milestone in both Cunard and British maritime history, and will be a major event of worldwide interest, with over 2,000 VIP guests from around the globe in attendance at the prestigious ceremony. MSC Fantasia: A New Concept in Cruise Ships Work is proceeding at a great pace on the construction of MSC Fantasia at Aker Yards France which is set for a November 2008 Delivery date. MSC Fantasia, the biggest ship to be commissioned by a European ship owner, will set off a new concept of cruise ship and an innovative way of cruising. MSC Fantasia will feature the most advanced building technology, the most precious materials and a new space concept to satisfy every client s needs. MSC Fantasia will be the first MSC ship to introduce an exclusive VIP area, the MSC Yacht Club, with sixstar service, 68 luxury suites from 193 to 699 square feet, with a true English butler service to assist the passenger in every possible way, starting from checkin to the 24-hour stateroom service, excursion reservations, transfers, wine choices, champagne and cigars. NCL Named Official Cruise Line of The PGA TOUR NCL Corporation and the PGA TOUR announced an official marketing partnership naming Norwegian Cruise Line as the Official Cruise Line of the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour. The three-year agreement also provides NCL the right to use the TOUR marks in advertising, as well as promotional and tournament hospitality opportunities built around both Tours. The PGA TOUR and NCL will work together on promoting the line s current Golf Hawaii and Golf Bermuda programs, as well as on expanding the golf experience, exploring executions that include tournaments and TOUR members. Norwegian Coastal Voyage is Now Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal V oyage will now be known in the U.S. as Hurtigruten, the name the Norwaybased company uses worldwide for its voyages and tours along the Norwegian coast and expedition voyages to the Arctic, Antarctica and Greenland. The name change is in line with the company s strategy to develop a single brand worldwide including in the U.S. market, according to Hans Rood, president of Hurtigruten in North America. Regent Seven Seas Cruises Makes Luxury History with Two World Cruises in 2009 Regent Seven Seas Cruises will offer two World Cruise itineraries in 2009, becoming the first luxury cruise operator ever to offer two global winter cruises in the same year. Regent s World Cruise guests will travel in sybaritic style aboard the 700-guest, all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Voyager and the 700-guest, all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Mariner. Seven Seas Voyager will embark on a 116-night January journey to the South Pacific, Orient, Arabia, the Mediterranean and Bermuda, while Seven Seas Mariner departs two weeks later for a 121-night sojourn to South America, French Polynesia, Australia, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Russia and Alaska. 2

3 SeaDream Sets Rare Sailing from Miami A SeaDream Yacht Club vessel will make a rare visit to Miami this November as SeaDream II embarks on an 11-night sailing to St. Thomas. SeaDream s absence from Miami is not because we don t love it here, according to Larry Pimentel, president and CEO of the Miami-based line. When cruising in the Caribbean, It s more practical for us to sail in and out of San Juan, or St. Thomas, for example, than it is for us to base our yachts in Florida, he explained. SeaDream customers are happy with that Pimentel added, even though some live in Miami while many spend pre- or post-cruise holidays at area hotels and resorts. PROMOTIONS/APPOINTMENTS: Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Names Goldstein, Hanrahan President/CEO Of Cruise Brands Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. promoted two of its top executives to president and CEO of their respective brands. Nineteenyear Royal Caribbean executive, Adam Goldstein, president of Royal Caribbean International since 2005, becomes president and CEO of that brand, and eight-year Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises veteran, Dan Hanrahan, president of Celebrity Cruises since 2005, adds CEO to his title as well. Both officers will continue to report to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fain, and both changes are effective immediately. Cunard Line Appoints Queen Victoria's Senior Officers Cunard Line has announced the appointment of three senior officers who will serve aboard its newest ocean liner, Queen Victoria, when she enters service in December. The veteran trio joins Captain Paul Wright, whose appointment as Master of Queen Victoria was announced in October Together, they boast more than 85 years of seagoing experience, gleaned most recently aboard Queen Victoria's majestic sister ships, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2. Anders Aasen Promoted to Associate VP, Marine Technical Services for Royal Caribbean International Anders Aasen was promoted to Associate Vice President, Marine Technical Services for Royal Caribbean International. Anders is responsible for all technical support to the Royal fleet. He has been instrumental in achieving fuel efficiencies for the brand. Anders knows the history, ships and development of Royal Caribbean as he started his career as Electrical Engineer on the Sun Viking 16 years ago. He has since worked as 1st Electrical Engineer and Chief Electrical Engineer on Nordic Prince, Monarch, Sovereign, Majesty, Splendour and Enchantment. Kokosoulis Promoted to Associate VP, Celebrity Technical Operations Angelos Kokosoulis was promoted to Associate Vice President, Celebrity Technical Operations. He joined the company three years ago as Director of Technical Operations. His contributions include the professional development of members on his team, the enhancement of the various repair and shipyard procedures for Celebrity Technical Operations, as well as setting a strong focus on efficiencies and financial controls for his team and the vessels. He also worked on the fleetwide par level restructure implementation. HAL Appoints Director of Compliance Holland America Line named James Garrett director of compliance programs, overseeing audit, safety, investigation and compliance. He also coordinates emergency response and exercise programs, and develops operational safety policies. Garrett is a retired captain from the U.S. Coast Guard. His last position was Commander of Activities Far East/Liaison to U.S. Forces Japan/Officer in Charge of Marine Inspection Asia. He also held leadership positions in the areas of quality assurance, traveling inspection, marine safety and commercial vessel safety. At HAL, Garrett reports to Rene Roussel, vp nautical and compliance. 3

4 executive partner news 3M Observes 50th Anniversary of Scotchlok Connectors This year, 3M and the telecom industry are celebrating the 50th anniversary of 3M s invention of the Scotchlok connector, a small but powerful tool that has changed very little in that 50 years but helped make a world of difference in the industry. Communications craftspeople and electricians use Scotchlok connectors as they install broadband, voice, data and video wiring in homes and businesses. A commemorative promotional sweepstakes with instant prizes and a Harley-Davidson Sportster grand prize are part of the anniversary celebration this fall. ABS Issues Guidance for Protective Coatings ABS is assisting shipbuilders, ship owners and operators preparing for the new IMO mandated Performance Standard for Protective Coatings by issuing a completely revised and expanded edition of its Guidance Notes on Inspection, Maintenance and Application of Marine Coatings. The IMO standards take effect on 1 July 2008 and will apply to the dedicated seawater ballast tanks on all ships of not less than 500 gross tons for which the building contract is placed on or after 1 July 2008; or, in the absence of a building contract, the keels of which are laid on or after 1 January The standards also apply to the double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers of 150m in length and upwards. Clean & Green Port of Houston Program Launched The Port of Houston Authority, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and corporate partner Shell Oil Company launched the Clean & Green Port of Houston program to restore Buffalo Bayou to a cleaner and more beautiful waterway. The year-round program is an environmental initiative that will use community service workers through the Harris County Supervision & Corrections Department to clean up litter and debris. Five days a week, a land-based crew will collect litter and debris from the banks of the waterway, while a water-based crew will work from a skimmer boat to clean storm drains, banks and other natural collection areas. The program aims to collect more than 10 cubic yards of debris a day over the next year -- enough to fill 83 garbage trucks. Department of Homeland Security Selects Port of San Diego for Project to Detect Weapons The Department of Homeland Security announced that the Port of San Diego and Washington s Puget Sound would be part of a pilot project to detect radiological and nuclear weapons. The program is scheduled to get under way in San Diego in It already is under way in Puget Sound, which includes the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. The focus will be on small commercial craft and recreational vessels. The Department of Homeland Security said small boats have been used by criminals to smuggle drugs and migrants and while there is no imminent threat, they could also be used to transport nuclear or radiological weapons into the country. Lloyd s Register Opens State-of-the-Art Shanghai Training Centre to Support China s Marine Industry Lloyd s Register Asia has opened Shanghai s most comprehensive foreignfunded maritime training centre, putting in place the cornerstone of a 3-millionyuan commitment this year to the development of educational courses and related infrastructure in China. The new Lloyd s Register Maritime Institute (Shanghai) was created to provide a centre of learning from where working surveyors and auditors can share their technical knowledge with China s shipbuilders, owners and maritime students through specifically tailored seminars, lectures and training courses. 4

5 SeaMobile Adopts Blue Coat Appliances to Speed Internet Access on Cruise Ships Blue Coat Systems, Inc., a leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, announced that SeaMobile has selected Blue Coat(R) ProxySG(R) appliances to accelerate traffic and Web access for passengers using Internet cafes on cruise ships. Blue Coat s ProxySG appliances accelerate applications, and Web content and optimize bandwidth usage over satellite links. This results in increased performance, allowing for more users and new services that SeaMobile is offering on cruise ships. It also improves the passenger s experience when using the onboard Internet cafes. Seattle Port Backs Strict Standards for Ocean-Going Vessels The Seattle Port Commission passed a resolution endorsing the U.S. government s proposal for more stringent international rules for ocean-going vessels. We are taking action locally to make sure our seaport operations are the cleanest possible, while supporting more stringent national and international regulatory standards, said Commission President John Creighton. He noted conversions to cleaner fuels, engines and operating practices by the Port and its main customers, environmental restoration of polluted sites, and other initiatives. But he said some environmental improvements have to happen on an international basis, and that s why the commission endorsed U.S. proposals to the International Maritime Organization. Unisource Joins The Print Council Unisource Worldwide, Inc., has joined The Print Council, a Washington, D.C.-based national business development organization dedicated to promoting greater use of printing and print media. 6 industry news Congressional Hearing on Cruise Ship Crime On Sept. 19, the cruise industry testified on cruise ship crimes during a hearing held by Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD), Chairman of the Coast Guard and Maritime Subcommittee, as part of the industry s fourth hearing on this topic. The industry gave a progress report on the work conducted on cruise ship security enhancements and its work with passenger advocacy groups. Low Sulfur Fuel Regulations in California California placed regulations in effect last January that required diesel electric/ and auxiliary engines to burn low sulfur fuel when within 24 miles of the California coast. The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) challenged these regulations in federal court. CLIA supported the challenge as an amicus. The challenge was successful and the regulations are no longer in effect. The PMSA has recommended that operators voluntarily utilize low sulfur fuel when within three miles of the coast. Cruise Industry Economic Study Released CLIA released its annual economic study on Aug. 28, showing the cruise industry has a positive impact on the economies of all 50 states. Cruise lines, their employees and passengers make substantial contributions that benefit the U.S. economy. In 2006, the findings concluded: Total economic benefit of the cruise industry in the U.S. = $35.7 billion Direct spending of the cruise lines and passengers on U.S. goods and services = $17.6 billion The cruise industry generated 348,000 full- and part-time jobs Cruise industry activity generated $14.7 billion in wages for U.S. employees On average, a 2,000-passenger ship with 950 crew members generates approximately $322,700 in onshore spending in a U.S. home port city.
